ISBN 978-0-7748-7251-5 paper ¥7,889.- (税込) US$ 37.95

Diplomacy works better than bluster, as John Hart knew well. Hart, an Irish immigrant with a talent for compromise and a famously winning smile, was at the heart of BC politics for much of the first half of the twentieth century. Drawing on government records, politicians' papers, and newspaper reports, John Hart illuminates his achievements as finance minister and premier.A businessman and Liberal, Hart managed British Columbia's finances during both world wars and the Depression. As premier during much of the Second World War, he led a coalition with the Conservatives that provided businesslike governance and established the persistent BC political theme of free enterprise versus socialism. This lively account helps fill a significant gap in the political and economic history of British Columbia.

Lubben, Stephen J., To Protect Their Interests: The Invention and Exploitation of Corporate Bankruptcy. 384 pp. 2026:1 (Columbia U. Pr., US) <749-328>
ISBN 978-0-231-21310-3 hard ¥27,027.- (税込) US$ 130.00
ISBN 978-0-231-21311-0 paper ¥6,652.- (税込) US$ 32.00

Chapter 11 corporate bankruptcy proceedings are commonly thought of as a tool to protect the broader economy from the failure of large firms, even though the biggest players reap the greatest rewards. In the conventional telling, modern corporate reorganization began in the 1890s, with J. P. Morgan leading a noble effort to protect bondholders from the depredations of corporate insiders. What does this story leave out, and how do the true origins of bankruptcy law shed light on its present-day uses and abuses? To Protect Their Interests is a groundbreaking historical account of how corporate bankruptcy became what it is today-a forum for battles between well-heeled insiders. Stephen J. Lubben strips away the myths surrounding the history of corporate restructuring, showing that it emerged a decade before Morgan, when the robber baron Jay Gould strove to keep control of his railroad by working out a compromise with a handful of wealthy investors. The 1885 restructuring of Texas and Pacific Railway set the pattern for future corporate reorganizations: insider dealing, elite manipulation of the legal system, and judicial deference. Lubben traces the evolution of the bankruptcy system through a series of major cases involving companies such as W. T. Grant and Toys "R" Us, demonstrating that it has always been a way for the powerful to maintain power. Revealing the sordid origins of bankruptcy law, this book also considers the limited prospects for reform.

Suffia, Ilaria, CSR and its Internal Narrative: A History of the Pirelli Company Magazine (1950-2019). (Palgrave Debates in Business History) 130 pp. 2025:5 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <749-329>
ISBN 978-3-031-87444-4 hard ¥9,588.- (税込) EUR 39.99

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was coined as a term in the 1950s, although modern notions of corporate responsibility can be traced to the second half of the 19th century. This book uses internal company communications as a dataset to analyse the development of CSR over the past 70 years, making a detailed study of the Pirelli company in-house magazine, 'Fatte e Notizie' ('Facts and News'), which published between 1950 and 2019. Pirelli, today one of the world's leading tyre manufacturers, is considered the first Italian multinational and has had an international and innovative perspective on social responsibility from its founding. The company magazine represents a record of corporate culture and values over a period of enormous societal change. This book identifies three distinct eras of corporate responsibility, the paternalism of the 1950s and 60s, a period of confrontation from the 70s-90s and finally the shared responsibility perspective of our current era. It applies this structure to key themes of CSR, including women and gender, employee welfare, health and training. The book will be of great interest to students and scholars of business history, CSR and business ethics more broadly.

In the 19th century the United States had no formal central bank or lender of last resort, but it did have J. P. Morgan. His unique knowledge of financial markets gave him almost omniscient knowledge for crafting solutions to financial crises. Before the Fed examines Morgan's unusual role in resolving the National Banking Era crises in the U. S., exploring the rocky relationships and ultimatums he used to settle financial panics. It traces how he learned crisis management from his father, passing them along to his son in turn. Citing his own ledgers, telegrams and testimony, Jon Moen and Mary Tone Rodgers details how Morgan applied and modified routine business practices to solve non-routine crises, managing risk and reward in emergency lending. Analyzing forty last resort loans made over his fifty-year career, the authors challenge the invincibility folklore surrounding Morgan, uncovering how he stabilized American markets when others could not.

Richter, Konstantin, Dreihundert Maenner: Aufstieg und Fall einer grossen Industrienation. 550 S. 2025:10 (Suhrkamp, GW) <747-454>
ISBN 978-3-518-43252-5 hard ¥7,194.- (税込) EUR 30.00

Nachum, Lilac / Yaprak, Attila (eds.), The Historical Evolution of International Business: Growth Trajectory of an Academic Field of Study. 374 pp. 2025:6 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <747-457>
ISBN 978-3-031-86132-1 hard ¥43,160.- (税込) EUR 179.99 *

This book represents the first and most comprehensive account of the history of International Business (IB) as a field of study. The chronicling of the evolution of IB thought, teaching, and institutions in a unified framework serves to observe the interdependencies among these components and demonstrates the ways by which they have jointly shaped IB as a field of study. The book is based on vast volumes of original material whose discussion and interpretation by leading IB scholars creates a dialogue between historical perspectives and contemporary developments and shows the critical role of history in understanding the current state and discourse of IB as a field of study. The book situates the history of IB within the broader context of business, political, and societal developments, and examines the interaction between external and internal forces as they have shaped the field's growth trajectory, both on its own and in comparison with those of other fields of study.

Meil, Doug, The Rise and Fall of Explorys and IBM Watson Health: Healthcare Innovation and the Moonshot That Misfired. 272 pp. 2025:8 (Productivity Pr., US) <746-382>
ISBN 978-1-032-79360-3 hard ¥41,470.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
ISBN 978-1-032-79359-7 paper ¥10,292.- (税込) GB£ 35.99

In 2015, Explorys was a healthcare intelligence cloud company that had built one of the largest clinical data sets in the world, representing more than 50 million lives. It provided secure cloud-based solutions for clinical integration, at-risk population management, cost of care measurement, and pay-for-performance. The acquisition of Explorys complemented and strengthened the IBM Watson Health Cloud platform and empowered IBM's vast ecosystem of clients, partners, and medical researchers to surface new connections among diverse and previously siloed healthcare data sets. The combination of both Explorys and IBM Watson Health was expected to spur the creation of a new generation of data-driven application and solutions designed to advance health and wellness. So, what when wrong? IBM Watson Health is a massive case study in healthcare innovation gone awry. IBM was one of the oldest and largest technology companies in the world and was riding a tailwind with IBM Watson's Artificial Intelligence success on Jeopardy in 2011. The Watson Health division was seeded with multiple healthcare acquisitions, one of them being Explorys. Explorys had a portfolio of hosted population analytic solutions and the largest clinical dataset in the United States at the time at approximately 50 million de-duplicated patients. The newly created division was loaded with potential and seemed destined for success. Yet Watson Health went from being founded in April 2015 to imploding in May 2018 in a little over 3 years and took Explorys down with it. IBM Watson Health's ascent and descent were covered by both healthcare and mainstream media. Watson Health was self-described as IBM's "Moonshot" in healthcare. This venture failed, and it cost IBM billions of dollars. These were expensive lessons on managing innovation in healthcare, but also on managing innovation in general. This book chronicles the story of Explorys and IBM Watson Health and what led to its downfall in just 3 short years. Written by one of Explorys' founding engineers, the book relates the rise and fall of both Explorys and IBM Watson and provides a message for future tech entrepreneurs and IT managers alike.

Oliver, Emmet, Irish Nation Building: Government, Business and Power, 1922-1958. (Palgrave Studies in Economic History) 234 pp. 2025:4 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <745-264>
ISBN 978-3-031-84930-5 hard ¥31,170.- (税込) EUR 129.99 *

This book examines the early decades of economic nation building in Ireland. It draws on a large amount of previously unstudied archival material to construct a novel contribution to Irish business and economic history that focuses on government relations, business power and wider dynamics of power in a decolonising context. The book adopts a different approach to the early decades of Irish independence, decentering the typical focus on party political developments, Church-state relations and Anglo-Irish relations. Instead, the book explores the role of Irish businesses and services and their engagement with the governing elites of the time. More than just offering a general survey of Irish businesses in the early years of independence, the chapters of this book illuminate and analyse the 'commanding heights' of the economy, the Marxist term for the core distribution channels of capital and labour. In particular, the book focuses on four key strategic sectors - banking, insurance, shipping and rail - to analyse the tensions between the new Irish nationalist political elite and embedded business interests from the pre-independence era, how these led to the transformation of the Irish economic model by the late 1950s, and its gradual integration into a newly globalising world economy. This book will be essential reading for students and researchers of economic and business history, and Irish history and independence broadly.

Wilhelm, Lola, Formulating Development: How Nestle Shaped the Aid Industry. (Humanitarianism: Key Debates and New Approaches) 288 pp. 2025:7 (Manchester U. Pr., UK) <744-275>
ISBN 978-1-5261-8099-5 hard ¥25,740.- (税込) GB£ 90.00

In the 1970s, Nestle became a lightning rod for criticism against the food industry's negative impacts on humans and their environment, especially in the Global South. But what has so far eluded historical scrutiny is that the picture was more nuanced. This book tells the exclusive story of how the Swiss food giant, and more broadly corporate capitalism, have shaped the aid industry since the late nineteenth century. It follows Nestle's bid for a share of the humanitarian market brokered by the Red Cross in wartime Europe, of its clinical trials in Swiss and Senegalese maternities, and of its agricultural modernisation schemes in Mexico, India, and the Ivory Coast.Based on extensive research in the firm's own historical archives and the records of national and international aid agencies, the volume interrogates the legacies of this long history for international development today.

"The book represents an innovative and outstanding contribution to the economic, social, and business history of Argentina. Boyd, Kendra D., Freedom Enterprise: Black Entrepreneurship and Racial Capitalism in Detroit. (American Business, Politics, and Society) 368 pp. 2025:5 (U. Pennsylvania Pr., US) <742-198>
ISBN 978-1-5128-2742-2 hard ¥9,355.- (税込) US$ 45.00 *

Traces the rise and fall of the historic Black business community in Detroit The Great Migration saw more than six million African Americans leave the US South between 1910 and 1970. Though the experiences of migrant laborers are well-known, countless African Americans also left the South to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities and viewed business as key to Black liberation. Detroit's status as a mecca for Black entrepreneurship illuminates this overlooked aspect of the Great Migration story. In Freedom Enterprise, Kendra D. Boyd uses "migrant entrepreneurship" as a lens through which to understand the entwined histories of Black-owned business, racial capitalism, and urban space. Freedom Enterprise follows Black Southerners' journeys to Detroit during the initial wave of migration in the 1910s and 1920s, through their efforts to build a prosperous Black business community in the 1930s and 1940s, to the destruction of that community through urban renewal projects and freeway construction in the 1950s and 1960s. Combining business and social history methods to analyze an eclectic archive, Boyd chronicles migrant entrepreneurs' experiences, highlighting tales of racial and economic violence, Black women's business organizing, illegal business, communist entrepreneurs, and cooperative economics. Boyd uses the framework of racial capitalism to examine migrant entrepreneurs' experiences in twentieth-century America. In the Jim Crow South, African Americans worried about white mobs taking away their property, wealth, and lives. Though they sought refuge in Detroit, migrant entrepreneurs subsequently faced the loss of their livelihoods and the businesses they had spent decades building to the bulldozers of state-sponsored urban redevelopment initiatives. Southern migrants' "freedom enterprise"-their undertaking of attaining freedom through business-was curtailed by the reality of operating within the confines of US racial capitalism. In tracing Black entrepreneurs across the Great Migration, Freedom Enterprise provides important insights into African Americans' activism for racial and economic justice and continued racialized wealth disparities.

Schaufelbuehl, Janick Marina, Crusading for Globalization: US Multinationals and Their Opponents Since 1945. (American Business, Politics, and Society) 320 pp. 2025:2 (U. Pennsylvania Pr., US) <742-203>
ISBN 978-1-5128-2715-6 hard ¥11,434.- (税込) US$ 55.00 *

The first book to shed light on what caused corporate executives to pursue a pro-globalization agenda over the last eight decades Crusading for Globalization tells the story of an extraordinarily influential group of business executives at the helms of the largest US multinational corporations and their quest to drive globalization forward over the last eight decades. Janick Marina Schaufelbuehl argues that the spectacular expansion of international investment, trade, and production after 1945 cannot be understood without considering the role played by these corporate globalizers and the organization they created, the US Council (today's United States Council for International Business). By shaping governmental policy through their congressional lobbying and close connections to successive presidential administrations, US Council members, including executives from General Electric, Coca Cola, and IBM, among others, consistently fought for ever more market deregulation, culminating in the creation of the World Trade Organization in 1995. Crusading for Globalization is also a book about those who opposed the growing might of multinationals. In the years immediately after World War II, resistance came from business protectionists, before labor and policymakers from the Global South joined the effort in the early 1970s. Schaufelbuehl breaks new ground by offering a panorama of this early anti-globalization movement, and by showing how the leaders of multinationals organized to limit its political influence. She also examines continuities between this early movement and the opposition to globalization that emerged at the beginning of the twenty-first century from the left and the populist right and discusses how business responded by promoting corporate social responsibility and voluntary guidelines. The first book to shed light on what caused corporate executives to pursue a pro-globalization agenda and to examine their methods for dealing with their opponents, Crusading for Globalization reveals the historical roots of today's disparities in wealth and income distribution.

"Having left this material for his writer son, my father must have wanted the story told, even if he couldn't bear to tell it himself." So begins the multigenerational story of a forgotten American dynasty, a farming family from the bean fields of southern New Jersey that became as wealthy, glamorous and powerful as Gilded Age aristocrats. The autocratic patriarch, C. F. Seabrook, was hailed as the "Henry Ford of agriculture". His son Jack, a keen businessman, was poised to take over what Life called "the biggest vegetable factory on earth." But the carefully cultivated facade-glamorous outings by horse-drawn carriage, hidden cellars of world-class wine and movie stars skinny-dipping in the pool-hid dark secrets that led to the implosion of the family business. In a compulsively readable story of class and privilege, betrayal and revenge, John Seabrook explores his complicated family legacy and dark corners of the American Dream.

For the first time since it was established 175 years ago, in the middle of the 1848/49 revolution, the Freudenberg family enterprise from the southern German town of Weinheim has had a completely source-based company history compiled. The result is a book that is not just for the Freudenberg family and all Freudenberg’s employees, but also for history lovers who would like to read a ≫business novel≪ from real life. If a company prospers through all upheavals ? starting with the foundation of the German Empire, through World War I, the hyperinflation of the 1920s, the Great Depression, the Nazi dictatorship, World War II, the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany, right up to a globalized world with a pandemic and digitalization ? and if it defies all menaces, if it remains inventive and socially committed throughout, then that is a really good story. In this book, Carsten Knop describes not just the protagonists, but also how the company reinvents itself time and again and remains successful up to the present day.

Curts, Kati, Assembling Religion: The Ford Motor Company and the Transformation of Religion in America. 304 pp. 2025:5 (New York U. Pr., US) <740-125>
ISBN 978-1-4798-3158-6 hard ¥8,108.- (税込) US$ 39.00 *

How Henry Ford institutionalized a social gospel Henry Ford did not just mass produce cars. As a member of the Episcopal Church, reader of New Thought texts, believer in the "gospel of reincarnation," mass marketer of antisemitic material, and employer who institutionalized a social gospel, Henry Ford's contributions to American models of business were informed by and produced for an America he understood to be broadly Christian. Though Ford's efforts at the head of the Ford Motor Company have commonly been understood as secular, Ford himself was explicit that his work in engineering and auto production was prophetic and meant to remake the world. This religious history of Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company repositions them within critical studies of religion, examining how Ford transformed American religious practice in the twentieth century. Drawing directly on documents from Ford's archive, it examines Ford's mass production methods and bureaucratic reforms as examples of prosperity gospel traditions, illuminating the ways manufacturing and technology intersect with American religious practice. Bridging American religious and industrial history, Assembling Religion offers a new and surprising way to understand Ford's impact on culture, commerce, and the technology of labor.

In the years after World War II, as women were being pushed from wartime jobs for returning soldiers, government and business leaders-and women themselves-saw small business ownership as a viable economic solution. In just five years, US women owned nearly a million of the nation's businesses. In the decades since, women have moved increasingly into business ownership, often outpacing male start-ups so that today, they own more than fourteen million businesses, 40 percent of all US companies. She's the Boss chronicles the forces that made entrepreneurship attractive to women. In rich detail, Debra Michals shares the stories of the countless women of all races, ethnicities, genders, and abilities who contributed to this important history. The book also explores the intersection of women's personal choices within changing social, political, and economic factors, such as the rising divorce rates of the 1960s and 1970s, ongoing workplace and credit discrimination, civil and women's rights activism and activist entrepreneurs, the 1970s recession and 1980s "Reagan Revolution," and more recently, the internet, crowd-funding, and social entrepreneurship.

Historical research into female entrepreneurs has become a burgeoning field in recent years. However, there is still a lack of studies of businesswomen based on their personal documents, and such documents seem to be rare. This book, an appraisal of the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century East-Icelandic businesswoman Palina Waage (1864-1935), fills that gap. It investigates the agency of a small-scale female entrepreneur, primarily based on her autobiography, diaries and letters, using the methodology of the history of experience and 'lived experience'.

Baker, Erik, Make Your Own Job: How the Entrepreneurial Work Ethic Exhausted America. 352 pp. 2025:1 (Harvard U. Pr., US) <735-279>
ISBN 978-0-674-29360-1 hard ¥7,276.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *

A sweeping new history of the changing meaning of work in the United States, from Horatio Alger to Instagram influencers. How Americans think about work changed profoundly over the course of the twentieth century. Thrift and persistence came to seem old-fashioned. Successful workers were increasingly expected to show initiative and enthusiasm for change-not just to do their jobs reliably but to create new opportunities for themselves and for others. Our culture of work today is more demanding than ever, even though workers haven't seen commensurate rewards.Make Your Own Job explains how this entrepreneurial work ethic took hold, from its origins in late nineteenth-century success literature to the gig economy of today, sweeping in strange bedfellows: Marcus Garvey and Henry Ford, Avon ladies and New Age hippies. Business schools and consultants exhorted managers to cultivate the entrepreneurial spirit in their subordinates, while an industry of self-help authors synthesized new ideas from psychology into a vision of work as "self-realization." Policy experts embraced the new ethic as a remedy for urban and Third World poverty. Every social group and political tendency, it seems, has had its own exemplary entrepreneurs.Historian Erik Baker argues that the entrepreneurial work ethic has given meaning to work in a world where employment is ever more precarious--and in doing so, has helped legitimize a society of mounting economic insecurity and inequality. From the advent of corporate capitalism in the Gilded Age to the economic stagnation of recent decades, Americans have become accustomed to the reality that today's job may be gone tomorrow. Where work is hard to find and older nostrums about diligent effort fall flat, the advice to "make your own job" keeps hope alive.

Turner, Paul, The Making of the Modern Organisation: From the First to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. 332 pp. 2024:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <734-384>
ISBN 978-3-031-70046-0 hard ¥35,966.- (税込) EUR 149.99 *

The Fourth Industrial Revolution will transform the global competitive landscape and as such require a radical response from organisations operating in complex, knowledge-based economies. Much like previous phases of economic, social and technological changes, there is an assumption that existing technologies will become obsolete and alternative sources of value creation must be found. These assumptions will create significant opportunities in the next revolutionary cycle, but to take advantage of these will require a new business model and organisational constructs. In charting the course of structures and dynamics over the first Three Industrial Revolutions, this book offers points of learning that can be applied to the Fourth. It offers a discussion about how organisations have emerged over time and how they learnt to adapt to industrial revolution and economic upheaval. Covering conceptual ideas about organisations as collections of individuals, the book will also highlight the practice of organisation from the First to the Fourth Industrial Revolution with examples across Europe the USA and Asia. Building on the ideas and concepts in The Making of the Modern Manager, this book explores the changing business contexts through industrial revolutions, the practice of organisation in response to these changes, the theory of organisation and the definition of organisation

Taylor, James, Sexism in the City: Women Stockbrokers in Modern Britain. 320 pp. 2025:3 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <733-427>
ISBN 978-0-19-887981-7 hard ¥28,314.- (税込) GB£ 99.00 *

Sexism in the City is the first book to trace the history of women stockbrokers in the United Kingdom from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth centuries. Forgotten pioneers, these businesswomen fought against the odds to establish successful brokerages across the country and in the process, challenged society's beliefs about women and money. The book also tells the story of how the nation's stock exchanges denied them membership for generations, mobilizing increasingly desperate arguments to try to justify their exclusion, until women finally won the right to join the London Stock Exchange in 1973. Though historians have recently reassessed women's role in the development of capitalism, highlighting their roles as investors and entrepreneurs, they have assumed that because women were not members of stock exchanges, they were not active as financial intermediaries until modern times. By spotlighting the lives and careers of women who worked as stockbrokers outside male-monopolized institutions, this book reframes the historical development of finance in several ways. It highlights the extent to which the seemingly gender-neutral institutions and practices of finance were, in fact, based on gendered ideologies and exclusions. It argues that focusing on institutions only reveals part of the financial ecosystem, meaning that we miss what was happening outside the formal market. And it challenges London-centric interpretations of financial history, asking questions about the financial cultures existing outside the metropolis. If we look beyond the official exchanges--and beyond London--a more diverse financial environment comes into view. The history uncovered in Sexism in the City also helps to address problems with financial culture in the twenty-first century. Current reform initiatives are unlikely to succeed unless they acknowledge that for hundreds of years, professional identities and institutional structures in finance have been based on the denigration and marginalization of women. Acknowledging the efforts of those female stockbrokers who challenged misogynistic beliefs and defied men's monopoly of high finance by forging their own careers is the first step towards imagining a different kind of market.

What role did German big business play in the persecution of European Jews during the Holocaust? What were its motivations? And how did it respond to changing social and economic circumstances after the war? Profits and Persecution examines how the leaders of Germany's largest industrial and financial enterprises played a key part in the catastrophes and crimes of their nation in the first half of the twentieth century. Drawing on evidence concerning the roughly one hundred most significant German firms of the Nazi era, Peter Hayes explores how large German corporations dealt with Jews, their property, and their labor. This study unites business history and the history of the Holocaust to consider both the economic and personal motivations that rendered German corporate leaders complicit in the actions of the Nazi Party. In doing so, it demonstrates how ordinary, familiar thought processes came to serve the ideological purposes of the Third Reich with lethal consequences.

Yamazaki, Toshio, Relationships Between Industry and Bank in Germany: A Historical Study of Personnel Connection Built Through Interlocking Directorate and Bank's Advisory Council System. 550 pp. 2024:10 (Springer, GW) <732-275>
ISBN 978-981-9749-95-9 hard ¥31,170.- (税込) EUR 129.99 *

The objective of this book is to elucidate the characteristics and significance of the relationships between industry and banks in Germany. This is the first book to undertake a historical and comprehensive examination of the personnel connections established through the interlocking directorates and the bank's advisory council system, using cases of Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Bank, and Commerzbank. This book addresses the mandates of the chairman and vice chairman and the distribution of industrial sectors to which companies belong. It also considers the personnel relations that are built and maintained. The book considers both direct and indirect interlocking directorates comprising the members of top management organs, namely the supervisory board and board of directors. It also examines the personnel networks therein, including those of second- and third-party enterprises, by applying social network analysis. In addition, the book examines the conditions for members of central and regional advisory councils and their top management positions. Furthermore, the functions supported by inter-firm personnel relationships via interlocking directorates and banks' advisory council systems are examined in terms of information symmetry and conflict resolution, and coordination of the interests among enterprises. This book explores the interlocking directorate processes from bank to industry and vice versa, wherein the common recognition of a management issue is promoted through the information flow and media based on personnel connections. The book explains the system by which various conflicting interests among enterprises are resolved through discussion rather than market competition. It also elucidates the industry-bank relationships and their changes in the history of the development of German capitalism and enterprises. Thus, it provides a combined analysis of the structure and function of the personnel connections of large German banks.

Yamazaki, Toshio, Japanese and German Enterprises: Comparison of Industrial Cocentration System and Business Management. 524 pp. 2024:10 (Springer, GW) <732-278>
ISBN 978-981-9748-79-2 hard ¥31,170.- (税込) EUR 129.99 *

The objective of this book is to analyze and compare the processes of corporate expansion of postwar Japan and Germany. It examines the evolution of distinctive Japanese and German business management styles through the adoption of American management methods, thereby establishing a system of industrial concentration in contrast to the US de-concentration policy. This is the first time that the book draws on a range of topics related to business administration, including the concentration of enterprises, management and production systems, management education, marketing, organizational structure, and corporate governance. The book compares the Japanese and German models. Japanese enterprises developed a management style that was suitable for American and Japanese markets, in part due to the underdeveloped Asian markets. Meanwhile, German enterprises established a management style for European markets. The book considers the specificities of the Japanese management model, predicated on thorough cost reduction and few product defects. In contrast, the German management model placed a premium on differentiation based on product quality and functionality, with a particular focus on core markets and the skills of the workforce. The book posits that corporate expansion was a determining factor in the regionalization of each country. Japan underwent a transformation toward "Asianization," which depended on production and markets in Asia after the 1990s. Germany, on the other hand, consistently pursued "Europeanization" after the war in two complementary ways: (1) a heavy reliance on the European region and (2) the endeavor to advance European integration. Transformations in business management are analyzed using the author's two original frameworks: (1) The term "total system of business management" denotes the fundamental conditional structures that regulate and define the established methods of business management within the confines of capitalism in a specific country. (2) The term "reframing" is used to explain the adaptation, modification, and adjustment of one country's particular management style to another nation. These arguments reframe how we understand the historical processes of corporate expansion and provide milestones for a comparative study of management through common factors and characteristics of management.

This is a business history of soy that reveals how Japanese imperial and military institutions and financial-mercantile-industrial interests created a role for soy as a versatile raw material and global commodity beginning in the 19th century, even before the Western world recognized this "oilseed." Originating in the rich food cultures of Asia, soy is praised as the "magic bean." About 360 million tons are produced in the world today, and it is traded globally to become food, feed, and fuel. It is the second largest source of vegetable oil in the world, and soy meal is an essential feed without which the modern livestock industries could not exist. Its dominance today is often accounted for in terms of its versatile nature. This book, however, argues that soy was transformed into a versatile industrial raw material and global commodity through the political-economic strategies of state and business actors engaged in the development of the capitalist world-economy. By studying little-known Japanese historical documents and corporate records, and focusing on the less-researched vegetable oil and industrial uses of soy, this book provides a better understanding of how this traditional Asian food was transformed into a global commodity embedded in contradictions. Promoted as a healthy and sustainable food source, soy is also a destructive cash crop whose cultivation and use have played a significant role in the current climate crisis. Based on this case of soy, the book provides a structural understanding of broader food and agriculture systems in the history of capitalism, making it of interest to students at an advanced level, academics, and researchers in the fields of business history, corporate governance, Japanese business, as well as the political economy of food and agriculture.Chapters 2, 3, and the Conclusion of this book are freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Kalling, Thomas / Bengtsson, Lars, A Historical Review of Swedish Strategy Research and the Rigor-Relevance Gap. (Elements in Business Strategy) 94 pp. 2024:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <731-292>

There are many explanations for the so-called rigor-relevance gap in academic research on strategic management. This Element reviews the existing literature on the matter and argues that it must go beyond the typical explanations of knowledge and language differences and look at more fundamental, societal, and cultural explanations. The empirical focus of this Element is the history and possible particularities of strategic management research in Sweden where the authors show how almost 300 years of relevance-centered research have undergone significant changes over the last 30 years, and that the historical development is based very much on societal pressure, academic culture and shifting perspectives on the role of academic research. The authors conclude by offering a couple of examples of how Swedish research, close to its traditional approaches, still can contribute to relevance and thus help balance the rigor-relevance divide.

ISBN 978-1-032-52280-7 hard ¥38,610.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This edited volume constitutes the first available comprehensive business history of Latin America available in English. It offers a unique synthesis of the development of capitalism in Latin America that takes into consideration the complexities of each country, while simultaneously understanding broader commonalities. With chapters written by a group of internationally renowned senior scholars with a long trajectory in business historical research, the volume is divided into two major areas. First, the development of capitalism in some of the major economies of the region (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru) through the lens of management strategic decisions and entrepreneurial activity. And second, the long-term evolution of factors affecting the region's particular evolution of capitalism and business systems. They include the rise of environmentally sustainable businesses; the impact of crime on entrepreneurial activity; the evolution of family firms, the changing strategies of multinational corporations in the region; the evolution of business groups; the role of female entrepreneurs; and the challenges for conducting business in a region with poor infrastructure. This insightful collection serves both as a straightforward introduction for those looking for a broad understanding of the region and for those interested in conducting comparative studies between Latin America and other areas of the world. It will be of direct appeal to researchers and advanced students of business and economic history and international business in particular.

Berghoff, Hartmut / Grieger, Manfred, Die Geschichte des Hauses Bahlsen: Keks - Krieg - Konsum 1911-1974. 648 S. 2024:8 (Wallstein Vlg., GW) <730-321>
ISBN 978-3-8353-5773-0 hard ¥6,954.- (税込) EUR 29.00

Dodek, Adam, Heenan Blaikie: The Making and Unmaking of a Great Canadian Law Firm. (Law and Society) 320 pp. 2024:10 (U. British Columbia Pr., CN) <729-403>
ISBN 978-0-7748-7073-3 hard ¥9,136.- (税込) US$ 43.95 *

In 1973, three young lawyers established Heenan Blaikie. It would become one of Canada's highest-profile law firms, counting former prime ministers, premiers, and Supreme Court justices in its ranks. It was like a family, according to many who worked there. But it was a dysfunctional family. In 2014, the firm's dramatic collapse became front-page news.Based on extensive interviews with firm lawyers and legal industry insiders, Heenan Blaikie is the story of a respected law firm that ultimately buckled under weak governance and management. Heenan Blaikie seemed to punch above its weight: bilingual, humane, national with international aspirations. But beneath its unique culture as a kinder, gentler law firm lay workplace bullying, challenges for women and visible minority lawyers, and sexual harassment.Adam Dodek, an unbiased outsider, situates the firm's evolution within the context of a changing legal profession and society, producing an account that is gripping from beginning to end.
