ISBN 978-1-83549-975-7 hard ¥33,699.- (税込) US$ 148.00
In the digital age, Big Data offers an unparalleled lens into the intricacies of human behavior. Data sourced from job boards, social media platforms, or news websites allows researchers to answer questions that could not be answered with conventional data sources. Labor markets are no exception here: every day, millions of workers and firms interact, and big data allows us to better understand the complex dynamics arising from worker-firm interactions. This volume showcases new, original research using Big Data to gain fresh insights into how labor markets work. The volume is compiled by Solomon Polachek, a pioneer in gender-related labor market research, and Benjamin Elsner, an expert on causal inference and the economics of migration. Topics include labor force transition dynamics, the labor demand side of involuntary part-time employment, the insights gained from wages in online job postings regarding wage growth, the role of online vacancies in labor market performance, the demand for personality traits, and an analysis of job descriptions from university job boards. All chapters use a combination of innovative data sources and machine learning methods to enhance our understanding of how labor markets work.

China's Labor Market in the Transition: The Evolution From Segmentation to Integration. 238 pp. 2024:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <730-212>
ISBN 978-981-9991-59-4 hard ¥29,696.- (税込) EUR 119.99
This book explores the dynamics of the Chinese labor market, the largest in the world. The sheer scale of rural laborers living in cities is the ultimate engine driving the fastest urbanization the world has ever seen. Today, the country faces a series of new challenges as it tries to address problems of unemployment and under-employment. These include population ageing, automation, the increasing use of AI on the factory floor and other workplaces and Chinese manufacturers' move up the value chain. The book presents an empirically rich and analytically rigorous account of how these challenges might be met. It will be of interest to labor economists, scholars of Chinese manufacturing, and researchers of the Chinese economy.

Cigno, Alessandro / Rosati, Furio C.,
The Economics of Child Labour: Education, Fertility, and Infant Mortality in Developing Countries. 2nd ed. 288 pp. 2024:12 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <729-259>
ISBN 978-0-19-890300-0 paper ¥8,877.- (税込) GB£ 30.00
Children throughout the world are engaged in a variety of activities classifiable as work. These range from relatively harmless, even laudable, activities like helping parents in the home, to morally or physically dangerous ones. Many forms of child labour have valuable learning-by-doing elements, but they all conflict with formal education. If the family is credit constrained, child labour relaxes the liquidity constraint and may be necessary to avoid starvation. Statistically and theoretically, child labour is associated with high fertility, high infant mortality, and low productivity. By contrast, education is associated with low fertility, low infant mortality, and high productivity. Suitable as an advanced development economics or development microeconomics textbook, the book lays out the theory as it now stands and examines the available evidence within an integrated framework. This second edition emphasizes the interplay between child labour, education, fertility, and mortality. The empirical aspects have been expanded to include new evidence available since the previous edition and an assessment of the impact of policy and programs. There are new chapters on the emergence and implications of family rules and social norms, and on policy optimization, and an expanded chapter on international trade examines the effects of foreign direct investment.

Gender Inequality in the Global Labor Market: A Feminist Economics Approach. (Routledge Studies in Gender and Economics) 270 pp. 2024:10 (Routledge, UK) <729-327>
ISBN 978-1-03-256881-2 hard ¥39,946.- (税込) GB£ 135.00
This book examines gender inequality from the perspective of Feminist Economics, with empirical application, across different countries such as Turkey, United States, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica and territories within Europe. It centers on topics such as labor participation, occupational segregation, feminization of poverty and migration, wage differentials, changes in and the quality of employment, equity index and gender bias in fiscal policies. It encompasses both developed and developing countries and shows that the gender gap has been narrowing over time, although not completely, mainly due to the sparse implementation of programs and public policies with a feminist economic approach, which help to make gender dimensions in the economy visible and highlight the implications this has on women's lives. The book also examines the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on inequality on the working lives of men and women. This volume will be an important asset in teaching forums on the most recent advances in economic science across a number of different theories, approaches and research hypotheses that explain the study of gender inequality. It also presents different empirical studies, using multiple methodologies and databases, applied to specific problems in multiple countries to identify the advances, opportunities and changes that have occurred in gender inequality from a feminist economic perspective. The book offers relevant, novel, and original scientific data and makes public policy proposals to encourage the participation of women in the labor market. Consequently, it will also be of interest to policymakers concerned with global trends in the labor market.

Technological Change and Labor Markets: Productivity, Job Polarization, and Inequality. (Routledge Studies in Labour Economics) 264 pp. 2024:10 (Routledge, UK) <729-328>
ISBN 978-1-03-248624-6 hard ¥39,946.- (税込) GB£ 135.00
In developed countries like the US, Germany and the UK it has been observed that workers who perform non-routine activities, either cognitive or manual, have benefited in terms of employment and income, while those performing routinary tasks have seen their job prospects and wages decline. This has led to a polarization of the labor markets and to a decrease in certain measures of inequality. This phenomenon has been attributed to task-biased technological change (TBTC), which differs from the skilled biased technological change in the fact that not only highly skilled workers have benefited from technology advancement. This book presents evidence of how digitalization and task-biased technological change are affecting the labor markets of different regions of the world and examines the factors that cause this inequality among nations. It examines recent issues around the effect of task-biased technological change on labor markets and the economy in general, with a comparison of different countries in Central and Eastern Europe, North America, and Latin America, as well as in other regions of the world. The incorporation of the abovementioned regions presents relevant particularities for the subject matter addressed in the book. The book also considers questions such as how labor market effects differ by gender and what the impact of digital skills on employment, inequalities and public policies might be. In so doing, it identifies the advances, opportunities, and changes that have taken place, while also making public policy proposals. The main market for the book is the global community of graduate students and researchers in the field of economics and, specifically, in the study of labor markets.

Business Resilience and Market Adaptability: Pandemic Effects and Strategies for Recovery. (The Political Economy of the Middle East) 294 pp. 2024 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <728-247>
ISBN 978-981-9729-61-6 hard ¥39,596.- (税込) EUR 159.99
This book assesses the resilience of enterprises and their abilities to adapt to changing circumstances and new business environments in the time of crises. Entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprises, and large corporations proved to be capable of utilizing innovation and technology to survive the economic and financial consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many enterprises have succeeded in turning the pandemic crisis into viable business opportunities, dominating local and regional markets, and putting them at the heart of technological transformation. The book also emphasizes the role of innovation, digitalization, and technology in developing new business models and innovative strategies that contributed to enhancing business resilience and market adaptability during the pandemic. The implementation of the new business model and working methods has not only made companies more competitive, but it also ensured the sustainability of the flow of goods and services in the time of the crisis. The analysis is provided through a detailed examination of key sectors, including small and medium enterprises, logistics and supply chain, food security, and labor market. While acknowledging the unprecedented economic and financial consequences of the pandemic on enterprises and markets, this book stresses the importance of the lessons learned from this experience that are critical for supporting the business sector and strengthening market fundamentals to withstand similar crises in the future.

Pan-India Stories of Informal Workers During Covid-19 Pandemic: Crisis Narratives. 151 pp. 2024:5 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <726-336>
ISBN 978-981-9715-24-4 hard ¥9,896.- (税込) EUR 39.99
This book aims to delve into the application of feminist ethnography by engaging with the lived experiences of vulnerable workers, occupied by India's informal workforce, across its deeply stratified labour-market landscape. Set up and organized in a diverse spatial trajectory through identified case studies from across India, the book, in a post pandemic context, aims to study, critically reflect on the vulnerable state of India's workforce, capturing the daily emergencies, livelihood of marginalized communities. Case studies in the book feature the pandemic-crisis narratives of farmers, fisherfolk, factory workers, artisans, small scale entertainment providers, sanitation, and waste workers, to name a few.By understanding the intersectional dimensions of social structures like caste, gender, and class our case studies in the book also attempt to unpack the 'dualities' present in the contemporary understanding of India's labour market. Reflective discussions with field ethnographers through first-person narratives help documenting their own observations from different case studies, while focusing on interactions on how to work through power dynamics and varied positionalities across dynamic field sites marked with different spatial characteristics. The text is primarily aimed at students and peer scholars of development studies, or for those who interested in learning about the application of ethnographic methods to studying/understanding the governing dynamics of informality across India and South Asia.

Hartman, Harrison C.,
Bad Breaks in Real GDP and Employment: Exploring the Persistence of Aggregate Demand Shocks in the United States. 134 pp. 2024:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <726-282>
ISBN 978-3-031-57768-0 hard ¥9,896.- (税込) EUR 39.99
Why do policymakers allow economies to settle into a "new normal" after a bad break in the economy rather than try to return the economy to its previous trend? In this book, economist Harrison C. Hartman discusses some of the variables that impact a nation's ability to recover from negative aggregate demand shocks. Spanning total real GDP, per capita real GDP, and nonfarm payroll employment in the USA, the book emphasizes the role of aggregate demand shocks in causing the US economy to fail to return to trend. The resulting book challenges modern mainstream macroeconomic theories and highlights the complexities of post-recession recovery. The chapters provide econometric evidence both for and against the impact of aggregate demand on real GDP and employment levels in the long run. Hartman studies modern macroeconomic theories related to economic resilience and demand using (a) the velocity of money and the equation of exchange and (b) econometric analysis to dissect modern macroeconomic theories related to economic resilience and demand. The book provides methods to estimate and evaluate trends, and after simple methods for estimating trend and discussing associated results, the book turns attention to model selection, hypothesis testing and further results. This book also offers some possible areas for future work. A thought-provoking exploration of economic recovery or lack thereof, the book covers aggregate demand, employment, real GDP, and economic theories (classical, Keynesian, monetarist, neoclassical, new-Keynesian, and post-Keynesian perspectives). Bad Breaks in Real GDP and Employment is a timely and essential guide for economists navigating the complexities of past, present, and future macroeconomic landscapes. It explains the functionality of aggregate demand in the context of economic recession, offering insight into why some AD shocks feel permanent. This book provides econometric evidence supporting Keynesian and post-Keynesian perspectives on the potential importance of aggregate demand in determining real GDP and employment levels in the long run, particularly in cases when real GDP and employment fail to recover fully after recessions. This book is one of few contemporary works (a) explicitly noting the economic importance of money velocity and (b) focusing on econometric analysis that at least at times supports post-Keynesian perspectives.

Mitra, Arup (ed.),
Youth in Indian Labour Market: Issues, Challenges and Policies. (India Studies in Business and Economics) 290 pp. 2024:3 (Springer, GW) <724-193>
ISBN 978-981-9703-78-4 hard ¥39,596.- (税込) EUR 159.99
This book addresses labour market participation issues of youth in India, and follows an inter-disciplinary approach. It carries out both quantitative and qualitative assessments for an in-depth understanding of these issues. It collates a wide range of concerns both from supply and demand side, and instead of reflecting on the empirical questions only, the book reflects on various analytical questions as well. Some other challenges being discussed here are inadequacy of skill and compulsion to participate in the labour market, concentration in activities with excess supplies of labour, unrecognised work experience, lack of upward mobility, and working with information asymmetry. Caste and gender disadvantages are an instrumental part of the book. Problems of educated and uneducated youth are quite different and the book analyses them separately. Besides, it refers to a wide range of issues relating to occupational flexibility. It also discusses skill imparting institutions and themajor lacuna associated with their functioning. Social unrest and threats to the prospects of future growth in the absence of adequate youth employment are some of the economic and political issues which the book covers. Unraveling the threads of the concerns mentioned above, the book finally comes up with policy suggestions. It is a great resource for researchers, industry watchers, and policy makers who are interested in inclusive and sustainable growth.

War Refugees and the Labour Market: Crisis-Driven Mobility in the Polish-Ukrainian Borderland. (Routledge Studies in Labour Economics) 346 pp. 2024:8 (Routledge, UK) <723-218>
ISBN 978-1-03-274944-0 hard ¥38,467.- (税込) GB£ 130.00 *
This book addresses the complex socioeconomic situation in the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, in the context of the labour market, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It analyses and assesses the measures which influence the process of Ukrainian war refugees' adaptation to the Polish labour market, surveying the engagement of local actors, such as employers, labour market institutions and nongovernmental organisations. It examines the impact of the refugee crisis on this market, as well as mobilisation of various groups of actors in order to support this specific group of migrants in adapting to life in Poland. The authors argue that this phenomenon of the migration of war refugees confirms the thesis that political instability can be a factor in pushing people abroad as equally important as inequalities in prosperity. The book identifies the characteristic features of the stream of war refugees from Ukraine as a category of cross-border flows. Before the Russian attack, the influx of Ukrainians to Poland was due mainly to economic pressures, whereas, after the outbreak of war, Ukrainians' motivation to cross the border with Poland as well as the structure of this migration stream have radically changed. The book offers in-depth insight into the development of borderland regions, and especially the cross-border labour market as a specific element of the borderland economic ecosystem. It highlights the positive outcomes of the migration crisis, which will serve as examples of best practice for other regions in Europe. This book will be of interest to scholars, researchers and policymakers concerned with regional development, including contact regions, as well as cross-border flows, the labour market and migration.

ISBN 978-3-031-53137-8 hard ¥9,896.- (税込) EUR 39.99

The book connects original research on contemporary Chinese demographics with a historical analysis of China's labour market structure. Using data from the most recent population census, chapters explore the economic impact of the demographic transition that has taken place over recent decades, from the strict implementation of family planning policies to the current easing of these policies. The book examines income growth and economic development in China after the Second World War with comparative perspectives from other Asian countries including Japan and South Korea. It also devotes a chapter to regional variations in the effectiveness of population control policies, exploring differences in rural and urban areas, and surveys the future challenges for the Chinese government in addressing population and growth-related concerns. This book will be of interest to students and researchers in economic history, labour economics, and demography, as well as those interested in Chinese economic and societal development.

The Labour Market Myth: How the Market Metaphor Hinders our Understanding of Work. (The Future of Work and Employment) 160 pp. 2024:8 (E. Elgar, UK) <722-246>
ISBN 978-1-03-533444-5 hard ¥22,192.- (税込) GB£ 75.00 *
In this incisive book, Paul de Beer interrogates the concept of the labour market and its theoretical shortcomings in treating labour as a commodity. He argues that to offer people a real chance of a satisfactory work life, the idea of the labour market must be replaced with a focus on long-term employment relationships. The Labour Market Myth thoroughly critiques the standard economic approach to employment markets, highlighting how it fails to explain the most pressing problems regarding work and income. Presenting empirical data on diverse aspects of work across a range of affluent countries, De Beer explores issues such as wage differences, long-term unemployment, discrimination against particular groups, and a misplaced emphasis on short-term flexibility and mobility. Ultimately, De Beer advocates for an understanding of employment built upon concepts of intrinsic motivation, cooperation, stability, and long-term relationships, rather than financial incentives and competition.Combining insights from across the social sciences, The Labour Market Myth is a fascinating read for postgraduate students and scholars of labour economics and policy, as well as the sociology of work. It also offers fresh perspectives for those involved in labour relations, such as policy advisors, civil servants, and trade union officials.

Millennial Dreams in Oil Economies: Job Seeking and the Global Political Economy of Labour in Oman. (The Global Middle East) 331 pp. 2024:8 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <720-165>
ISBN 978-1-00-949947-7 hard ¥29,590.- (税込) GB£ 100.00
This book shifts the analysis of economic development in Oman from the traditional focus on oil to the perspective of labour. Focusing on the experiences of workers, jobseekers, and the governance of labour markets, Crystal A. Ennis offers a fresh perspective on regional development and rentier neoliberalism in the Gulf. Highlighting Oman's position within global capitalism, Ennis makes a compelling case for de-exceptionalising the Gulf, arguing that the region's labour markets are global and subject to similar pressures as other global economies. Moving beyond oil also allows Ennis to focus on the social conditions of Oman, where over sixty four percent of the population are under the age of thirty. Ennis offers a rich analysis of historical lineages of labour governance, class formation; and, following protests after 2011 as youth unemployment soared in the region, how authoritarian states react to public pressure and social unrest around perceived economic decline.

Social Transformation and the Global Economy: Labour, Latin America and the Lefts. (Routledge Studies in Labour Economics) 264 pp. 2024:6 (Routledge, UK) <719-240>
ISBN 978-1-03-267862-7 hard ¥39,946.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
The overall context of this book is set by the decline of the globalization paradigm's ability to grasp the complexity and uncertainty of the current era. It takes a new approach based on the frame of "transformation" viewed as a catalyst to understand the complex interconnected nature of the world around us from a concrete, grounded perspective. Labour or work is still what makes the world go round, and Latin America offers a unique laboratory of social transformation since the "pink tide" of the 2000s. The left it refers to is a new non-dogmatic version that does not just recycle old debates but, rather, opens up new perspectives. The book is at once global in its ambition while grounded in labour and Latin American realities. Theoretically based and empirically robust, it will enthuse the reader to pursue their own research on matters covered here.Part I deals with several key debates around labour including the emergence of a precariat, from a standpoint that foregrounds labour agency but also the view from the South, that is, the majority world. Part II takes up various debates around contemporary Latin America from a cultural political economy perspective with an emphasis on the dynamics of social transformation. Part III explores the contributions from the broadly defined left towards an understanding of the current challenges faced by those seeking an alternative to the status quo in Latin America and beyond.Providing a theoretically sophisticated yet readable text on key contemporary issues, this fully interdisciplinary book will find a broad audience among researchers, scholars, and advanced students of labour, Latin American and development studies, economics, sociology, and politics.

Capitalism in the Platform Age: Emerging Assemblages of Labour and Welfare in Urban Spaces. (Springer Studies in Alternative Economics) 371 pp. 2024:3 (Springer, GW) <718-181>

ISBN 978-3-031-49149-8 paper ¥9,896.- (税込) EUR 39.99 *
This open access book provides an overview of urban digital platforms such as Airbnb and Deliveroo, which, along with Amazon, Google, Facebook, and other IT companies, constitute by now the infrastructures for other businesses to operate on and for our social life to go on. These platforms serve as standards-based techno-economic systems that simultaneously capture cooperation through remote coordination and organize labor via algorithm management.Based on a three-years research project, this contributed book outlines a general theory of platform capitalism that conceives these platforms not only as technical devices, but as generative engines that operate at the interface of several aspects, such as digitalization of forms of social cooperation; algorithm-based management of labor and participation; and private and vertical appropriation of profits. These elements are somehow iconic of the capitalist evolution of the last decades, and they open up a reflection on new forms of "primitive accumulation" (in particular regarding data), on the mechanisms used to capture and extract social surplus value, and on the logistic-financial dimensions of capital. Finally, in light of the transformations associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors examine how platforms can evolve into hegemonic organizational structures.Assuming we are all already living in the age of the platform, this book takes a multifaceted approach-combining sociology with urban studies, and political sciences with economics-to grasp the challenges our societies face in terms of ensuring fair economic growth, adequate social protections, and labor rights. It will appeal to anyone interested in digital platforms and how they are changing the organization of labor, urban spaces, and forms of governance.

Architectures of Inequality: Gender Pay Inequity and Britain's Finance Sector. (Feminist Perspectives on Work and Organization) 224 pp. 2024:6 (Bristol U. Pr., UK) <717-231>
ISBN 978-1-5292-4110-5 hard ¥23,672.- (税込) GB£ 80.00
The gender pay gap is economically irrational and yet stubbornly persistent. In 2022, it stands at 14.9% in the UK. While it is shrinking, the rate of closure is slow, varied and by no means consistent. Focusing on the finance industry known for its gender pay disparity, Architectures of Inequality explores the efforts being made to fix the inequity and the factors halting progress for the future. Rachel Verdin provides an original conceptual framework drawing on company data, organizational policy and the experiences of working women to illustrate how entrenched pay inequity remains. Chapters provide a comprehensive assessment of both legal and organizational interventions alongside the experiences of women working in a range of finance firms. Interviewees reveal their practical experiences of the pay, bonus culture and workplace initiatives that are designed to offset these gaps. Their insight demonstrates the organizational blind spots regarding transparency around pay and the factors that impede the utility of workplace policies. Architectures of Inequality will be of interest to researchers from business, law, sociology and economics. More broadly this book may also appeal to those interested in equality, diversity and inclusion, including those seeking to understand how regulatory and firm-based initiatives have affected gender equality measures.

ISBN 978-1-03-211333-3 hard ¥39,946.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
This book thoroughly examines the socio-economic and labor market paths of young NEETs, particularly migrants and women, in the disadvantaged regions of Mediterranean Southern Europe-specifically, the island, coastal, and peripheral areas of Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Spain. It embraces a holistic approach, delving into multiple dimensions of the phenomenon. Rooted in multi-methodological research, it seamlessly integrates quantitative and qualitative methods to provide a comprehensive understanding. Geographically, it spans four Southern European countries, meticulously exploring vulnerable social groups like migrant and women NEETs, which have been understudied. Furthermore, the book illuminates the influence of space and spatial patterns on the NEET phenomenon, effectively connecting precariousness and social exclusion with geography and spatial inequalities across different scales. The book appeals to a diverse audience, spanning human geography, sociology, and migration studies. It extends its relevance to social scientists exploring poverty, social exclusion, precariousness, and socio-spatial injustices. Additionally, it offers valuable insights for postgraduate students in these fields and serves as a complementary resource in social science methodology and theory courses at both graduate and postgraduate levels.

Personalized Support in Youth Labor Market Policy: The Role of Youth Career Agencies. 231 pp. 2023:10 (Springer VS, GW) <714-188>
ISBN 978-3-658-42908-9 paper ¥22,271.- (税込) EUR 89.99
In the face of increasing youth unemployment across Europe, innovative approaches to youth labor market policy are crucial. One such approach is the introduction of 'one-stop shops' for young people. Here, employment offices and other actors, such as youth social services, cooperate to offer young people coordinated advice from a single source. The impact of their introduction upon the young people that use them is, thus far, under-researched. This study begins to fill this gap by outlining the support approach of the German 'youth career agencies' that centers on gaining a more complete picture of the young person's life situation in order to offer them a range of possible support programs. The study interrogates whether the youth career agencies do offer more personalized advice for young people during their transition to employment than classical job center teams. It argues that, if the cooperative relationships between the actors involved in the youth career agencies are of good quality, more personalized support is likely to be offered there. However, personalized support in youth career agencies is still limited by the diverse specifications and target figures demanded of job centers by the Federal Employment Agency and also influenced by the professional background of the individual caseworkers.

The Economics of the UK Health and Social Care Labour Market. 288 pp. 2024:4 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <714-143>

Three million workers delivered health and social care in the UK in 2019, accounting for a tenth of the workforce. These frontline workers were the nurses, doctors, adult care workers, and Allied Health Professions that worked in our hospitals, GP practices, and care homes. Spending on this workforce is the largest single item of cost on health and social care, with fifty percent of the current spend of a typical UK hospital going on its frontline workforce. The Economics of the UK Health and Social Care Labour Market details the size, occupational composition, geographical coverage, and growth of this workforce. Here, Robert Elliott explains why people work in frontline care and what drives the demand for these workers, details the heavy dependence of UK health and social care on foreign trained workers and explores its consequences, and considers how the labour market for frontline workers operates, how these workers' pay is set, and what has happened to it in recent years. Elliott explores the reasons for the acute shortage of some key frontline occupations and explains why economic theory is essential to understanding the way this labour market works and to constructing coherent and effective policy. Finally, the book proposes policies to improve the efficiency of this market and to resolve the problems that currently plague it.

The economics of monopsony power results in lower wages and other forms of compensation, as well as reduced employment. Wealth is transferred from workers to their employers. In addition, the employer's output is reduced, which leads to increased prices for consumers. Monopsony in Labor Markets demonstrates that elements of monopsony are pervasive and explores the available antitrust policy options. It presents the economic and empirical foundations for antitrust concerns and sets out the relevant antitrust policy. Building on this foundation, it examines collusion on compensation, collusive no-poaching agreements, and the inclusion of non-compete agreements in employment contracts. It also addresses the influence of labor unions, labor's antitrust exemption, which permits the exercise of countervailing power, and the consequences of mergers to monopsony. Offering a thorough explanation of antitrust policy, this book identifies the basic economic problems with monopsony in labor markets and explains the remedies currently available.

The Rich Get Richer: American Wage, Wealth and Income Inequality. 196 pp. 2023:8 (World Scientific, SI) <709-195>
ISBN 978-981-12-7729-0 hard ¥17,760.- (税込) US$ 78.00 *
Inequality of wages among workers and inequality of income and wealth among families and households has been rising steadily for the past half-century in the United States and other developed economies. However, the United States stands out for having the most unequal wage and income distributions to begin with and for experiencing the fastest rise in inequality over the following decades. While this has been a long-developing situation and the subject of academic interest for some time, it is only in the last decade or so that inequality has attracted considerable public attention and become a political issue. Inequality has also become a subject of renewed interest among economists, with a growing number of scholars engaged in the development of new databases and the analysis of the causes and effects of increased inequality. This book provides an overview of the economic analysis of wage, income and wealth inequality in the United States, with a focus on this recent research. It provides the reader with an understanding of the complex causes of rising inequality, the serious consequences that make rising inequality an issue for public policy, and the potential policy actions that might be taken to slow or reverse rising inequality. The author presents an economic and statistical analysis in clear non-technical language to allow the general reader or student in an undergraduate course to learn the insights that economists have gained into the issue of inequality in advanced economies. The book contends that rising wage inequality among workers and income and wealth inequality among families reflects the complex interaction of profound changes in the US economy over the last half-century. These are not limited to economic changes like new technology, increased globalization, changes in the internal structure of firms, and the rise of new growth sectors in tech, finance, and health care. Of additional critical importance are changes in public opinion and political platforms and policies that replaced the New Deal view of the economic role of government with a pro-business, free-market philosophy that has changed labor market policy in a direction promoting increased inequality. This major change in the environment raises important questions about the efficacy of policy proposals. An additionally intriguing issue is the ultimate impact of the financial crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic on perceptions of and support for government policies designed to reverse the seemingly inexorable trend toward greater inequality. This book traces the evolution of inequality over time through key concept illustrations and language that is easy enough to understand, even for the general reader.

The Reconstruction of Post-War Labour Markets in The Southern African Development Community: Insights from The Democratic Republic of The Congo. 239 pp. 2023:8 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <708-260>
ISBN 978-3-031-37356-5 hard ¥37,121.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book provides a comprehensive overview of post-war labour market reconstructions, in the context of a regional bloc whose member states have experienced conflict. Focusing on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, the book explores how major conflicts often expose shortcomings in affected countries particularly on their post-war labour market reconstruction processes. The authors discuss how countries in the SADC region in particular are equipped to navigate such processes. This key question drives the overview of relationships between labour market issues and wars of liberation from colonial rule and apartheid, rights to self-determination and racial (in)equality and the need to succinctly explain how labour market issues shaped civil wars in some post-independent SADC member states. The book examines the role of the state in reconstruction processes of post-war labour markets and the contribution of labour market institutions to these reconstructions. It further analyses private sector participation in remaking labour markets and workers' experiences in finding employment in labour markets under reconstruction. The book provides specific insights from experiences in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

ISBN 978-981-9945-69-6 paper ¥9,896.- (税込) EUR 39.99
This book uses the state-level panel data to identify some of the important correlates of employment growth/elasticity and indicators of quality-employment. To do so, it considers a wide spectrum of variables including physical, financial and social infrastructure specific indicators and government spending in certain key areas. In addition to the aggregate employment, the book also comprises analysis of different sectors, regions and gender categories. Based on the results, it identifies crucial determinants which bear important policy implications. The book presents evidence showcasing how the overall investment climate and an effective state, as envisaged in terms of increased social expenditure, are instrumental to improvements in employment elasticity. The findings also reinforce the role of industry-led growth and agglomeration economies in contributing to employment growth. Besides, based on the unit-level data from the periodic labour force surveys, the book tries to answer a wide range of questions such as, what restricts a person from getting absorbed in a high productivity activity; within a given sector why one is in a casual or self-employed job and not in regular wage job; are casual wage jobs in the informal sector different from those in the formal sector; and why the wage variations exist across sectors and activities. The three rounds of periodic labour force surveys reflect on certain individual and household characteristics; in particular, the role of education is seen to be crucial in determining the occupational choice and the wage rate. Finally, the book focuses on the enterprise-level data and identifies the types of units which are vulnerable within the unorganized sector. It assesses the links of the unorganized sector units with their organised sector counterpart and identifies the factors which reduce the economic viability of the units.

Beginning in 1965 Nobel Laureate Gary Becker realized that shadow prices, which reflect the value of one's time, may be at least as important as money prices. Implications of his resulting theory of time allocation were not tested until much later when governments began to collect extensive data on how individuals utilized their time. Time Use in Economics contains original research on new aspects of time use compiled by Daniel S. Hamermesh, a long-time path-breaking labor economist leader in analyzing time use data, and Solomon W. Polachek, a pioneer in gender-related labor market research. Topics include how time is used by type of household, how time is used in particular jobs, how time is used in high versus low growth geographic areas, how time is used after a job loss, how time use affects individual wellbeing, as well as how to interpret the blurred boundaries of time use between leisure and work, a growing issue as more individuals, especially mothers, work from home.

Youth in India: Labour Market Performance and Emerging Challenges. (India Studies in Business and Economics) 203 pp. 2023:10 (Springer, GW) <708-250>
ISBN 978-981-9943-29-6 hard ¥32,171.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book provides an overview of youth labour force and workforce participation in India and explores the dynamics of changing youth labour market in India. Despite notifying a demographic dividend phase, a significant share of youth witnessed higher exclusion (unemployment and not in employment, education or training) from the Indian labour market. Therefore, this book investigates the role of education in labour market and examines open unemployment. It conceptualizes the not-in-employment-education-or-training (NEET) status of youth in Indian context and explores the heterogeneity of NEET youth by analysing the push and pull role of demographic and socio-economic variables. Furthermore, this book examines the nexus of youth labour market status and economic growth in India to provide plausible recommendations for youth's higher, inclusive and sustained participation in the labour market and the country's development pathway. The book creates room for necessary policy interventions considering the changing dynamics of youth labour market and contemplating the challenges of skill, technology and Industry 4.0., which entails a higher emphasis on 're-shape', 're-focus' and 're-share' for enhanced and sustained inclusion of youth in labour market. It is a necessary resource for students, researchers, policymakers, and industry partners interested in exploring and understanding the political economy of youth labour market in India.

Technological advancements, expanding education, and unfettered capitalism have encouraged many around the world to aspire to better lives, even as declines in employment and widening inequality are pushing more and more people into insecurity and hardship. In Egypt, a generation of young men desire fulfilling employment, meaningful relationships, and secure family life, yet find few paths to achieve this. The Labor of Hope follows these educated but underemployed men as they struggle to establish careers and build satisfying lives. In so doing, this book reveals the lived contradiction at the heart of capitalist systems-the expansive dreams they encourage and the precarious lives they produce. Harry Pettit follows young men as they engage a booming training, recruitment, and entrepreneurship industry that sells the cruel meritocratic promise that a good life is realizable for all. He considers the various ways individuals cultivate distraction and hope for future mobility: education, migration, consumption, and prayer. These hope-filled practices are a form of emotional labor for young men, placing responsibility on the individual rather than structural issues in Egypt's economy. Illuminating this emotional labor, Pettit shows how the capitalist economy continues to capture the attention of the very people harmed by it.

Draws a direct line between redlining, incarceration, and gentrification in an American city. This book shows how a century of redlining, disinvestment, and the War on Drugs wreaked devastation on Black people and paved the way for gentrification in Washington, DC. In Before Gentrification, Tanya Maria Golash-Boza tracks the cycles of state abandonment and punishment that have shaped the city, revealing how policies and policing work to displace and decimate the Black middle class. Through the stories of those who have lost their homes and livelihoods, Golash-Boza explores how DC came to be the nation's "murder capital" and incarceration capital, and why it is now a haven for wealthy White people. This troubling history makes clear that the choice to use prisons and policing to solve problems faced by Black communities in the twentieth century-instead of investing in schools, community centers, social services, health care, and violence prevention-is what made gentrification possible in the twenty-first. Before Gentrification unveils a pattern of anti-Blackness and racial capitalism in DC that has implications for all US cities.

Diversity and Precarious Work During Socio-Economic Upheaval: Exploring the Missing Link. 350 pp. 2023:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-371>

Existing research on the rise of precarious forms of employment has paid little attention to gender and diversity challenges. Yet precarious work has damaging effects for vulnerable demographics, with women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities more considerably affected. This volume unpacks this research and offers insights into the role of organizations in fostering inclusive change. It draws an awareness of precarious work and diversity in organizations in three ways: 1. Uncovers and documents the variety of issues facing vulnerable demographic groups at work. 2. The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Labour Market: Future-proofing Work in the Innovation Economy. (Routledge Studies in the Economics of Innovation) 216 pp. 2023:9 (Routledge, UK) <701-211>
ISBN 978-1-03-256429-6 hard ¥39,946.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
The innovation economy is the driver for the development of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and consequently, there is a growing focus on innovation in general and technological innovation in particular. In this context, there is much to suggest that it is the triple impact of artificial intelligence, big data and 5G- and 6G networks that will go beyond the limits of existing competence. This book is about the new competence that is emerging in the wake of artificial intelligence and intelligent robots. It explains how these two technologies are completely fundamental to what is known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The author argues that artificial intelligence will promote automation, which will reduce wages rather than increase unemployment statistics. The book posits that when the utility value of technology and the rate of dissemination of technology is high, people who have the necessary competence will both future-proof their jobs in the labour market and also be among the highest-paid workers in the new economy that is emerging from the innovation economy. Further, by making education more compatible with new technology will enable graduates to access more secure and better paid jobs, and all behavioural fields related to new technology will flourish because they can be used in many contexts to steer people's behaviour in certain directions through the integration of big data and artificial intelligence. The book employs the following scholarly methods: conceptual generalization, scenario-based thinking and historical economic methodology, thus it will be of particular benefit to academic scholars, researchers and graduate students who are concerned with the impact of the fourth industrial revolution on the labour market.

This extensive and comprehensive book tracks persistent racial disparities in the US across multiple regimes of structural racism. It begins with an examination of the economics of racial identity, mechanisms of stratification, and regimes of structural racism. It analyzes trends in racial inequality in education and changes in family structure since the demise of Jim Crow. The book also examines generational trends in income, wealth, and employment for families and individuals, by race, gender, and national region. It explores economic differences among African Americans, by region, ethnicity, nativity, gender, and racial identity. Finally, the book provides a theoretical analysis of structural racism, productivity, and wages, with a special focus on the role of managers and instrumental discrimination inside the firm. The book concludes with an investigation of instrumental discrimination, hate crimes, the criminal legal system, and the impact of mass incarceration on family structure and economic inequality.
