Fine, Lisa, Downriver Detroit: The Working Class, the Environment, and the Bonds of Place. (Working Class in American History) 264 pp. 2026:4 (U. Illinois Pr., US) <763-884>
ISBN 978-0-252-04694-0 hard ¥24,684.- (税込) US$ 110.00
ISBN 978-0-252-08908-4 paper ¥6,732.- (税込) US$ 30.00

This exploration of an industrial suburb south of Detroit takes seriously the connections to place and the natural world among the working-class people who lived, worked, and played in the region. After a consideration of this type of analysis and demographic and environmental features of this highly industrialized region, each chapter considers a different topic or episode in the on-going efforts of the working-class citizens to create a humane and habitable community. Efforts to combat environmental pollution in this highly industrialized region predate the start of the environmental movement. When working-class people worked to pursue clean water or preserve precious marsh lands along the Detroit River and its tributaries, they worked through sportsmen's organizations, appealed to state agencies, or engaged in grass roots organizing. Local unions objected to the building of an atomic power plant in the regions in the1950s. And, amidst the challenges of deindustrialization, one group of steel workers attempted to buy their own company to secure their families and communities in the region. When faced with economic and environmental challenges, the working-class of Downriver Detroit expressed an enduring connection to their region, a 'bond of place.'

Prince, Cathryn J., For the Love of Labor: The Life of Pauline Newman. 240 pp. 2026:3 (U. Illinois Pr., US) <763-1208>
ISBN 978-0-252-04955-2 hard ¥24,684.- (税込) US$ 110.00
ISBN 978-0-252-08920-6 paper ¥5,597.- (税込) US$ 24.95

From her start as one of the youngest activists in US history, Pauline Newman helped shape the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) into a dominant force in industrial America. Cathryn J. Prince tells the story of a self-educated Jewish immigrant who dedicated herself to a legion of causes and lifelong battles against sexism and classism. Prince follows Newman's life from a youth split between Lithuania and New York City sweatshops to her work as an advisor to New Deal-era labor secretary Francis Perkins. Newman's long hours at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory informed her entree into labor activism. In the following years, she tirelessly advocated for workers, ran for New York Secretary of State as a socialist, and became the first woman to serve as the ILGWU general organizer. Her interest in the health of workers led to service on the Joint Board of Sanitary Control and a decades-long term as education director of the ILGWU health center. Membership in Eleanor Roosevelt's circle opened doors to government positions and advisory roles that continued into the postwar era. Prince also weaves in the details of Newman's fifty-year relationship with a woman, her struggles with her sexual identity, and her final years. Engaging and panoramic, For the Love of Labor is the first major biography of an important figure in labor and women's history.

急進派-労働者階級と近現代イギリスの形成
Andrews, Geoff, Radicals: The Working Classes and the Making of Modern Britain. 304 pp. 2026:4 (Yale U. Pr., US) <763-1367>
ISBN 978-0-300-26589-7 hard ¥8,976.- (税込) US$ 40.00

An authoritative and original history of the working classes and the British Left The political Left in Britain rose out of the Industrial Revolution, as the working classes emerged as the leading force in the call for social change. Their contributions extended widely to political representation, the birth of the Labour Party and women's suffrage, the autodidact tradition in adult education, and Britain's literary culture. Throughout subsequent decades, the working classes remained central to the British radical tradition. Geoff Andrews traces the history of the Left and the Labour Party through the ideas of leading thinkers, writers, educationalists, trade unionists, and politicians. Ranging from the Workers Educational Association to the General Strike and the Women's Liberation Movement, Andrews uncovers the voices of key figures. The first account of the Labour Party to put the working classes at the heart of its history, this fascinating book tells a wider story of their progressive contribution to British culture, politics, and the movements which have driven social change.

LaTour, Jane, Backroom Bargaining: Racketeering and Rebellion in New York City's Labor Unions. (Working Class in American History) 296 pp. 2026:3 (U. Illinois Pr., US) <763-1370>
ISBN 978-0-252-04951-4 hard ¥24,684.- (税込) US$ 110.00
ISBN 978-0-252-08916-9 paper ¥6,732.- (税込) US$ 30.00

Organized crime figures and their minions honeycombed unions while leadership instituted nepotism, salary padding, and other practices that undermined the well-being of the rank and file. But in New York City, groups of union members and their legal allies waged a years-long struggle against corruption and for better working conditions. Jane LaTour combines rich oral histories with research to take readers into the construction sites, power plants, and Merchant Marine ships where the dramas played out. Dissidents risked their livelihoods for a variety of reasons, from practical concerns like job security and safety to larger ideas like union democracy. LaTour examines the factors that allowed unchecked corruption and kept unions from living up to their potential. But she also tells the eyewitness stories of solidary and worker spirit that fueled the fight to retake labor power. A rare history of union corruption, Backroom Bargaining shines a light on worker campaigns to uphold fairness and equity in the workplace.

Grieve, Victoria W., Labor Journalism, Labor Feminism: Women at the Federated Press. (Working Class in American History) 265 pp. 2026:5 (U. Illinois Pr., US) <763-1071>
ISBN 978-0-252-04965-1 hard ¥24,684.- (税込) US$ 110.00
ISBN 978-0-252-08930-5 paper ¥6,283.- (税込) US$ 28.00

Founded in 1919, the Federated Press (FP) collected, compiled, and distributed news to America's labor and radical newspapers. Victoria M. Grieve focuses on the lives and work of four correspondents and staffers - Jessie Lloyd, Julia Ruuttila, Virginia Gardner, and Miriam Kolkin - to examine the impact of women at the FP and across the labor movement. These journalists wrote women into labor news by shedding light on essential issues like the need for equal pay and an end to discrimination. Their work increased women's visibility in unions and the workforce while revealing that not only class but gender and race shaped their on-the-job experiences. Grieve also examines labor feminism within the larger stories of links between the Old Left and New Left and the FP's pioneering role in articulating early iterations of intersectional feminism. A compelling portrait of four women and a movement, Labor Journalism, Labor Feminism looks at an essential labor press organization and profiles politically active, leftist women who created relationships, established networks, and worked for social change.
