Cundy, Paul (ed.),
Psychoanalytic Perspectives on the Israel-Gaza Conflict. 129 pp. 2026:5 (Routledge, UK) <765-845>
ISBN 978-1-041-23517-0 hard ¥44,819.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book creates a vital space for psychoanalytic thought on the Israel-Palestine conflict, one of the most polarizing and emotionally charged geopolitical struggles of our time. In the wake of the horrific events of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza, marked by death, famine, and destruction, the global community has been deeply divided. These divisions have also reverberated within the psychoanalytic profession, straining relationships between patients and clinicians, colleagues, and professional organizations. Unlike other conflicts, this struggle often leads to such extreme polarization that thought and speech are shut down by accusations of hatred or prejudice, making meaningful dialogue nearly impossible.Refusing the collusion of silence in the face of alleged war crimes and genocide, this book offers a thoughtful exploration of the psychological mechanisms underlying the conflict and our responses to it. It traces the historical contexts of the conflict, from its origins in 1948 and earlier, while examining contemporary manifestations of trauma, identity, and collective psychology. The chapters are carefully sequenced to move through themes of context, applied psychoanalytic theory, considerations of therapeutic and community interventions, personal narratives, and creative approaches to healing and reconciliation. This book is intended for a wide audience, including psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, scholars of peace and conflict studies, Middle Eastern politics and history, trauma studies, social psychology, and international relations. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

Ideal and Non-Ideal Theory. (Elements in Political Psychology) 75 pp. 2026:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <765-753>
ISBN 978-1-009-61231-9 hard ¥17,000.- (税込) GB£ 55.00
ISBN 978-1-009-61228-9 paper ¥5,563.- (税込) GB£ 18.00
This Element provides an opinionated survey of the ideal and nonideal theory debate in political philosophy. It adopts a minimal conception of ideal theory as 'theorizing that aims to characterize ideal or perfect justice' and investigates four major questions about ideal theory. First, does ideal theory provide a benchmark for evaluating what is more just than what? Second, does it provide a target for long-term reform? Third, does it provide a gauge of appropriate or permissible responses to injustice? Fourth, to what extent should we do ideal theory? The core message is that ideal theory is not uniquely or especially well suited to serving as a benchmark, target, or gauge, and it deserves no pride of place in the discipline. Nevertheless, ideal theory is somewhat valuable and we should hope it remains one active research program among many. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Breaking the Deadly Dance of Racism: Perpetrators, Targets, Allies, and Bystanders. 400 pp. 2026:5 (Wiley, US) <765-1270>
ISBN 978-1-394-31090-6 paper ¥9,684.- (税込) US$ 42.95
Break the silence and inaction that perpetuate racism in everyday life When racist incidents occur, they're too often met with silence - perpetrators remain unaware, targets feel powerless, bystanders freeze, and allies hesitate. Breaking the Deadly Dance of Racism provides a comprehensive framework for understanding how these four roles maintain racism and offers concrete intervention strategies. Drawing on decades of research, psychologists Derald W. Sue and Lisa B. Spanierman reveal the hidden scripts keeping racism thriving. The book examines unique barriers each role faces - from perpetrators' defensive reactions to targets' racial trauma to bystanders' diffusion of responsibility to allies' performative gestures. Readers discover how cultural scripts like color-blind ideology protect racism from challenge, and learn detailed microintervention strategies for making racism visible, disarming biased behavior, educating offenders, and mobilizing support. The book also offers: Evidence-based guidance for developing critical consciousness about how racism operates at individual, institutional, and cultural levelsConcrete strategies for overcoming the fear, uncertainty, and social costs that prevent people from taking anti-racist actionDetailed intervention tactics tailored to the specific challenges faced by perpetrators, targets, bystanders, and alliesPractical approaches for combating both everyday microaggressions and systemic macroaggressions in organizations and societyFoundational practices for racial socialization that help parents and educators raise antiracist children through microprotections Essential reading for educators, mental health practitioners, diversity consultants, and activists, Breaking the Deadly Dance of Racism transforms abstract commitments into actionable strategies. By revealing how silence makes us complicit and providing specific intervention tools, this book empowers readers to break the deadly dance.

Bennett, Philip,
From Communism to Work Democracy: The Social and Political Life of Wilhelm Reich. (Historical Materialism Book Series 379) 540 pp. 2026:4 (Brill, NE) <765-1386>
ISBN 978-90-04-75670-0 hard ¥42,416.- (税込) EUR 160.00
From Communism to Work Democracy is the first book devoted solely to Wilhelm Reich's social and political thought and activities. It is an intellectual history tracing Reich's evolution from a 1920s-style communism to work democracy, a form of anarchism, all shaped by his understanding of Marxism. 'Communism' refers to the radical social policies adopted in the Soviet Union following the Russian Revolution, and to the political parties in both Austria and Germany to which Reich belonged (1927-33). Expelled from the Comintern in December 1933, by late 1936 Reich came to treat 'Communism' as synonymous with Stalinism. His later 'anti-Communism' was a critique of the Soviet Union as described in The Mass Psychology of Fascism (1946). In the 1950s he underwent a criminal prosecution by the United States' government, leading to the burning of his books and his death in prison.

In so doing, it offers a new understanding on established topics in the field of health psychology to create a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of health and illness that reflects the diversity of human experience. The book explores the importance of biopsychosocial processes in health and illness, through an exploration of socio-cultural factors beyond the restrictive western-centric models of health to include indigenous populations and marginalised groups. This includes recognising the impact of systemic oppression on health outcomes and advocating for policies that address health disparities of diverse populations in order to tailor interventions to meet their specific needs. Research studies present examples of how gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, culture and disabilities intersect with health outcomes in the exploration and the perpetuation of health disparities.Primarily written for undergraduates, the book also provides a firm foundation for graduate students, teachers and practitioners in psychology, nursing and the allied health professions.

Lacan, Jacques,
The Logic of Fantasy: The Seminar of Jacques Lacan. Book XIV. Ed. by J.-A. Miller. Tr. by A. Price. 352 pp. 2026:3 (Polity Pr., UK) <765-1395>
ISBN 978-1-5095-6134-6 hard ¥10,147.- (税込) US$ 45.00
'Logic of the fantasy': the expression recurs throughout the Seminar as a leitmotif, yet not a single lesson is devoted to it; not even a briefly sustained development. Does this mean that the logic of the fantasy is here playing the role of some new-fangled mirage? No it doesn't, not if we can take on board how this logic is the very site at which Lacan's comments converge, which is what I have sought to indicate by entitling the final chapter 'The axiom of the fantasy'.It begins with him audaciously blending the mathematical Klein group and the Cartesian cogito, modified in such a way as to offer up the alternative, 'Either I am not, or I am not thinking'. On this basis, Lacan summarises the course of an analysis in four phases.A further mathematico-psychoanalytic blend: the sexual act is illuminated by the light of the Golden number. What ensues is that 'there is no sexual act', this being the first trace of what was to become a pons asinorum: 'there is no sexual relating'.The reader will also come across the invention of a 'value of jouissance', inspired by Marx, and will be surprised to see the big Other, the 'locus of speech', being newly defined as 'the body', the primordial locus of writing.A good many other gripping insights and constructions await this reader, if he is minded to follow the meandering, the stalling and the about-turns, along with advances and flashes of brilliance, an obstinate and profoundly honest thinking that, whenever it comes up against a stumbling block, never skirts around it but endeavours to turn it into a cornerstone.

Liberation Psychology and Refusal: Confronting Capitalist Alienation, Ideology, and Nature. (Concepts for Critical Psychology) 144 pp. 2026:5 (Routledge, UK) <765-1397>
ISBN 978-1-041-04536-6 hard ¥44,819.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

To refuse is to assume a stance against that which is. We take up refusal when we push back, disinvest, ignore, and move away from. Although we tend to acknowledge the political character of refusal, the psychological character of our struggles to refuse is often not given requisite attention. Neglecting to grapple with refusal's psychological components can, however, have fracturing, detrimental effects on our political struggles. This book considers what it might mean to wield psychology for purposes of refusal - a rather complicated task when we consider that most of psychology has sought to pathologise, manage, or individualise refusal. The book grapples with three anti-capitalist refusals that have been advanced in the liberation psychology tradition, namely: de-alienation, de-ideologisation, and de-naturalisation. Each of these refusals is fleshed out with a reflection on a practical example from the author's community-engaged work in South Africa. Thus, the book seeks to demonstrate how we might put refusal's conceptual components into practice. In this, readers are offered a set of praxis-oriented modalities through which to honour refusal within the liberation psychology paradigm. The book is intended for academics, educators, psychological practitioners, and students interested in drawing from critical, anti-capitalist traditions within psychology and perhaps, also, outside of psychology.

In this illuminating and informative book, Daniel Shaw provides a succinct and highly accessible introduction to his concept of Traumatic Narcissism, describing the psychology of the traumatizing narcissist and the impact of their behaviour on victims.Distinguishing the Traumatic Narcissism Theory (TNT) from other dominant psychoanalytic theories of narcissism, Shaw begins by retelling the ancient myth of Narcissus with an emphasis on the character of Echo, the victim of Narcissus' cruelty. Acknowledging the seminal contributions of Sigmund Freud and highlighting the work of Otto Kernberg and Heinz Kohut, Shaw clarifies that, rather than treating narcissistic personality disorders, TNT is intended for the therapeutic healing and recovery of victims of narcissistic abuse. Shaw highlights the impact of a wide range of thinkers on the development of TNT, from Erich Fromm to the relational analysts and contemporary traumatologists. Emphasizing the clinical utility of the traumatic narcissism concepts, Shaw integrates both theoretical and clinical material to show how TNT enables victims to recover their wounded subjectivity and heal the self-alienation that results from the traumatizing narcissist's manipulation and abuse. This book is a vital resource for clinicians working with victims of narcissistic abuse, for those conducting psychoanalytic and trauma training programmes and for the wider public interested in the impact of narcissistic abuse and exploitation.

Smithson, Michael,
The Psychology of Ignorance. 336 pp. 2026:5 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <765-1405>
ISBN 978-0-19-896060-7 hard ¥32,146.- (税込) GB£ 104.00
Historically, the psychology of ignorance has been under-explored, despite being a topic of great importance to anyone wishing to understand human behaviour. In this volume, Smithson develops foundations for a psychology of ignorance by providing an extensive and critical account of what psychology has to say about ignorance. The book's scope includes the nature and causes of ignorance, when and why we attribute ignorance to ourselves or to others, how we feel, think, and behave when we are aware of our ignorance, when and why we choose to be ignorant, and how and why we impose ignorance on one another. Its primary goals are making psychology's implicit treatments of ignorance explicit, identifying missing connections within psychology on this topic as well as connections with other disciplines, and rebalancing psychology's largely negative orientation towards ignorance. As well as focusing on the nature of ignorance and its neglect as a research topic by psychology, the book examines varieties of dysfunctional ignorance and their relations with psychological disorders, investigates decision making under various kinds of ignorance and uncertainty, and explores how and why we create and impose ignorance on each other through indirection, secrecy, lies, and censoring.

Soreanu, Raluca,
The Psychic Life of Fragments: On Splitting and the Experience of Time in Psychoanalysis. (Relational Perspectives Book Series) 240 pp. 2026:4 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2026:5 <765-1406>
ISBN 978-1-032-71591-9 hard ¥46,365.- (税込) GB£ 150.00
ISBN 978-1-032-71589-6 paper ¥10,815.- (税込) GB£ 34.99
The Psychic Life of Fragments rethinks trauma and psychic fragmentation starting from the psychoanalytic clinic. What does it mean to work with fragments in psychoanalysis? What is the psychic life of fragments? And what can a fragment do? Raluca Soreanu writes about trauma, fragmentation and the radical plasticity of the psyche. Reconstructing Sandor Ferenczi's trauma theory, she articulates an original vocabulary of fractures, splits, atomisations, pulverisations, leakages, detritus and psychic dematerialisation along with new formations, protective membranes, expansions, contagions and growths. She approaches the scene of trauma from new angles, paying attention to oblique lines and asymmetric encounters. Mobilizing clinical and literary vignettes, this book further argues for a minor psychoanalysis, one that emerges at the intersection of four types of theoretical-clinical experimentation: a psychoanalysis of scars, a psychoanalysis of organs, an eventful psychoanalysis and a blue psychoanalysis. This book is important for clinicians and trainees in psychoanalysis, for mental health practitioners working with trauma, and for psychosocial and psychoanalytic thinkers. It is written to be used, between the psychoanalytic chair and the couch, especially at challenging times, in the transference and in the world.

What happens when you are alone in nature and why does it matter? By looking at exceptional experiences of solitude in nature, Eugene Hughes offers a clear articulation of the phenomenon that greatly enhances our comprehension of the human-nature relationship.Through interviews with people around the world, including land artists living in caves, wilderness rites of passage guides in the Sahara Desert, and ancestral healers in Amazonian rain forests, Hughes discovers that alone with nature, under certain conditions, people experience an embodied state of connection to their environment that has an extraordinary effect on their sense of self. Hughes names this state environmental attunement, identifies its defining characteristics, the conditions it occurs under, and what effect it has on people's sense of self provides. Including extracts from interviews and drawing on recent breakthroughs in cognitive sciences, aesthetics and psychology, he demonstrates how this unique state of consciousness stands out from other states. This is a powerful framework for interdisciplinary discourse, inspiring fresh ways for our relationship with nature to be used in treating mental health, improving contact with nature in cities, and reevaluating the quality of everyday modern life.

What if sustainable peace really starts within the human heart and mind?Psychosocial Peacebuilding places the lived experience of individuals at the center of peace efforts. This timely and engaging book offers a clear, practical, and inspiring guide to understanding and applying psychosocial approaches to peacebuilding theory and practice. It provides both a much-needed conceptual framework to understand and address the broad range of psychosocial factors that shape conflict dynamics and peacebuilding outcomes, and hands-on tools drawn from more than 25 years of global field experience. It looks at how conflict affects psychosocial realities, and how those realities, in turn, influence the trajectory of peace or violence.Dr. Katrien Hertog explores the what, why, how, and who of psychosocial peacebuilding through case studies, scientific insights, lived experiences, and practical exercises. She introduces an integrated model developed by the International Association for Human Values (IAHV) and the Art of Living as a rare example of a conceptual framework for psychosocial peacebuilding that uses evidence-based practices and is implemented with success around the globe in a variety of settings with huge multiplication possibilities. This model exemplifies intra-personal transformation as the cornerstone and foundation for peacebuilding, while at the same time addressing structural change, engaging with behavioral and relational dimensions of peacebuilding, and strengthening underlying human and peace-promoting values.Whether you're a seasoned peacebuilder, policymaker, student, or newly exploring the psychosocial dimensions of peacebuilding, this guidebook offers a new lens to make sense of complex, interwoven factors and a structured way to understand these issues as integral to the peace process. It makes the case that psychosocial dimensions are not secondary, but foundational to sustainable peace.Psychosocial Peacebuilding is poised to become a defining reference in an emerging field, offering not only a roadmap for practitioners, but a vision for a more integrated and effective approach to peace.

Race Beyond Vision: A Semiotic-Cultural Study of Racial Perception and Blindness. (Latin American Voices) 142 pp. 2026:1 (Springer, GW) <764-412>
ISBN 978-3-032-15317-3 hard ¥37,110.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book shows how racial perception goes beyond the limits of sight. Drawing on Semiotic Cultural Psychology, it challenges the dominant visuocentric paradigm that equates race with visually apprehended phenotypic traits. Through an in-depth case study of a congenitally blind individual, the author demonstrates that racial distinctions are not self-evident to the senses but emerge through socially mediated, symbolic, and affective processes. Integrating insights from psychology, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and disability studies, the volume explores how race operates as a dynamic, culturally constructed sign within intersubjective relations. It critically revisits Brazilian racial classification systems, affirmative action controversies, and heteroidentification procedures, exposing the contradictions between race as a social construct and the visual essentialism embedded in current practices. The book advances a theoretical framework that reconceptualizes racial identity as a dimension of body image-biopsychosocial, historically situated, and affectively charged. Combining rigorous theoretical analysis with qualitative methodology, Race Beyond Vision: A Semiotic-Cultural Study of Racial Perception and Blindness contributes to debates on race, perception, and embodiment by revealing how blind individuals participate fully in the social construction of race. It will appeal to scholars and graduate students in cultural psychology, critical race studies, semiotics, and disability studies, as well as researchers interested in epistemology and qualitative inquiry.

At the crossroads of theater, art, and psychology, Lev Vygotsky's compelling theory of aesthetics helped shape the intellectual currents of Russian Modernism. This new book combines our understanding of Vygotsky's scientific and artistic legacies, bridging the divide between human consciousness and the transformative power of art.The Aesthetics of Lev Vygotsky: A Sociocultural Approach to Theater introduces the concept of Vygotsky's aesthetics, offering an unprecedented exploration of Lev Vygotsky's early writings on art, literature, and theater. Long overshadowed by his later work in psychology, these formative texts reveal a compelling theory of art's psychological function, shaped by the artistic and intellectual currents of Russian Modernism. By rereading Vygotsky's aesthetic writings in dialogue with this context and with his mature psychological theories, this book challenges the divide often drawn between his scientific and artistic legacies, illustrating how Vygotsky's thinking oscillates fluidly between disciplines, bridging the study of human consciousness with the transformative power of art. Through this interdisciplinary lens, Vygotsky's aesthetics emerges as a distinct and timely framework; one that speaks not only to scholars of theater and psychology, but to anyone interested in how art helps us understand what it means to be human.

The Fractured Subject investigates the relationship of the work of Walter Benjamin and Sigmund Freud, centered around the concept of the fractured subject. Through a reading of Benjamin's work on sovereignty and myth, Betty Schulz establishes the emergence of this fractured subject in the Baroque and links these themes to 'Mourning and Melancholia' and two of Freud's case studies, showing that melancholia and possession emerge as two responses to the baroque loss of a cosmological horizon. Turning to Benjamin's work on the nineteenth century in the Arcades Project, Schulz delineates the persistence of this fractured subject, showing how Benjamin conceptualises its development over the course of modernity while analyzing the change of memory and experience in modernity. Finally, having introduced the importance of the dream in the Arcades Project and associated work, Schulz examines Benjamin's dream theory, establishing the ways it draws from Freud, as well as Benjamin's concept of awakening as a therapeutic, collective, political gesture that points beyond the fractured subject.

The Observer-Centric Universe, Quantum Mechanics and the Path to AGI Alignment. (Palgrave Pivot) 376 pp. 2026:3 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <764-1409>
ISBN 978-3-032-15627-3 hard ¥37,110.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book explores the profound challenge of artificial general intelligence (AGI) alignment, arguing that an algorithmic approach to creating conscious and empathic AI is fundamentally limited. Building on the author's N-Frame model, it extends this critique to the P ? NP problem, proposing that consciousness reflects a non-computable process beyond formal algorithmic closure. Drawing on philosophy, cognitive science, physics, mathematics, and evolutionary theory, the book introduces a quantum-mechanical AdS/CFT-inspired framework linking thermodynamic models of the observer with functional contextualism and evolution. It argues that solving AGI alignment requires recognising the intrinsic boundary between computation and cognition. The book concludes by exploring how truly conscious AI could promote prosocial behaviour, morality, empathy, and trust, fostering social cohesion and redefining intelligence and consciousness itself.

Unprepared For Death: The Psychological Richness Of Mortality. 136 pp. 2026:3 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <764-1411>
ISBN 978-3-032-15191-9 hard ¥26,506.- (税込) EUR 99.99
The book offers a profound insight into the reasons why a great many people feel disconnected from the concept of death and, as a remedy, offers a series of pathways to reconcile them. As an inner abyss, the prospect of death reflects our deepest anxieties about the end of our life, its inevitability, and the mystery that surrounds it. However, this awareness also holds a contradictory promise: by accepting this shadow and exploring it, we might find a greater appreciation for life and a clearer vision of our true priorities. Central to personal development is the awareness that life and death are not mutually exclusive but inclusive states of mind. Death is an intrinsic feature of life. As this book will explore: at the interface of the two, we find a fertile ground for the emergence of psychological richness.

The Paradox of Passion: How Rewards Covertly Control Motivation challenges conventional wisdom about motivation. It reveals why legacy research findings are often misinterpreted and overgeneralized, leading to unrealistic beliefs about the self and others that foster ineffective strategy use impeding optimal learning and performance. The book provides cross-disciplinary evidence emphasizing the essential role of rewards as a biological and behavioral driver of motivation. It challenges the cliched idea of intrinsic motivation, pointing out the flaws in pursuing passion and purpose without considering how the brain regulates motivation through personalized rewards. Evidence reveals that a singular focus on passion is an unattainable ideal, akin to a mythical "motivation unicorn." Instead of hopes and dreams, the book offers practical insights and research-based strategies for enhancing learning and performance by effectively leveraging how the brain uses innate reward pathways to get what we want and sometimes obtain what we need.

Objective Mental Reality: The 'Dark Matter' of the Social Sciences: The Psychological and Specialized Parts of Objective Mental Reality. 241 pp. 2026:3 (Springer, GW) <764-1418>
ISBN 978-3-032-15213-8 hard ¥39,761.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book explores the concept of Objective Mental Reality (OMR)-a fundamental, intersubjectively formed symbolic layer of consciousness. In Part I, it delves into foundational psychological constructions such as the soul, mind, consciousness, and intelligence, as well as the nuanced roles of personality, beliefs, and cultural codes. These entities are examined not only as subjective experiences but as components of a shared mental reality that can be studied objectively. The section further investigates the processes through which the entities of the psyche are constituted and reveals their role in shaping OMR. Parts II and III address specialized domains of OMR - including religious faith, mathematics, art, and media - as well as OMR's relationship to time, language, and artificial intelligence. The book proposes a new scientific paradigm in which the anthropomorphic world is understood as a product of collective mental creativity constituted within the OMR of society. Through and by means of OMR, humanity comprehends the universe and becomes aware of its own nature, while the psyche transforms from a passive mirror of being into its active co-creator.

This book examines the contribution of shared book reading to various aspects of children's social-emotional development across a broad range of environments and with different reading agents, including home (parents), educational settings (teachers), and clinics (bibliotherapists). It demonstrates how shared book reading creates a safe and nurturing environment in which children can express themselves and learn about social relationships by discussing the characters' intentions, feelings, thoughts, desires, beliefs, and actions. The book explores the ways in which adults engage with young children in interactive reading, fostering aspects of social-emotional competence, including emotional knowledge, empathy, self-awareness, prosocial behavior, morality, values, and effective communication skills. This volume explores shared book reading interventions aiming to promote social-emotional competence from toddlerhood to childhood. It addresses shared book reading with at-risk children from different socio-economic backgrounds. The book concludes with recommendations for how parents and preschool teachers can promote social-emotional competence through shared-book reading. Key areas of coverage include: Emotion and mental-state discourse during shared book reading: How parents, teachers, and children talk about emotions, thoughts, and social situations while reading together, and why shared reading is a uniquely rich context for mental-state dialogue.Cultural and contextual differences in shared-reading interactions: Cross-cultural patterns in emotion discourse, parental practices, and adult-child meaning-making across diverse sociocultural settings.Story features that shape emotion discourse: How elements such as human vs. animal protagonists, narrative structure, and story themes influence emotion talk and social-emotional understanding.Shared book-reading interventions at home and in educational settings: Evidence-based programs that strengthen children's empathy, emotional competence, and prosocial behavior through guided reading practices.Shared reading and children's social-emotional development: Correlational and meta-analytic findings linking shared book reading with gains in emotion understanding, empathy, prosocial conduct, and broader socio-emotional skills. Shared Book Reading and Children's Social-Emotional Competence is an essential resource for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as educators, bibiotherapists, and other practitioners in developmental, clinical child, and school psychology, social psychology, educational psychology, educational policy and practice, clinical social work, public health, and all related disciplines.

Be a Better Bystander: Transforming Passive Observers into Active Responders. 144 pp. 2026:2 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <764-1420>
ISBN 979-88-8180-590-6 hard ¥13,909.- (税込) GB£ 45.00 *

The nature of an emergency is complex; after all, emergencies "emerge" suddenly without warning and typically require immediate attention. Bystanders are often the first line of defense in these situations. Unfortunately, in many situations where help is needed such as health-related emergencies, bullying, sexual misconduct, and bias, the default is to not get involved. The goal of this book is to identify the many obstacles that prevent people from taking action, and then provide evidence-based helping strategies to transform passive bystanders into pro-active responders. This timely and significant book, Be a Better Bystander: Transforming Passive Observers Into Active Responders, provides a toolbox of practical strategies for academic institutions, residence life personnel, diversity/education/inclusion educators, public health education advocates, and community activists. This book would also make a great supplemental text for courses in social psychology, health psychology, women's studies, and bias-related courses.

Jungian Perspectives on Santa Muerte Devotees in Mexico: Worshipping Death. (Routledge Studies in Anthropology) 240 pp. 2026:4 (Routledge, UK) <763-867>
ISBN 978-1-032-18753-2 hard ¥47,910.- (税込) GB£ 155.00
This groundbreaking ethnography offers a deep psychological framework for understanding the Santa Muerte (Saint Death) phenomenon in Mexico. Emerging from a social landscape marked by ultra-violent criminality, government corruption, soaring rates of femicide, forced disappearances, and pervasive impunity, devotion to Santa Muerte signals a profound breakdown of the traditional Hispano-Christian image of God. Her veneration can be understood as a psychological response from a society grappling with "bad death", where loss and violence are ever-present in daily life.Anchored in intimate case studies and a Jungian archetypal interpretation, the book demonstrates how Santa Muerte's inherent moral ambiguity enables devotees to navigate the blurred boundaries between good and evil, safety and peril, and justice and lawlessness. She stands as a potent response to the ongoing socio-political and psychological instability created by Mexico's dominant patriarchal institutions (state, church, cartels). The book explores the spirituality of the most vulnerable and marginalised in response to persistent threats and the collapse of conventional safety nets, arguing that devotion to Santa Muerte functions as a critical psychological container for destructive forces, offering a sense of order and control amid the real and existential dangers of a society living through the chaos of an "apocalypse." This is essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary Mexican Studies as it highlights the psychological impact of life-near-death.

ISBN 978-0-19-889157-4 paper ¥18,542.- (税込) GB£ 59.99
What do you do when there is no right answer? Often working in mental health, disability, broader health and social care fields, professionals are required to make complex decisions, where right course of action is not very clear. There are moments when personal values, professional ethics, national and international laws, and organisational policies collide and raise conflicts. In such moments, professionals are required to make difficult decisions while weaving through individual needs and institutional expectations as well as broader societal values. Human Rights and Wrong in Psychology and Psychiatry offers a unique approach to ethical decision-making - not through rigid rules or abstract ethical theories, but rather by presenting interdisciplinary and global perspectives. It urges practitioners to study how circumstances and positionality influence their perception of right and wrong. At the heart of the book is a practical, flexible framework for reflective practice. Readers are encouraged to examine how their own values, cultural backgrounds, and professional roles shape their responses to difficult situations. In doing so, the book fosters deeper ethical awareness and equips practitioners to respond with greater confidence, empathy, and integrity in complex care environments. With contributions from leading practitioners from across the world and from a range of professions, the book invites you to think through with them some profoundly difficult dilemmas. An essential resource for students, trainees, and experienced professionals alike, it prepares you to make better decisions in the future, by understanding the factors that influence you and how you respond to them.

Reimagining Psychoanalytic Theory in the Climate Polycrisis re-visions psychoanalysis by considering indigenous philosophy and the work of Giorgio Agamben.Ryan LaMothe argues that the origins of psychoanalysis have tacitly produced, with some qualifications, not only dismissive attitudes and relations toward so-called "primitive" peoples and their philosophies, but also depersonalization of other species. Revisiting key psychoanalytic concepts and drawing on Winnicott, Bollas and Lear, LaMothe sheds new light on notions of subjectivity, psychosocial development, trauma, transference, resistance, therapy, and analytic love and hope. Relying the philosophy of Giogio Agamben and Indigenous philosophies, this book aims to cross the divide by reimagining psychoanalytic developmental theory and concepts.Reimagining Psychoanalytic Theory in the Climate Polycrisis will be essential reading for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists in practice and in training.

An Introduction to Embodied Mind: Thinking Outside the Head offers readers a valuable gateway to understanding one of the most exciting ideas in philosophy and cognitive science: that minds are not confined to the brain but extend into the body and environment. Part One begins with familiar ideas about mind-body separation and gradually leads readers toward embodied perspectives, distinguishing between "weak" and "strong" versions of embodiment. Part Three explores how these theories make a difference in practice, with applications to free will, ethics, technology, and cultural life. Each chapter includes accessible overviews, exercises in "Otto's Workbook" that encourage active reflection, and "Sidequests" and "The More You Know" boxes that invite readers to dig deeper. Examples are drawn from popular culture, psychology, and everyday experience, making the material approachable for students and general readers alike. With its blend of rigorous philosophy, practical exercises, and lively examples-as well as a helpful glossary-An Introduction to Embodied Mind: Thinking Outside the Head provides an engaging exploration of embodiment for anyone curious about how minds really work.
