This book investigates how and to what extent the de facto regimes of the unrecognized “republics” of Transnistria in Moldova and Abkhazia in Georgia, albeit bound to Russia through loyalty and obsequiousness, can challenge the Kremlin’s political authority. Although such situations have been rare, they occurred when the so-called “Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic” (PMR) and “Republic of Abkhazia” were dissatisfied with existing security, economic and cultural arrangements with Russia and subsequently mobilized sufficient bargaining power to correct them. Transnistria’s resistance to Moscow’s influence has been mostly linked to its economic interests. For instance, Tiraspol has avoided entanglement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as supporting it would have threatened its trade with the EU which has surpassed Russia as PMR’s largest trading partner. Abkhazia has mostly projected its bargaining power when the Kremlin expected it to make concessions beyond its preferred range and threatened its distinct culture. Examples were the planned transfer of a state dacha in Pitsunda and a controversial 2024 investment agreement, granting property rights and tax benefits to Russian investors. Maximilian Ohle’s analysis demonstrates that the relations between de facto regimes and their patron state are more nuanced, active, and dynamic than a simple top-down approach reveals. Transnistria and Abkhazia play a greater role than usually assumed within the wider geostrategic rivalry between the West and Russia in the post-Soviet space.

While the technology on crewless ships (Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships, MASS) develops rapidly, the legal framework requires revisions to accommodate this new phenomenon. Although there is a broad understanding that there are no substantial barriers to the operation of MASS in legal terms, there is a need for a thorough revision process to provide for a proper regulatory framework. Future regulation should be based on several principles, including protecting the rights of victims of MASS operations and preserving the maritime environment, but, on the other hand, it should not hinder the development of technology and new industries. This book proposes regulatory solutions to the problems arising from MASS operations, carefully balancing the interests of many, at times new, parties involved.

This book provides the first systematic, quali-quantitative examination of how perception, orientation, and anticipation of the future are produced and reproduced in disruptive times. Utilizing an extensive and assorted Italian data set, it revolves around the contemporary sociological discussion between subjective expectations and objective chances, showing how disadvantaged actors self-excluded themselves while facing ambiguous prospects during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This book examines the trajectory of human rights in Turkey under the Justice and Development Party (AKP) from 2002 to 2024 within the broader context of EU-Turkey relations. It traces Turkey's shift from early democratic reforms aligned with EU accession goals to a period of democratic backsliding marked by centralization of power and repression. Adopting a neo-Gramscian lens, the book analyzes how EU conditionality initially fostered reform but ultimately failed to anchor liberal norms, revealing a contested hegemonic relationship. Turkey's evolution-from internalizing to resisting EU-promoted norms-is interpreted as a transition from passive norm transmission to the construction of a counter-hegemonic project.
