The book examines how contemporary states confront financial turmoil and weakened autonomy while crafting strategies to consolidate power and sustain development within their territories. Using Reach as its lens, the book traces how state expansion and private capital interact across diverse regions and territorial settings.

This book spans themes such as animal ecology, tourism studies, regional development, infrastructural studies, and space exploration. Despite their thematic diversity, each chapter follows the same thread: distance as a device for organizing frontiers of state expansion and governance. From the assertion of territorialization in remote areas to the state's increasing inability to mediate urban problems under market-driven governance, the book offers a window into the effects of longstanding neoliberal policies and the efforts of different states to double down on market-friendly, financially backed strategies to assert territorial authority. Drawing upon theoretical and empirical cases from countries like Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Finland, and Switzerland, this volume brings together focused attention on specific themes or regions to examine the contemporary territorial configurations at global, regional, and national scales. In doing so, it provides a comprehensive understanding of states, their economies, and their contemporary processes of territorialization.

The Political Economy of State Reaching will be of value to graduate students and researchers in political economy, economics, geography, international relations, public policy, development studies, anthropology, and sociology, as well as an interested general public

Does Jean-Paul Sartre's political theory have anything to offer to us today? Are Sartre's ways of reflecting on ethics, praxis, society and political philosophy in terms of hope for a better world, a better future, of interest today? This edited volume brings together Sartre scholars to address the later Sartre's relevance for political theory and philosophy, with a focus on the contemporary world. Using Critique of Dialectical Reason and Sartre's later engagements with politics, morality, colonialism, integral humanity and reflections on Marxism as starting points, the book is divided into two sections. The first part develops and expands on the core Sartrean themes of the later Sartre relevant for political thinkers. It deals among other things with the tensions between freedom and compulsion in social human action, with the intelligibility of human action in relation to historical circumstances and with how to understand material conditions and social institutions in congruence with the political world of action. The second part of the book directly poses issues concerning how a Sartrean approach may be developed to fit the contemporary world in order to tackle currently relevant topics such as democracy, populism, colonialism, disability justice and the climate crises.

Genocide and harrowing atrocities have brought insurmountable suffering to millions of people in the last decade. They have also highlighted the need to invoke the atrocity prevention agenda, developed and nurtured in the post-Cold War era. Yet, despite putting prevention at the top of UN agenda priorities, the international community has insufficiently discharged its obligations to prevent atrocities. This book concentrates on the concept of structural prevention, which has become more dominant in the UN atrocity prevention agenda in the last years. It argues that its scope should be widened to include peacebuilding and peace education. The study is structured to build a cumulative argument, beginning with a historical and conceptual overview of the UN's atrocity prevention agenda, distinguishing between structural and operational prevention. Subsequent chapters examine the roles of peacebuilding and peace education, both separately and in tandem, culminating in a proposal for a synergistic framework for integrating these mechanisms into the broader prevention agenda. The final chapter synthesizes the book's findings and reinforces its call for institutional coordination and strategic engagement across UN entities. Presenting an interdisciplinary analysis, the book will resonate with readers seeking to understand and improve the mechanisms of atrocity prevention in a fragmented global landscape. It will be of particular interest to academics, researchers and policymakers working in the areas of Transitional Justice, Human Rights, International Criminal Law, International Relations and Genocide Studies.

This book examines gender and socio-spatial inequalities in the context of climate change in the European Arctic states, analysing how climate policies, governance, and adaptation responses shape uneven social impacts across different regions and communities.

It provides a critical understanding of how climate change intersects gender and socio-spatial inequalities in the European Arctic. Drawing on feminist evaluation and feminist geography, the book combines theoretical analysis with empirical research based on policy documents and interviews. Through country case studies, this book offers a structured assessment of climate governance and adaptation responses, helping readers understand how policies translate into uneven social impacts and where gaps in inclusivity and justice remain.

Gender, Climate Change and the European Arctic is intended for researchers, students, and academics working in climate change studies, political science, gender studies, Arctic studies and geography. It will also be relevant for policymakers, practitioners, and professionals engaged in climate governance, environmental policy, and sustainable development.

As the full weight of planetary change comes to bear on international relations, states-and other political actors-are increasingly claiming the right to speak on behalf of the world's large-scale ecosystems. What are the broader consequences of such efforts to order world politics in "ecosystemic" pieces? This question has become pressing as we look increasingly to the subglobal level-and to nature itself-to help address the challenges of planetary change. Earth in Pieces offers an innovative, comparative exploration of the political consequences of cooperative efforts organized around large-scale ecosystems and presents a conceptual framework for examining how world order is shaped through ecosystem governance. Earth in Pieces identifies and examines a significant set of cases in which multi-issue, transnational cooperation is anchored in-and justified by-shared, border-crossing ecosystems. Although such cooperative arrangements have been studied for their environmental outcomes (or lack thereof), the broader political consequences of organizing cooperation around adjacent ecosystems have been largely overlooked. In this book, Wilson Rowe develops a novel research agenda on "ecosystemic politics," designed to foreground the ordering effects and shifting power relations that are facilitated by governing from ecosystems. The globally significant Amazon, Arctic, and Caspian Sea ecosystems and their governance are explored in depth as key cases. Drawing upon and comparing these findings, the book reflects on both the promise and the pitfalls of seeking to govern planetary change through ecosystem-anchored cooperation.

Very Short Introductions : Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring Radical right parties have become more legitimate and influential in many countries, with considerable political impact. They have participated in several governments, and are an important factor in a general trend towards more restrictive migration and integration policies. This Very Short Introduction provides an overview of a growing family of political parties, the radical right. Such parties have existed more or less continuously since the end of the Second World War, but have since the turn of the twenty-first century grown in electoral significance. The volume outlines their ideological foundations and profile, challenging conventional ideas about a radical right ideology containing nativism, authoritarianism, and populism. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Starting in the 2010s, women played an increasingly prominent and complex role in the scripted television landscape of the United States. But did TV become more feminist in content and form? Or did the shows just seem more feminist because women took up more prominent positions?

Jessica Ford examines popular media's tendency to apply the feminist label to all women-centric TV. Focusing on the post-Sex and the City era that began in 2005, Ford explores how women-centric scripted TV absorbed the feminisms of its past. It now televises these feminisms in divergent, diffuse, and distinct ways that find expression as a sensibility rather than a cogent politic, genre, or category. Ford's analysis examines shows identified as feminist alongside programs that negotiate ideas, offer critiques, generate feelings and sentiments, and deploy aesthetics in both low-key and visible political ways.

Innovative and insightful, Televising Feminism looks at the construction and expression of the many feminisms at work on American scripted television.

In a movement-defining book, the "godmother of the current moment of dissatisfaction with establishment politics" (The New York Times) tells the story of the rising anti-monopoly movement and charts a course to a democratic future

In a short, sharp political book, The Nation magazine's "Anti-Monopolist" columnist and "a prophet of the resurgent left" (Franklin Foer) explains the battle between the forces of oligarchy and the rise of the new anti-monopoly movement. Using the stories of modern anti-monopoly heroes including Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan; grocer Anthony Pena, who turned his frustrations with big box stores into a new grocers movement; and Doha Mekki, a Sudanese immigrant who developed the first successful criminal wage-fixing case for the Department of Justice; Teachout explains how anti-monopoly cuts across traditional political lines and gives real teeth to economic populism.

Teachout, a scholar of the law of democracy and a politician whose run for governor of New York State shocked the political establishment, argues that monopoly is the architecture of private tyranny, and that breaking corporate power is essential to building a new democracy. From AI to agriculture, healthcare to energy, Americans understand that corporate concentration doesn't just cause inequality; it organizes power. Anti-Monopoly gives that feeling a name, a history, and a way forward.

After a spate of books out of the Abundance movement arguing that we need to remove local democracy and focus on efficiency at scale, this book provides a sharp counterpoint.

This book examines the changing demographics, attitudes and electoral behaviours of Londoners over the last 50 years and considers the impact these changes have had on the policy agendas of the capital, past, present and future.

Focussing on the issues of greatest concern to voters in the capital, including crime, the economy and the cost of living, housing, inequality, health, immigration and the environment, the book examines the capital's economic and cultural dominance and how it influences broader debates about urban politics. It draws on a wide range of scholarly literature and data, providing a comprehensive understanding of how and why the political and policy landscapes of London have shifted in recent decades. The book questions how much space is available for policymakers to tackle the major issues facing Londoners, whether they can forge political coalitions for change and who will 'win' and 'lose' under policy reforms.

This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners of British and metropolitan politics as well as those with interests in history, elections, political parties, political sociology, public policy and urban studies.

Organization theory is one of the most interesting, useful, and dynamic fields in public administration and public policy, and no student should complete their degree without at least one course in the subject. Yet many believe the field is full of "old dead ideas" - or at least ideas that went dormant somewhere around the second half of the 20th Century. Organization Theory and Governance for the 21st Century: A Public Service Approach, Second Edition breathes new life into this worthy field of study, providing the rich theoretical background students need to analyze and take effective action in public and nonprofit organizations to support contemporary, democratic governance -- all within a sociopolitical context that is increasingly complicated.

While other books offer historical or thematic overviews of organization theories, this unique textbook explores concepts accessible to-and actionable by-practitioners, alongside the available scientific evidence supporting (or not!) the concepts' effectiveness. In addition to embracing a conscious and thoughtful awareness of the history and evolving nature of organizations and the importance of evidence-based decisions, this text integrates normative and ethical aspects of organizations and their operations, to demonstrate the role that public and nonprofit organizations play within a robust, sustainable, and functional democracy. While authors Austin, Rideout, and Park have retained the overarching structure of the first edition, this thoroughly revised second edition introduces all-new theories as well as updated examples, case studies, and reflection questions.

Organization Theory and Governance for the 21st Century: A Public Service Approach, Second Edition is essential reading for all students enrolled in graduate level organization theory, behavior, and development courses, particularly in public administration and nonprofit management degree programs. The book is also suitable for upper-division undergraduate courses, primarily in public administration and political science.

National policies have dominated public policy research, teaching, and discourse in India, yet states have authored impactful innovations in their quest for solutions to problems specific to their requirements.

States Matter places the states at the core of India's public policy story through twenty carefully curated case studies of major policy initiatives across ten states over four decades (1970-2010). Drawing on the policy cycle framework, this book explains how states identify problems, place them on the public agenda, design state-specific interventions, choose policy instruments, negotiate implementation challenges, and shape long-term outcomes. The study combines comparative case analysis with archival research and insights drawn from the authors' extensive administrative experience and access to policymakers across state and central governments. Case studies cover a wide range of state interventions from Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, and Himachal Pradesh, examining sectors including education, electricity, sanitation, forestry, livelihoods, and urban infrastructure.

This book offers one of the few systematic applications of tools of policy analysis to the Indian context. It is essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners in public policy, political science, public administration, development studies, and South Asian studies. Bridging academic theory and administrative practice, it provides unique comparative insights into four decades of policymaking across states and sectors, reshaping discussions on federalism, decentralization, state capacity, implementation challenges, and political economy.

This timely and original guide offers the first comprehensive analysis of Other Transaction Authorities (OTAs) across both defense and civilian U.S. agencies. As flexible contracting tools designed to foster innovation, OTAs enable government agencies to collaborate with nontraditional contractors, accelerate technology development, and reduce acquisition barriers.

Authored by Dr. Dolores Kuchina-Musina, an internationally respected authority in acquisition and contracting policy, Rethinking Innovation in Federal Procurement blends rigorous scholarship with practical insight. Drawing on historical developments, legislative milestones, and empirical case studies, she examines how Other Transaction Authorities (OTAs) foster public-private partnerships that share risk, resources, and expertise, advancing innovation policy in real-world settings. She guides readers through the evolution of OTA policy, its implementation across defense and civilian sectors, and its influence on intellectual property rights, acquisition efficiency, and cross-sector collaboration.

With clear writing and a balanced tone, Rethinking Innovation in Federal Procurement is accessible to professionals at all career stages. It fills a critical gap in the literature by connecting acquisition reform to innovation strategy, and by encouraging interdisciplinary engagement across public administration, economics, and technology policy. Whether you're shaping innovation policy or studying its effects, it provides a vital lens on how governments can better harness innovation through alternative contracting.

Deluded New World explores the cultural and ideological battlegrounds shaping contemporary discourse. Controversy dogs many aspects of our lives today, from denying women the security they expect in designated spaces to no longer considering God to be male. The first has serious implications; the second is of no consequence to most. Between these two extremes lie some of the polarising issues addressed in this book: bigotry and racism, political correctness, gender and sexuality, slavery and colonisation, and free speech. Each chapter draws on concrete, real-world examples to illuminate the complex intersections between history, culture, and modern identity politics. While the subjects discussed are not new, their framing as "controversial" often reflects the moral, political, and intellectual sensibilities of the present age. Slavery, for example, can be traced back at least 10,000 years, though few considered it to be controversial until the Age of Enlightenment dawned in the seventeenth century; free speech has been constrained since the time of Socrates. This book argues that some topics, like bigotry and aspects of sexual difference, are partially innate, whereas others are culturally contingent and reflect the ideological climate of the twenty-first century. Deluded New World argues against the wholesale acceptance of dominant narratives and reflects on the direction of modern Western societies. Borrowing its title in part from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, this book is not fiction, but a warning. Pasternak finds evidence that at least one instance of deluded ideology is already in decline. But most continue unabated. These he considers to be a threat to the liberties inherent in the Free World.

Coastal regions are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis, including sea-level rise, cyclones, flooding, coastal erosion, and unsustainable development. These interconnected challenges threaten both ecosystems and livelihoods, highlighting the urgent need for innovative and inclusive approaches to disaster risk reduction. This book examines the evolving socio-ecological dimensions of climate-related disasters in coastal environments and explores the potential of participatory Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity.

Organised into three parts, the book first introduces key concepts, theories, and approaches related to climate disasters, geographies of coastal socio-ecological systems, and vulnerability assessment. The second part investigates contemporary challenges facing coastal communities and critically examines nature-based, community-centered, and participatory approaches to disaster risk reduction. Particular attention is given to the integration of local and Indigenous knowledge within participatory GIS frameworks for more effective and equitable decision-making. The final part presents empirical insights through field narratives and case studies that address climate adaptation, community resilience, sea-level rise, coastal flooding, migration, climate variability, Indigenous technical knowledge, sustainable management practices, and others.

Bridging theory, methodology, and practice, this volume advances understanding of coastal disaster risk reduction and offers valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, planners, students, and others engaged in climate resilience and sustainable coastal development.

  • Two all-new chapters on public administration in non-democratic regimes and on populism and bureaucracy.
  • An exploration of the field's movement away from New Public Management (NPM) and the search for new models of governance, including New Public Governance, and other approaches emphasizing collaboration with private sector actors.
  • More analysis of the role of digital government as a component of public administration, as well as a renewed emphasis on political and sociological analysis, including the growing literature on the political economy of public organizations.

Drawing on evidence from a wide variety of political systems, The Politics of Bureaucracy, Eighth Edition, is essential reading for all students of public administration, government, policy analysis, politics, and international relations.

Countries rarely fit neatly into the categories of "democracy" or "autocracy." Many operate in a turbulent middle with competitive elections alongside weak checks and balances, uneven rule of law, and fragile public trust. In Adolescent Democracies, Ioana-Maria Petrescu-former Finance Minister of Romania and an academic-offers a clear, field-tested guide to making policy in these in-between systems, where corruption, limited civic participation, and institutional weakness collide with urgent demands for better public services.

Drawing on government experience and social-science research, Petrescu maps how politicians, bureaucrats, voters, and stakeholders interact with formal rules, and the informal workarounds that often matter more in practice. She explains where reforms stall, how incentives and power shape outcomes, and why questions of social equity emerge at each stage: who benefits, who is excluded, and what it takes to make policy both effective and fair.

Organized in three parts-actors, institutions, and the policymaking process-the book is both a scholarly contribution and a practical manual for reformers working under real constraints. Case studies from Romania, Kenya, Georgia, Chile, South Korea, and beyond bridge theory and practice, translating lessons into actionable tools for designing policy, diagnosing institutional bottlenecks, and building coalitions for change. This book is essential reading for policymakers, students, international advisors, and anyone invested in strengthening governance in fragile democratic settings.

This book examines how democracies worldwide are being challenged by populism, polarization, and the erosion of minority belonging. Democracies around the world are under strain. Elections are contested, courts politicized, minorities scapegoated, and the social bonds that hold diverse societies together are fraying. Why is this happening, and what can be done?

Bringing together scholars from five continents, this book examines how social solidarity-the often-invisible glue of democratic life-is being made, unmade, and remade in the twenty-first century. Drawing on case studies from India, Nigeria, Costa Rica, Kyrgyzstan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, and the United States, contributors trace two routes of democratic erosion: when institutions are designed in ways that concentrate power and exclude minorities, and when majority rule overrides the rights and belonging of those it should protect.

This is not a book of diagnoses alone. Each chapter pairs critical analysis with concrete remedies, ranging from electoral and constitutional reform to grassroots coalitions, interfaith alliances, and trauma-aware responses to political extremism. Together, the essays offer a toolkit for rebuilding democratic resilience in an age of polarization, populism, and contested belonging.

This book is essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners in political science, sociology, comparative politics, democracy studies, and conflict resolution. It will also appeal to policymakers, civil society organizations, and anyone concerned with the future of democratic governance and social cohesion in diverse societies.
The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Peace Review.

This book introduces the concept of "risk literacy" and explores its pivotal role in improving affective, cognitive, and behavioral learning when communicating science focused on complex, risk-related issues.

Risk literacy is both defined as and measured by the ability to understand accurately, evaluate critically, and respond effectively to risks that may pose threats to the health and safety of people, property, and planet. This book helps bridge a gap between scholarly insights and practical applications by introducing "transformative explanations" as a tool for practitioners to engage meaningfully with and improve risk literacy among diverse lay audiences by addressing public misconceptions, rebuilding trust, and fostering collaborative risk mitigation. Each chapter uses real-world vignettes and case studies to illustrate the challenges and opportunities of risk communication, as well as provide communication strategies to build trust, make complex concepts understandable, and propose risk management directives that are both actionable and efficacious to diverse lay audiences.

Building Risk Literacy serves as a practical guide for practitioners and students in fields such as emergency response, public health, climate science, community health, and infrastructure management, while also contributing to the academic discourse on risk and crisis communication.

Critical Algorithmic Literacy explores the complexity of what it means to know algorithms and what such insight affords individuals, communities, and society. It suggests that critical algorithmic literacy involves understanding what algorithms do and why, but also what they mean to and for people as they navigate them in specific contexts. Drawing on a theoretical framework informed by feminist epistemologies, literacy studies, critical algorithm studies, and science and technology studies, the book illustrates how critical algorithmic literacy both shapes and is shaped by membership in different social worlds. Rather than as a value-neutral, universal skillset, it conceptualizes critical algorithmic literacy as relational, contextual, and socially situated. Through case studies of three communities entangled with algorithms in distinct ways, the book challenges prevailing visions of algorithmic literacy that privilege technical mastery and are driven by progress narratives serving powerful interests. It reorients critical algorithmic literacy around the goal of just social transformation, positioning it as a foundation for bottom-up governance. Kelley Cotter argues that critical algorithmic literacy plays an essential role in supporting individual agency and building collective momentum toward institutional action^-^but is a necessary, albeit insufficient, condition for broad scale change, given the structural power platforms continue to wield. In line with the broader participatory turn in governance, the book contends that governance of algorithms at the institutional level requires: 1) recognition of algorithm expertise as diverse and contextual; 2) de-centering of platform-centric knowledge; 3) centering heterogeneous, partial, and marginalized perspectives; and 4) embracing multi-layered, agonistic forms of public participation.

John Locke is a pre-eminent figure in the philosophical tradition. He published landmark works on epistemology, political theory, economics, education, and religion. His Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Two Treatises of Government continue to be read and interpreted across the globe. In the aftermath of Locke's death, friends and contemporaries composed memoirs of his life, character, and opinions. These became foundational for all future Locke biography and shaped the Enlightenment's reception of him. The Early Lives of John Locke collects memoirs by Damaris Masham, Jean Le Clerc, Pierre Coste, and the third Earl of Shaftesbury, together with those of Anthony Wood and Richard Laughton, with fragments and letters by James Tyrrell and Philip van Limborch, and an essay on Locke's writings by Pierre Des Maizeaux. Mark Goldie and Delphine Soulard support these works with a critical apparatus and commentary, and an extended Introduction. Special attention is paid to the nuances of cultural transmission between French and English versions of Coste's and Le Clerc's memoirs. This volume is an essential resource for scholars and readers of Locke, providing contexts for understanding his philosophy and political theory.

This book aids the reader in identifying and evaluating the assumptions underlying a wide range of public matters. It will help enhance the readers' understanding of major public issues, so that they can ask more incisive and better-informed questions.

The book explains, gives examples of, and evaluates twelve major political ideologies, thereby identifying the main theories and assumptions underlying a wide range of public matters and policies. It will enable readers to develop their existing capacity to understand major public issues. It shows how the major political ideologies give rise to, or in some cases specify, a particular view of human beings, with significant consequences for the ways we organise our political systems and our forms of political participation. In each chapter, the author provides a brief historical introduction and then outlines the key points of the ideology concerned. The chapters follow a broad conceptual sequence, beginning with a historical backdrop, and adopt a chronological sequence where required.

The book will be useful to students, researchers and teachers of political science, political theory, public administration, philosophy, public policy, law, governance, journalism, and management among others. It will be equally indispensable to general readers, social activists, advocacy groups, journalists, civil society institutions, and public service training institutions.

How to Research Researchers: Methods for Studying Political Scientists Worldwide provides methodological guidance for scholars and graduate students seeking a deeper understanding of the study of researchers as a field of inquiry. While the volume focuses on political science and its key actors, political scientists, the methods and examples it presents are adaptable across disciplines. Each chapter introduces a method and guides the reader through its practical application. The volume covers well-established methods such as surveys, interviews, and bibliometric network analysis, as well as approaches gaining traction, such as archival analysis and autoethnography. Other chapters explore approaches that are widely used in some fields but remain underutilized in the study of political science's history and development, including set-theoretic methods of concept analysis and comparative analysis, ethnography, storytelling, and mixed- and multi-method designs. Across the chapters, contributors engage directly with the specific challenges of researching disciplines and their practitioners. The introductory and concluding chapters offer timely reflections on methodological pluralism and reflexivity, emphasizing how diverse methods can illuminate knowledge production, the organization of the discipline, and the inequalities that shape it, as well as the role of political science in contemporary society. By foregrounding the experiences and practices of researchers, the book advances a deeper and more critical understanding of political science, an endeavor that is especially important in the context of ongoing global crises.

Combining neoclassical realism and political psychology, this book conducts a Cost Dynamics analysis of the goal, power, and will of the U.S. and China. It argues that while the strategic competition between the two countries is intense, it sustains a fragile balance of competition without outright conflict.

Addressing both opportunity and audience costs, the book explores how domestic variables such as strategic culture and leadership cognition influence the formulation and implementation of foreign policy. Case studies demonstrate that the complex differences in goal, power, and will result in persistent strategic and policy misalignments, while simultaneously creating mutual constraints that prevent escalation to full-scale conflict. In the field of artificial intelligence, the book introduces "technological power" as a "fluid" variable to analyze the flow of technology and structural complementarity. It concludes that building a "resilient" U.S.-China relationship does not require eliminating competition or concealing differences, but rather managing risks by recognizing each other's strategic bottom lines and political constraints.

This book will appeal to scholars and students of political science, international relations, and U.S.-China relations.

Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has moved from unrivalled global dominance to a far more uncertain position in world politics. Power and Strategy in the 21st Century traces that trajectory, beginning with the optimism of the early 1990s and moving through the shocks of 9/11, the Global War on Terror, the 2008 financial crisis, and the rise of new challengers. It offers a clear, engaging account of how a period of unipolar confidence gave way to strategic overreach, growing constraints, and questions about America's role in the international system.

Taking a regional approach, the book shows how U.S. influence has shifted in Europe, East Asia, the Middle East, South and Central Asia, the Western Hemisphere, and Africa, since 9/11. Each chapter examines how American policies (ranging from diplomacy and military interventions to economic statecraft) have shaped local dynamics and contributed to broader patterns of imperial overstretch and decline. This structure enables grounded understanding of how global power is exercised differently across regions and why outcomes vary so widely.

Designed for courses in U.S. foreign policy and international relations, Power and Strategy in the 21st Century provides a concise, accessible framework for understanding American power today. It equips readers to assess competing explanations for U.S. decline and to think critically about where the international order may be heading next.

Although the 1998 Belfast/Good Friday Agreement brought an end to large-scale violence in Northern Ireland, the durability of peace has remained fragile. Persistent sectarian division, institutional instability, and the shock of Brexit have repeatedly tested the settlement. Yet while political leaders, parties, civil society actors, and international mediators have been extensively studied, one crucial dimension of the peace process has remained largely invisible: the role of the public bureaucracy. Civil Servants and Peacebuilding in Northern Ireland offers the first systematic analysis of how the British, Irish, and Northern Irish civil services helped to design, stabilise, and sustain peace. It argues that peace was not only negotiated politically but also built administratively, through the everyday practices of officials who organised negotiating arenas, drafted texts, cultivated cross-border networks, and maintained continuity during periods of crisis. Drawing on archival research and elite interviews, the book reconstructs the hidden architecture of peacebuilding, foregrounding civil servants as policy entrepreneurs acting under ministerial direction who shaped the conditions under which compromise became possible. Adopting an interdisciplinary framework bridging political science, public administration, and history, the book conceptualises peacebuilding as a pathway towards the institutionalisation of interactive governance. It traces how administrative culture, institutional memory, and informal routines evolved from the height of the conflict through the negotiation, implementation, and testing of the 1998 constitutional settlement. Particular attention is paid to cross-border cooperation, secrecy and backstage diplomacy, and the purposeful use of multivocality and procedural innovation to sustain dialogue in the absence of consensus. This book brings into view a previously under-systematised dimension of the Northern Ireland peace process and extends wider debates on governance and peacebuilding. It shows how bureaucratic infrastructures can underpin political stability even when formal institutions falter, offering insights for other societies grappling with conflict, division, and fragile settlements.

Germany is an environmental pathbreaker among industrial societies, maintaining its export-driven economy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and committing to carbon-neutrality by 2045. Yet it was ordinary citizens rather than bureaucrats or industry who generated its most durable policy solutions. Drawing on a range of case studies from the twentieth century to the present, Carol Hager and Thomas M. Lekan show how local residents combined social and ecological agendas and often defied government officials or corporate interests. These citizens promoted renewable energy, accessible public transportation, sustainable housing, biosphere reserves, and urban green spaces. Each chapter advances a three-pronged understanding of Germany's sustainability culture anchored by a deep sense of place; a 'do-it-yourself' mentality; and the generative power of conflict. By showing how a highly industrialized country became ecologically wiser, this study seeks to re-energize conversations about climate action and green transitions in societies across the globe.

This book presents and discusses concepts of schizoanalysis that serve as theoretical tools for analyzing contemporary political processes and modes of subjectivation. Originally developed by the philosopher Gilles Deleuze and the psychoanalyst and activist Felix Guattari, schizoanalysis is a critical political psychology that analyzes psychological phenomena in light of social, historical-cultural, aesthetic, and political issues. It provides an original analytical approach that expands the repertoires of psychology and the human sciences by apprehending phenomena in the resulting relationship between power, desiring investments, and the production of subjectivation - that is, in the articulation between politics, psychology, and subjectivity.

With accessible language, this volume introduces the reader to the dynamics of 'Deleuze-Guattarian' thought, as well as to the specific terminologies that express it, based on eight fundamental themes in the articulation between psychology and politics, which contribute to understanding the current scenario of social effervescence and crisis: power; subjectivity; institutions and codes; capitalism; psychopolitical practices and assemblages; microfascisms; the State and public policies; and social movements.

Due to its didactic nature, this book can be used as an introduction to schizoanalysis as an analytical tool that can be used by researchers to study contemporary political and subjective processes, as well as a didactic text in social psychology and political psychology courses.

This is a revised and updated English translation of a book originally published in Brazilian Portuguese. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Both the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine became major crises for public managers in the Visegrad 4 states of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. Each of those states responded in different ways to the two crises, based on their ideologies and levels of capabilities. Of course, the two crises themselves were very different in terms of their impact on the public and the set of public managers that needed to make critical decisions. This work proposes that there are three stages in crisis management, and that theoretical perspective will lay the groundwork for analysis of the four states. Those stages include Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Risk Communication. Taken together, they offer a portrayal of the Resilience of each state in terms of both public management and the general public.
