This book traces the historical trajectory of the Communist Party of Cyprus (CPC) from its first public appearance through the newspaper Pyrsos in November 1923 to its informal dissolution at the 5th Congress in November 1944. Drawing on extensive primary sources - many previously inaccessible or unknown - the authors illuminate critical issues that shaped Cyprus's political landscape for over two decades.

By examining the party's political and organizational evolution across different periods, the book reveals the intricate relationship between cause and effect in Cypriot communist history. It brings to light previously underexplored events, including the party's internal conflicts, its communications with the Comintern, the preparatory groundwork for AKEL's formation, and the complex dynamics between the CPC and other political forces.

The earliest collections of Egyptian artifacts were those pieces taken by the Roman empire. There are more Egyptian obelisks in Rome today than there are left in Egypt. In the nineteenth century, British collections were built by the same people whose work comprises volume two. They began as private collections, meant as status symbols usually for the wealthy, or for those who wished to show evidence of their wide travels. However, gradually, many of these collections were left in wills to municipal institutions or turned into publicly available collections themselves.

The British Museum, originally founded in 1759, opened its first purpose built gallery for Egyptian antiquities in 1808. The Townley Gallery was built to house the antiquities seized from the French in 1801, including the Rosetta Stone, and the collection has been growing ever since. Later, the British Museum hired people who were already in Egypt, or who were going to Egypt of their own accord, to gather and send back artifacts. As the discipline of archaeology in Egypt became a scholarly pursuit, museums began to sponsor their own expeditions in order to fill their now bursting stores. Collecting in order to possess the past, both physically and ideologically, of a subjected people was the point.

This book offers a broad introduction to print culture and communication in the Stuart world, exploring the emergence of the anglophone global publishing industry in the early modern period and its interaction with various forms of communication in the Stuart dominions.

The volume begins by providing comprehensive and accessible guidance on how to find and use major online digital resources on early modern print and other forms of communication as well as how to find and analyse material in archives. The second part focuses on the processes of communication and print from composition to dissemination and offers students an introductory overview of these processes at work. The third part consists of case studies showing how the sovereign's relationship with the printing press and other forms of communication shaped key events during the century. The final part introduces how exiled communities and colonies interacted with the printing press both at home and abroad and the place of anglophone communication within these complex linguistic and religious communities.

The Balkans in the Late Middle Ages, 1300-1500 is the first publication of its kind to provide a point of reference for the history of Southeastern Europe during the late medieval period. Scholars have long recognized the 14th and 15th centuries as an extremely important period in the history of the medieval Balkans. This was an era of intense political and military tumult, financial crisis, and social disruption, but also a time of cultural and intellectual innovation and achievement.

While a growing body of literature has focused on developments in the Byzantine Empire and Latin Greece (i.e., the states created by Western/Latin rulers in the Greek Peninsula and some of the Aegean islands), most of the other states in the region, including Serbia, Bulgaria, and Albania, have been largely neglected. What is more, no study has examined the whole peninsula as a geographic unit. The ultimate ambition of this 12-chapter volume is to fill this gap and produce a closely argued, fresh interpretation of events for the entire region, from Dalmatia, Wallachia, and Moldavia in the north to Byzantium and the Latin states in the south.

This book presents the history of Poland through the lens of selected phenomena that demonstrate pan-European and global processes. It tells the story of feudalism, parliamentarism, nationalism and modernization, and explains how these processes emerged, developed or were implemented in Poland.

The comparative method adopted here aims to study the links and transnational entanglements within the region on the basis that the optimal way of writing about a country in East Central Europe is to combine national history with a regional approach. Rather than relegating the themes of gender and diversity (cultural, ethnic, social and religious) to separate chapters, the authors aim to integrate these topics into all texts, informed by their knowledge, sources and empathy. Finally, this volume recounts both facts and the distorted paths taken by the memorialization of historic events. Examining the administration of assets during the trial of the French Templars, as well as the settlement process that took place after the Order's dissolution, this book focuses on material aspects of the proceedings in France that have never been analysed in detail. These include the conflicts that accompanied the seizure of property, the actions of administrators, and the thefts and abuses that occurred at every stage of the process. The actions of Philip the Fair's sons to finalise the takeover of the Templars' property by the Hospitallers are also discussed. This book draws on documents that have not been used in previous research, including the report on the investigation conducted between 1322 and 1325 as part of the agreements concluded by Louis X and Philip V with the Hospitallers. This document is unknown to modern scholars and contains valuable information about the recovery of Templar property and the prosecution of abuses committed during this process.

This book adopts a new approach that departs from the dominant view that considers the Templar affair through the lens of the political aspirations of its most important participants, and this allows new insights into the circumstances and consequences of the Templar trial.

This book examines the Russian Federation's military interventions in the post-Cold War era.

The work connects key events - the Chechen and Georgian Wars, the annexation of Crimea, the Syrian intervention, and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine - in a coherent narrative, showing how these conflicts grew out of Russia's authoritarian turn, aggressive nationalism, imperial ambitions, and willingness to challenge the Western-led international order. The book not only describes Russia's post-Cold War military operations but also analyzes them to understand how Russia makes war. As such, the book consists of two distinctive but interlinked parts. The first part comprises case studies of the major armed conflicts Russia has been involved in since 1994. The second offers "macro-scale" analyses of various aspects of Russian policies and practices concerning the use of force during the post-Cold War period, including the evolution of Russian military strategies and tactics, their impact on the international legal order, and Russian attitudes toward humanitarian principles and human rights norms during armed conflicts. By focusing not only on battlefield outcomes but also on legality, human suffering, state propaganda, and changes in international norms, this volume offers a diverse and comprehensive view of Russian military practices in the post-Cold War period.
