Authenticity has become a key concept in the culture of history and memory in the 21st century. This open access book explores the multifaceted nature of 'historical authenticity' and its uses in various academic, museum, and historical-cultural contexts. In 70 alphabetically-arranged articles, Historical Authenticity explains how authenticity can enable individuals and societies to locate themselves within time and space and the associated challenges.
The book shows how today's attitudes to the past are characterised by an intense striving for historical authenticity - a phenomenon which began to assume new potency in the last third of the 20th century. It considers how this manifests itself in practical terms, for example, in the value attached to 'authentic voices' from the past, 'authentic objects' in museums, collections and archives, or to 'authentic places' - be they historic buildings, urban architectural ensembles or memorial sites. The volume also reflects on how this desire for the 'real', the 'genuine' and the 'original' has changed over the centuries , and why it is nowadays so frequently linked with a longing to experience history 'first-hand', as evidenced in the degree of public attention accorded to surviving witnesses of historic events or the popularity of historical re-enactments. 'Historical Authenticity' convincingly makes the case that the analysis of academic, cultural, institutional and political authentification processes is central to a critical understanding of how the past is perceived in the present.

A sweeping survey of sexuality in Europe from the ancient Greeks to the present, Desire: A History of European Sexuality follows changing attitudes to two major concepts of sexual desire-desire as dangerous, polluting, and disorderly, and desire as creative, transcendent, even revolutionary-through the major turning points of European history.

Chronological in structure, and wide ranging in scope, Desire addresses such topics as sex in ancient Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, sexual contact and culture clash in Spain and colonial Mesoamerica, new attitudes toward sexuality in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and sex in Bolshevik Russia and Nazi Germany. The book introduces the concept of "twilight moments" to describe activities seen as shameful or dishonorable, but which were tolerated when concealed by shadows, and integrates the history of heterosexuality with same-sex desire, as well as exploring the emotions of love and lust alongside the politics of sex and personal experiences.

This new edition has been updated to include more on trans histories and sexual identities in the context of the recent multiplication of sexual and gender identities. It also brings in more on materialism, embodiment, and the history of emotion. In addition to the new chapter on imperialism from the second edition, the third edition now includes an additional chapter on early medieval Christianity and Islam, concentrating on the tensions between mysticism and regulation. The book concludes with a new chapter that explores how activists from the 1970s onward linked sexual pleasure to bodily care, particularly in the contexts of abortion, AIDS, and gender-affirming trans healthcare.

Drawing on a rich array of sources, including poetry, novels, pornography, and film, as well as court records, autobiographies, and personal letters, and written in a lively, engaging style, Desire remains an essential resource for scholars and students of the history of European sexuality, as well as women's and gender history, social and cultural history, and LGBTQ history.

Popes and Papal Rome, 1503-1655 is the first book-length account of the early modern papal court in English. As well as bringing together art historical, social, and political studies in several languages, it contains a wealth of primary source material, such as advice manuals for cardinals and aspiring courtiers, accounts of Roman festivals, reports of visiting ambassadors and news reports from Rome deposited in the Vatican library.

The book argues that during the 16th and 17th centuries, popes were conscious to varying degrees of their responsibilities to conserving and enhancing the status of the monarchy as something larger than themselves as individuals or their families, and as such they exhibited some characteristics of dynastic monarchies. Toby Osborne explores how the culture of the papal court and the ways in which it functioned as a point of contact between the ruler, certain elites, and other princes not only had similarities with dynastic states, but also set the standard for court life around Europe.

By bringing to light recent scholarship written by continental historians, Popes and Papal Rome, 1503-1655 represents an important contribution to the scholarly endeavour to better understand the political culture of the papal states and the workings of the papal monarchy. As such, it will be illuminating reading for all students and scholars interested in early modern court history.

Combining ethics, history, and psychology, this book examines historical and contemporary warrior cultures, arguing that today's warriors need a code to navigate the moral line between soldier and killer.

Exploring the roots of military ethics, this third edition furthers author Shannon French's argument that modern troops need a code to shield their humanity as they endure the horrors of war, including updated first and last chapters addressing the need for warrior codes throughout history and in today's military climate. Stories of ancient Greek and Roman soldiers, Chinese warrior monks, Vikings, Celts, Japanese samurai, medieval European knights, Islamic warriors, and Zulu warriors combine with contemporary perspectives on modern day warfare's latest technologies and power structures to present a truly global and timeless case for the exercise of restraint in warfare-primarily for the benefit of those doing the fighting.

A new chapter on the famous Zulu warrior Chief Shaka makes the important distinction between a warrior and a strongman. Incorporating philosophy with history, religion, anthropology, sociology, and moral psychology, French addresses concepts which resonate within and beyond military service. She also presents thoughtful answers to complex questions such as: Why should one side of a conflict show restraint if the other side does not? How can a command climate become corrupted? What is the difference between a warrior and a murderer, or a terrorist, or a strongman? How do changes in technology affect the conduct of war?

French provides analysis grounded in her own decades of work with and for members of the U.S. military, as well as her extensive, international scholarship in military ethics. It is a must-read book for anyone interested in how wars can be fought ethically and how warriors can be spared the worst moral injury that comes from betraying their own chosen core values.

Heroes, Traitors, and Survivors in the Imperial Borderlands redefines Southeastern Europe's role in modern military history. Long dismissed as a "powder keg" of violence, the region emerges here as a crucial laboratory of military innovation, governance, and state formation in the early 20th century. Spanning the Ottoman Empire, Habsburg Monarchy, Montenegro, Serbia, and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, the book traces how mobilization operated as a negotiated process between state elites, military brokers, and local communities rather than as a purely coercive act.

Using a transimperial and multiscalar approach, this book examines how small states mobilized vast armies with unprecedented speed, thereby often outpacing larger empires and balancing between acceptance, endurance, and refusal while employing pragmatic tools such as land reform, tax relief, and social welfare to secure participation. By repositioning Southeastern Europe as a laboratory of military mobilizations, Heroes, Traitors, and Survivors in the Imperial Borderlands highlights the overlooked roles of women, non-combatants, and military entrepreneurs in shaping wartime and post-war societies.

Richly grounded in multilingual archival research, it offers a new lens on the relationship between empire, nation, and militarization, appealing to scholars and advanced students of European, military, and (trans)imperial history, as well as general readers interested in the global dimensions of modern warfare.

Magnus Maximus and the Priscillianists analyses the Priscillianist controversy from the perspective of the imperial government, focusing on developments in imperial ideology and laws against sorcery, sexual immorality, and treason over the course of the fourth century in order to explain why Priscillian's actions appeared so sinister to officials.

A comparison of these laws to subcultural and religious activity in Hispania reveals diverse social norms and expectations often overlooked in scholarship. The interactions with and between officials during the controversy illustrate the methods of communication, varying personalities, interpersonal conflicts, and interconnectedness of those involved. These interactions collectively reveal that the Priscillianists exhibited the sort of "criminal" behaviours that had preoccupied emperors since the First Tetrarchy, which were repeatedly dealt with through mass trials. The Priscillianist trials, when compared to earlier fourth-century mass trials, indicate a high degree of consistency in how emperors dealt with perceived bad behaviour in this period of tremendous changes.

This book is essential for scholars and students of Late Antiquity, Roman history, and religious studies, particularly those interested in imperial governance, legal history, and the intersection of law and religion. It is also valuable for researchers examining subcultural dynamics and the broader social and political contexts of the fourth century.

Through compelling case studies, vivid snapshots and detailed individual profiles, this book explores women's public activism as well as their less frequently discussed supportive roles that underpinned and sustained dissident movements. It draws extensively on the Chronicle of Current Events, and similar documentation from Ukraine and Lithuania, as well as investigative reports, anthologies of dissident writings and contemporary newspaper accounts. Additionally, it incorporates published interviews and testimonies of several prominent women dissidents, alongside the more extensive memoirs of their better- known male colleagues, offering a nuanced perspective on the often- overlooked contributions of Soviet women and the reasons for their neglect in the historiography of dissent.

Women in the Soviet Dissident Movements is essential reading for students and scholars of Soviet history, women's history and political activism.

This book traces the history of translation in the Early Modern Low Countries (roughly the modern-day Netherlands and Belgium), from around 1550 to around 1700. It focuses on the various roles played by translation in different contexts.

In the latter half of the sixteenth century translation stoked religious conflict and the civil war that eventually divided the territory into two ideologically opposed political entities. After 1600, it buttressed the economic wealth and overseas expansion of the Dutch Republic and assisted in transforming the southern Netherlands into a Counter-Reformation bastion. Throughout the period, translation fostered new knowledge as well as artistic innovation, it fuelled political propaganda, stimulated personal piety and was a highly signficant factor in commercial publishing. It enabled some of the cultural monuments of the age and helped lay the groundwork for the Radical Enlightenment. This book pays attention to both interpreting and written translation, to material as well as intellectual aspects, to social and regional divisions and to the area's linguistic complexity - covering translation not just into Dutch but also into Latin, French and Spanish.

It will appeal to researchers and advanced students interested in Early Modern Europe, multilingualism and the history of culture and translation.

This book moves towards the development of more inclusive practices in the handling, management, and debate of Jewish cultural heritage in Europe. The volume presents dynamic explorations of current Jewish subjects across a range of positionalities. It uses diverse methodologies such as ethnographic and sociological fieldwork, research creation, and artistic response.

Deploying "queer" in relation to Jewish heritage in the double sense of "queering" as a critical and reparative process and of a "queer" spectrum of minority positionalities, this volume demonstrates their multifaceted and polydimensional resonances in the contemporary European context. The contributions offer in-depth explorations highlighting a diversity of marginalised Jewish positionalities and initiatives to develop inclusive, polyvalent, and ultimately iridescent approaches to Jewish heritage in Europe. It explores more inclusive conceptualisations and applications of cultural heritage and associated policies, shedding light on how Queer Jewish subjects make heritage as they create and recreate cultural and historical meanings across a wide spectrum of identity, belonging, and artistic engagement.

The book will appeal to scholars and students of queer studies, critical heritage studies, and Jewish studies, as well as to researchers in the fields of ethnomusicology, artistic research/research creation, and museum studies. Its insights will be valuable to civil society actors and thought leaders from queer Jewish communities, as well as to heritage professionals who wish to develop more nuanced and inclusive strategies to refine current approaches in their fields.

This book explores the resilience of the Spanish Monarchy by uncovering the practices that sustained Philip IV's monarchy as a major diplomatic power between 1648 and 1660. Adopting an innovative approach, the study does not evaluate whether the resilience of the Spanish Monarchy was a success or a failure, but rather how it came about.

Based on archival and library research in Spain, Belgium, Denmark, and Sweden, and drawing on concepts from multilingual historiography and sociology, the book examines in detail the diplomatic missions of Bernardino de Rebolledo in Copenhagen (1648-1659) and Antonio Pimentel in Stockholm (1652-1654) and offers a cultural history of political, organizational, and diplomatic practices in a period marked by uncertainty. The book also considers the confessional dimension of diplomacy and sheds new light on the Spanish Monarchy's relations with the monarchies of Denmark-Norway and Sweden.

Providing valuable insights for historians of the Spanish Monarchy and for scholars of premodern diplomacy, the book offers the first comprehensive examination of the Nordic dimension of foreign policy under Philip IV and proposes a new way to understand the Spanish Monarchy's resilience.

Jerusalem in the Time of the Crusades combines archaeological and historical evidence, together with first-hand accounts written by visiting pilgrims, to provide a multifaceted description of one of the most important periods in the history of Jerusalem.

The book has been fully updated with the results of the latest excavations and research. Much of the new material has previously only been available in Hebrew or in unpublished or difficult-to-access studies. Four new chapters-'Pilgrims in the Holy City', 'Institutions of Commerce and Finance', 'Frankish Jerusalem in the Thirteenth Century' and 'Frankish Epigraphy in Jerusalem'-make this the most comprehensive survey of Jerusalem in the Crusader period. The book is divided into three parts. The first explores the history of the city in the Crusader period and its unique society, almost exclusively Christian and largely Western (Frankish). The second presents the rich architectural evidence for Jerusalem under Crusader rule. The final part considers examples of Crusader art in the city and contemporary representations of the city and its buildings.

Generously illustrated, this book is primarily for students and scholars of Jerusalem, the Crusader period and medieval pilgrimage, as well as being a useful guide for the interested reader to a city at the centre of international and religious interest and conflict today.

Discover the textures of everyday life in colonial Hawai'i-from missionary households and sugar plantations to hula schools and military bases-through the eyes of the people who lived it.

Daily Life in Colonial Hawai'i offers a rich, ground-level view of life in the Hawaiian Islands during the complex and often turbulent colonial period. Spanning the decades between the arrival of American missionaries in the 1820s and the islands' eventual admission as the 50th U.S. state in 1959, this book explores how colonialism reshaped Hawaiian society-and how Hawaiians and immigrants from around the world adapted, resisted, and made lives of their own.

Organized thematically, each chapter examines a different facet of everyday experience, including missionary family routines, plantation labor and economic systems, the rise of public and private schooling, cultural practices such as hula and lei-making, religious transformations, military presence, and the birth of tourism. Drawing on a wide array of primary sources, Daily Life in Colonial Hawai'i brings into focus the stories of Native Hawaiians, Chinese and Japanese laborers, Portuguese immigrants, Filipino plantation workers, and American settlers navigating a world of rapid change and contested power.

A full-color examination of 50 fascinating and important archaeological discoveries from prehistoric Europe.

Countless archaeological sites and artefacts relating to the diverse prehistoric peoples who occupied the landscapes of Europe thousands of years ago, have been unearthed, either by archaeologists, or by lucky individuals who stumbled across them by chance. Prehistoric Europe: 50 Great Discoveries examines a small, but carefully chosen selection of sites and artefacts from among this abundance of archaeological evidence, all of which are remarkable, and provides fascinating insights into Europe's distant past and its long-lost prehistoric societies. These 50 discoveries cover some sixty thousand years of European prehistory, beginning in the Middle Paleolithic ('Old Stone Age), the time of our enigmatic ancient cousins, the Neanderthals, and ending in the Iron Age, the time of 'Celtic' society, and marking the last chapter in the remarkable story of prehistoric Europe. Lying between the Middle Paleolithic and the Iron Age discoveries are those from Mesolithic ('Middle Stone Age'), Neolithic ('New Stone Age'), Chalcolithic ('Copper Age'), and Bronze Age Europe. The Mesolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age, mark the time of Europe's final hunter-gatherer societies, its first farming communities, and the emergence of metalworking, respectively.

Throughout human history there are arguably few plants that have had such a significant impact on the lives of people as tobacco. Yet, despite its unparalleled dissemination across human societies, histories of the plant, its use and impact have been dominated by Western European experiences, and based upon a relatively narrow span of sources and records. This open access collection readdresses this imbalance, showcasing a range of interdisciplinary approaches to decentre unilinear, Western and economically-focused accounts of tobacco.

From archaeological analysis of bone and dental records, to anthropological considerations of material culture and historical investigations into tobacco's role in the expansion of colonial power and the slave trade, this book employs a range of methods and sources to broaden our understanding of the impact of tobacco on health, population, genetics, consumption, economics, trade, gender and ethnicity. With case studies in North Africa, India and Sri Lanka alongside the Americas and Europe, it seeks to broaden perspectives on the use of tobacco beyond the West, and combine disciplinary methods to better assess its enduring impact on our species.

This volume offers a comprehensive analysis of transatlantic relations throughout the long 20th century.

Reflecting on the tensions between identity and alterity, which have informed the relationship between Europe and the United States since the colonial era, The Atlantic Alliance in the Long 20th Century takes a transnational approach to situate Euro-American history within a global context and provide an understanding of how the Atlantic alliance has been built, maintained and challenged.

Centring on the formation of "Atlantica", a political and security community that emerged after World War II, it raises critical questions about the nature and manifestation of American hegemony in Western Europe; what were the foundational pillars of this community, and how did the balance of power evolve within it? Also exploring the interplay between transatlantic relations and European integration, it asks how the EU and EC fitted into this Atlantic community, and seeks to understand whether the Atlanticist vision and European project had common goals, or were their processes antagonistic?

In examining the tensions between Atlanticism and Europeanism, and whether their approaches were independent or convergent, Bitumi sets out what this means for contemporary relations today. Arguing that the three foundational pillars of the Atlantic order- democracy, deregulated capitalism and cosmopolitan internationalism- have faced significant strain since the 2008 financial crisis, this book reflects on the origins of this crisis and the challenge it poses to the ongoing unity and cohesion of the Atlantic Alliance, and the trajectory of the Euro-American relationship.

This book examines the ways in which Germany's Hitler Youth generation has attempted to untangle its emotions and deal with questions relating to individual complicity and innocence. As the world is currently facing a new wave of fascism and misinformation, there is much to be gained from improving our understanding of how and why young people who believed far-right ideologies transitioned to a new system governed by democratic values. Tiia Sahrakorpi explores how individuals not only remember, but represent and negotiate contentious pasts.

Drawing on an unprecedentedly large corpus of life narrative writings by the Hitler Youth Generation - comprising some 50 published and 65 unpublished memoirs - from North America and Germany, Emotions, Subjectivities and Memories of the Hitler Youth Generation addresses a range of themes that lie at the intersection of memory, emotion, tactical agency, and social and political change. Whilst the book focuses on the Hitler Youth generation's writings and modern Germany in particular, its overarching goal is to provide readers with an understanding of how applying a history of emotions analysis to representations of childhood memories can offer novel insights into the histories of fascism and the Second World War.

This new volume edited by two significant scholars of Italian history and politics offers students and scholars a sweeping overview of the modern history of a country that has played a crucial role in the history of Europe over the past two centuries.

A team of experts scrutinises the main political, cultural, and socio-economic features and the historical "turning points" of this still relatively young state. It also explores the forces behind the unification of Italy in the 1860s, the rise of fascism under Benito Mussolini, the hammer blows of both world wars, the impact of the Cold War, and the modernisation of Italian society and high levels of politicisation in national life through recent decades, including the Silvio Berlusconi years and the re-emergence of right-wing politics.

English Demonologies presents the first comprehensive study of theoretical writings on witchcraft in England during the early modern period. It is also the first work to integrate the much wider understanding of the Devil - "demonology" - with the more specific, complex and troubled attempts by English Protestant thinkers to develop theories of witchcraft.

Ideas about the Devil pervaded Protestant thought in Elizabethan and Stuart England, emphasizing his role as an unseen spirit of temptation and falsehood, as well as the promoter of counterfeit religion. By examining the work of writers on witchcraft from Reginald Scot and George Gifford in the 1580s to Francis Hutchinson and Richard Boulton in the early eighteenth century, this book demonstrates how conventional assumptions about the prince of darkness both underpinned and challenged contemporary conceptions of the crime.

This book reveals the contours and continuities of English thought on the subject, including a commitment to the doctrine of divine providence as an explanation for suffering, an emphasis on the Devil's role as tempter and deceiver, and an awareness of the problems of finding evidence for preternatural crimes. It also identifies an important turn towards the empirical investigation of evil spirits in the later seventeenth century.

English Demonologies is essential reading for all students and scholars of the history of witchcraft and early modern religious thought.

This book reveals how the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) has systematically transformed religious messaging into a strategic tool of warfare, supporting Russian military objectives while undermining Ukrainian resistance.

It introduces an innovative interdisciplinary framework merging faith diplomacy with wartime public diplomacy theory, enhanced by framing analysis. This pioneering approach offers scholars a powerful new lens for examining religious communication during armed conflicts worldwide and provides rare insights into grassroots clerical collaboration with Russian forces. Drawing from extensive analysis across eight Ukrainian dioceses of the Moscow Patriarchate, the author documents how local priests and monks actively supported Russian militant operations through carefully crafted theological messaging.

It will be essential reading for scholars of religious studies, war studies, international relations, and anyone examining the intersection of faith and geopolitical conflict.

This book introduces students to the key concepts of women's history, gender as a category of analysis, and the history of feminism. Spanning the late 19th century to the present day, each chapter highlights major themes of the particular time period right across Europe before concluding with a short bibliography.

Whilst covering some familiar narratives in a broadly chronological fashion, Jennifer A. Miller introduces new actors, themes, and conclusions based on the most recent scholarship that further enriches our collective understanding women's history in modern Europe. Miller presents a Europe of diversity from ethnic and religious perspectives that has also been sorely lacking until now. European colonialism, the suffrage movements, the World Wars and the Holocaust, the postwar period, the Cold War and even very recent history are all closely examined in an essential volume for anyone interested in the European female experience of the last 150 years.

Aquileia is the largest archaeological site in Northern Italy, which once stood at the geo-political crossroad of cultural exchanges between Italy, the central-eastern Mediterranean and continental Europe. This book explores its beginnings as a Latin frontier colony which, over time, became a flourishing commercial centre of a cosmopolitan nature. By the end of the Imperial Age, it once again became the gateway to Italy, reaffirming its strategic and military role at the time of the barbarian invasions and the spread of Christianity.

The archaeological discoveries and results of scientific research made over the last thirtyyears offer the reader an accessible and engaging history of the site that has existed from the 8th century BCE to the present day. The concluding chapters are dedicated to the rediscovery of the ancient city, its political use during Fascism and the modern investments that transformed Aquileia into one of the major archaeological tourism centres in Italy.

A groundbreaking biography of Margaret Bondfield, the remarkable political pioneer and working-class woman who rose to become the first female Cabinet Minister in the 1929 Labour government.

Rising from modest semi-rural, semi-industrial origins in the West Country, and years of apprenticeship in shops in Brighton, Bondfield became the first woman to chair the TUC, one of the first female Labour MPs, the first woman to hold government office (1924) and in 1929, the first female Cabinet Minister.

Most of her life was lived in the public eye, but what lay behind her public achievements? In this remarkable book, historian Nan Sloane looks beyond the public facade to reveal Bondfield's hidden personal story, from her complicated personality with a difficult background, a private life which was either secret or non-existent, and a lifelong struggle with imposter syndrome.

Drawing on newly uncovered archival material, including Bondfield's own diaries, this is a fresh and vitally needed reassessment of Margaret Bondfield's influential life and contribution. A vital and timely biography that restores Bondfield to her rightful and prominent place in British political history.

Preacher-Poets demonstrates that early modern sermons had a larger impact on early modern literary texts and culture than previously assumed, analyzing the role of gender in theological and non-theological texts. This book argues that the sermon genre was a critical force in early modern culture by illuminating its role in shaping literary texts and examining the role of gender in order to connect sermons to the broader early modern cultural discourse.

This project analyzes the works of canonical "preacher-poets" such as George Herbert, John Donne, and John Bunyan, alongside the devotional writings of less-studied women, including Anna Walker, Katherine Austen, Margaret Hoby, and Mary Rich. Importantly, the sermon genre also offers insights into the textual contributions of women in early modern England. Women's sermon notes and devotional writings often replicated the sermon genre's features, challenging assumptions that Protestant theology uniformly perpetuated patriarchal norms. Rather, sermons provided a framework within which women engaged actively with Protestantism. This book also further situates sermons within the broader performative landscape by connecting them to the works of Ben Jonson and William Shakespeare, revealing the sermon genre's cultural impact in seventeenth-century England.

While the early modern sermon has gained some traction in literary studies, it has yet to be discussed at length as a major influence on early modern literature and culture. This book should be of interest to scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate students of early modern literature, history, theology, and gender studies.

This interdisciplinary edited collection reconsiders how sacrificial ideas - encompassing guilt, justice, punishment, atonement, and community formation - shaped debates over sovereignty, legal authority, religious identity, and the cultural imagination in early modern political theology.

Major works in Reformation and early modern historiography still tend to overlook how deeply intertwined religion, politics, and literary culture were in this period, often framing secular modernity as the product of a steady cultural break from religion. These essays juxtapose early modern understandings of sacrifice and sovereignty with modern debates, revealing how foundational the category of sacrifice was to both religious and political discourse. From conflicts between Catholics and Protestants to the contested meanings of martyrdom, from legal and inquisitorial texts to travel narratives, poetry, and drama, this volume traces how sacrificial language structured early modern visions of collective life. Engaging a wide range of confessions and traditions - magisterial, dissenting, and non-Christian alike - it offers a fresh perspective on the formation of early modern communities and reopens the question of how religion and literature contributed to the making of modernity, challenging familiar stories of secularisation.

This book will be of interest to intellectual historians and literary scholars, particularly those studying the interrelations between early modern religion and politics.

A teacher and minister, Thomas Bog Slade, was a prominent advocate for education regardless of gender or class in nineteenth-century Georgia, altering the lives of many and the future of the state.

Thomas Bog Slade was one of the most important reformers in the history of education in nineteenth-century Georgia, yet remains little known to modern students of the subject, especially regarding his significance to the education of women. Born in North Carolina, Slade lived the bulk of his life in Georgia, first as an attorney and then as a servant of the public working for the common good. He founded two schools for girls in Clinton and Columbus, Georgia, was one of the first faculty members of Wesleyan College, in Macon, and led the earliest association of Georgia teachers, campaigning for tax-supported public schools that would be free to all Georgia children regardless of gender and class. Slade was also a Baptist minister who lived the values he professed. He resigned a job as professor over denominational sectarianism but then withdrew from being too exclusive in his own Baptist denomination. This is a story about female education and its connection to the religious history of Georgia as demonstrated through one man, his family, and the thousands of young women from across the country whose lives were changed and went on to continue Slade's passion and spirit for education into their own families and further generations.

Gaius Julius Caesar is one of the most influential men to have ever lived. He is inescapable as a figure of power and dominance and may be experienced directly and indirectly in myriad ways. Every day, people around the world measure their leaders against him, whether consciously or unconsciously. Political and military leaders may be praised or condemned for similarities to him. Even the Pope, as pontifex maximus, holds a position that evokes Caesar's religious role in ancient Rome. Students and others read his accounts of the Gallic War and the Civil War and wonder about the contents of lost speeches and letters and other works. His calendar continues to govern our lives as thoroughly as any idea or institution possibly could. His portraits are somehow recognizable to those who have never studied them formally. His name evokes feelings of awe in people who have little detailed knowledge about why that should be so. His assassination on the Ides (15th) of March 44 BCE is repeated continuously on stages in every corner of the globe.

Julius Caesar: A Reference Guide to His Life and Works contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has cross-referenced entries on Caesar's family and early career; his political and military achievements, including events in Rome and beyond, especially the major campaigns; his dictatorship years; and his assassination. Achievements in literature, oratory, architecture, portraiture, and intellectual discourse are given generous attention, as are prominent ideas and personalities of the age of Caesar.
