In today's complex and rapidly changing globe, understanding the link between social theory and social policy is crucial for addressing the diverse challenges that diverse societies face. This book aims to provide a thorough critical analysis of how social theory shapes social policy and how effective policies can be informed by theoretical frameworks emanating from history and the present.

This book is both important and significant: by bridging the gap between theory and policy, this book seeks to contribute to the development of evidence-based policies that promote social cohesion, social justice, and well-being. The book is one of the first to open up theoretical strategies and applicability to social policies.

This book explores the often-forgotten role of fathers of children with disabilities. Bridging the gap between disability studies, family studies, and gender studies, it uncovers men's perspective on caring for children with disabilities and presents examples of famous fathers, such as general Charles de Gaulle, film director Dan Habib, and scholars Michael Berube and Phil Ferguson. Drawing on interviews with fathers of children with disabilities, the author explores what makes a father a 'good father' and presents fatherhood as an intense and dynamic journey of discovery, experienced together with the children, as a process of 'becoming with'. The testimonies offer an insight into the lived experience of fathers and challenge the model of caring masculinity through a narrative approach, with the aim to answer burning questions: can we built research lines around the experiences of fathers? can we secure the father perspective within family research and within support services for families with children with disabilities? From the vantage point of rural grandparents' mediated structure of feelings, this book explores changing family intimacy and dynamics in contemporary rural China in relation to media. Based on a 10-month ethnography involving 18 rural families (live-in studies with 11), it explores how media technology and culture reconfigures desires, attachments, disappointments, and grievances in family life. It is estimated that around 300 million people worldwide live with a rare disorder today. What do patients and associations concerned by one of the 7,000 known rare diseases have in common, and what does rarity mean to them? This open access book analyses the ever-complex relationship between immigration and health in contemporary societies using the Spanish society as a case study. It addresses some of the main dimensions of migrant health in Spain, including migrant-specific vulnerability factors, health changes associated with time spent at the migratory destination, and differentiated problems of certain subpopulations of migrants. The book also examines some of the factors associated with migrant health and explores the mechanisms that might explain this nexus, such as early childhood development, adult and older age health conditions, health practices and coping skills, health culture, social support, physical environment, and access to medical care and health services. Throughout India, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) visit households in their communities to deliver essential health services and link community members with key health benefits. Like many other female Community Health Workers across the world, ASHAs are often portrayed as virtuous, passive volunteers, selflessly providing services to their neighbors.

The reality is more complicated and much more interesting. Drawing on ethnographic work in Rajasthan, Running on Hope follows ASHAs through striking personal transformations. From their positions as rural daughters-in-law-a particularly low-power position in Rajasthan-ASHAs have, over years of work, gained unprecedented autonomy for young rural women. They have also gained a deep understanding of what many argue is the exploitation involved in their low-ranking position in the health system. ASHAs often earn less than $100 per month for extensive work, well below the legal minimum wage.

To counter this, many ASHAs have joined unions-an endeavor that has ultimately proven disappointing: union leaders' desires for political advancement are often at odds with ASHAs' own needs. However, ASHAs do not have connections, money, or social power to organize effectively on their own, without a political patron. In Running on Hope, authors Svea Closser and Surendra Singh Shekhawat interview women who work as ASHAs to learn about their organizing goals, their roles in their community as conduits to health education and resources, and their hopes for a better future.

Nick Juravich and Steve Striffler edit a collection that examines the effects of the pandemic on workers. Sections of the book focus on specific impacts and government efforts to restructure the economy; the dramatic effect of the pandemic on the hospitality industry; educators' response on behalf of themselves and their students; frontline healthcare workers; and the innovative forms of labor organizing that emerged during and after COVID.

This book explores the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis on human service organizations from an international perspective. The pandemic is described as a "disruptive extreme event" that has resulted in extensive and intolerable physical, psychological, and material consequences for members and clients within human service organizations. The chapters in this volume highlight the need for organizations to strengthen their resilience, adapt to changing external circumstances, and continue to serve their missions effectively. They address the implications of a health and social pandemic on economic resilience, changes in work technologies, therapeutic intervention programs, human resources, organizational structure, and social media tools used by human service organizations. The eleven chapters of this volume cover seven countries representing diverse socio-political, cultural, and economic systems, ranging from the USA and the UK to Austria, Bangladesh, China, and Israel. The perspectives presented in these chapters offer a significant contribution to theory, research, and practice in the management of human service organizations during times of disruptive extreme events.

An ethnography of "silver backpackers" that offers a feminist perspective on what makes a good retirement in contemporary societies
The moniker "silver backpackers" refers to Japanese couples who, in their mid-fifties to seventies, move to Malaysia to enjoy their retirement. Recent scholarship on Japan has revealed how the gendered division of labor impacts the lives of middle-class workers and their families. But how do cultural values live on-or change-when these professionals retire from work, move on from identities built through salaried careers, and embark on a new phase of life? After Work takes up this question to focus on what comes after work, and in the process, expands our understanding of aging, gender, migration, and the future of work.
Based on fifteen months of fieldwork in Kuala Lumpur and employing a transnational feminist framework, After Work investigates moments of difference in the experiences of older women and men to examine patriarchal conversations that dominate ideas about contemporary retirement. Shiori Shakuto argues that anxiety around self and belonging in retirement are instigated by the capitalist labor regime and the discourse of successful aging, both of which devalue nonremunerated activities conducted at home. What is needed instead, she contends, is a re-valuation of key domestic activities-from caring for children to pursuing individual hobbies-so that "life" can be appreciated in its entirety.
Shakuto also takes into account the fact that this transnational retirement is set in Malaysia-a nation that Japan occupied during World War II and thereafter subject to decades of economic investment and resource exploitation by Japanese corporations. Highlighting how historical, cultural, and racialized complexities entangle with intimate relations in increasingly connected Asian countries while simultaneously acknowledging how the boundaries between work and life blur ever more in contemporary society, After Work complicates our perceptions of aging and a "good" retirement as well as our understandings of gender, migration, and the future of work as we know it.
