21世紀におけるインドの企業、経済開発、仕事のジレンマ
D'Costa, Anthony P.,
Indian Business, Economic Development, and the Jobs Dilemma in the Twenty-first Century. 240 pp. 2026:8 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <766-198>
ISBN 978-0-19-894837-7 hard ¥27,007.- (税込) GB£ 88.00
This book examines the relationship between Indian business and economic development. The relationship, mediated by the state, is explored through the lens of business sectors to identify how they contribute to the different facets of economic development such as growth, exports, economic diversification, technology, and especially employment. Written in an accessible way, it surveys a range of industries and business sectors as part of India's quest for economic development as a late industrializer. Most of these business sectors generate development in some form, including some newer sectors such as e-commerce, digitalization, and green energy. However, critical as they might be for the foundation of a vibrant, modern economy, they are shown to be inadequate to make a dent in India's massive surplus labour. The paradox is that India's economy recently has been growing rapidly but has been unable to create enough decent jobs. Every year approximately 16 million new jobs must be created to absorb just the new workers that enter the labour force. Roughly 90% of employment is currently in precarious, low-wage or self-employment jobs in the informal sector that receive practically no social protection. This grim reality is a complex outcome of a structural stalemate that has resulted from the coexistence of low-productivity agriculture, premature deindustrialization, and a vast, persistent informal sector. This three-legged structural deadlock is attributed to India's late capitalist experience, or "compressed capitalism," which is a product of institutional legacies, policy choices, and external conditions. In the context of a massive workforce looking for jobs in an impoverished economy with a dysfunctional state-business nexus, creating such a large number of decent jobs is a herculean task. Today, the changing external environment with new technologies and artificial intelligence, competition from China and other parts of Asia, and unanticipated American tariff threats and visa restrictions for high-value service providers have further compounded India's jobs dilemma in the twenty-first century. Tackling the employment challenge will require a fundamental rethinking of strategies to boost the domestic market with demand-side policies while smartly adjusting to the uncertainties of the international economic and political environment.

Women in Turbulent Times: Crises, Transitions and Challenges for Gender Equality. (Routledge IAFFE Advances in Feminist Economics) 376 pp. 2026:5 (Routledge, UK) <765-196>
ISBN 978-1-032-86585-0 hard ¥47,569.- (税込) GB£ 155.00

The last two decades have been marked by economic and social turmoil - from the global financial crash and the austerity turn to the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by cost-of-living crises, geopolitical conflicts and heightened political divisions. This succession of crises has destabilised economic and political systems and risks undermining the hard-won, albeit slow, progress towards gender equality in contemporary societies. At the same time, the way we live and work is being challenged by rapidly developing AI and digital technologies, the imperative to accelerate the transition to net zero emissions, and unresolved pressures to transform care systems to support women's sustained participation in waged work. Against this backdrop, this volume offers a long-term perspective on turbulence, grounded on comparative and country evidence from Europe, the USA, Australia, and the Global South. The chapters trace how acute shocks, chronic crises and systemic transformations reverberate through labour markets, households and state policies, reshaping gender inequalities and vulnerabilities and their intersections. The concluding discussion argues that turmoil is evolving into a polycrisis -an entanglement of economic, social, and ecological disruptions- while exposing a critical but neglected dimension of turbulence: the crisis of social reproduction and women's pivotal role in managing the tensions between production and the social reproduction spheres. By introducing a gender perspective into the polycrisis debate, this volume speaks to scholars in socioeconomics and gender studies; policy experts and advisors on gender equality; and activists, educators and the general public seeking to understand and address the challenges to gender equality in turbulent times.

Upskilling the Chinese Workforce?: An Institutional Dilemma in China's Vocational Education System. 139 pp. 2026:3 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <764-344>
ISBN 978-981-9526-55-0 hard ¥29,036.- (税込) EUR 109.99
This book examines the Chinese vocational education system-an arena of growing significance in China's economic transformation. Over the past few decades, the central government has moved to decentralize a traditionally school-based skill development system, embracing a more market-oriented model that incorporates substantial employer involvement. This shift has produced a highly decentralized system centered on targeted training partnerships between schools and firms. These collaborations, further institutionalized by a series of reforms associated with the Made in China 2025 initiative, have helped alleviate skilled labor shortages and sustain the competitiveness of China's industrial sector globally. Yet, this book argues that neither a centralized, school-led model nor a decentralized, employer-driven approach has established the ideal institutional foundations necessary for sustainable workforce upskilling. This provocative study explores the future of skills development in China and identifies critical reforms needed to build a labor force capable of sustaining the country's economic trajectory in the decades ahead.

Gender Dynamics of Long-Term Trends in Urban Labour Market of India. (Sustainable Development Goals Series) 174 pp. 2026:3 (Springer, GW) <764-349>
ISBN 978-981-9560-19-6 hard ¥31,676.- (税込) EUR 119.99
This book examines the long-term dynamics of urban labour market behaviour of women and men over three and a half decades, spanning the period from 1987-88 to 2023-24. It provides a detailed understanding of the topic by incorporating data and information that cover both the supply and demand sides of the labour market. The book distinguishes itself from similar studies by adopting a life-cycle approach for women so as to enable a holistic coverage of various dimensions that hamper or facilitate their economic participation at every stage of life. It examines the gender differences in labour market behaviour and outcomes of young graduate women, married working age women, as well as elderly women. It also undertakes a time-use analysis for understanding the impact of education on gender differences in the distribution of unpaid domestic responsibilities among adolescent girls and boys. Likewise, among the married women fully engaged in household work, the book explores the potential for their integration into the labour force if employment opportunities are accessible at their household. Combining quantitative analysis of secondary datasets with qualitative analysis of primary survey interviews, this study provides an evidence-based depiction of gendered labour market realities and the policy approach to address them. The qualitative approach uses narrative-building to capture the lived experiences of women and men employed in the public transport and sanitation sectors. This book will serve as an important resource for understanding of female labour market by researchers, scholars, policymakers, practitioners, NGOs, and students of gender and labour studies.

Fair Skilled Mobility: A Manifesto. (Routledge Studies in Development, Mobilities and Migration) 220 pp. 2026:5 (Routledge, UK) <763-261>
ISBN 978-1-041-09371-8 hard ¥44,500.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book sets out a new approach to the global flow of skilled migration, one based on ethical, fair, balanced and sustainable frameworks. Instead of focusing on human capital loss and 'brain drain', the book argues that we should look towards mutually beneficial outcomes. In a world where demographic shifts, rapid technological advancements connected to automation and AI-enhancement, and evolving economic landscapes are reshaping labour markets, this book serves as a guide for 'doing' skilled migration, highlighting shared development, social inclusion, and economic resilience opportunities. Seeking to provoke and inspire policy makers, researchers, and practitioners, the book sets out a manifesto for transparent, fair and sustainable migration skill infrastructure, based on 13 theses. Based on extensive original data from across the Link4Skills consortium and its sister projects GS4S and Skills4Justice across at least 15 countries of origin and 15 countries of destinations, the book addresses critical issues such as the depletion of labour markets in origin countries and the challenges of skill recognition and labour market integration and retention in destination countries. This important new book will be a breath of fresh air for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers looking for possible solutions to global migration skill flow challenges.

Governing Solidarity in European Labour Markets: Atypical Employment and Minimum Wage Reform in Spain and Portugal. (Routledge Studies in Labour Economics) 200 pp. 2026:3 (Routledge, UK) <763-263>
ISBN 978-1-032-85795-4 hard ¥47,569.- (税込) GB£ 155.00 *
Across Western Europe, the rise of atypical employment has deepened insider-outsider divides. This book asks why two structurally similar countries - Portugal and Spain - pursued different routes to reduce labour market segmentation following the conclusion of the sovereign debt crisis. It argues that the composition of the governing social bloc drives the orientation of reform, while the choice of decision-making arena (parliamentary law-making versus tripartite social concertation) and the EU's evolving social governance shape the breadth and depth of reform.Building on the distinction between competitive and inclusive solidarity, the book compares four domains: employment protection and collective bargaining; statutory minimum wages; regulation of ride-hailing platforms in passenger transport; and the regularisation of precarious public sector work. The analysis covers Portugal's progressive cycle (2015-2021) and Spain's coalition years (2019-2025), drawing on elite interviews, content analysis of parliamentary debates and media coverage, and official documents. The findings reveal a targeted, outsider-focused strategy in Portugal and a more universal re-regulation in Spain.Governing Solidarity offers a fresh framework and rich evidence for scholars of political economy and industrial relations, as well as advanced students and policymakers confronting labour market segmentation. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

The Future of Work in Developing Countries. (Initiative for Policy Dialogue at Columbia: Challenges in Development and Globalization) 456 pp. 2026:3 (Columbia U. Pr., US) <763-208>
ISBN 978-0-231-22033-0 hard ¥16,747.- (税込) US$ 75.00 *
One of the most pressing issues in development today is the employment challenge in low- and middle-income countries. As more young people enter the labor force-and as structural transformation unfolds amid deindustrialization, technological disruption, and global competition-the question of how to create sufficient decent jobs has become central to the economic future of the Global South. Although this is a shared challenge across developing regions, it is particularly acute in Africa, where rapid demographic change and urbanization are colliding with limited industrial expansion.Bringing together leading international scholars, The Future of Work in Developing Countries examines the employment problem from multiple perspectives. Early chapters develop conceptual frameworks around corporations and the global hierarchy of production. Subsequent contributions investigate the dynamics of structural transformation, the role of firms in linking production and labor to surplus, and the design of industrial and technology policies. Later chapters turn to detailed case studies-especially from Africa-that illustrate the possibilities and limits of different growth paths, and comparative insights from Asia and Latin America provide further perspective.By combining rigorous theoretical analysis with grounded empirical research, this book demonstrates that employment creation is not an automatic byproduct of growth but a political and institutional project. It offers fresh insights for scholars of development, political economy, and economic history, as well as for policy makers seeking strategies to promote inclusive transformation in Africa and beyond.

The Economics of Migration of Highly Skilled Workers from Tuerkiye: The New Age of Colonialism. 179 pp. 2026:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <762-201>
ISBN 978-3-032-10605-6 hard ¥29,036.- (税込) EUR 109.99
This book examines the migration of highly skilled labour from developing countries to developed ones and assesses the economics costs associated with this. By highlighting the impact of migration on developing countries, it outlines the development challenges created by the loss of highly skilled workers, especially the loss of specialised knowledge. With a particular focus on the movement of labour from Tuerkiye to the rest of the world, the inability of Tuerkiye to grow its own IT and engineering industries is discussed, alongside attempts to retain highly skilled labour. This book offers a new perspective on global migration and the hidden economic costs associated with it. It will be relevant to students, researchers, and policymakers interested in labour and development economics.

Making Work Pay in Mature Welfare States: The Politics of In-Work Benefits in France and the United Kingdom. (Work and Welfare in Europe) 338 pp. 2026:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <762-203>
ISBN 978-3-032-11472-3 hard ¥36,956.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book provides a fresh narrative of policy reforms to support low-income workers in France and the United Kingdom in recent decades. It tackles the puzzle of why two institutionally-distinct welfare states came to make use of similar instruments - including subsidising wages via in-work benefits - to 'make work pay' and reduce in-work poverty. Drawing on primary interviews and documents, the account argues that governmental decisions were decisively influenced by prevailing ideas among political and policy elites, rather than the concrete demands of voters and interest groups. It also charts how wider developments in each state's social security and labour market system led to a process of partial welfare state convergence. The findings contribute to contemporary debates regarding welfare state politics, ideational power, and democratic representation. The volume will be of interest students and researchers in the fields of social and public policy, political science, political economy, sociology, and cognate disciplines.

Youth, Masculinity and the Labour Market: Precarious Transitions in Post-Industrial Britain. (Youth, Young Adulthood and Society) 200 pp. 2026:2 (Routledge, UK) <761-351>
ISBN 978-1-032-88229-1 hard ¥47,569.- (税込) GB£ 155.00 *
This book examines young men's precarious education-to-employment transitions as they navigate educational, occupational and emotional challenges in the shadow of deindustrialisation and austerity.Using a mixed-methods approach, Guelgecer draws on survey and interview data to explore young men's perceptions and experiences of employment, unemployment, education and training in two post-industrial British cities. The book analyses how structural inequalities - fragmented labour markets, biased education systems and punitive welfare regimes - shape uncertain futures. With education emerging as a risky 'gamble,' apprenticeships desired but underfunded and unemployment often experienced as both stigma and moral injury, the study foregrounds the emotional costs of precarity - shame, anxiety and resilience - and reveals a fractured yet enduring agency among young men facing economic abandonment and processes of cultural misrecognition in post-industrial contexts. An interplay of material and affective precarity in youth education-to-employment transitions, this book will appeal to scholars and students of sociology, social policy, youth studies, labour market studies and masculinities. It will also be of value to professionals engaged with UK welfare, skills and labour market policy.

Jobless Growth and the New Great Transformation: A Data Driven Analysis. 300 pp. 2026:6 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <761-239>
ISBN 978-1-009-70009-2 hard ¥30,690.- (税込) GB£ 100.00
Technological change and innovation have long fueled economic growth and employment. Yet, in recent decades, productivity gains have increasingly failed to translate into more jobs and higher wages. Jobless Growth and the New Great Transformation investigates this apparent paradox, by examining the theoretical and empirical evidence about the relationship between innovation and structural change. It combines rigorous and cutting-edge data analysis with EU case studies to reveal how recent technological breakthroughs, far from driving shared prosperity, have slowed growth, widened spatial divides and fueled societal polarization, partly due to excessive confidence in market deregulation. Drawing on data-driven analyses, the book explains why impacts of innovation vary so widely between regions and how history, institutions, and policy-not just market forces-determine who benefits from technological advances and who is left behind.

ISBN 978-1-041-12215-9 hard ¥47,569.- (税込) GB£ 155.00 *
This book presents a comprehensive examination of employee share ownership, profit sharing, and gain sharing practices in contemporary business environments. Drawing from rigorous academic research presented at the prestigious Oxford University-Rutgers University Conference on Shares, it offers valuable insights into how these ownership structures function across different organizational contexts. The collection analyzes both the contextual factors that influence share plans and their measurable impacts on companies and individuals. The volume is organized into two main sections. The first explores the financial, corporate cultural, and social contexts that shape employee ownership programs, including groundbreaking research on earnings management in French companies, workplace spillover theory, financial structures in Spanish worker cooperatives, and critical success factors for fostering ownership culture. The second section provides evidence-based analysis of outcomes and impacts, examining whether these organizational forms deliver concrete benefits for firms and workers.Through careful examination of international case studies and empirical data, the book demonstrates that while employee ownership and profit sharing conceptually align individual rewards with organizational performance, their success depends on appropriate human resource management practices and supportive corporate cultures. The research highlights how these models can address wage stagnation by allowing workers to access returns on capital. This book is essential reading for students, researchers and scholars in management studies, organizational behavior, and labor economics, as well as corporate executives, HR professionals, and policymakers interested in alternative ownership structures. The chapters in this book were originally published in International Review of Applied Economics.

Raising the Floor: Federalism and the Politics of US Minimum Wage Policy. 256 pp. 2026:3 (U. Chicago Pr., US) <759-289>
ISBN 978-0-226-84656-9 hard ¥25,679.- (税込) US$ 115.00
ISBN 978-0-226-84657-6 paper ¥7,256.- (税込) US$ 32.50
A rich history of the development of American minimum wage policy with lessons for today. Despite broad popular support for robust minimum wage policy, the federal minimum wage is now worth less-in real, inflation-adjusted terms-than at any time since 1949. While some state and local governments have stepped in to fill this void, others have declined to set any minimum wage standard at all. Traversing more than 100 years of history, Raising the Floor examines how interest groups have navigated the highly decentralized American political system to shape the development of federal, state, and local minimum wage laws. In her analysis, Shanna Rose highlights the importance of American federalism. She argues that because federalism creates multiple arenas for policy change, interest groups have sought out the sites most conducive to their goals, shifting their lobbying efforts as new obstacles and opportunities emerge. Federalism has facilitated minimum wage policymaking by fostering policy experimentation, learning, and diffusion across states and by allowing state and local governments to overcome gridlock and status-quo biases at the national level. Yet, federalism has also been an instrument for containment, enabling those opposed to minimum wage increases to litigate and preempt local-level laws. With rich historical chapters that illuminate different phases in the development of today's patchwork of wage standards, Raising the Floor is a deep examination of the past, present, and future of American minimum wage law.

Cheap Labour Regime in Platform Capitalism: How Flexible Accumulation Fuels the Super-Exploitation of Gig Workers. 128 pp. 2025:10 (Springer, GW) <758-254>
ISBN 978-981-9518-40-1 hard ¥29,036.- (税込) EUR 109.99
This book offers a groundbreaking exploration of platform-based labor in the Global South, with Indonesia as its primary case study. Moving beyond familiar accounts of precarious work, this book addresses a central paradox: Why do millions continue to aspire to become platform workers, despite low pay, poor protections, and grueling conditions? Drawing on Michael Burawoy's labor regime theory, the author examines how labor is governed and exploited under platform capitalism. Through a rigorous mixed-methods research design the book identifies five structural pillars of the "cheap labor regime": the persistent oversupply of labor, hyper-competition between platforms, neoliberal state complicity, labor processes engineered for maximum surplus extraction, and the erosion of workers' bargaining power. Indonesia, with an estimated 5 million platform workers, stands as one of the clearest examples of super-exploitation in the digital economy. This book dissects the mechanisms that normalize such conditions, exposing how labor is commodified and discipline enforced not only through economic necessity but also through the architecture of the platforms themselves. This book is essential reading for scholars, students, policymakers, labor organizers, and readers interested in critical perspectives on the future of work. It delivers fresh insights into how digital capitalism shapes labor relations, particularly in the Global South-offering a powerful framework for understanding resistance, inequality, super-exploitation and the enduring allure of platform work.

Unpaid: The Past, Present and Future of Wage Theft. 256 pp. 2026:5 (Verso, UK) <757-378>
ISBN 978-1-80429-566-3 paper ¥5,214.- (税込) GB£ 16.99
An extra 15 minutes work here, another 20 minutes there: wage theft has been described as a silent epidemic blighting the global workforce. And it's on the rise. In the UK and US alone millions of workers put in billions of unpaid hours amounting to tens of billions in wage theft. The problem pervades throughout the world, in every sector of every country, though it is often worse in low and middle-income countries. But what if wage theft, rather than being a modern bug, is a feature of capitalism itself? In this original conceptual and empirical work, political economist Matthew Cole uncovers the long history of wage theft, its contemporary machinations and how to overcome it. There are as many ways to steal wages as there are to pay them. But rather than attribute these practices to the actions of a few nefarious employers, Cole shows how wage theft is baked into the very working of the economy. But it doesn't have to be this way. The modern economy has a history, and we can change it. Unpaid explains why wage theft occurs, how employers get away with it, and what we can do to fight back.

Technology, Globalisation and Migration: Interconnected Challenges for Inequality and Skills. 198 pp. 2025:12 (E. Elgar, UK) <757-379>
ISBN 978-1-0353-7364-2 hard ¥29,155.- (税込) GB£ 95.00 *
This timely book examines three impactful changes to the labour market in recent decades: the rapid automation of production processes, surging international trade, and greater cross-border mobility and migration of workers. Expert authors assess how workers have benefited and suffered from these shifts and provide policymakers with recommendations on how to reduce inequality while securing economic benefits.Contributors analyse individual transformations and their interaction with the broader sociopolitical landscape, incorporating both macroeconomic and microeconomic perspectives. They use an interdisciplinary approach to explore the consequences of technological advancements on labour markets, such as automation, digital platforms and artificial intelligence. Chapters also address rising inequality and the divide between skilled and unskilled labour, and the uneven impacts of globalisation that prevent the diversification of economies. Ultimately, the book outlines the need for innovation and a restructuring of systems to ensure a resilient future where talent and skills are not squandered, and potential challenges can be successfully overcome.Technology, Globalisation and Migration is a vital read for scholars and students of economics and finance, innovation and technology, development studies, and sociology. Policymakers and practitioners working in labour market regulation will also benefit from its practical and theoretical insights.

Over the past four decades, South Korea has undergone a remarkable process of economic development, leading to its current status as a renowned centre of innovation and cultural influence. Nevertheless, beneath this outward appearance, a pervasive and profoundly entrenched form of gender inequality pervades the labour market. This is evidenced by the country's continuous ranking at the bottom of the glass ceiling index, a publication of The Economist. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of gender inequality in the Korean labour market, with a particular emphasis on the cultural, political and social dimensions of the issue.

Why is there a gender disparity in economics? How does this impact economic policy? What does this mean for society? This contributed volume explores the underrepresentation of women in the field of economics. Offering unique empirical approaches into gender imbalance in a profession, this book documents the leaky pipeline that women face in the field of economics. Contributors draw upon quantitative and qualitative data, exploring unique challenges and opportunities women economists encounter in their personal and professional lives. Chapters highlight issues of discrimination and implicit bias, such as silencing, mansplaining, and the presumption of incompetence. These sections bring to life the experiences of female students and faculty, examining teaching, hiring, colleague interactions, and tenure and promotion processes. The authors propose mechanisms to increase diversity and improve the experiences of all faculty members. Missing Voices in Economics explores whether historical sexist structures are slowing progress in economic research and, as a result, human development. Readers will walk away from the book ready to continue this conversation and support gender equity in economics.

Human Capital for the Knowledge Economy: Upskill Journeys in Advanced Capitalist Democracies. 192 pp. 2026:2 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <755-234>
ISBN 978-0-19-896133-8 hard ¥25,779.- (税込) GB£ 84.00 *
Human Capital for the Knowledge Economy offers a compelling investigation into how advanced capitalist democracies have reshaped higher education to meet the demands of their national knowledge economies. As non-routine cognitive tasks become increasingly crucial in labour markets transformed by technological change, countries have expanded higher education since the mid-1990s. Yet, as this book reveals, national approaches to creating high-level skills diverge sharply, shaped by deep institutional and political differences. This study sets out to explain those differences. At its core is a novel analytical framework that links two key dimensions: the sectoral specialisation of national economies-whether oriented toward advanced manufacturing or high-end services-and the institutional design of higher education systems, including modes of financing and patterns of differentiation. From this, the book identifies four ideal-typical state-led strategies-allocation, modification, facilitation, and information-to explain how different countries align higher education with labour market demands. Drawing on cross-national quantitative data and detailed case studies of Germany, South Korea, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, Human Capital for the Knowledge Economy explores how policy choices and institutional legacies shape countries' distinct 'upskill journeys'. The book also speaks to urgent contemporary policy debates. As governments confront the twin pressures of sustaining economic competitiveness and achieving broader societal goals-such as those entailed by the green transition-higher education becomes both more central and more politically contested.

Basic Income, Work Incentives and Job Search Behaviour: Bridging Theory and Practice in European Contexts. (Exploring the Basic Income Guarantee) 198 pp. 2025:10 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <754-252>
ISBN 978-3-031-99196-7 hard ¥10,556.- (税込) EUR 39.99
This book analyzes existing welfare regimes across Europe, offering an exploration into how basic income principles might influence job search behaviour. Drawing on time-use data and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis, it challenges assumptions about work incentives and demonstrates that institutional contexts significantly mediate welfare effects. The analysis develops an innovative "ideal type" framework that measures how existing systems approximate basic income principles, unconditionality, universalism, and non-withdrawal of benefits. Chapters explore the complex relationships between welfare design and job search intensity, with a special focus on providing evidence as to whether conditionality increases job search or if certain configurations of accessibility and high participation tax rates decrease it. Comparing ten European countries and counterfactual examination of Finland and the UK, the book provides empirical grounding for debates often based on theoretical assumptions. The resulting text provides insights for designing context-appropriate strategies for basic income implementation that enhance income security while preserving individual autonomy.

This book investigates youth employment programmes across nine African countries, providing important insights into the world's youngest continent by population, in which 60% of people are aged under 25.By 2050, the labour force in sub-Saharan Africa is expected to be almost double the size of the labour force in high-income countries, representing a massive shift in the world's working population and providing a significant challenge for job creation. In this book, contributors bring together insights from more than 500 in-depth interviews and 1,500 focus group participants to consider whether youth employment programmes are effectively reaching vulnerable groups. This book tackles the problem of political clientelism in the allocation of benefits and considers the level of coordination that is taking place across programmes and political institutions.Combining rich empirical findings with data about labour market outcomes and institutions, this book will be an important read for researchers wishing to understand the political economy of youth employment policy in Africa.

Wage Inequality from Agricultural Modernization: A Theoretical Evaluation. 252 pp. 2025:6 (Springer, GW) <751-274>
ISBN 978-981-9668-50-2 hard ¥42,236.- (税込) EUR 159.99
This book integrates the agricultural producer service sector into a three-sector general equilibrium framework to examine the modernization of small-scale agriculture in developing economies. By incorporating agricultural transformation and rural-urban migration dynamics, it presents a theoretical analysis of the determinants of wage inequality between skilled and unskilled labor from multiple perspectives. Over the past few decades, industrialization and urbanization have progressed in parallel, driving the modernization of the agricultural sector. Traditional development economics often conceptualizes agricultural modernization within the context of large-scale operations, assuming that traditional agriculture can directly adopt modern non-agricultural intermediate inputs after some transformations. However, small-scale agriculture-the dominant form in developing countries-follows a distinct modernization path. This divergence manifests in two key ways. First, labor substitution and migration. The introduction of modern intermediate non-agricultural inputs tends to displace agricultural labor, accelerating rural-urban migration. Second, the role of the agricultural producer service sector: Due to the prevalence of small-scale operations, an intermediary sector-the agricultural producer service sector-emerges to facilitate the modernization process. These differences significantly influence intersectoral labor allocation and wage inequality. Given that agricultural modernization, policy shifts, and socioeconomic changes concurrently affect labor allocation, it is crucial to analyze how these exogenous factors shape wage disparities in the presence of agricultural transformation. To model this process, the book establishes a two-layer vertical production structure: non-agricultural goods are partially utilized by the agricultural producer service sector, which then produces intermediate inputs that substitute for agricultural labor. The study focuses on three major factors that profoundly impact rural labor migration and wage inequality: pro-rural policies(mitigation labor market distortion, raising rural public infrastructure, increased agricultural subsidies), FDI and internal remittances, and technological progress (green technological progress and skill-biased technical change). The findings offer novel insights into wage inequality in developing economies and provide a theoretical foundation for formulating development policies.

Employee Ownership and Profit Sharing: Models, Incidence, and Sectors. 325 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <750-220>
ISBN 978-1-041-12210-4 hard ¥47,569.- (税込) GB£ 155.00 *
This book explores a quiet revolution reshaping global capitalism: the rise of employee ownership, worker cooperatives, and profit-sharing enterprises. With 17% of US adult workers now holding equity in their companies, a new Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) being established daily in the UK, a mature sector thriving in France, extensive tax incentives in Canada, the continued development of several mature worker cooperative sectors worldwide such as Mondragon, and interest in many other nations, shared ownership is no longer a fringe idea.Authored by leading researchers, this volume presents 16 studies on how equity and profit shares for workers operate-exploring their impact on employees' lives, firm performance, local communities, the racial wealth gap, and the determinants that drive success or failure in such enterprises. This volume is one of the first to examine the emergence of businesses that share financial results with workers as a global phenomenon; it positions this model as a significant development in postindustrial capitalism. With a strong grounding in theory, and a coherent conceptual framework to explain observed behaviors and responses of workers, managers, and firms, this volume offers evidence-based insights that should influence policy in countries around the world. This book will be essential reading for scholars and students in economics, sociology, business, public policy, labor studies, and organizational theory, as well as for policymakers, practitioners, and advocates interested in building more equitable and resilient economies. The chapters in this book were first published in the International Review of Applied Economics.

ISBN 978-1-041-09817-1 hard ¥47,569.- (税込) GB£ 155.00 *
Grounded in "The Race Between Education and Technology," this book uses multisource data to analyse the evolving labour market for college graduates, interpreting how the relationship between humans and automation shifts from competition to coexistence, which is reshaping skill demand, education policy, and labour market in China and abroad. In examining the competition between humans and automation, the authors analyse how automation is pushing graduates out of informal employment, reshaping their career paths, and changing labour market structures. They also explore the impact of automation on skill demand, distinguishing between general and specific skills and highlighting how technological advancements are driving the evolving requirements of the labour market. The discussion then moves from competition to coexistence between humans and automation, highlighting the crucial role of education policy in managing human-automation substitution. The authors contend that rather than simply displacing human workers, automation can be integrated into the workforce in a way that promotes coexistence and even synergy between human skills and technological innovation. This book advances the traditional understanding of the relationship between technology, labour market, and education. It will appeal to scholars and students who are interested in the economics of education and labour economics.

ISBN 978-1-0353-5887-8 hard ¥44,500.- (税込) GB£ 145.00 *
This book presents a comprehensive analysis of the effects of minimum wages. Michael Reich's cutting-edge research findings challenge traditional approaches to the topic, exploring the effects of minimum wage policies across different sectors, groups and demographics.Reich examines the effects of minimum wages on pay and employment among the two groups most affected by the policies - restaurant workers and teens - as well as investigating their impact on the lowest-wage areas of the US. He outlines how minimum wages influence parental labor supply, racial inequality, the health of low wage workers and government spending on food stamps and Medicaid. The book further reflects on the extension of pay standards to gig drivers, who are not typically covered by minimum wage laws as independent contractors. It concludes by demonstrating how minimum wages can be absorbed by increasing the supply of workers to low-wage employers, reducing the costs of recruiting and retaining workers and introducing modest price increases, rather than reducing employment. The Unexpected Economics of Minimum Wages is a crucial resource for students, scholars and practitioners of labor economics. Thorough and detailed, it is also key for policymakers and advocates who are working to raise low pay and reduce inequality.

Authors Stephen Sweet and Peter Meiksins use an international comparative perspective, revealing the historical transformations of work and identifying the profound effects that these changes have had on lives, jobs, and life chances. This text supports the reader's understanding of the origins of current problems confronting working people in the new economy, and contributes to a much-needed dialogue about the strategies for liberating workers from poverty, drudgery, discrimination, stress, and exploitation.

Creating productive jobs for growing a labor force is both one of the world's greatest challenges as well as one of its greatest economic opportunities, and one of the most consequential global megatrends. Nowhere is the job creation challenge more acute than for young people in Africa. In response to this challenge and to also address Africa's structural economic transformation, the Africa Growth Initiative at Brookings has undertaken research on the prospects for large-scale job creation through the development of 'industries without smokestacks' including tourism, agro-processing, horticulture, and services that has revealed a promising path forward. This book is the first to document the potential for non-traditional industries to address the formal sector job creation that is critical for Africa to simultaneously harness its demographic dividend and achieve structural transformation. In the face of premature deindustrialization, many economists have voiced pessimism about Africa's ability to replicate past economic development models. The book also documents the potential of an alternative economic development model for Africa based on industries without smokestacks. Finally, the book suggests practical policy solutions to realize the potential of these industries
