Kibong'oto Hospital, opened in 1926, is an East African tuberculosis treatment center located on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Its history is crucial to understanding tuberculosis in Tanzania and, more broadly, in Africa. Since 1926, this library has documented an enormous number of patient lives, staff careers, diagnoses, treatments, clinical trials, and much more. For today's readers, the library provides insight into a history of clinical medicine in Africa, for which very few comparable archives exist.
Gradmann supplements this site-specific research with material from national and international archives, as well as interviews with former staff involved in that history. The book's four chapters offer perspectives on colonial epidemiological research in the interwar years; on late colonial healthcare development plans and the arrival of modern drug therapies; on the role of a national tuberculosis hospital in a newly independent country; and on the history of tuberculosis control in an age of economic crisis, HIV, and emergent global health-treatment programs. Finally, Gradmann discusses what the history of a large hospital can add to today's tuberculosis research, control policy, and historiography.

Controlling, surveilling, and punishing poor families through the child welfare system
In a typical year, one in five US children have some interaction with the child welfare system. Countless other families, particularly those who struggle to care for their children due to poverty or economic insecurity, fear child welfare system involvement. Though imagined as a system that protects children from caregivers' maltreatment, contributors to Policing Not Protecting Families argue that the child welfare system polices and punishes poor parents who are unable to meet white, middle class parenting standards due to structural inequalities.

This monograph analyses the evolution of the welfare state in Spain from qualitative and quantitative perspectives. It basically relies on estimates of public social spending from 1850 to the present and offers comparisons with the rest of Europe.

As a whole, the volume sheds light on the historical, political, and economic conditions at play during the relatively late development of the Spanish welfare state. Three key driving factors are explored: the political regime, social inequality, and Spain's exposure to international markets. Drawing on life-course, gender, and welfare regime theories and relying on primary longitudinal qualitative data (life- story interviews with 90 older workers) and primary longitudinal quantitative data (life-course calendar surveys among 802 older individuals), Avoiding Retirement in Chile critically examines the generalizability of traditional age norms involving the transition to retirement within a persistently uncertain and precarious setting.

Grounded in systematic empirical evidence, this study allows us to reflect on the fact that a definitive and permanent exit from any form of economic activity is increasingly viewed as a fictional scenario by most older individuals. This arises not only from highly precarious social conditions but also from a complex process involving individual agency, wherein the status of being 'retired' is progressively less voluntarily anticipated.

Strategies of resistance by undocumented young adults

About 825,000 of the more than two million undocumented young adults in the United States benefited from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program started by President Obama in 2012. Through DACA, these young adults are able to work legally in the United States and have been insulated from deportation. However, since President Trump's attempted termination of the program in 2017, DACA recipients have endured a rollercoaster of legal battles that have left them in an unimaginable state of prolonged limbo.
Amid this rapidly shifting political climate, many undocumented young adults have joined the large-scale, high-visibility social movement to fight for policy change and immigrant justice. Yet often overlooked are the thousands more DACA recipients nationwide who have never participated in immigration-related activism. As Christina M. Getrich argues, in less publicly visible ways, they are nonetheless fighting for immigrant well-being and justice in their everyday adult lives, and their more private forms of action should be considered political activism. Drawing from five years of rich ethnographic research with a diverse population of thirty DACA recipients living in the Washington, D.C., area, Everyday Activists portrays the alternative political engagement strategies they enact in their daily lives as they leverage their unique knowledge bases and skill sets and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
