The book addresses digital transformation in companies and examines the changes for workplace stakeholders. The focus is on how co-determination interacts with digital transformation. This also puts a transformation of co-determination itself on the agenda, during which the direct participation of employees expands significantly in the interest-political positioning of works councils. Moreover, participation becomes a strategic resource for co-determination.

This book examines how the concept of 'Start-up' has transcended its original acceptation as a synonym for an early-stage, hi-tech company, to become a historically specific way of knowing and acting in the world. 'Start-up' is everywhere. The term has been employed since the 1970s to indicate any company with a limited operating history and in a phase of market discovery. In the 1990s, the term gained a more preciseconnotation, one connected to the kind of experimental, technology-based, and venture-backed businessesthat became the most visible embodiment of the New Economy techno-utopianism. Today, the term is widely known and used beyond managerial circles, so much so that it has become a subject of TV shows
such as Shark Tank, MTV's Dropout, and HBO's irreverent series Silicon Valley. 'Start-up' is no longer just an economic and managerial concept but, the book argues, also a cultural phenomenon that is reshaping the way we conceive work in the 21st century. It does this by furthering the idea that withdrawal from traditional disciplinary regimes such as formal education and wage labor is a necessary step on the pathtoward professional realization and personal freedom. But what happens when one decides to leave the safe harbor of regular employment and set sail on the tumultuous waters of independent work? The book addresses this question through a 22-month ethnographic investigation of the Vancouver new media and digital industries. Through interviews with creative practitioners and participation in informal gatheringsfor tech workers, the book provides a compelling perspective on creative work in the start-up age.?

This book investigates youth employment programmes across nine African countries, providing important insights into the world's youngest continent by population, in which 60% of people are aged under 25.

By 2050, the labour force in sub-Saharan Africa is expected to be almost double the size of the labour force in high-income countries, representing a massive shift in the world's working population and providing a significant challenge for job creation. In this book, contributors bring together insights from more than 500 in-depth interviews and 1,500 focus group participants to consider whether youth employment programmes are effectively reaching vulnerable groups. This book tackles the problem of political clientelism in the allocation of benefits and considers the level of coordination that is taking place across programmes and political institutions.

Combining rich empirical findings with data about labour market outcomes and institutions, this book will be an important read for researchers wishing to understand the political economy of youth employment policy in Africa.

Workers Without Companies contributes to the debate on the future of work in a productive landscape that is now global, while ways of working diversify at an unprecedented pace.

Faced with several decades of mass unemployment in Europe and the activation of self-employment-especially through intermediary platforms-this book examines the transformation of the wage system not only in traditional salaried sectors but also in self-employment, agriculture, and the field of science and knowledge production. The authors identify a common movement: the growing detachment between companies and their employees. This deep-rooted and enduring trend is reshaping the wage relationship at the core of modern societies, continuously altering and destabilising workers' lives. Recognising this shift is essential to interrogating what work-and our lives-will become in the years ahead. The book, therefore, concludes with a proposed research agenda structured around five key axes.

As such, Workers Without Companies will appeal to sociologists with interests in work and industry, employment and unemployment, organisation studies and labour relations.

The Economics of Immigration provides students with the tools needed to examine the impact of immigration and immigration policies over the past century. The main objectives of the book are for students to understand the decision to migrate, the impacts of immigration on markets and government budgets, and the consequences of immigration policies in a global context.

Students will develop an appreciation of the importance of immigration as a separate academic field within labor economics and international economics. Topics covered include the effects of immigration on labor markets, housing markets, international trade, tax revenues, human capital accumulation, government fiscal balances, and climate migration. The book also considers the impacts of immigration on what firms choose to produce, the ethnic diversity of restaurants, and financial markets, as well as the theory and evidence on immigrants' economic assimilation. The textbook includes comparisons of immigration policies in a number of immigrant-receiving and sending countries, highlighting recent policy changes in Europe. Finally, the book explores immigration topics that directly affect low- and middle-income countries, such as remittances, brain drain, and human trafficking. Readers will be fully equipped with the tools needed to understand and contribute to policy debates on this controversial topic.

This is the first textbook to comprehensively cover the economics of immigration, and it is suitable both for economics students and for those studying migration in other disciplines, such as sociology and political science.

Modern Labor Economics: Theory and Public Policy, now in its fifteenth edition, continues to be the leading text for one-semester courses in labor economics at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

It offers a thorough overview of the modern theory of labor market behavior and reveals how this theory is used to analyze public policy. Designed for students who may not have extensive backgrounds in economics, the text balances theoretical coverage with examples of practical policy applications that allow students to see concepts in action. The authors believe that showing students the social implications of the concepts discussed in the course will enhance their motivation to learn. Consequently, this text presents numerous examples of policy decisions that have affected, and been affected by, the ever-shifting labor market.

This new edition continues to offer the following:

  • a balance of relevant, contemporary examples
  • coverage of the current economic climate
  • an introduction to basic methodological techniques and problems
  • tools for review and further study

This fifteenth edition presents updated data and examples throughout and offers greater coverage of monopsonistic labor markets (including anti-trust regulations and rulings), the economics of education, the gender pay gap, recent developments in unions, and unemployment, plus new material on the work-from-home trend and AI. Supplementary materials for students and instructors are also available.

Writings from feminist scholars of color about their experiences during the pandemic.

Bringing uncertainty, fear, and change, the COVID-19 pandemic shook the world, altered people's lives, and sparked a wave of introspection. Underserved communities-people of color, women, and queer people among them-were affected the most, and their experiences, in turn, reflected hope and opportunities to reinvent themselves individually and collectively. Drawing on Gloria AnzaldUa's use of nepantla-the NAhuatl word meaning "in-between space," the en medio and a liminal space between worlds imbued with change-World Making in Nepantla collects writings about the hurdles feminist scholars of color faced during the pandemic years.

Contributors explore how COVID affected feminist scholars of color while recognizing the ways in which inequality influences experience and also celebrating the resilience of communities all over the world. Dispatches from classrooms and quarantined homes and introspective essays on disability, mutual aid, and borders are included among the essays here. These pieces serve as a concrete record, capturing an ephemeral time already being lost to memory. Created during the heart of the pandemic, World Making in Nepantla is an honest and intimate recording of how feminist scholars of color navigated struggles and found strength during an era that forever changed the modern world.

Youth workers are essential to the fabric of society. Schools, families, and many of our social institutions rely heavily on their work, yet their contributions often go unrecognized. Laboring in the Shadows explores the critical role of Black youth workers, especially in the lives of vulnerable youth, and the challenges they face in their unstable, underappreciated position.

Bianca J. Baldridge situates the experiences of Black youth workers within the broader context of anti-Blackness and historical inequities. Drawing on rich interview data from across the United States, Baldridge offers a nuanced analysis of how the precarity of this work-marked by high turnover rates, low wages, and housing insecurity-compounds the challenges these workers face. She highlights how Black youth workers resist these structural harms by adopting and implementing innovative pedagogical practices alongside practices of "freedom dreaming" and joy as forms of resistance and pathways to agency for youth despite their precarious roles.

Positioning Black youth workers within a broader network of informal care workers in the United States, Baldridge underscores the significance, fragility, precarity, and power of these dedicated professionals, their essential work, and the possibilities they create for youth.

What does it mean to belong in a nation? All Work Is Cultural Work examines how Haitian women living in diaspora find and create status through their work outside the home. Nikita Carney draws on ethnographic data gathered over several years in Boston, Montreal, and Paris with women who left Haiti in search of other things: safety, financial security, and opportunity. Ranging from administrative assistants to dancers to preschool teachers, the women in this study share their rich experiences, teaching us how they found a place in their new host nations through paid labor. Focusing on small, daily interactions in the workplace, these women's narratives highlight the ways in which often invisible daily cultural practices build and re-build both the nation and the home. Taking into account the overlapping and interlocking systems of oppression her participants face both nationally and globally, Carney uses an intersectional analysis to illuminate how the workplace serves as a central site in which Haitian women become raced, gendered, and classed within the nation. Ultimately, the lives and experiences of these women point to one conclusion: culture is indivisible from labor and labor from culture, with paid labor providing a vital method for national culture to be created and recreated each and every day.

Recent decades have witnessed protests that are unlike many of the social movements of previous centuries. They are not led by any party, union or leader, but by ordinary people. Their deep roots are existential rather than material.

These protests are not driven by class consciousness or ideology but by the sense that people have been abandoned, stripped of their rights and shunted out to the peripheries of social and economic life. This is the movement of the dispossessed - of a mass of ordinary people who have gained a will of their own and are no longer content to comply with the directives of elites who want to tell them how to live and behave. The high-profile political events of recent years - Brexit, the election of Trump, the rise of right-wing parties - are merely surface tremors of a much deeper tectonic shift caused by the slow displacement of a forgotten continent.

In this book Christophe Guilluy uncovers this forgotten continent of the dispossessed and shows how ordinary people are rising up and responding to their programmed disappearance by forging an alternative to a doomed model.

Economies of Gender: Masculinity, "Mail Order Brides," and Women's Labor offers a provocative exploration of the international dating industry, challenging simplistic narratives of human trafficking and scams while shedding light on the economic dynamics of gender. Through twelve years of fieldwork, the book delves into the motivations and experiences of men who seek relationships abroad, driven by dissatisfaction with Western women who, they believe, no longer embody traditional femininity. By examining romantic tourism hotspots such as Ukraine, Colombia, and the Philippines, Economies of Gender reveals how these international settings serve as "intimate frontiers," where men seek to extract femininity capital and bolster their status. It illuminates the often-unseen economic underpinnings of relationships and questions how global gender dynamics shape desires, fantasies, and intimate markets. Through its compelling analysis, the book broadens the conversation on gender, power, and the commodification of intimacy in a globalized world.

This book integrates the agricultural producer service sector into a three-sector general equilibrium framework to examine the modernization of small-scale agriculture in developing economies. By incorporating agricultural transformation and rural-urban migration dynamics, it presents a theoretical analysis of the determinants of wage inequality between skilled and unskilled labor from multiple perspectives. Over the past few decades, industrialization and urbanization have progressed in parallel, driving the modernization of the agricultural sector. Traditional development economics often conceptualizes agricultural modernization within the context of large-scale operations, assuming that traditional agriculture can directly adopt modern non-agricultural intermediate inputs after some transformations. However, small-scale agriculture-the dominant form in developing countries-follows a distinct modernization path. This divergence manifests in two key ways. First, labor substitution and migration. The introduction of modern intermediate non-agricultural inputs tends to displace agricultural labor, accelerating rural-urban migration. Second, the role of the agricultural producer service sector: Due to the prevalence of small-scale operations, an intermediary sector-the agricultural producer service sector-emerges to facilitate the modernization process. These differences significantly influence intersectoral labor allocation and wage inequality. Given that agricultural modernization, policy shifts, and socioeconomic changes concurrently affect labor allocation, it is crucial to analyze how these exogenous factors shape wage disparities in the presence of agricultural transformation. To model this process, the book establishes a two-layer vertical production structure: non-agricultural goods are partially utilized by the agricultural producer service sector, which then produces intermediate inputs that substitute for agricultural labor. The study focuses on three major factors that profoundly impact rural labor migration and wage inequality: pro-rural policies(mitigation labor market distortion, raising rural public infrastructure, increased agricultural subsidies), FDI and internal remittances, and technological progress (green technological progress and skill-biased technical change). The findings offer novel insights into wage inequality in developing economies and provide a theoretical foundation for formulating development policies.

Five years after the pandemic forced a global experiment in remote work, organizations are facing a critical inflection point. For the first time, we have evidence, drawn from experience and research, on what works and what doesn't.
In their important new book, In Praise of the Office: The Limits to Hybrid and Remote Work, Wharton professor Peter Cappelli and workplace strategist Ranya Nehmeh deliver a balanced, research-based approach to navigating the complex landscape of remote and hybrid work. They provide a fresh perspective on why hybrid models often fail and what organizations must do differently to succeed in this new era-with takeaways that may not be welcome to all.
In this timely book, discover:
+ Why remote work succeeded initially but has become increasingly problematic over time
+ What has been lost with the move away from in-office work
+ The hidden benefits of in-person work
+ How work dynamics post-pandemic have further influenced workplace culture and employee attitudes
+ How career advancement opportunities have changed
+ How new hires are faring
+ How the changes have impacted home life
In Praise of the Office also reveals when in-office works best, when fully remote work works best, and what is required to make hybrid work. Plus, it identifies what aspects of hybrid can do the most damage to employers and employees.
Fast-reading and practical, In Praise of the Office offers all of us-employers and employees alike- the tools and insights to make informed decisions about the future of work, whether navigating a return-to-office initiative, refining hybrid models, or fully embracing remote work. Cappelli and Nehmeh provide leaders with the clarity and direction to build stronger, more resilient workplaces.

This comprehensive Handbook presents an overview of current research and thinking within the sociology of work. The contributors examine how the organisation and experience of work are shaped by the evolution of global capitalism, trends in political economy, and rapid technological developments.

The Handbook explores varied forms and experiences of work - from factory, informal, and agricultural work, to more recent developments like platform work, coworking, neo-craft work, and emotional labour. Contributing authors also reflect on social inequalities in the workplace, interrogating the interplay between class, identity, race, gender, and age, and they address important policy issues, such as the climate crisis, digitisation and artificial intelligence, modern slavery, and the future of work. Each chapter critically evaluates core sociological concepts and theories while also identifying potential future research agendas.

The Handbook on the Sociology of Work is a vital resource for scholars and students of sociology, political science, employment studies, and business and management. Practitioners and policymakers will also benefit from the in-depth coverage of such a wide range of contemporary topics in the field.

Beyond Market Meritocracy investigates how employers evaluate and treat male and female employees with varied family care responsibilities in three different labor regimes of Chinese societies - the neo-liberal Hong Kong market under a productivist welfare system, the market-driven private sector of mainland China struggling with the post-COVID-19 economic decline, and the state-supervised public sector of mainland China with socialist legacies. Through extensive and empirical data, it uniquely enriches the existing literature by examining the rationales of employers in the comparisons of different types of family caregivers and non-caregivers and of different labor regimes in China. While previous studies on family caregivers' dilemmas in the labor market often focus on the incompatibility of family care duties with the capitalist market meritocracy, this book identifies four schemes of rationales among employers in the three labor regimes of China: a market meritocracy of competence, competitiveness, and efficiency; a moral virtuocracy of family care and responsibilities; a cultural schema of gendered division of labor; and structural resources and constraints embedded in labor protection and family welfare policies. The four schemes sometimes corroborate but sometimes contradict one another in different employment contexts, based on which employers construct their evaluations of family caregivers in the labor market. The multiplicity of employers' rationales demonstrates how their attitudes and practices go beyond merely calculating the market merits of family caregivers, and sheds new light on the complexity in the relationships between workplace organization and labor rights and future directions for work and family policy programs.
