In the early nineteenth-century United States, a number of architects began to see their profession as a higher calling. Even as architecture was increasingly subjected to the pressures of the market, these figures gave sermon-like public lectures that cast their work as a divinely informed task. They sought to elevate their profession beyond mere building or crass profit-seeking by portraying it as a force for moral and civic improvement.

Bryan E. Norwood tells the story of how a small group of architects built a profession amid the powerful forces of capitalism and religious faith in the antebellum United States. He explores how architects in rapidly growing coastal cities from Boston to New Orleans portrayed their role in the burgeoning-and later fracturing-republic, tracing the tension between the religiously informed historical vision of architecture that they preached in popular lectures and the market-based contractual approach to design work that they actually practiced. Norwood recasts professionalization as a web of daily practices rife with incoherence: not a clear-cut institutional form but a potent mixture of ambitions, ambivalences, and complaints.

Putting emotions and affects into conversation with the history of capitalism while considering the intersections of religion, race, and nationalism, Professing Architecture highlights the enduring contradictions between architecture's lofty aspirations and its material realities.

Charts the founding of the American Empire.

The Fourth Kingdom is the second volume in a series of books, The Personality of American Power, tracing the distinctive continuities in the American way of war and strategy-making. A handful of themes emerge: securing the continuity and legitimacy of the Anglo-American regime; grounding the use of state power in political principles and ideology; calculating security interests in a fully global geopolitical context; seeing the path to great-power status as leading to westward, transatlantic expansion; differing strategic views between the imperial frontier and the metropolis; and an ongoing contest between advocates of a "blue-water," maritime, "off-shore balancing" approach to both colonial and continental affairs and promoters of direct engagement to achieve a favorable great-power balance. Seeing the North American colonies as a developing "Fourth Kingdom" adds a new dimension to the dominant "three-kingdoms" historiography of the tumultuous Stuart and Cromwellian years. Between the founding of the Jamestown colony and the carving-out of "Penn's Woods" seven decades later, English settlers came to control the critical seaports of North America, all but excluding other European powers.

Cable Empires uncovers the hidden communications infrastructure that helped shape the international legal order. From submarine telegraph cables to the fiber-optic systems that underpin today's digital economy, global communication networks linked distant territories, reshaped knowledge, and transformed governance across empires, markets, and states. Cable networks unsettled conventional understandings of jurisdiction and sovereignty, while enabling new forms of political and economic power beyond territorial borders. At the same time, their construction and operation depended on Indigenous labor, resource extraction, corporate and state capital, territorial access, and international law. Bridging international law, history, and science and technology studies, Cable Empires offers a new account of how communications infrastructure and technology were intertwined with the development of the international legal order. In an era marked by struggles over digital sovereignty and geopolitical rivalry, it offers insight into the material and historical foundations of contemporary power and the legal arrangements that sustain them.

This book explores the radicalization and fascistization of the Ustasa-The Croatian Revolutionary Organization within the interwar Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and later Yugoslavia, whose tumultuous rise led to terrorism and racial cleansing throughout the western Balkans.

Using an interdisciplinary and socio-cultural approach, Constantin Iordachi and Goran Miljan trace the Ustasa's political trajectory from its ideological and organizational roots in the 1920s, to its guerrilla struggle and terrorist activities in the 1930s, to its genocidal rule, violent downfall, and post-1945 metamorphosis in exile.

By considering the paramount role played by prejudice, economic deprivation, and the breakdown of social institutions in fueling grievances against an existing socio-political system, the authors place the emergence of the Ustasa in the context of the interwar Kingdom of Yugoslavia but also in the wider perspective of the emergence of fascist movements and regimes in interwar and wartime Europe.

The longest-running oil-producing region in Texas, the Permian Basin fueled the state's transformation from agricultural backwater to extractive powerhouse in the middle of the twentieth century. During the same period, Texas was also a crucial outlier in a national trend that placed risk management and environmental safety in the hands of state regulators. This book shows how Permian Basin oil production reshaped Texas's environment, economy, and political culture, with major consequences for American understandings of health, wealth, and the social safety net.

Sarah Stanford-McIntyre argues that the energy industry naturalized the risks of extractive capitalism, redefining what sorts and levels of danger were seen as acceptable. She traces how West Texas oil employers and employees-prospectors, bankers, roughnecks, drillers, contractors, and engineers-encountered and assessed the industry's many overlapping risks, demonstrating why different groups prioritized immediate economic concerns over long-term public health or the environment. Energy workers and communities often saw environmental and health hazards as inherent and unavoidable, believing that risk could be managed on economic terms. For the industry, risk became a language for justifying deregulation, contamination, and neglect. Bringing together the political, environmental, and business history of West Texas with the lived experience of workers in the energy industries, Natural Risk reveals how Permian Basin oil transformed American capitalism.

This is the only large-scale standalone edition of Odyssey XI in English. Other commentators have covered it as part of multi-volume editions covering the entire epic. They have thus given far less space to detail than does the current work where practically every other word calls for some kind of comment. Odyssey XI deals with Odysseus' visit to the world of the dead. It thus calls for a great deal of elucidation of material from the spheres of religion, myth, and genealogy. No other edition in any language goes into this kind of detail, and certainly not in English. Moreover, the editor's approach is to pay close attention to the interplay of past and present in the making of Homeric poetry. This involves not only attention to traditional referentiality but also explorations of how older meanings of words can linger in a tradition and show up in phraseology in ways that cast light on the deeper history of the Indo-European poetic tradition. As one might expect from earlier works by the same editor, close attention is paid throughout to matters of religion. In the same way, this book concentrates on linguistic details of all kinds that call for comment in a language such as Homeric Greek which can seem deceptively simple on account of its paratactic syntax but which is, on any view, rather tricky in its details.

This book is the sequel to Kathleen M. Byrd's 2024 study, Natchitoches, Louisiana, 1803-1840: A Creole Community on the American Frontier. Picking up the story in the 1840s and taking it through the Civil War, Byrd shows in this volume the economic activities of not only the planters and their enslaved workers but also the upland farmers, tradesmen, merchants, and others during the 1840s and 1850s. She then discusses how the disastrous Civil War created challenges for all those living on the home front.

Using the Phanor Prudhomme plantation, located down Cane River from the town of Natchitoches, as a case study, Byrd provides a portrait of life on a Louisiana cotton farm in the years just before the Civil War. Although cotton was the primary cash crop in Natchitoches during this period, most residents were not part of a planter household. Many farmers adopted other strategies, such as mixed-crop farming and herding, to sustain their families. Some small farmers were slaveholders; most were not. They were nonetheless complicit in maintaining slavery, either through renting enslaved people or by striving to become slaveholders themselves.
Byrd shows that the town of Natchitoches served as the economic and social center of the area, a place where larger merchants had stores, wealthy planters had townhouses, and the Catholic diocese had its cathedral and seminary. It was the parish seat with a courthouse, lawyers, and associated government officials, as well as doctors, druggists, and hotel keepers. The town had a newspaper and a racetrack, where the Natchitoches Jockey Club held its annual races.

White residents of Natchitoches were well informed about national developments. After the 1860 presidential election, most men in town voted against immediate secession, but they changed their stance when the Civil War began. Their enthusiasm for the Confederacy ebbed, however, as the war dragged on. The war reached Natchitoches Parish when the Union army invaded the Red River Valley and occupied Natchitoches. Foraging activities by both Union and Confederate soldiers left the town and countryside devastated, while enslaved laborers used the chaos of war to seek freedom.

In June 1968, a twenty-four-year-old Palestinian immigrant named Sirhan B. Sirhan assassinated Senator Robert F. Kennedy, marking yet another killing in a decade haunted by political violence. As he was being subdued, Sirhan shouted, "I can explain. I did it for my country," by which he meant Palestine. On trial, he testified that his motives included opposition to Zionism, with particular anger directed toward Kennedy because of the senator's call for arms sales to Israel. Despite Sirhan's confessions, the significance of the Arab-Israeli conflict to the slaying largely escaped notice-or was actively obscured.

I Did It for My Country is a revelatory account of Sirhan and the political dimensions of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. It illuminates Sirhan's Palestinian background, war-torn childhood, and experience of displacement, considering to what extent trauma contributed to his mental health problems. Michael R. Fischbach uncovers how prominent actors-from the United States and Middle Eastern governments to Jewish and Arab American groups-deliberately depoliticized the assassination by downplaying Sirhan's grievances about American support for Israel. He also examines why US authorities investigated possible Arab co-conspirators and explores how Palestinians understood Sirhan's action, as well as how Sirhan has maintained his Palestinian nationalism during his decades in prison. Drawing on in-depth archival research-including FBI and CIA documents-this book pinpoints a missed opportunity to consider how US foreign policy could affect domestic security.

Why do the most powerful men in the West wear sober, understated attire? Until the "Great Masculine Renunciation" in the eighteenth century, luxurious and often flamboyant clothing signaled social superiority for men as well as women.

Margaret Waller's fresh account of this historic recalibration of gender and class centers on an unlikely pair: Napoleon Bonaparte, the Corsican upstart who crowned himself emperor of France, and Pierre Antoine Le Boux La Mesangere, the defrocked priest who became Europe's premier fashion editor. Looking at knee breeches, schoolboy and officer uniforms, priests' robes, and imperial regalia, this book shows how misogyny and homophobia helped make Bonaparte, La Mesangere, and their peers men.

Napoleon's Closet shows when male fashion editors first associated women with fashion and urged men to renounce "feminine" frivolity in their dress. It connects French revolutionaries' masculinist construction of citizenship to the Church's long-standing requirement that its rank and file wear plain, modest clothing. It demonstrates that although Napoleon's reinstitution of sumptuous uniforms for men might seem the exception, he reserved for himself the modern male privilege of dressing down.

A lively and unorthodox exploration of the paradoxical history of male clothing, this book unveils the origins of modern ideas about normative masculinity, queerness, and "the closet."

Pardons is an unprecedented history of the pardon power, chronicling how British monarchs and American presidents have wielded clemency to afford mercy, reconcile societies, and exert executive supremacy. The book traces the pardon power from its origins as an attribute of absolute monarchy to its adoption by the American Framers as one of the few enumerated powers of the president of the United States. It tells the stories, human and political, of all forty-five presidents who have wielded the pardon power and of those they pardoned. The book argues that the increasing abuse of presidential clemency and the effective elimination of impeachment and criminal prosecution as constraints on presidential misconduct have made the pardon power a threat to the rule of law. To address this growing danger, Pardons calls for presidential pardon powers to be eliminated or transferred to Congress by constitutional amendment.

A history of the battles over regulation of hate speech in the United States.

The United States has no hate speech laws; hate speech is generally considered to be free speech under the First Amendment. In this crisp guided history, acclaimed legal historian Samantha Barbas chronicles the country's legal and cultural battles over the regulation of hate speech in the last hundred years. Charting the historical context for current debates, she ultimately argues that, however emotionally appealing they may seem, hate speech laws undermine civil rights and democracy.

The American policy on hate speech evolved from influences such as the civil rights movement, which contended that the most effective way to combat hate speech wasn't through proposed laws. Rather than imposing restrictions, the US has developed an array of mechanisms other than law, including counterspeech and public education, that have been relatively effective at dealing with hate speakers and hate groups. Though not perfect, our method of addressing hate is less dangerous than government censorship and less likely to be weaponized against the powerless.

This volume features some of the most controversial and topical science writing of the period. Investigations of the human body led to vexed debates about the nature and origins of life - materialism vs. spiritualism. Anatomical studies demonstrated humans' likeness to other mammals; these, combined with studies of fossil bones of extinct creatures, led to theories of evolution that laid the groundwork for Charles Darwin; they also led to arguments about the origins and development of racial difference, some of which proved historically dangerous in that they lent authority to racist assumptions about the supposed inferiority of people of colour.

Before Ruth Bader Ginsburg persuaded the Supreme Court to strike down sex discrimination, Dorothy Kenyon built the legal blueprint.

Justice Was Her Calling is the first full-length biography of the New York judge, lawyer, and civil liberties champion whose litigation strategies helped transform the equal protection clause into a powerful tool for women's rights. Across decades, from the Progressive Era through the New Deal and into the rise of second-wave feminism, Dorothy Kenyon stood at the forefront of reform.

A longtime ACLU national board member, the only woman appointed by the League of Nations to study women's legal status worldwide, and a US delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, she pushed equality onto the global stage long before it was widely embraced. Her career was nearly undone when Senator Joseph McCarthy named her the first alleged communist. Though fully cleared, the accusation cast a lasting shadow.

Drawing on letters, speeches, and fresh archival research, Jennifer L. Brinkley restores Kenyon to her rightful status as a legal pioneer and reminds us that civil liberties endure only when defended.

This book explores relations between medicine and empire in the Roman world. It charts Rome's accumulation of medical resources in the Republic, bound up with the acquisition of territory and power, and then reveals the redistribution of those resources as part of the larger project of imperial consolidation after Augustus. It demonstrates the ways in which medicine - ideas and practices around health, disease and healing - supported the Roman imperial enterprise. From the medical care of large enslaved workforces and Roman armies to the hierarchies of medical practitioners in communities across the empire and the ordering of health and bodies. Rome was the medical and political capital of the Mediterranean. It was also the disease capital, and the integration of imperial territory by the second century CE not only established a unified (but not uniform) medical culture but also helped the spread of disease, culminating in the Antonine Plague.

Many have observed that support for reactionary politics often arises from a sense of loss. But how do liberals themselves respond to losing power? And can their attempts to navigate loss fuel the very illiberal forces they wish to contain? Alec Dinnin's The Liberalism of Loss tackles these questions by examining how the end of the Spanish Empire affected the ideas of Spain's most famous liberal philosopher, Jose Ortega y Gasset (1883^-^1955). Through engagement with untranslated writings including unpublished archival material, Dinnin argues that anxieties over imperial loss animated Ortega's liberalism and informed his famous liberal critiques of mass democracy and totalitarianism. But the book also shows that Ortega's attempt to reimagine liberalism in order to escape from the ruins of empire inadvertently left a deep and lasting mark on the founding ideologues of Spanish fascism. Situating Ortega's political thought within the shadow of imperial loss and tracing its influence on the reactionary movements of his time, The Liberalism of Loss reveals how the line between liberal and fascist ideology can blur when both are committed to reviving political hierarchy. As such, the book not only illuminates the potential depths of liberalism's dependency upon empire, but also highlights the enduring dangers of responding to crises of imperial loss without confronting the legitimacy of empire itself.

These areas of enquiry were related in the period: the chemical changes produced by heat were the subject of intense investigation in an effort to provide a comprehensive account of why and how substances combined. Priestley's isolation of gases was made under the aegis of a phlogiston theory; this was superseded by Lavoisier's caloric theory, which was in turn undermined by Davy's discovery of chlorine's role in reactions. New gases were discovered - oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide; photosynthesis was postulated; infrared and ultraviolet rays were detected. The Voltaic pile was a spectacular instrument for harnessing electricity - Davy used it to decompose substances, reveal unknown elements, and show that substances were bonded by electrochemical forces. Dalton codified the operation of these forces - and the structure of matter - in his atomic theory. Meanwhile Herschel, when not detecting infra red, was observing previously invisible points of light in the heavens with improved telescopes, while Young was proposing a wave theory of light. Towards the end of the period, Oersted and then Faraday began the pioneering work on electromagnetism that changed understanding of the interaction of forces and enabled the construction of the electric motor.

This was the heroic period of plant collection: Europeans now had the means to collect and study flora and fauna from all over the world; they also developed classificatory systems that allowed them to create universal schema for plant reproduction and animal organization. This was also the period in which geology came of age (and acquired its name) as studies of strata enabled the earth to be understood as millions of years old - undermining Biblical authority (and again laying the basis of theories of evolution). The rocks revealed vast forces folding, faulting and eroding the land over eons; they also yielded fossils that were now used as keys to dating and that demonstrated that whole species had become extinct, again undermining biblical teaching.

This volume draws together texts revealing the increased and varied roles that science played in society at large, beyond the laboratory, the learned society and the scientific journal. Women's science writing, sampled here, was often professedly designed to educate a lay - usually female - readership. The emphasis was less on new discovery than on clear explanation, often in form of dialogue between a young woman and instructor. It became very successful, initiating a genre of popular science writing that continues to this day. It helped to establish the figure of the 'scientist' (a figure first named in this period) as a man of authority. Davy and Coleridge raised him to the level of a master of nature; Babbage called for his - and science's - professionalization and institutional support. Whewell and Herschel established disciplinary boundaries and defined methodology and proper limits of enquiry (in face of fears that science was usurping religious belief). This was the period in which science became institutionalized and professionalized, with the founding of the Medical Pneumatic Institution by Beddoes-Britain's first medical research establishment, of the Royal Institution by Rumford and others (where Davy and Faraday would make momentous discoveries) and of the Mechanics' Institutes by Brougham and others (where science and technology would be disseminated to working men). Working men were, by the 1830s, often 'mechanics'-engineers-in mills, factories and forges, in what Carlyle defined as an age of machinery and mechanisms. The impact of mechanization - steam engines, power looms, threshing machines - was enormous, radically altering human society and the natural world, bringing about today's world of mass, globalized industry, rapid travel, standardized production, and rapacious exploitation of the earth.

Interrogating the notion of medical knowledge and public health practices in colonial India, this volume explores the complex encounters between Western medical systems and indigenous healing traditions during British rule. The book examines how colonial medical institutions functioned as instruments of both care and control, while indigenous practices retained their relevance among the masses. Through detailed case studies including W.M. Haffkine's plague vaccine campaigns, the Rockefeller Foundation's public health interventions, and the evolution of medical research under colonial constraints, the book reveals the multifaceted nature of medical encounters at various sites between 1820 and 1920. The analysis extends to examining the Indian Medical Gazette as a mirror reflecting contemporary medical debates, the contours of medical research in a colonial laboratory, and comparative perspectives from other colonies in Southeast Asia and East Africa. The work demonstrates how medical knowledge became a contested terrain where scientific advancement, colonial politics, and indigenous resistance intersected.

This book will be of significant interest to historians of medicine, colonial studies scholars, public health professionals, sociologists, and policy planners seeking to understand the historical foundations of contemporary medical systems in South Asia. It offers valuable insights for postgraduate students and researchers in medical history, colonial history, public health, and South Asian studies.

How definitions of childhood in early America codified social hierarchies and remain with us today

As of 2025, in the United States an eleven-year-old child can be charged with a federal crime while in many states it's illegal to leave a twelve-year-old home alone. Twenty-six states allow children younger than sixteen to marry while the legal drinking age remains twenty-one. Are these age-based laws really protecting children, and if not, why do they exist? Holly N.S. White uncovers the answers to these questions through a history of America's first age-based laws.

Analyzing trial records, newspapers, personal letters and diaries, as well as legal statutes from the founding era to the Civil War, White shows how restrictive age-based laws were implemented to benefit those who already held power. Over time, these new laws-coming out of child murder and rape trials as well as guardianship and underage marriage disputes-increasingly circumscribed the rights of young Americans in the early republic. As White shows, race, class, status, and gender influenced who came to benefit from the label of "child" in post-revolutionary America. In so doing, Constructing American Childhood explains why Americans continue to be guided by the age-based legal definitions of childhood and adulthood of our past.

Retelling the story of the largest group murder trial in American history-that of the 110 Black soldiers convicted by court-martial in the aftermath of the so-called Houston Riot of 1917-The Making of the Houston Martyrs uncovers the meaning of justice in a time of war. In centering the ambiguities and contradictions of this case, the book grapples with larger struggles over police and military authority and jurisdiction as manifested in three relationships between prisons and policing in wartime: the consolidation and normalization of military control over civilians, the scripted use of police-military authority in the quelling of American race riots, and the crosscurrents of military imprisonment as part of the legacy of domestic policing and punishment in the United States. The Making of the Houston Martyrs widens the historical lens of prison and police studies to account for different forms of legal status produced in war and normalized in peace, telling an abolitionist history of state punitive power and its reflections in American political thought.

Even as scandals over the US military's domestic surveillance of civilians continue to surface today, Eyes in the Shadows reveals how this monitoring of citizens began more than a century ago. In this new origin story of the US surveillance state, Alexandre Rios-Bordes returns to the First World War, when two modest intelligence services-the Military Intelligence Division and the Office of Naval Intelligence-began spying on civilians. The book shows why and how this practice continued in peacetime, drawing the armed forces into the ongoing monitoring of the population. What processes and practices determine who warrants surveillance? What does it mean for a state to turn against certain citizens and groups and cast them as enemies? To answer these questions, Eyes in the Shadows describes surveillance in the making, immersing readers inside secretive organizations and showing how they operate-from collecting field data to writing reports and analyzing threats. The book offers unprecedented insight into the mechanisms of military vigilance, the shadow of which still looms over the present.
