This open access book shows how the history of experience can be studied. Starting with the question of how past experiences can be traced, the volume explores how historical sources-from egodocuments to statistics and fiction-can reveal past realities in new ways. Accessible yet methodologically advanced, it offers historians and students alike a fresh toolkit for exploring human experience and expanding their research methods.

This book traces the development of May Day, a demonstration and annual celebration of internationalism, unity, and peace for the labour movement and working class. Also known as International Workers' Day or Labour Day, May Day has been observed globally on 1st May since 1890. Focusing on three key sites-London, Melbourne, and New York-the book highlights May Day's interconnected local and international character. Comparing demonstrations across these cities, the author shows how May Day evolved locally while developing across the Anglosphere, revealing the labour movement's constitution, strength, ideals, and objectives.

Although rooted in internationalism, May Day was shaped by each city's socio-economics, labour politics, working-class culture, and urban environment. Alongside these local expressions emerged an idealised May Day drawing on traditional, seasonal, pagan, and medieval imagery shared across the Anglosphere. Examining the internationalism articulated on May Day, the book connects collective identity, socialism, and the working class in opposition to capitalism and imperialism. It also highlights the transnational influence of socialist artwork and poetry, featuring extensive pieces by Walter Crane, works by William Morris, and contributions from other artists.

Finally, the book explores how traditional May Day customs informed labour demonstrations and shaped participants' understandings of them. Through a comprehensive cultural analysis of the labour movement, it offers insights into how working-class celebrations, demonstrations, artwork, and stories expressed their values and struggles. It is a valuable resource for historians of transnational labour movements, cultural and intellectual history, global urban history, and memory studies.

This volume is part of Decentring the History of Reading, a two-volume project that rethinks the history of reading from a Central European perspective. Focusing on overlooked sources and contexts, it examines how reading practices evolved under conditions of political upheaval, ideological control, and media transformation. Covering the late 1940s to the present, the contributions explore reading under authoritarian regimes, state socialism, and post-socialist transition. Not Dreaming: Martin Luther King Jr's Critique of America seeks to deepen the American public's understanding of its most famous African American protest leader. Prince Rivers is one of the most consequential Americans about whom Americans know nothing. Born enslaved near Beaufort, South Carolina, Rivers's flight to freedom on horseback in November 1861 became legendary during his lifetime. One of the first Black men in Union uniform and one of the longest-serving men in the Union army, Rivers was integral to the formation of the United States Colored Troops. He astounded his own officers with his speed, strength, stamina, and impeccable manners. "If there should ever be a black monarchy in South Carolina," noted his colonel, "[Rivers] will be its king." True to this prediction, Rivers went on to serve as a South Carolina state legislator and as one of the first Black mayors in the United States. From his seat in Hamburg, South Carolina, Rivers became known as "The Black Prince" and "The Power of Aiken County" as he presided over one of the most successful experiments in interracial democracy this country has ever known. This study focuses on five cities which would become the first dioceses in the United States: Baltimore, Boston, Bardstown, Philadelphia, and New York. In some cities, bishops took a great interest in music: Cheverus in Boston and David in Bardstown, for example. In other cities, it was the laity who took control, notably in Philadelphia.

With the exception of Philadelphia, no semblance of a Catholic musical culture in Britain's American colonies has come down to us in any documented or retrievable form. Yet as soon as independence was achieved, Rome recognized an American Church in the appointment of John Carroll. Under his inspiration, developing Catholic musical culture became an important priority in many different areas of the new country.

It is a fascinating period in American Catholic history where women composers, organists, and conductors could be found working side by side with their male counterparts in the cities of Boston and Baltimore while plainchant could be heard from the forests of northern Maine to the wilderness of Kentucky. Yet it was also becoming a period of rapid change. The flow of Catholic immigrants and the growth of the commercial musical press gently moved their musical culture toward more popular styles with a more devotional content.

This book traces the forgotten history of a Japanese farm settlement in the Sacramento River delta. Before the wartime removal and incarceration, most West Coast Japanese Americans, including immigrant Issei and US-born Nisei generations, resided in rural agricultural areas. Existing histories of Japanese America have often overlooked this farming aspect of their experience, focusing instead on urban narratives. Centered on the town of Walnut Grove, the "downriver" (kawashimo) settlement was home to Issei farmers, merchants, and laborers who lived alongside their Nisei children in a society characterized by strict racial segregation and landlessness. In the delta basin, a small group of white landowning settlers and corporate interests held power and wealth, shaping social relations and economic opportunities for mostly Asian immigrant settlers and fieldhands.

Combining theories of settler colonialism, racial capitalism, and immigrant transnationalism with the techniques of microhistory, Eiichiro Azuma reveals the intricate dynamics of paternalistic interdependency between white landlords and Japanese tenants, as well as the complex interethnic relations among marginalized immigrant groups in the local segregated society and agricultural economy. Through his careful analysis of heretofore overlooked immigrant vernacular sources and oral histories, Azuma sheds important light on a lesser-known aspect of rural Asian American history through the lens of multiracial entanglements on the ground.

American pop culture loves newsies. The children who bawled out headlines and sold newspapers on city streets in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been depicted countless times in movies, Broadway shows, books, music, and more, but somehow it's only ever the stories of newsboys that are told. Scholarly literature too has focused mostly on boy newsies. Yet for nearly as long as there were newspapers in the United States, there were also newsgirls. Girl newsies were photographed, interviewed, studied, argued over, and eventually absorbed into the collective "newsboys" and forgotten.

Extra! Extra! A History of America's Girl Newsies offers a corrective, demonstrating the importance of newsgirls as early news workers and as symbols of child labor and gender reform efforts. Sometimes younger than ten years old and from impoverished families, girl newsies were already vulnerable to exploitation from the newspaper publishing industry, which relied heavily on child labor during the "golden age" of journalism. However, the newsgirls of this period contributed much to news labor, and they were important to the discussions concerning childhood, child labor reform, and women's changing societal roles. Properly integrating newsgirls into the history of newsies dismantles archetypes and enables a deeper understanding of child news labor.

The first book ever on how the press covered the Gettysburg campaign, From Blood to Ink chronicles the rise of the press through the Civil War and how its coverage of Gettysburg not only misled the people of two warring factions but also misshaped the battle's meaning for generations to come. As Matthew J. Larson reveals, newsmen on both sides transformed the battle into what they needed it to be rather than what it truly was. While the Northern press elevated Gettysburg into America's Waterloo, the Southern press polished it into another hard-won success for Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Indigenous nations shaped Alaska's destiny before-and long after-Russia or America claimed the region

Alaska's past is often told through Russian and US imperial histories. In The Great Land author Thomas Michael Swensen overturns those narratives by reconstructing Alaska's history from Indigenous perspectives, showing how Native communities forged the region's political, economic, and cultural foundations. He constructs a timeline based on Indigenous archives, oral traditions, and Native-authored sources-what he terms first space.

Beginning with Indigenous encounters with Russian expeditions in Unangan territory in the 1740s, Swensen traces how key features of modern Alaska emerged from Indigenous labor and knowledge.
