Perhaps more than ever, we need to invest in the study of the causes and consequences of crises. Since its founding in 1975, the International Crisis Behavior (ICB) Project has aimed to better equip academics, policymakers, and the next generation of engaged citizens to make sense of why crises arise and how they can be more effectively managed and prevented. The ICB Project's data holdings consist of full-length qualitative case studies, along with an expanding range of quantitative datasets that include information regarding the characteristics of the states in crisis, crisis behavior, attempts at third-party crisis management, the role of nonstate actors, and the system-level context.

A Century of International Crisis Behavior summarizes the evolving patterns of international crisis behavior in the more than 500 cases cataloged since 1918, provides an accounting of the state of the scholarship to make sense of the patterns, and presents new findings that advance our understanding. Chapters are grouped according to their level of analysis: studies of systems, dyads, and states. The authors highlight what we have learned and what we have yet to learn regarding the prevention, escalation, and de-escalation of international crises.

This book focuses on the symbolic power of a talking filibuster. Since a true filibuster requires hours of standing and talking, it is physically grueling. While some talking filibusters obstruct the passage of undesirable bills and nominees, other aims may include publicizing an ignored issue, revising a bill, or forcing consideration of an otherwise dead bill. Moreover, filibustering can give voice to an unheard group that can coalesce and create a political movement, such as the libertarian posse that formed during Rand Paul's 2013 filibuster against drone killings or the feminist army that formed during Wendy Davis's filibuster against a Texas abortion bill that same year. This book is the first major analysis of British foreign policy in Colombia after the Second World War, demonstrating how the tools and technologies of British imperial control were commodified and exported to Latin America amid the growth of US hegemony in the region. It draws on newly declassified archival material and oral history interviews to show how the modern Anglo-Colombian relationship was constructed and maintained through security collaboration, which involved covert operations by MI6, the Information Research Department, and the Special Air Service (SAS). The goal was to improve the Colombian state's capacity to deal with common enemies such as guerrilla insurgencies and drugs traffickers and promote Britain's wider objectives of improving the climate for foreign investment, preserving capitalist stability, and maintaining a foothold in Latin America. This book therefore integrates Latin America into the history of Britain's post-colonial security operations, revealing how Britain's relations with Colombia were far more important than previously known and disrupting prevailing narratives surrounding US domination of the region.

This volume is part of?Decentring the History of Reading, a two-volume project that rethinks the history of reading from a Central European perspective. Focusing on sources and contexts often overlooked in Western European models, the case studies show how reading practices developed in a multilingual, politically contested, and institutionally regulated environment.
