Surrogacy unsettles established understandings of parenthood, family and reproduction. Many of the debates around surrogacy focus on ideas about what is best for children, yet regulation has largely been shaped without their direct engagement. Children's Voices in Surrogacy Law: Hearing the Views of Children on Surrogacy Law Reform addresses this gap through the first empirical study of its kind in the UK, presenting the perspectives of 54 children aged 8-18.

Drawing on group interviews and creative methods, the study captures the views of surrogate-born children, children of surrogates, and children without experience of surrogacy. It examines their perspectives on legal parenthood, payments, and access to information about origins, showing how existing legal frameworks are experienced and understood by those they most affect.

Authors Katherine Wade, Kirsty Horsey, and Zaina Mahmoud challenge prevailing assumptions and reveal the limits of adult-centred approaches. For decades following the failures of the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords constitutional debate in Canada appeared largely dormant. This situation has changed markedly in recent years. Since 2021 Alberta has held a provincial referendum proposing the abolition of equalization, Quebec and Saskatchewan have each unilaterally amended the 1867 Constitution Act, and a bilateral constitutional amendment concerning Saskatchewan has been proclaimed with the support of Parliament.

Amid the stagnation that has characterized constitutional amendment processes from the early 1990s onward, these developments are highly significant. They signal a renewed dynamism in Canadian constitutional politics driven by provincial action and warranting careful and systematic analysis. Bringing together contributions from leading experts, From Multilateral Failures to Unilateral Successes? maps the impacts of recent and ongoing constitutional developments. Chapters examine instances of unilateral provincial action, offer analytical perspectives on the broader implications of these developments for federal authority, and explore the conditions under which provincial unilateralism may succeed. This book examines the decision-making of the Court of Appeal, Criminal Division, of England and Wales in appeals against conviction through the lens of risk. This is achieved by normative evaluation of the concept of risk and how it is tolerated within the wider criminal justice system, and the implications of that tolerance for the Court of Appeal. This analysis involves consideration of recent Court decisions to further our understanding of its decision-making process, to advance the normative framework in this context, and to provide empirical support for the arguments presented. Ultimately the book argues that since the risk of injustice is tolerated elsewhere, there must exist a residual tolerance for injustice in the appeal system. The work makes a significant theoretical contribution to discourse on criminal appeals by linking the unsafety test to the general problem of uncertainty and risk taking. By doing so, it offers an insightful take on the purposes of criminal appeals and addresses concerns about decision-making in the Court of Appeal. In the realm of criminal law, critical criminology has set itself apart by challenging the field's role as a pillar sustaining capitalist order. Ideology and Punishment applies the Marxist concept of ideology to scrutinise the foundations of modern criminal law, exposing its function in reinforcing social hierarchies and maintaining inequalities. It argues for the necessity of social transformation, laying the groundwork for an activist criminology.

By critiquing the colonised reproduction of Global North perspectives on punishment, the concept of ideology urges scholars to construct an independent framework rooted in the lived realities of punishment in the Global South. This study examines how foundational principles of modern criminal law-developed by German legal scholars since the 18th century-have shaped the civil law tradition and been uncritically reproduced in Latin America. Drawing on contemporary critical traditions-including critical criminology, penal abolitionism, and southern and activist criminology-Cacicedo advocates for an activist criminology built on a materialist understanding of ideology.
