Trump's Presidency and America's Reputation explores the global perception of the United States during Donald Trump's second presidency.
A diverse team of authors examine how countries around the world view American leadership, policies, and international relations under President Trump, and how international media coverage has affected this perception. The book is structured in three key sections: Projected Rhetoric and Symbolic Statecraft examines how the United States actively projects its image, The Spectacle of Personalization focuses on the hyper-personalization of politics that often overrides a country's institutional reputation, and Local Receptions and Strategic Adaptations focuses on how local cultures, political elites, and everyday publics filter U.S. signals through their own cultural schemas, historical memories, and strategic survival instincts. Chapters investigate the shifts in U.S. diplomacy, public diplomacy and foreign policy, how these changes influence global perceptions and diplomatic relations, and the impact on alliances and international cooperation.
Drawing on expertise from political communication, public relations, public diplomacy, and media studies, this book will interest researchers and upper-level students working across these interdisciplinary areas.

A groundbreaking history and critique of a little-explored aspect of American law enforcement: the often deadly 911 emergency response system
911 is largely promoted as a tool to save lives-yet too often, it puts people's safety in jeopardy, especially for those in communities of color. We all know the tragic case of George Floyd, but what many overlook is that this calamity was put in motion not just by a police officer, but by a single 911 call. In this important book full of original research, Rebecca Neusteter, one of the country's leading experts on emergency response, uncovers a shockingly unregulated system with deeply racist roots.
Although fire chiefs had called for a universal emergency hotline for years, it wasn't until Newark, Watts, and Detroit exploded in race riots in 1967 that federal authorities finally moved to create a system-one designed to summon the police quickly to quell civil unrest. Neusteter reveals that this legacy of racial social control continues today, with 911 calls defaulting to a response by armed police, whether or not they are well-matched to the need at hand. The book covers the all-too-frequent killings of unarmed mentally ill people as well as the "Karen" syndrome, in which primarily white women call 911 to report people of color engaged in harmless activities-endangering their lives in the process. In her final chapters, Neusteter highlights the difficult nature of the 911 profession and the dedicated public servants who show up every day to make the system run, details promising new models of emergency response, and outlines other changes needed to improve 911. Neusteter's research is an urgent call to action that challenges us to transform America's overburdened 911 system and make it safe, just, and equitable for all.

Since 2016, the spectacle of Trump has overshadowed the emergence of an equally serious threat to our democracy: a small but influential group of "post-liberal" intellectuals (as they style themselves) who have become key influencers of the New Right.
Taking a ground-breaking deep dive into the world of post-liberalism, The Opportunists immerses the reader in this simmering ideological stew. Historian Hannah Gurman combines intellectual biography and political history, offering incisive profiles of key thinkers including Patrick Deneen, Adrian Vermeule, Yoram Hazony, Erika Bachiochi, Mary Harrington, Oren Cass, and Sohrab Ahmari. These figures have played a crucial role in legitimizing Trumpism beyond the MAGA base, providing intellectual fuel for the next generation of right-wing leaders who embrace such varied-and poorly understood-intellectual strains as Catholic integralism, neoconservative Zionism, reactionary feminism, and "pro-worker" conservatism. These ideas, and their proponents, are poised to determine the course of America's future, driving the creation of new think tanks and media outlets, rebranding the agendas of existing conservative organizations, and dramatically reshaping reactionary politics in the United States and beyond.
We ignore the post-liberals, Gurman argues, at our own peril. The Opportunists is a major effort to expose the new ideas shaping our perilous world-and a first step in understanding how to combat them.

This book examines how democracies worldwide are being challenged by populism, polarization, and the erosion of minority belonging. Democracies around the world are under strain. Elections are contested, courts politicized, minorities scapegoated, and the social bonds that hold diverse societies together are fraying. Why is this happening, and what can be done?
Bringing together scholars from five continents, this book examines how social solidarity-the often-invisible glue of democratic life-is being made, unmade, and remade in the twenty-first century. Drawing on case studies from India, Nigeria, Costa Rica, Kyrgyzstan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, and the United States, contributors trace two routes of democratic erosion: when institutions are designed in ways that concentrate power and exclude minorities, and when majority rule overrides the rights and belonging of those it should protect.
This is not a book of diagnoses alone. Each chapter pairs critical analysis with concrete remedies, ranging from electoral and constitutional reform to grassroots coalitions, interfaith alliances, and trauma-aware responses to political extremism. Together, the essays offer a toolkit for rebuilding democratic resilience in an age of polarization, populism, and contested belonging.
This book is essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners in political science, sociology, comparative politics, democracy studies, and conflict resolution. It will also appeal to policymakers, civil society organizations, and anyone concerned with the future of democratic governance and social cohesion in diverse societies.
The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Peace Review.

This book examines Moving Target Defense (MTD) as a strategic and institutional response to the weaknesses of static cyber defence in democratic states.
Using Canada as the principal empirical case, and drawing comparisons with the United States, the UK and Australia, the book argues that adaptive denial is a governance problem before it is a technological one. It develops a framework for evaluating MTD against alliance interoperability, digital sovereignty, and democratic accountability, and examines real-world threats, including Chinese state-sponsored hacking groups such as Volt Typhoon, ransomware attacks on hospitals and pipelines, and foreign interference in democratic institutions. Bridging cybersecurity technology, national security policy, and democratic governance, this work provides practical insights for policymakers, security professionals, and scholars seeking to understand how liberal democracies can better protect themselves in an era of relentless digital competition.
This book will be of much interest to students of cyber-security, strategic studies, law and technology, and International Relations.

The Nigerian government has increasingly relied on the military for maintaining law and order and countering the proliferation of armed groups, many of which pose multidimensional threats to state authority, life, and property of the citizens, as well as national stability and prosperity. This book investigates the Nigerian military's evolution, justifications, considerations, capabilities, engagements, contributions, challenges, and possible ways forward.
The book considers the contexts, rationales, and merits of military deployment for internal security and law enforcement operations, as well as the tactical, strategic and policy dynamics, contributions, challenges, and recommendations. In addition to the Biafra, Niger Delta and Boko Haram wars, the book considers less publicised cases of military campaigns against armed bandits, neo-Biafra and Yoruba secessionists, ethno-religious and communal militias, illegal or informal miners and refiners, and smugglers. It also reflects on military partnerships with intelligence agencies and transcends army-ground-forces reductionism in providing airpower perspectives on Nigerian military operations.
This book will be an interesting read for policymakers, practitioners and researchers across the fields of political science, sociology, African studies, and military and security studies, as well as members of the public with an interest in Nigerian/African peace, conflict, and development.

This edited volume introduces memoryscapes to explain how collective memory moves between conflict and healing. Through a dynamic framework and diverse cases, it shows how inclusive, participatory practices can transform violent pasts and foster accountability, reconciliation and sustainable peace.
Readers gain a practical framework to analyze and shape memory work that supports healing, justice and sustainable peace. The book delivers this through its three-gradient model (healing, dissent, resistance), a methodological toolkit, and comparative cases from museums, monuments, heritage and burial sites, refugee camps, media, education and the arts-while confronting politicisation, institutionalisation and post-truth challenges.
Intended for researchers, students and practitioners in peace and conflict studies, heritage and memory studies, anthropology, sociology, political science and media/education, as well as museum and memorial professionals, peacebuilders, educators, civil society organisers and policymakers working with contested pasts.

This textbook provides the first comprehensive guide to conducting interdisciplinary research specifically designed for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and related programs such as Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics (PPLE), and Human, Social, and Political Sciences (HSPS), addressing the critical gap in teaching materials for these growing fields.
Building on prior interdisciplinary education literature, this textbook provides a guide for conducting interdisciplinary research on societal challenges central to these study programs. It begins with an introduction emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary integration for a more comprehensive understanding of today's challenges, followed by a six-step interdisciplinary research method to systematically integrate insights while addressing challenges unique to PPE-like programs. The remaining chapters focus on applications to key issues in these fields, such as emancipation, polarization, digitalization, and international cooperation.
Aimed at undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in PPE, PPLE, HSPS, and similar interdisciplinary programs that combine humanities and social sciences, this book is a valuable tool for instructors teaching in these programs seeking structured pedagogical resources. It will also be suitable for researchers and academics interested in interdisciplinary methodologies for addressing complex societal problems.

This introductory textbook offers students a comprehensive and accessible overview of the complex relationship between energy supply, energy markets and international politics.
The idea that energy shapes and is shaped by geopolitics is firmly rooted in the popular imagination - and not without reason. Very few countries have the means to secure their energy needs through locally available supplies; instead, enduring dependencies upon other countries have developed. Given energy's strategic significance, supply systems for fuels and electricity are now seamlessly interwoven with foreign policy and global politics. Energy and Geopolitics enables students to enhance their understanding of this field and sharpen their analytical skills. Per Hoegselius guides us through the complexities of world energy and international energy relations, examining a wide spectrum of fossil fuels, alongside nuclear and renewable energies. Uniquely, the book also shows how the geopolitics of energy is not merely a matter for the great powers and reveals how actors in the world's smaller nations are as active in their quest for power and control. This revised and expanded edition takes into account several dramatic shifts that have occurred in recent years in the global energy arena, including the spectacular renewables boom, the quest for transnational electricity grids and hydrogen trade, and the radical restructuring of global fossil fuel flows following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the eruption of the Iran war in 2026.
Encouraging students to apply a number of central concepts and theoretical ideas to different energy sources within a multitude of geographical, political and historical contexts, this book will be a vital resource to students and scholars of geopolitics, energy security and international environmental policy and politics.

This book systematically investigates the nature of political conflict. It combines the tools and insights of existential phenomenology with those from critical theory and qualitative social research to inquire into the ways that we experience conflict in contemporary polities.
Though political conflict is an inevitable feature of human life-and one that seems ever-more on our minds in today's democratic societies-it has so far garnered little attention in political philosophy as a phenomenon in its own right. Arguing that the current state of political conflict and its theorization constitutes a crisis analogous to those identified by Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty, this book employs the phenomenological method to appreciate the experiential depth and complexity of political conflict. Furthermore, it emphasizes the spatial and bodily origins of our clashes. The author's analysis, which is based on interview data with political actors and a fruitful dialogue between 'classical' phenomenologists, feminist theory, and critical philosophy of race, shows that political conflict often ends up irresolvable because of the way that power asymmetrically situates us vis-a-vis one another. Ultimately, the book argues that it is only through an inter-corporeality grounded in a political flesh that particularly intractable forms of conflict can be tamed.
Experiencing Political Conflict will be of interest to scholars and graduate students working in phenomenology, social and political philosophy, and critical theory.

In a trenchant work of nonfiction, the #1 New York Times bestselling author identifies a series of self-inflicted wounds on our body politic that have led to the current moment, and shows us how we can undo the harm
"A modern-day Tocqueville, Richard North Patterson marshals an immense amount of research to show, incisively and readably, why we are now in danger of losing our democracy-and how we can recover from our current malaise." -Max Boot, author of Reagan: His Life and Legend
In a trenchant work of nonfiction, the New York Times bestselling author identifies a series of self-inflicted wounds and destabilizing societal trends that have led America to the precipice of autocracy, and lays out a program or reversing the harm. From politicized Supreme Court decisions to wrong-headed policy initiatives and toxic political maneuvers, Richard North Patterson-whose novel on presidential politics, Protect and Defend, was a #1 New York Times bestseller-combines fifteen fateful moments in the past quarter-century with an immersive narrative of the underlying economic, cultural, and political developments that made these tripwires so profoundly consequential.
Starting with the Supreme Court intervention that awarded George W. Bush the presidency, Patterson examines the often under-appreciated turning points that helped undermine our polity, from the accidental accession of John Roberts as Chief Justice and the ruin wreaked by America's subprime mortgages, to Donald Trump's demand to see Barack Obama's birth certificate, Marco Rubio's sabotage of his own immigration reform bill, and Mitch McConnell's refusal to convict Trump for his attempted coup-culimating in the ultimate betrayal of our constitutional democracy: the Roberts Court's invitation to unbounded presidential power.
Patterson's near-encyclopedic knowledge of recent U.S. history along with his political acumen and training as a trial lawyer allow him to distill cause and effect in a deeply synthetic way, building to a comprehensive account of the perverse compound of ignorance, corruption, racism, religiosity, plutocracy, and authoritarianism wrought by Trump's return to power. He concludes with a detailed program for establishing a truly equitable and democratic society, offering hope for America's future.
