This book offers reflections on emerging issues in psychiatry today, told through the lens of interviews conducted with patients of the former Forensic Psychiatric Hospitals in Italy. Using narrativization, this book brings together clinical cases told in the first person which have allowed the author to develop insights into these issues. The author considers the patient/offender who poses a series of questions about mental illness itself, its origins, the factors related to its onset, such as substances, differential diagnosis, treatment paths (both pharmacological and rehabilitative) and the cultural factors that may influence the outcomes, providing invaluable insights for clinicians, researchers and students of Psychiatry and Psychology in international settings.

This open access book is an integrated historical and philosophical investigation of several problematic situations that emerge from diverse areas of medical practice. These include (but are not limited to):

• Paying less attention to patients who are suffering with symptoms because no identifiable pathological lesion or pathophysiological process can be found.
• Paying too much attention to patients who are not suffering with symptoms because pathological lesions or pathophysiological processes have been found.
• The tendency to understand patients at risk of developing pathology as being diseased.
• The tendency to disregard the importance of wider societal consequences of definitions of disease and health.

The book shows that many of these problems are related to what disease and health are considered to be and argues that these problems can be addressed by reconsidering the concepts of health and disease employed in practice. It argues for a pragmatic reconceptualization of health and disease that allows clinicians, researchers, and lay people to understand health and disease in many ways, depending on the specific context in which they find themselves and the problems they are trying to solve. In doing so, authors are careful to show how this pragmatism does not endorse "silly" forms of relativism, in which knowledge is reduced to belief or to whatever people find expedient to believe. This work is relevant for philosophers and historians a well as for doctors, health policy makers and other health professionals because it addresses problems sourced from medical practice, albeit using philosophical and historical methods.

This edited collection is a follow-up to Algoma University's inaugural conference on mental health and addiction held at the Brampton campus in Ontario, Canada. We live in a society where many marginalized communities continue to bear a historically disproportionate burden on their psychological, mental, and economic well-being, especially under the Covid-19 pandemic. Covid-19 has had a continuing impact on marginalized and racialized communities at all levels. We are now witnessing the compounded effects in the form of a worsening mental health and addiction crisis and its subsequent impact on children's education, service delivery, and overall psychosocial well-being.

Covid-19 has widened the gap and increased poverty disparities between high-income and low-income individuals. Furthermore, it has affected the psychosocial resilience of people. As communities of scholars, practitioners, and researchers, we have a responsibility to address these existential issues in ways that are ethical and transformative. This type of engagement should help mitigate the consequences of the pandemic in an intersectional manner. These conversations should assist us in understanding and addressing the trauma and suffering that marginalized communities and individuals continue to endure. Together, we can work to find answers to mental health and addiction challenges, while valuing people's histories and realities within this intersectional engagement.

This book explores the experiences of older people who provide care within marriage, highlighting the neglected role of older spouse carers and the positive social contributions they make. Drawing on relevant data, literature and research including in-depth interviews conducted with 26 older spouse carers, the author challenges classed, gendered, and other assumptions and expectations around older age and unpaid caring. These include the beliefs that older age is a time of passivity and dependency, that caring is a primarily female role that transcends class divides and that this caring is a normal part of the spousal relationship and not worthy of special attention. In addition to challenging these assumptions, the book will consider the implications of findings for service provision.

Few aspects of social policy have been more controversial than the effects of Conditional Cash Transfers (CCTs) on gender relations and policy outcomes on gender relations are linked to policy designs. Development and social policy communities have recognized gender equality as a cornerstone of development and social progress. Nonetheless, designing policy to integrate gender equality goals into social policies is rendered that much more complicated as and when these policies travel. In Mexico in 1997, the first CCT, Progresa, looked quite different than CCTs look today. Embedded in the design was Affirmative Action geared toward girls, as was a clearly enunciated concern about the program's effects on female empowerment. For the 2005 Peruvian CCT, Juntos, the story was very different. Its design did not include any gender equality goals and it reproduced long-standing social policy legacies of gendered exclusions. Therefore, this book is about the alteration of Conditional Cash Transfer designs in relation to gender equality goals as they have made their way through Latin America as well as through the World Bank. This book aims to account for "the fading goal of gender equality" (Jenson 2015) across time as part of this regional trajectory. In short, it tracks the how and the why of this trajectory in relation to gender equality goals.
