Drawing on extensive qualitative field research, the book provides a detailed account of the vulnerability of older adults in a coastal sub-district in Bangladesh. The analysis draws on in-depth interviews with older men and women, whose narratives provide a powerful perspective on life before, during, and after catastrophic weather events. These accounts reveal an ongoing cycle of vulnerability in which cyclones and floods not only destroy material assets such as homes and livelihoods but also cause profound physical and psychological trauma. The resulting disruption of social support networks, loss of income, and forced migration to survive further exacerbate their insecurity. The study identifies several major causes of vulnerability, including the geophysical exposure of the coastal region, the prevalence of non-resilient housing, profound income insecurity, and a high degree of dependence on family support systems. According to the World Health Organization, around 16% of the world?s population lives with a disability, and it is estimated that approximately 80% of them reside in the Global South. Nevertheless, research on persons with disabilities is typically limited to the Global North. This interdisciplinary volume, with contributions from psychology, sociology, history, linguistics, and development studies, addresses this discrepancy by providing new insights into disability in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. While recognizing the significance of the medical approach, the authors seek to expand existing frameworks by including social, cultural and human rights perspectives. In A World of Resistance, Assa Doron and Alex Broom draw on years of fieldwork in hospitals, in pharmacies, and on factory farms to examine the enormous social and environmental costs of overreliance on antibiotics. They show how an overtaxed healthcare system with limited oversight, widespread use of antibiotics in industrial agriculture, and the incessant dumping of pharmaceutical waste into waterways have created the ideal conditions for antibiotic-resistant microbes to grow.

As resistance spreads across India and beyond, Doron and Broom argue that the solution isn't to restrict access to antibiotics but to embrace forms of health education, indigenous practices, and policies grounded in social solidarity. The authors start by reviewing the precipitous increases in "deaths of despair" (suicide, drug overdoses, and alcohol-related deaths), as well as in suicidality, substance use disorder, and other mental health conditions. Their summary goes beyond that of Case and Deaton (in "Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism") by showing the full extent of the epidemic, across the entire array of mental health and substance use conditions. Zahniser and Rennebohm then explain the experience of distress and despair and how distress moves into despair, using depression, suicidality/suicide, and substance use disorders/overdoses as examples. Finally, to close out Part 1, they explicate the various layers of vulnerability to distress and despair and why the loss of social capital and strong social ties best explains the precipitous increases. Part 2 is the heart of the book, and it lays out 7 pathways to reversing the epidemic. These include evidence-based and best-practice approaches to: (1) providing effective natural, community-based support; (2) developing community collaborations between mental health providers and other community organizations (using examples from mental health-faith community partnerships); (3) taking evidence-based prevention and early intervention to scale; (4) integrating mental health into primary health care; (5) developing fully-functioning Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics; (6) ensuring the availability of intensive recovery support services for children and adults; and (7) providing outreach and engagement services to the most vulnerable community members. This book is novel in that it provides insights into the effects of information provision on people's perceptions and behavioral changes during the pandemic, and provides empirical evidence on its mechanisms and policy implications from different perspectives. It compares the different characteristics and effectiveness of information sources from the government, the news media, professionals in the field (health care workers), non-professional ordinary people, and the close environment, including family, friends, and colleagues. The consumer externality is the key concept in the analyses, as it identifies the effects of one's own consumption on the actions of others in constrained situations such as pandemics. Data from surveys conducted in Japan, the United States, and Germany suggest some implications for policymaking during a pandemic. One is related to differences in the characteristics of information. For example, information from experts in the field is perceived differently than information from other sources. Similarly, information from authorized organizations such as government and the news media remains critical in an emergency. Another relates to behavioral changes caused by the provision of information. Clearly, the effects of information on behavior change depend on the characteristics of the activity being addressed. We examine the effects on out-of-home and in-home activities during the pandemic, both of which focus on leisure activities, and show that the effects of information on each activity are quite different. Overall, this book provides empirical evidence for the importance of information dissemination policies that work with appropriate information providers and take into account country-specific attitudes to information.
