This Element highlights the coastal and island communities of the central Mediterranean as key actors in long-distance exchange networks with the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean during the Bronze Age. It presents a dynamic, interconnected landscape of people, goods, and ideas, emphasising multidirectional and multiscalar interactions and their impact on exchange and social identities. Organised thematically, geographically, and chronologically, it offers accessible insights for both specialists and non-specialists, combining detailed archaeological evidence with critical interpretation. The Element underscores the role of local conditions in shaping long-distance Bronze Age exchange networks and fostering social and cultural connections across the Mediterranean, opening fresh perspectives on exchange and identity.

Our Land tells the story of black Southerners who gained ownership of land and farmed it throughout the era of Jim Crow. Drawing on a new oral history collection and archival research, Adrienne M. Petty and Mark R. Schultz analyze over 300 interviews with farmers and their descendants to better understand how so many rural black families became farm owners despite the considerable odds stacked against them. How did landownership affect their experience of the Jim Crow era? Why did their aspiration for land persist for as long as it did despite the shifting fortunes of farming? And how did acquiring land shape the futures of their descendants? Landownership often allowed these farmers to put down roots and claim a place as their own. It gave them greater control over their own children's labor, which they often used to invest in education. More often than with tenant farmers, landowners' children completed high school, and their grandchildren completed college. This education later bore fruit for many men and women, as they left the farms and sought urban professional or business careers, laying the foundation for the black middle class of today. Although the limited pathways to landownership during this time hardly delivered guarantees of economic security, Petty and Schultz show that the most prosperous members of the landowning class supported institutions that benefited their communities. This book unearths the epic struggle of southern black farmers and reveals that land imbued them with at least the semblance, no matter how fleeting, of independence.

Censorship is the dark side of historical writing. Because much censorship is shrouded in secrecy, the subject tends to stay outside mainstream histories of historical writing. Consequently, many such histories offer unduly optimistic accounts of historical writing. They assume that historians produced their works in a political vacuum. This view is challenged here through an examination of the post-1945 censorship of history and its entanglement with power and freedom. This Element can be explored in three ways. The main overview discusses the international standards on freedom of expression, the demarcation debates on censorship, and the problems in tracing it; it also reviews censorship's reasons, key players, and effects. Furthermore, a dozen spotlights present significant themes or patterns of censorship. Finally, a glossary locates the concepts related to the censorship of history within the broader network of terms related to the freedom of expression about the past.

A critical read for exploring the discursive links to the origins of fascist and antifascist rhetoric in the United States

Becoming Loyal Americans
is a study of the Italian American movement during the Second World War to reclassify not only the status of alien enemy but also the perception of the ethnic community as singularly loyal to the United States. The book argues that the anti-fascist actors at the helm of this movement, although seeking liberative ends to lift discriminatory wartime legislation and defeat Benito Mussolini, reproduced fascist political myths to realize movement success. These political myths, in turn, were appropriated by the Roosevelt administration to secure the ethnic bloc's continued wartime support. Cucchiara considers the implications of this discourse's legacy for the ethnic community and the American body politic, as these political myths, no matter how reworked to fit an emancipatory framework, were carriers of narrative elements steeped in a history of domination and violence. The resultant opened the possibility for these political myths to be mined by future actors, regardless of ethnic background, to realize illiberal ends.

Becoming Loyal Americans is the first book on the reclassification movement. It provides a fresh perspective and original insight into debates within Italian American studies, regarding wartime identity, the continued utility and appeal of a fascist imaginary, and the strength of ancestral ties to Italy. This book also presents a timely account of the implications of divisive political discourse and policies for people with roots in nations that the American government deems the 'enemy'. It engages with questions that are as relevant then, as they are now, regarding the construction of ethnic and civic identity for alienated groups, the forging of dual commitments within discriminatory legislative and discursive constraints, and the channels by which immigrant and ethnic communities navigate affiliations, affections, forms of patriotism, and a sense of civic duty to the United States and their respective countries of origins.

This book traces the development of May Day, a demonstration and annual celebration of internationalism, unity, and peace for the labour movement and working class. Also known as International Workers' Day or Labour Day, May Day has been observed globally on 1st May since 1890. Focusing on three key sites-London, Melbourne, and New York-the book highlights May Day's interconnected local and international character. Comparing demonstrations across these cities, the author shows how May Day evolved locally while developing across the Anglosphere, revealing the labour movement's constitution, strength, ideals, and objectives.

Although rooted in internationalism, May Day was shaped by each city's socio-economics, labour politics, working-class culture, and urban environment. Alongside these local expressions emerged an idealised May Day drawing on traditional, seasonal, pagan, and medieval imagery shared across the Anglosphere. Examining the internationalism articulated on May Day, the book connects collective identity, socialism, and the working class in opposition to capitalism and imperialism. It also highlights the transnational influence of socialist artwork and poetry, featuring extensive pieces by Walter Crane, works by William Morris, and contributions from other artists.

Finally, the book explores how traditional May Day customs informed labour demonstrations and shaped participants' understandings of them. Through a comprehensive cultural analysis of the labour movement, it offers insights into how working-class celebrations, demonstrations, artwork, and stories expressed their values and struggles. It is a valuable resource for historians of transnational labour movements, cultural and intellectual history, global urban history, and memory studies.

The ancient Greek world consisted of approximately 1,000 autonomous polities scattered across the Mediterranean basin and was remarkable for both its diversity and its uniformity. As Greeks dispersed throughout the Mediterranean, the different environmental and human ecosystems they encountered created important differences among widely scattered settlements: each Greek community developed its own unique set of socio-political institutions and social practices. Nonetheless, despite their dispersal and diversity, Greek communities were bound together by a network of commercial, cultural, diplomatic, and military ties and shared important commonalities, most notably language and religion. The Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World, a collaborative effort by more than forty eminent scholars, offers twenty-one detailed and comprehensive studies of key sites from across the Greek world in the period between c. 750 and c. 480 BCE. During that period, Greeks confronted a series of demographic, political, social, and economic challenges and generated an array of responses that transformed the ways in which they lived, worked, and interacted. Much of what is now seen as distinctive about Greek culture--such as democracy, stone temples, and nude athletics--first developed during the Archaic period. The series is organized alphabetically by polis. Volume V contains detailed and up-to-date studies of Miletus, Northwestern Greece, and Olympia. Together with the other volumes in the series, The Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World offers a new and unique resource for the study of ancient Greece that will transform how we understand a crucial era in antiquity.

Explores the great diversity of Catholic people and musical styles in the early American Republic from the wilderness of Maine, through the bustling cities of Boston to Baltimore, among immigrants from France and Haiti, to the rolling hills of Kentucky.

As the first comprehensive look at Early American Catholic musical culture, The Wilderness and Cities Raise Their Voices provides a broader perspective than earlier studies of specific hymn collections. It thereby opens a new vista into the variety of Catholic music in the young nation. Rather than focusing simply on repertoire, this is the first study of Catholic musical culture between the years of 1783 and 1830.

This study focuses on five cities which would become the first dioceses in the United States: Baltimore, Boston, Bardstown, Philadelphia, and New York. In some cities, bishops took a great interest in music: Cheverus in Boston and David in Bardstown, for example. In other cities, it was the laity who took control, notably in Philadelphia.

With the exception of Philadelphia, no semblance of a Catholic musical culture in Britain's American colonies has come down to us in any documented or retrievable form. Yet as soon as independence was achieved, Rome recognized an American Church in the appointment of John Carroll. Under his inspiration, developing Catholic musical culture became an important priority in many different areas of the new country.

It is a fascinating period in American Catholic history where women composers, organists, and conductors could be found working side by side with their male counterparts in the cities of Boston and Baltimore while plainchant could be heard from the forests of northern Maine to the wilderness of Kentucky. Yet it was also becoming a period of rapid change. The flow of Catholic immigrants and the growth of the commercial musical press gently moved their musical culture toward more popular styles with a more devotional content.

Not Dreaming: Martin Luther King Jr's Critique of America seeks to deepen the American public's understanding of its most famous African American protest leader. While Americans venerate MLK as great orator who dreamed of a world free of racism, most are unfamiliar with King's penetrating and radical social criticism. Not Dreaming reveals that MLK spoke and wrote extensively about what he termed the "triple evils" afflicting the U.S.: racism, militarism, and the extreme materialism that yielded vast economic inequality. These flaws that plagued America in MLK's lifetime persist in twenty-first century America, giving a striking contemporary relevance to King's social criticism. His democratic vision of an America that embraced non-violence, valued people over profits, abolished poverty, rejected war, and broke with its white supremacist past is one our nation badly needs to reconsider. Not Dreaming offers us MLK not merely as a historical figure but as a critic whose ideas can help twenty-first century America become a more just, humane, and democratic society.

This third volume of The Oxford History of Modern German Theology traces the dramatic reconfiguration of theology in the German-speaking world from the aftermath of the First World War to the end of the twentieth century. Across a century marked by political catastrophe, social upheaval, and ecclesial transformation, theology was repeatedly compelled to rethink its methods, institutions, and public role. Two world wars, the rise and fall of National Socialism, the Holocaust, the division and reunification of Germany, and the reforms of the Second Vatican Council reshaped not only European society but also the very conditions under which theology could speak. Bringing Protestant and Catholic developments into a single narrative, the volume follows theology through four pivotal periods: the ferment of the Weimar Republic, the crises of the Nazi regime, the work of postwar reconstruction, and the pluralistic and global landscape after Vatican II. Along the way, readers encounter dialectical theology, the Confessing Church, ressourcement, political and liberation theologies, new hermeneutical approaches, and the emergence of feminist and interreligious perspectives. Rather than presenting a sequence of great thinkers alone, the volume situates figures such as Karl Barth, Rudolf Bultmann, and Karl Rahner within the institutions, debates, and political pressures that shaped their work. The result is a richly contextualized history that shows theology not as an isolated intellectual enterprise but as a socially embedded practice continually responding to crisis, reform, and global exchange. Comprehensive, critical, and ecumenical in scope, this volume offers the most complete account to date of modern German theology's turbulent and transformative twentieth century.

A novel approach to the study of the past has been crystallizing in the last decade. Its practitioners are revisiting themes as varied as war, race, and trade by focusing on state and non-state relationships between actors from several empires, as opposed to studying empires in isolation. Just as nation-state studies have been balanced by global and transnational histories, transimperial history is now transforming the history of empires. This is the first book-length introduction to the fast-growing sub-field. Combining conceptual reflections with a historiographic state of the art, it bears on relations across empires around the modern world, from Africa and Asia to Europe and the Americas. Covering both societal and governmental actors, and arguing that power differences and their negotiations are central to transimperial relations, this work presents a comprehensive framework for doing modern transimperial history. It argues that this field has multiple genealogies, including global history, early modern connected history, and what one could call revisionist methodological imperialism. It identifies four overlapping facets of transimperial relationships: coexistence, intervention/counter-intervention, cooperation, and competition. It reflects on how imperial actors made historical and contemporary comparisons to construct identities and legitimize power. A chapter on power in and across empires offers reflections on despotic, infrastructural, bio-power, framing power, and counter-power. In chapters on spaces and times, the book analyses spatial fixity and/versus mobility and reflects on transimperial infrastructures, places, borderlands, and maritime spaces; explores how empires helped drive and exhibited multiple competing temporalities; and argues that a truly interconnected transimperial world crystallized around the 1860s/70s. A final chapter, on methods, explains why transimperial history requires strategic navigation of multiple historiographies, linguistic competencies, and sources. The book concludes that its scholarly interest aside, transimperial history is timely: it helps us reflect on our emerging multipolar world. A leading Catholic historian tells the fascinating story of how the Jesuits shaped the modern world

Since its founding by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the Society of Jesus-commonly known as the Jesuits-has played a critical role in the events of modern history.

In A Concise History of the Jesuits, Markus Friedrich, a leading historian of the Jesuits in academia, tells the story of the Society of Jesus from its founding to the papacy of Francis, the first Jesuit pope. Drawing on meticulous archival research and previous scholarship, he explores the profound societal impact of the Jesuits' humanist colleges, spiritual tradition, and global outreach-far beyond ecclesiastical boundaries. In fact, no other religious order has been more successful-or more contentious. Unlike other orders, the Jesuits do not wear distinctive clerical garments or reside in monasteries. Instead, they are educators, missionaries, and religious leaders. They formed a global network led by influential superiors general, while pledging unwavering obedience to the pope. Friedrich highlights their extraordinary cultural and intellectual contributions through their prominent roles in science, religion, missions, and politics.

A Concise History of the Jesuits illustrates the Jesuits' complicated and, at times, controversial history. Through this insightful introduction, readers interested in Catholicism and Jesuit history will gain a deeper understanding of the character and history of the Society of Jesus.

This book, in tribute to the late Paul A Levine, a pioneer in the field of Holocaust history, focuses on themes identified in international research as particularly important for advances in Holocaust history and education, such as the role of 'bystanders', foreign policy and diplomacy, the role of individual actors, and Holocaust education. It aims to re-evaluate previous findings in light of new research in these areas, which were also the focal points of Levine's research.

Recent decades have shown further advances in Holocaust research in terms of new perspectives and methodologies, which have enriched and broadened our understanding. For instance, the term 'bystander' has been refined into sub-categories and has increased our understanding of how roles changed over time and in different contexts. Furthermore, local studies have nuanced our understanding, and insights about the role of distance in time and space have deepened our knowledge of rescue opportunities. In bystander countries, research has primarily focused on refugee policy and the shift from a restrictive attitude in the 1930s and the first war years to a more generous policy towards the war's end. Scholars have placed the Jewish experience at the center, and recent research has explored the formation of Holocaust memory. This volume brings together contributors to produce new research in these areas and to articulate future directions for the field.

Nicholas D. Cross's The Roots of Cooperation reinterprets how the Greeks conceived, enacted, and displayed their alliances, offering a socially grounded understanding of interstate relations in antiquity. Following the international relations model of constructivism, Cross emphasizes the social features of Greek alliances including words used to articulate agreements, ceremonial acts they performed during the formation process, and the symbols they employed to illustrate how the alliances contributed to the creation of shared goals, ideas, and identities. The study covers the proposals for alliances, the articulation of alliance treaties, the ratification of alliances by means of religious ceremonies, the public display of the agreements in visual media, and the implications of terminated alliances. While alliances had political and military objectives, the Greeks represented them as collective and consensual achievements. Relying as much on epigraphic and numismatic evidence as on the literary record, this study recontextualizes interstate activity by analyzing how contemporaries imagined and depicted their formal interstate agreements. The Roots of Cooperation offers fresh insights that go beyond just alliances and can deepen our understanding of interstate relations, broadly speaking, in the ancient world.

History is never just about the past. It is a powerful resource used to shape public space, communities and relationships of power. In Narratives, Uses of History, and Power in Gonzales, Texas, 1900-1940, Anne Magnussen explores how a confrontation in 1835 between American immigrants and the Mexican army evolved from local history into the famous and powerful "Come and Take It" narrative used to promote business ambitions, define community values, and establish ethnoracial and social hierarchies.

Drawing on a rich array of sources-from newspapers, census records, maps, monuments, and organizational archives-Magnussen reveals how Anglo-Texans, Mexican-Texans, African-Texans, and German-Texans negotiated power, belonging, and identity in a rapidly changing society. As Gonzales confronted industrialization, immigration, racial segregation, economic crisis, and the Texas Centennial, historical narratives became tools for both inclusion and exclusion, legitimacy and resistance.

Far more than a local history, this book offers a case study of how communities use the past to shape their futures. It illuminates the complex relationships among memory, heritage, race, place, and power in Texas and the United States, while providing fresh insights into how historical narratives emerge, compete, and challenge each other over time.

A stolen child returns home, revealing colonial violence and the enduring power of Indigenous historiesMore than a century after her death at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Sophia-an Unangax? child taken from her home on Saint Paul Island, Alaska-finally returned to her community. This powerful book tells the story of that return and the histories it reveals. Centered on the rematriation of the author's great-aunt from Carlisle's cemetery to her homeland, the narrative traces the colonial systems that removed Indigenous children from their families and confined them in church- and government-run boarding schools.

Weaving archival research, family history, and community knowledge, Lauren M. Ayagakuchax? Peters demonstrates how Unangax? ways of doing history reshape the telling of the past. Rather than presenting a distant academic account, she foregrounds storytelling, Indigenous ethics, and relationships to land, family, and ancestors. Through these approaches, she exposes the structural inequities that enabled the seizure, incarceration, and burial of Indigenous children far from their homes.

At the same time, Sophia's Return offers a guide for communities seeking to bring their own children home from boarding school cemeteries. It documents the first rematriation project carried out with, by, and for Alaska Native communities connected to Carlisle, while situating that effort within longer histories of colonialism and Indigenous resilience.

Ultimately, the story of Sophia's return affirms a future grounded in cultural resurgence, community survival, and the enduring power of Indigenous knowledge.

Indigenous nations shaped Alaska's destiny before-and long after-Russia or America claimed the region

Alaska's past is often told through Russian and US imperial histories. In The Great Land author Thomas Michael Swensen overturns those narratives by reconstructing Alaska's history from Indigenous perspectives, showing how Native communities forged the region's political, economic, and cultural foundations. He constructs a timeline based on Indigenous archives, oral traditions, and Native-authored sources-what he terms first space.

Beginning with Indigenous encounters with Russian expeditions in Unangan territory in the 1740s, Swensen traces how key features of modern Alaska emerged from Indigenous labor and knowledge. The book demonstrates that after being drawn into coercive relationships with the Russian American Company, Native people navigated the territory's transfer to the United States in 1867 and engaged democratic institutions to pursue citizenship and political influence by the early twentieth century.

Across more than two and a half centuries, Alaska Native communities defined the region and state's cultural and political life-from designing the state flag to leading movements that culminated in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The book details that through statehood, Cold War tensions, and the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Indigenous people articulated cultural beliefs and practices that are central to Alaska's political life.

By framing Alaska as an Indigenous homeland rather than a colonial frontier, The Great Land offers a powerful new understanding of how Native peoples shaped the modern Alaskan state.

Scandinavia is a multiethnic zone of cultural contact on Europe's northwestern margins. This fact, when considered in the context of the region's very diverse environmental conditions, has established Scandinavia as an exceptional anthropological and historical laboratory for the study of general issues in human history. Indeed, Scandinavian archaeology was a pioneer in and remains a force in scientific archaeology. This is naturally a function of the region's rich prehistory and archaeological record, characterised by iconic sites and monuments, finds, and artefacts. The creation of a platform for exploring the past is linked to strong public support for the creation of exceptional museums, strong heritage legislation and management organisations, and dedicated academic institutions and training programmes. At an early stage, prehistoric archaeology instituted multidisciplinary practices, collaborating with the ecological and natural sciences, as well as anthropological and historical disciplines. The chapters that make up The Oxford Handbook of Scandinavian Archaeology to 1050 CE are written by a range of contemporary Scandinavian and international experts and explore the region's prehistory and archaeological practices. Authors have been selected not only for their expertise in the subject matter, but also to demonstrate the variability in theoretical and methodological approaches found in contemporary Scandinavian archaeology. The 83 chapters endeavour to present an up-to-date and comprehensive prehistory of the region from the Palaeolithic to the Viking Age, as well as discussion of the discipline's history and institutions, the region's diverse environmental conditions, important elements of interdisciplinary collaboration, and significant themes of research. Focusing on Norway, Sweden and Denmark, the book also contains chapters from Finland and the eastern Baltic, Iceland and Anglo-Saxon Ireland, Scotland, and Ireland. The Handbook provides a detailed, holistic overview of this astonishingly diverse field, and its chapters will be required reading for anyone interested in the history and heritage of the Nordic countries.

The first book ever on how the press covered the Gettysburg campaign, From Blood to Ink chronicles the rise of the press through the Civil War and how its coverage of Gettysburg not only misled the people of two warring factions but also misshaped the battle's meaning for generations to come. As Matthew J. Larson reveals, newsmen on both sides transformed the battle into what they needed it to be rather than what it truly was. While the Northern press elevated Gettysburg into America's Waterloo, the Southern press polished it into another hard-won success for Confederate General Robert E. Lee. In both cases, facts bent to bias, narrative eclipsed reality, and Gettysburg itself became the final casualty.

American pop culture loves newsies. The children who bawled out headlines and sold newspapers on city streets in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been depicted countless times in movies, Broadway shows, books, music, and more, but somehow it's only ever the stories of newsboys that are told. Scholarly literature too has focused mostly on boy newsies. Yet for nearly as long as there were newspapers in the United States, there were also newsgirls. Girl newsies were photographed, interviewed, studied, argued over, and eventually absorbed into the collective "newsboys" and forgotten.

Extra! Extra! A History of America's Girl Newsies offers a corrective, demonstrating the importance of newsgirls as early news workers and as symbols of child labor and gender reform efforts. Sometimes younger than ten years old and from impoverished families, girl newsies were already vulnerable to exploitation from the newspaper publishing industry, which relied heavily on child labor during the "golden age" of journalism. However, the newsgirls of this period contributed much to news labor, and they were important to the discussions concerning childhood, child labor reform, and women's changing societal roles. Properly integrating newsgirls into the history of newsies dismantles archetypes and enables a deeper understanding of child news labor.
