Archaeology in the Global Cold War explores archaeological practices, theories, and methods, as well as social networks and knowledge circulation in Eastern and Western Europe and beyond during the Cold War (1947-1989).

Drawing on archival sources, published works, and personal recollections, this volume examines archaeology under the Cold War at a broad international scale and from a range of thematic, theoretical, and methodological perspectives. It is structured in five parts. The first examines how political ideology and propaganda shaped archaeological knowledge production. The second explores the relationship between Cold War science policy and archaeological practice. The third analyses the role of institutions and individual actors. Addressing theory and method, the fourth part considers developments such as aerial photography and the work of influential figures. The volume concludes with personal accounts by archaeologists reflecting on their professional experiences, integrating lived experience with broader historical analysis.

This volume is for archaeologists interested in the history of their discipline, historians of science and the humanities, and scholars of contemporary history working on the intellectual history of the Cold War.

Felix's Vita Sancti Guthlaci, composed towards the middle of the eighth century at the request of King AElfwald of East Anglia (r. 713-49), is the earliest substantial literary work from the middle kingdoms of pre-Viking England. Written in Latin and modelled on the ornate style of Aldhelm, the Vita offers a vivid account of Guthlac, a Mercian noble turned hermit who died at Crowland in 714. It stands as both a literary landmark and an important historical source for early Anglo-Saxon life.

The Vita also shaped the development of vernacular hagiography, notably inspiring two major Old English poems preserved in the Exeter Book. Though the original Mercian translation is lost, its legacy endures in the 'Gates of Hell' sequence reworked in the Vercelli Book, in the fuller Life at the end of a collection of AElfric's writings, and in entries both for Guthlac and his sister Pege in the Old English Martyrology.

This volume presents, for the first time, a complete text of Felix's Vita together with the Old English Homily and Life, offering a comprehensive view of Guthlac's cult across languages and centuries. Artists and Intellectuals in Exile in 1970s West Berlin explores how displacement and exile became catalysts for artistic and intellectual innovation during a pivotal period in European cultural history.

Drawing on extensive archival research, fieldwork, and interviews, the book examines how exiled and migrant artists - including Guenter Brus, Romy Haag, Anne Jud, Marwan Kassab-Bachi and Akbar Behkalam - transformed the divided city of West Berlin into a crucible of creative resistance. Blending art history, urban studies, feminist and queer theory and migration scholarship, the book develops a new understanding of exile as a creative condition - a mode of living and making that redefines belonging, identity and the politics of space. Through close readings of performance, painting, film and collective practices, it reveals how marginality and dislocation generated new aesthetic forms and transnational solidarities.

This open access book examines how Piedmont, in early modern Italy, developed silk production into a distinctive system of technological and social innovation. It explores the ways in which this fragile yet economically significant material shaped regional strategies of adaptation and growth, linking local expertise to the expanding networks of global trade. Across ten chapters, the author traces the evolution of a complex production ecosystem, from small workshops to royal manufactories, and considers how technology, policy, and labour interacted to sustain the silk economy. Particular attention is given to the contributions of women, migrants, and apprentices, whose work underpinned both the aesthetics of fashion and the practical mechanisms of manufacture. As political and economic transformations unfolded across eighteenth-century Europe, silk became a lens through which to examine tensions between tradition and change, and between vulnerability and resilience. By situating Piedmont within broader European processes, the book demonstrates that innovation emerged not solely from institutional or technological breakthroughs, but from the craft of making, the capacity to adapt, and the steady labour of human hands.

Verschwoerungstheorien sind keine Eigenheit der Moderne. Vielmehr gab es sie bereits in der griechisch-roemischen Antike. In der spaeten roemischen Republik und dem fruehen Prinzipat waren Verschwoerungstheorien normal und weit verbreitet; im Gegensatz zur Gegenwart wurden sie nicht prinzipiell infrage gestellt und kritisiert.

Anhand sorgfaeltig kontextualisierender Fallstudien zum Bundesgenossenkrieg, zu ciceronischen Reden und zu Caesars Ermordung untersucht diese Arbeit, wie antike roemische Verschwoerungstheorien gestaltet und eingesetzt wurden und welche politischen Auswirkungen ihre Verwendung im Rahmen der politischen Kultur der spaeten roemischen Republik hatten. Die Analyse verschiedener Quellen aus der fruehen Kaiserzeit zeigt zudem, welche Veraenderungen sich durch den Uebergang zum Kaisertum ergaben. Insgesamt werden so Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede antiker und moderner Verschwoerungstheorien deutlich, woraus sich Schlussfolgerungen bezueglich der weiteren interdisziplinaeren Erforschung des Phaenomens ergeben.

This book offers a novel approach to the study of the Roman imperial cult, disrupting the traditional Eurocentric narrative and tendency to relativise the cult's religious dimension in favour of its political implications. Instead, this collection argues for understanding the imperial cult within diverse local contexts, where it evolved through intricate interactions with existing religious traditions and institutions. Consequently, this volume also contends that the often-promoted, singular narrative of the imperial cult fails to capture its complexity and multipolar nature, making it essential to speak of imperial cults in the plural.

This book examines the cult's flexibility and regional specificity through epigraphic numismatic, literary and archaeological evidence from Greece, Hispania (Baetica and Lusitania), Asia Minor, Italy, the Lower Danube region, Crete and Cyrene, Egypt and Germania, from the first century BCE to the fourth century CE. These sources reveal that the imperial cult was deeply embedded in local religious and social fabrics, while also engaging with distinct socio-political conditions and impacting various religious discourses, including those of Christian authors. By focusing on the local adaptations and religious innovations that characterised the imperial cult, the book advocates for a more nuanced and context-sensitive analysis.

This book examines a military occupation famous for institutional changes, state building, and Russia's military and political endeavours in Eastern Europe. However, these topics are not the focus of this book. Instead, it focuses on the actors and realities that are fundamental to the idea of military occupation, namely the armed forces, their deployment, and their interaction with the local population and authorities. At the same time, this book is not a work of purely military history, but also one of social history. It explores how military occupation influenced the everyday life of the people of Wallachia, how the experience of different social groups varied, how victims addressed their troubles before authorities, and how the latter reacted.

Die koenigliche Belehnung des Markgrafen von Meissen mit dem Herzog- und Kurfuerstentum Sachsen(-Wittenberg) 1423/25 bildet eine Zaesur fuer die Geschichte mittel- und norddeutscher Regionen, die bis in die Gegenwart nachwirkt.

Aus diesem Anlass fand 2023 in Meissen eine internationale Tagung statt, deren Ertraege in diesem Band publiziert werden. Die Beitraege behandeln 1) ?saechsisch“ gepraegte Fuerstentuemer, Koenig- und Kaiserreiche des Frueh- und Hochmittelmittelalters in Europa, die Traditionspotentiale fuer spaetere Herzoege und Kurfuersten von Sachsen entfalteten, 2) Aktivitaeten der Markgrafen von Meissen sowie der askanischen Herzoege von Sachsen im hoch- und spaetmittelalterlichen Reichsverband, 3) das Engagement der wettinischen Herzoege und Kurfuersten von Sachsen(-Meissen) inner- und ausserhalb des Heiligen Roemischen Reichs, 4) deren Traditionsstrategien fuer die Etablierung als saechsische Herzoege sowie 5) Aussen- und Binnenperspektiven auf die neuen saechsischen Fuersten und deren Herrschaftsbereiche. Dazu gehoert die Beantwortung der Frage, wie lange es dauerte, bis man die bisher meissnischen Gebiete als ?Sachsen“ bezeichnete und sich die dort lebenden Menschen (auch) als ?Sachsen“ verstanden.
