This book explores the Moroccan Rif and the city of Al Hoceima, combining local voices and ethnographic insights to provide a comprehensive and unique overview of the multifaceted dynamics of the Mediterranean region.

The focus of the book is on the society, culture, and people of the region, namely the Rifians. Throughout, their voices are interwoven with first-hand ethnographic data, geographical, ethnohistorical, and anthropological insights, as well as 100 photographs, giving the reader an in-depth understanding of Rifian society and culture. The book also considers other themes, including maritime and mountain economies, ecologies in times of climatic change, transregional entanglements, migration, and the tense relationship between the Rif's inhabitants and the Moroccan monarchy. This book places particular emphasis on the generation of young Rifians who took to the streets in 2016-17 after the tragic death of a fishmonger in Al Hoceima. After months of protests involving thousands of people, at times spreading to other cities in Morocco and as far as Europe, the Makhzen, the power elite that governs Morocco, eventually took back the stage and crushed the popular protest movement. Today, despite the apparent calm, the situation in the region remains tense beneath the surface.

Examining a wide range of topics related to the Rifians in northern Morocco, the book will appeal to anyone interested in the Mediterranean region, Middle Eastern society, and anthropology.

British Assam holds an important place in the history of the British Empire in South Asia. This is especially so in the context of colonial frontier- making. It is in this regard that the book examines what it culturally meant to be a hunter, peasant or rebel between the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries in the British Assam frontier. The book highlights that these figures are of conceptual significance. While the figures were of contrastive nature, the complexity of underlying relations through and in which British colonialism constituted and reproduced itself in Assam could be uncovered from a study of these contrastive figures. Using a wide spectrum of archival sources, the hunters' memoirs, the peasants' ballads and a rebel's worldview are examined as the cultural forms through which one can study these relations that generated the sense of colonial reality in these figures. Through these issues, the book examines what constituted the nature of the British Assam frontier, and how colonialism and capitalism shaped and reproduced an imperial frontier.

A new history of the First Barbary War, a conflict that helped plant the seeds for the United States' ascent to a global superpower.

After the American Revolution, maritime traders of the United States lost the protection of Britain's navy, leading privateers from the Barbary States-Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli, and the Sultanate of Morocco-to prey on American shipping in the Mediterranean, kidnapping and enslaving American sailors. While most European countries made treaties to circumvent this predation, this option was fiscally untenable for the young nation, and on May 14, 1801, Tripoli declared war on the United States.

In To Fix a National Character, Abigail G. Mullen argues that the First Barbary War represented much more than the military defeat of an irritating minor power. The United States sought a much more ambitious goal: entrance to the Mediterranean community, as well as respect and recognition as an equal member of the European Atlantic World. Without land bases in the region, good relations with European powers were critical to the United States' success in the war. And because the federal government was barely involved in the distant conflict, this diplomacy fell to a series of consuls and commodores whose goals, as well as diplomatic skills, varied greatly.

Drawing on naval records, consular documents, and personal correspondences, Mullen focuses on the early years of the war, when Americans began to build relationships with their Mediterranean counterparts. This nuanced political and diplomatic history demonstrates that these connections represented the turning point of the war, rather than any individual battles. Though the war officially ended in 1805, whether the United States truly "won" the war is debatable: European nations continued to regard the United States as a lesser nation, and the Barbary states continued their demands for at least another decade.

North Korea may be known as the world's most secluded society, but it too has witnessed the rapid rise of new media technologies in the new millennium, including the introduction of a 3G cell phone network in 2008. In 2009, there were only 70,000 cell phones in North Korea. That number has grown tremendously in just over a decade, with over 7 million registered as of 2022. This expansion took place amid extreme economic hardship and the ensuing possibilities of destabilization. Against this social and political backdrop, Millennial North Korea traces how the rapidly expanding media networks in North Korea impact their millennial generation, especially their perspective on the outside world.

Suk-Young Kim argues that millennials in North Korea play a crucial role in exposing the increasing tension between the state and its people, between risktakers who dare to transgress strict social rules and compliant citizens accustomed to the state's centralized governance, and between thriving entrepreneurs and those left out of the growing market economy.
