All linguists recognize that competence in a natural language involves knowledge of a lexicon or dictionary; most assume that it also involves knowledge of a grammatical system. Just where the boundary between the lexicon and the grammar lies, however, is a question on which there is little consensus. This problem arises in particular with regard to the field of morphology, with many morphologists taking all morpheme combinations to result from the operation of the syntactic computational system and many others assuming that morphological units like stems and words are either lexically listed or created by nonsyntactic means. The present study, using Japanese and Ryukyuan verbal morphology as its primary database, argues that evidence from the syntactic branch of the grammar and evidence from the phonological branch of the grammar converge on the conclusion that, while inflectional morphology is fully syntactic, derivational morphology has properties that militate against a syntactic treatment. The boundary between grammar and lexicon, then, falls at the boundary between inflection and derivation, rendering morphology "split" between syntactic and nonsyntactic subparts. The book should be of interest not only to morphologists, but to all concerned with the distinction between grammatical and lexical competence.

This edited book brings together studies on morphological case in Japanese, English, and Bantu languages, among others, from morphosyntactic, semantic and historical perspectives. Languages are divided into two types in terms of case: nominative-accusative languages and ergative-absolutive languages. Even if we limit our attention to nominative-accusative languages, morphological case on subjects and objects can vary across languages or even within a single language, either synchronically or diachronically. For instance, certain stative predicates in Japanese allow their subjects and objects to be marked with dative and nominative case, respectively, and subjects in adnominal clauses in Japanese can be marked with genitive case; moreover, genitive subject marking in adnominal clauses has decreased over the past few centuries. Licensing relationships between predicates and cases can also have idiolectal, dialectal, and/or geographical micro-variations and intergenerational and/or diachronic micro-change. This book draws parallels and examines differences between examples of European, Asian and African languages, and discusses whether and how licensing of certain morphological cases (especially, subject marking) is related to the grammatical functions such as Topic and Focus. This book explores gendered language and gender identities negotiated by seven tertiary students of Japanese as an additional language (JAL) in Australia. It demonstrates that while participants are familiar with gendered Japanese as linguistic resources, their self- positioned and ascribed 'learnersness', 'nonnative-speakerness' and 'non- Japaneseness' both inside and outside classroom contexts greatly impact the targeted negotiations. This volume shows that, by moving away from code models that foster restrictive perceptions of language as learned words and rules, and towards an ecolinguistics capable of integrating with concepts of embodied cognition, it is possible to recognise a broad range of connections with a language from which an individual or community has become estranged. Using the Ainu of Japan as an example and comparator, this book reviews historical and contemporary suppression of languages as a means of, or as a bi-product of, the suppression of their speakers.Preservation of the Ainu language, which had no written form, has been central to official culture promotion programs, but the language has steadily declined in use. The Ainu experience has much in common with that of communities taken over and suppressed by oppressive forces in other countries and spans rural and urban contexts. Susan Samata examines the historical, social and ecolinguistic contexts of Ainu, with particular emphasis on presentation and perception in daily life. She also considers how aspects of ecolinguistic theory may be mapped onto museum practices, television and cinema, popular literature, and the promotion of tourism. These are then compared to the sociolinguistic situations of a selection of other languages and cultures in China, North America and Scandinavia. By highlighting points of similarity and dissimilarity, Samata demonstrates the factors that operate in the suppression of people and their languages and suggests ways in which the perspective described may support resistance to suppression and assimilation, not least in language teaching areas.

This book challenges several assumptions commonly encountered in Japanese dialectology: that the pitch-accent analysis of modern Tokyo Japanese is an appropriate basis for describing the suprasegmental phonology of other dialects and earlier stages of Japanese; that the Kyoto-type dialects have been more conservative than dialects to their east and west; that the first split in proto-Japanese was the separation of proto-Ryukyuan; and so on. Salience' is a linguistic phenomenon whereby information that is 'given', or 'new', is distributed and presented within a sentence in particular ways that convey its relevance. Although it has been widely described as the speaker's linguistic choices based on the hearer's perspective, it has received less attention as the speaker's manipulations of the hearer's cognitive states. This timely study redresses that balance by analysing several morphosyntactic phenomena in Japanese, drawing on a wide range of authentic language examples. Spoken on Kurima, a miniscule island in the Miyakojima municipality in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, Kurima-Miyako is a South Ryukyuan topolect, a regional variant of the Miyako language. With most fluent speakers aged 80 or older and the island's depopulation progressing, the topolect of Kurima faces imminent extinction, a reflection of a common pattern in the Ryukyus, whereupon the vernaculars of small islands and isolated remote areas have been facing multifold minorization for decades on the part of the dominant variety/varieties of the area (Shimoji and Hirara in the case of Kurima), Okinawan, and standard Japanese. Responding to the urgent task of producing a comprehensive description while it still has native speakers, the present volume is the first ever attempt at a systemic presentation of the Kurima topolect in any language. It also uses comparative evidence from Ryukyuan and Mainland Japonic languages to provide new proto-language reconstructions and offer insights into the history of Japonic languages.

This book is an investigation of an unprecedented learner corpus systematically collected from learners of Japanese as a second or foreign language in 20 areas of the world. It addresses the issues of second language acquisition in general, and of Japanese in particular. In the 50s and 60s the main factor underlying the errors committed by foreign language learners was considered to be 'language transfer.' In the 70s it became increasingly clear that learners with different L1s commit similar mistakes in the acquisition of a given L2. It was proposed that the main source of the errors was not 'language transfer' but a potentially universal 'inter language' which learners construct on their transition trajectory from L1 to L2. In the 80s various other approaches such as 'universal grammar', 'monitor model', 'competition model' evolved, all aiming to account for the errors of L2 learners. Against this backdrop, this proposed volume offers new insights to the theory of language acquisition by focusing on a major Asian language, viz Japanese, and makes a significant contribution to the theory of language acquisition through an investigation of empirical data of learners of Japanese with as many as 12 different L1s and varied typological profiles.

Diachrony, Synchrony, and Typology of Tense and Aspect in Old Japanese reconstructs the synchronic system of tense and aspect in Old Japanese, which until now has not been examined using the tools of contemporary linguistic theory. Kazuha Watanabe analyzes syntactic distribution of the temporal suffixes in the Man'yoshu, an eighth-century poetry collection, and compares the results with data from well-attested languages. The author then integrates the semantic property of each suffix into the overall synchronic tense-aspect system of Old Japanese. Watanabe further compares the reconstructed system with the distributions of the same suffixes in Early Modern Japanese using Genji Monogatari, an eleventh-century novel, in order to provide further support for the synchronic analysis of Old Japanese. This approach is fundamentally different from traditional analyses, which identify the meanings of the temporal suffixes based on contextual information. In addition, previous analyses have produced a uniform analysis covering the entire 700-year period from Old to Early Modern Japanese. Instead, Watanabe proposes that Old Japanese had a temporal system distinct from the later period.

This volume is the first to present a detailed survey of the systems of verb-verb complexes in Asian languages from both a synchronic and diachronic perspective. Many Asian languages share, to a greater or lesser extent, a unique class of compound verbs consisting of a main verb and a quasi-auxiliary verb known as a 'vector' or 'explicator'. These quasi-auxiliary verbs exhibit unique grammatical behaviour that suggests that they have an intermediate status between full lexical verbs and wholly reduced auxiliaries. They are also semantically unique, in that when they are combined with main verbs, they can convey a rich variety of functional meanings beyond the traditional notions of tense, aspect, and modality, such as manner and intensity of action, benefaction for speaker or hearer, and polite or derogatory styles in speech. In this book, leading specialists in a range of Asian languages offer an in-depth analysis of the long-standing questions relating to the diachrony and geographical distribution of verb-verb complexes. The findings have implications for the general understanding of the grammaticalization of verb categories, complex predicate formation, aktionsart and event semantics, the morphology-syntax-semantics interface, areal linguistics, and typology.
