Currently, religion is absent or severely underemphasized within the medical humanities, and The Routledge Handbook of Spirituality, Religion, and the Medical Humanities forges direct engagements between the fields of medical and health humanities, on the one hand, and religious studies and theological studies on the other. This book argues that virtue ethics should be incorporated into public health ethics. It provides the theoretical foundations for a virtue ethics that is applicable to public health, as well as political institutions more broadly.

Ethical analyses of public health policies and practices have been mostly conducted in terms of examining the best consequences or weighing outcomes against liberty, autonomy, justice, and harm. While these debates are important, analyses conducted only in these terms leave a huge range of moral issues under-examined. This book contends that a virtue ethics developed for political institutions such as public health provides the tools for a more robust moral analysis of institutional structures, actions, and responsibilities. First, it presents theoretical arguments for political virtues, explaining how institutions like public health have moral agency and how these institutional agents can, in turn, have (or lack) virtues. It then presents three political virtues that are particularly relevant to public health: justice, civic friendship, and epistemic humility. Each of these virtues is important to what it means for public health to do its work excellently, and each sheds light upon the moral justifiability of past or current public health practice.

This monograph shows the contribution of foster families to the system of social care for a child permanently or temporarily deprived of the biological family environment.

Adopting a theoretical and empirical approach that draws on survey research conducted with 212 foster families, it shows their involvement in the system, the functioning of foster families in terms of carrying out care and education tasks entrusted to them, as well as their expectations and the difficulties they face in their parenting work. Identifying the motives of the surveyed parents that prompted them to start a foster family, the research also shows how foster families meet the basic needs of children in their care.

Offering advice on the development of practical requirements and conclusions for the care and education work of foster families as well as centres and institutions that support them, this book will be of interest to all scholars and students of child welfare, child psychology and child and family social work.

Tuberculosis, once a leading cause of death in Europe and North America, was understood to be preventable and even curable by the early twentieth century. Yet despite growing knowledge about the disease and interventions that would slow its spread, tuberculosis deaths among First Nations in Canada remained staggeringly high. Government policies rooted in colonialism exacerbated a tuberculosis epidemic.

Wilful Neglect explores the devastating consequences of the Department of Indian Affairs' failed responses to tuberculosis among First Nations in Canada from 1867 to 1945. Even when medical treatment for tuberculosis became widely available, and despite the codification of the federal government's obligations in treaties and other legislation, the basic health needs of First Nations remained unmet. The government instead prioritized an assimilationist agenda, including the placement of Indigenous children in residential schools, which became hotbeds for the spread of the infection. Drawing on the department's own annual reports, memoranda, and budgets over more than seventy years, Jane Thomas traces key moments, decisions, and individuals involved in shaping federal health policy, laying bare the repercusions of racializing a disease.

Health policies developed by colonial governments without the involvement of First Nations have always failed. Wilful Neglect demonstrates a direct link between the federal government's historical health policies and the disparities that continue into the present.
