This book addresses a critical gap between the nature of contemporary policy challenges and the way most academic research is conducted. Policymakers and practitioners routinely face complex, interconnected problems - ranging from climate resilience and public health crises to social equity and organizational management - that demand interdisciplinary perspectives and computationally informed approaches. Yet, public policy scholarship often remains fragmented, narrowly disciplinary, and slow to integrate the rapidly advancing tools of data science. This book provides a timely intervention by demonstrating how computational approaches can be meaningfully applied to policy analysis, bridging a persistent divide between aspiration and practice in the field. Through exploring cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and examples of how computational tools can address real-world problems, this book provides both inspiration and practical guidance for advancing public policy scholarship and practice.

In post-socialist Poland, the state offers no support for its disabled citizens and often abandons families to care for them. Natalia Pamula draws on memoirs, novels, journalistic accounts, protest statements, and interviews to excavate the voices of disabled people and caregivers caught within a system that both privatizes care and denies aid to families.

Polish politicians regularly idealize the family. But, as Pamula shows, such rhetoric coerces people into a state of violent intimacy that forces the burden of care onto family members bound by love, dependence, and responsibility. As the narratives show, disability destabilizes national myths, challenges heteronormative and patriarchal family ideals, and exposes continuities between socialist and capitalist regimes in their treatment of disabled citizens.

A rich blend of activism and analysis, Disability Disruptions ventures outside Anglophone notions of disability to highlight how Poland's disabled people and caregivers overcome lack of recognition, resist social death, and rewrite public memory.

Examining how Singapore has responded to one of the most pressing social challenges of our time, this book analyses one of the world's fastest-ageing societies. The book provides an evidence-based account of how a small but highly developed state has built and adapted its policies for older adults over seven decades.

Covering key policy areas, the author traces how government approaches have evolved across six distinct historical periods, from a foundational self-reliance model to an increasingly distributed whole-of-society framework. A growing reliance on indirect policy tools such as employer incentives, tax relief, and public-private partnerships is contrasted with economies around the world. Based on a series of interviews across multiple generations, the book presents evidence of policy effectiveness for a national approach to ageing.

Concluding with a new framework for evaluating whether ageing policies genuinely meet older adults' needs, this book provides a valuable reference for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking evidence-informed frameworks for designing and reforming ageing governance systems across diverse national contexts.

This book examines how - in the 21st century world of big data and social media - artificial intelligence and algorithms are being used to predict our economic, political, and cultural activity.

Drawing inspiration from the concept of a 'minority report', as introduced in Philip K. Dick's 1956 short story, the book explores how the byproduct of digital content on social media often generates a collective perception of reality. This book breaks down how this collective perception is ultimately manufactured - by cultural, political, and economic interests - and, in reality - through additional issues such as data errors, misinformation, and bias - can often be false. Applying critical political economic analysis and cultural legal studies to these problems, Blevins emphasizes how we can do more to challenge the perceptions that pervade popular online discourse. Throughout the book, he demystifies the systems and processes that generate these information flows, enabling readers to better fight for remedies to the problem - legal and otherwise - and create a more just digital future.

This book will be of interest to students and scholars of media and communication studies, political science, sociology, and beyond who have an interest in understanding and addressing the impact AI, algorithms, and misinformation have on social media and society.

This book presents a selection of articles published over the past 20 years by the Journal of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism. As the journal marks its 20th anniversary, this collection reflects on its contributions to scholarship and practice in policing, intelligence and counter terrorism studies. Over the past 20 years, the journal has provided a critical platform for interdisciplinary research, bringing together academics and practitioners to address some of the most pressing challenges in security studies.

The selected articles demonstrate the journal's dedication to advancing knowledge through empirical research, theoretical innovation and policy-relevant analysis. Together, they reflect the journal as a platform for pioneering research that asks new questions, advocates new solutions for old problems, promotes collaboration, and looks to the future of the field. The journal's focus has been not only to advance academic knowledge but to provide evidence-based solutions for policing, intelligence and counter terrorism practitioners and policymakers. This book highlights the journal's role in shaping debates and cementing a legacy of scholarship and impact.

This book is invaluable for graduate students, academics, and researchers in counter terrorism research, criminology, security studies, and public policy. It intersects with fields such as international relations, public administration, the sociology of crime, risk management, and homeland security studies, offering interdisciplinary perspectives on modern security governance and practice.

The chapters in this book were originally published in Journal of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism and are presented with a new Introduction.

Patterns of Transversal Governance offers the first comprehensive comparative account of how modern states restructure policymaking to address increasingly complex, cross-sectoral public problems. Drawing on an original dataset covering 13 OECD countries and four major policy fields, environment, health, migration, and unemployment, between 1980 and 2014, the book shows how governments have progressively adopted reforms that integrate policy goals and coordinate administrative organizations across traditional sectoral boundaries. The book introduces transversal governance as a conceptual lens for understanding this structural transformation; it argues that policy integration and administrative coordination have become essential responses to two powerful forces reshaping contemporary governance: the denationalization of authority through delegation to supranational, international, and subnational bodies, and the growing fragmentation of the state driven by New Public Management and specialized agencies. These dynamics do not hollow out national governments but often trigger efforts to recenter political authority through cross-cutting reforms. Through a combination of large-N statistical analyses and in-depth case studies of the United Kingdom and France, the book uncovers the political and institutional mechanisms behind transversal reforms and demonstrates how multilevel governance, partisan motivations, and problem pressure drive transversal governance reforms that integrated policy instruments and coordinate administrative organizations. Offering a unified theoretical framework, rich empirical evidence, and clear implications for both scholarship and practice, Patterns of Transversal Governance provides a groundbreaking understanding of how states adapt to govern in an era of complexity, interdependence, and multilevel politics. Transformations in Governance is a major academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, and environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states to supranational institutions, subnational governments, and public-private networks. It brings together work that advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars. The series is edited by Liesbet Hooghe and Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Walter Mattli of the University of Oxford. This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations.

This book examines how democracies worldwide are being challenged by populism, polarization, and the erosion of minority belonging. Democracies around the world are under strain. Elections are contested, courts politicized, minorities scapegoated, and the social bonds that hold diverse societies together are fraying. Why is this happening, and what can be done?

Bringing together scholars from five continents, this book examines how social solidarity-the often-invisible glue of democratic life-is being made, unmade, and remade in the twenty-first century. Drawing on case studies from India, Nigeria, Costa Rica, Kyrgyzstan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, and the United States, contributors trace two routes of democratic erosion: when institutions are designed in ways that concentrate power and exclude minorities, and when majority rule overrides the rights and belonging of those it should protect.

This is not a book of diagnoses alone. Each chapter pairs critical analysis with concrete remedies, ranging from electoral and constitutional reform to grassroots coalitions, interfaith alliances, and trauma-aware responses to political extremism. Together, the essays offer a toolkit for rebuilding democratic resilience in an age of polarization, populism, and contested belonging.

This book is essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners in political science, sociology, comparative politics, democracy studies, and conflict resolution. It will also appeal to policymakers, civil society organizations, and anyone concerned with the future of democratic governance and social cohesion in diverse societies.
The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Peace Review.

This book will consolidate and develop a body of knowledge for public-private partnership (PPP) project management that also captures, integrates, and showcases the latest international research and development on this important topic. Although used for centuries, PPP has been more widely adopted worldwide over the past three decades; especially in the aftermath of COVID-19, it is expected to grow even further. PPP projects have significantly different characteristics compared to traditionally procured public projects. The management of PPP projects is hence much more complex and has faced several challenges in recent years. It is essential that we consolidate the scattered knowledge on the field to date and develop it further to benefit from the potential of PPPs and achieve sustainability of the produced infrastructure and related services. To do so, this book will examine key issues in PPP project management and identify and harness the latest research studies and practices. It is a must-read for PPP researchers, financiers, project managers, consultants, policy makers, and any other participants including decision makers who are involved in PPP procurement and delivery.

This book examines Moving Target Defense (MTD) as a strategic and institutional response to the weaknesses of static cyber defence in democratic states.

Using Canada as the principal empirical case, and drawing comparisons with the United States, the UK and Australia, the book argues that adaptive denial is a governance problem before it is a technological one. It develops a framework for evaluating MTD against alliance interoperability, digital sovereignty, and democratic accountability, and examines real-world threats, including Chinese state-sponsored hacking groups such as Volt Typhoon, ransomware attacks on hospitals and pipelines, and foreign interference in democratic institutions. Bridging cybersecurity technology, national security policy, and democratic governance, this work provides practical insights for policymakers, security professionals, and scholars seeking to understand how liberal democracies can better protect themselves in an era of relentless digital competition.

This book will be of much interest to students of cyber-security, strategic studies, law and technology, and International Relations.

The Nigerian government has increasingly relied on the military for maintaining law and order and countering the proliferation of armed groups, many of which pose multidimensional threats to state authority, life, and property of the citizens, as well as national stability and prosperity. This book investigates the Nigerian military's evolution, justifications, considerations, capabilities, engagements, contributions, challenges, and possible ways forward.

The book considers the contexts, rationales, and merits of military deployment for internal security and law enforcement operations, as well as the tactical, strategic and policy dynamics, contributions, challenges, and recommendations. In addition to the Biafra, Niger Delta and Boko Haram wars, the book considers less publicised cases of military campaigns against armed bandits, neo-Biafra and Yoruba secessionists, ethno-religious and communal militias, illegal or informal miners and refiners, and smugglers. It also reflects on military partnerships with intelligence agencies and transcends army-ground-forces reductionism in providing airpower perspectives on Nigerian military operations.

This book will be an interesting read for policymakers, practitioners and researchers across the fields of political science, sociology, African studies, and military and security studies, as well as members of the public with an interest in Nigerian/African peace, conflict, and development.

This edited volume examines how states, NGOs, international and local actors in Africa compete for influence on the continent by engaging in what is known as grey zone, conflicts using methods and tactics that fall short of open war.

Drawing on examples of grey zone conflicts from across the continent, the book shows how tactics such as disinformation, cognitive warfare, cyber operations, the strategic use of private military companies, sanctions, food and infrastructure deals, and election interference are used to generate political, strategic and economic outcomes without resorting to the open use of military force. It explains these examples in clear language, linking them to Africa's history of colonialism, liberation struggles, often fragile governance and its nature as a place of contestation for foreign powers, and to today's wider struggle over global order and power competition. Organised in six thematic parts, the volume moves from core concepts and historical roots to detailed case studies of Russian and Chinese engagement, Western policies, regional alliances, and the battle for hearts and minds. Covering cases from the Sahel to Central Africa and beyond, this collection not only advances the global conversation on grey zone conflict but also reinforces Africa's role in shaping the future of strategic competition and contestation.

This volume will be of much interest to students of hybrid warfare, military and strategic studies, African politics, and Security Studies.

Governing Islam and Violent Radicalization explores the links between the governance of religious diversity and violent radicalization.

Drawing on interdisciplinary scholarship and case studies from both Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority settings, as well as case-studies centering transnational and non-state actors, this volume problematizes the often-simplistic portrayal of Islam as a unitary concept and explores the religious market of ideas where different religious groups, including governmental religious institutions, are seeking to preach their ideas. By bridging previously disconnected strands of research on religion governance and counter-radicalization, this book offers a nuanced analysis of the complex entanglements between Islam, state power, and violence.

The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of political science, religious studies, security studies, Middle Eastern studies, South-East Asian studies and European studies, as well as policymakers working in counter-terrorism, counter-radicalization, and religious governance. It will also appeal to general readers interested in the intersection of Islam, state power, and radicalization.

We commonly treat feasibility as non-negotiable when it comes to determining what we ought to do and pursue in political life and what justice requires, rejecting highly desirable claims simply because they appear to make infeasible demands and settling for less desirable but feasible alternatives. But what exactly does this preoccupation with feasibility amount to? Is it warranted? And what does it mean for political theory and political practice? In this first book-length treatment of the topic, Nicholas Southwood aims to answer these theoretically complex and practically consequential questions. He argues that there is indeed a valid "Feasibility Requirement" on central normative claims about politics, but that it needs to be fundamentally reinterpreted, by embracing a novel account of feasibility, the scope of the Feasibility Requirement, and its normative basis (that goes beyond the principle that "Ought" Implies "Can"). At the same time, Southwood argues that there remains a crucial role for modes of normative thinking about politics that are not subject to a Feasibility Requirement and that do not aspire to be constrained in this way. The result --what he calls Uncompromising Realism--is a nuanced theory of feasibility and its role in politics that can avoid the dangers of objectionable unworldliness and wishful thinking, on the one hand, and undue concession and compromise, on the other, with far-reaching implications for political theory and practice.
