Fair Skilled Mobility: A Manifesto. (Routledge Studies in Development, Mobilities and Migration) 220 pp. 2026:5 (Routledge, UK) <763-261>
ISBN 978-1-041-09371-8 hard ¥44,181.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book sets out a new approach to the global flow of skilled migration, one based on ethical, fair, balanced and sustainable frameworks. Instead of focusing on human capital loss and 'brain drain', the book argues that we should look towards mutually beneficial outcomes. In a world where demographic shifts, rapid technological advancements connected to automation and AI-enhancement, and evolving economic landscapes are reshaping labour markets, this book serves as a guide for 'doing' skilled migration, highlighting shared development, social inclusion, and economic resilience opportunities. Seeking to provoke and inspire policy makers, researchers, and practitioners, the book sets out a manifesto for transparent, fair and sustainable migration skill infrastructure, based on 13 theses. Based on extensive original data from across the Link4Skills consortium and its sister projects GS4S and Skills4Justice across at least 15 countries of origin and 15 countries of destinations, the book addresses critical issues such as the depletion of labour markets in origin countries and the challenges of skill recognition and labour market integration and retention in destination countries. This important new book will be a breath of fresh air for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers looking for possible solutions to global migration skill flow challenges.

Governing Solidarity in European Labour Markets: Atypical Employment and Minimum Wage Reform in Spain and Portugal. (Routledge Studies in Labour Economics) 200 pp. 2026:3 (Routledge, UK) <763-263>
ISBN 978-1-032-85795-4 hard ¥47,228.- (税込) GB£ 155.00
Across Western Europe, the rise of atypical employment has deepened insider-outsider divides. This book asks why two structurally similar countries - Portugal and Spain - pursued different routes to reduce labour market segmentation following the conclusion of the sovereign debt crisis. It argues that the composition of the governing social bloc drives the orientation of reform, while the choice of decision-making arena (parliamentary law-making versus tripartite social concertation) and the EU's evolving social governance shape the breadth and depth of reform.Building on the distinction between competitive and inclusive solidarity, the book compares four domains: employment protection and collective bargaining; statutory minimum wages; regulation of ride-hailing platforms in passenger transport; and the regularisation of precarious public sector work. The analysis covers Portugal's progressive cycle (2015-2021) and Spain's coalition years (2019-2025), drawing on elite interviews, content analysis of parliamentary debates and media coverage, and official documents. The findings reveal a targeted, outsider-focused strategy in Portugal and a more universal re-regulation in Spain.Governing Solidarity offers a fresh framework and rich evidence for scholars of political economy and industrial relations, as well as advanced students and policymakers confronting labour market segmentation.

The Future of Work in Developing Countries. (Initiative for Policy Dialogue at Columbia: Challenges in Development and Globalization) 456 pp. 2026:3 (Columbia U. Pr., US) <763-208>
ISBN 978-0-231-22033-0 hard ¥16,830.- (税込) US$ 75.00
One of the most pressing issues in development today is the employment challenge in low- and middle-income countries. As more young people enter the labor force-and as structural transformation unfolds amid deindustrialization, technological disruption, and global competition-the question of how to create sufficient decent jobs has become central to the economic future of the Global South. Although this is a shared challenge across developing regions, it is particularly acute in Africa, where rapid demographic change and urbanization are colliding with limited industrial expansion.Bringing together leading international scholars, The Future of Work in Developing Countries examines the employment problem from multiple perspectives. Early chapters develop conceptual frameworks around corporations and the global hierarchy of production. Subsequent contributions investigate the dynamics of structural transformation, the role of firms in linking production and labor to surplus, and the design of industrial and technology policies. Later chapters turn to detailed case studies-especially from Africa-that illustrate the possibilities and limits of different growth paths, and comparative insights from Asia and Latin America provide further perspective.By combining rigorous theoretical analysis with grounded empirical research, this book demonstrates that employment creation is not an automatic byproduct of growth but a political and institutional project. It offers fresh insights for scholars of development, political economy, and economic history, as well as for policy makers seeking strategies to promote inclusive transformation in Africa and beyond.
