This book tells the story of 15,000 wool workers who went on strike for more than a year, defying police violence and hunger. The strikers were mainly immigrants and half were women. The Passaic textile strike, the first time that the Communist Party led a mass workers' struggle in the United States, captured the nation's imagination and came to symbolize the struggle of workers throughout the country when the labor movement as a whole was in decline during the conservative, pro-business 1920s. Although the strike was defeated, many of the methods and tactics of the Passaic strike presaged the struggles for industrial unions a decade later in the Great Depression.

This book analyzes how the Second International reacted to international diplomatic crises and what was the attitude of French, German and Italian socialists between 1889 and 1915, the year in which Italy entered the World War. This book shows that the Second International became over the years more and more involved in the fight against war and learnt to respond to situations of diplomatic crisis. An example of this is the fact that its last congress before the outbreak of the First World War, the Basel Congress of 1912, was nothing less than a great international socialist demonstration of opposition to war. However, the fact that France, Germany or Italy were involved in a diplomatic crisis hindered the International's ability to respond effectively to it. For all these factors, the attitude of the International is very different from one crisis to another.

A long-overlooked group of workers and their battle for rights and dignity

Like thousands of African American women, Charlotte Adelmond and Dollie Robinson worked in New York's power laundry industry in the 1930s. Jenny Carson tells the story of how substandard working conditions, racial and gender discrimination, and poor pay drove them to help unionize the city's laundry workers. Laundry work opened a door for African American women to enter industry, and their numbers allowed women like Adelmond and Robinson to join the vanguard of a successful unionization effort. But an affiliation with the powerful Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) transformed the union from a radical, community-based institution into a bureaucratic organization led by men. It also launched a difficult battle to secure economic and social justice for the mostly women and people of color in the plants. As Carson shows, this local struggle highlighted how race and gender shaped worker conditions, labor organizing, and union politics across the country in the twentieth century.

Nach 1933 wurde das DINTA in die Deutsche Arbeitsfront integriert und praegte als ≫Amt fuer Berufserziehung und Betriebsfuehrung≪ das Erwerbsleben im NS-Staat entscheidend mit. Die Gestaltung der Arbeitswelt gehoerte in der NS-Diktatur zu den massgeblichen Feldern, auf denen die ≫Volksgemeinschaft≪ verwirklicht werden sollte; in der ≫Betriebsgemeinschaft≪ wurde sie wie in einem Mikrokosmos erfahrbar. Doch das ≫Wohlbefinden≪, das der Betrieb unter Nutzung der neuesten Erkenntnisse der Arbeitswissenschaften sicherzustellen versprach, musste mit einer angepassten Lebensweise und dauerhafter Leistungsbereitschaft vergolten werden. Frank Becker erschliesst in diesem Buch auf breiter Quellenbasis voellig neue Aspekte der nationalsozialistischen Gestaltung der Arbeitswelt und legt deren Wurzeln in der Weimarer Republik frei.

Enlisting memory in a new fight for freedom From the Gilded Age through the Progressive era, labor movements reinterpreted Abraham Lincoln as a liberator of working people while workers equated activism with their own service fighting for freedom during the war. Matthew E. Stanley explores the wide-ranging meanings and diverse imagery used by Civil War veterans within the sprawling radical politics of the time. As he shows, a rich world of rituals, songs, speeches, and newspapers emerged among the many strains of working class cultural politics within the labor movement. Yet tensions arose even among allies. Some people rooted Civil War commemoration in nationalism and reform, and in time, these conservative currents marginalized radical workers who tied their remembering to revolution, internationalism, and socialism. Vor allem Tuerkeistaemmige blieben nach dem Anwerbestopp haeufiger in Deutschland als die Arbeitskraefte aus anderen Laendern. Wie keine andere Stadt steht Berlin bis heute fuer die Einwanderung aus der Tuerkei. Stefan Zeppenfeld untersucht den Wandel der tuerkischen Arbeitswelten von ihren Anfaengen in den 1960er Jahren bis zur Wiedervereinigung. Ausgehend von der ≫Gastarbeit≪ im industriellen Grossbetrieb spuert er in seiner Studie am Beispiel West-Berlins dem Uebergang in andere Branchen nach. Er zeigt, wie der oeffentliche Dienst auch fuer Migrantinnen und Migranten attraktive Aufstiegsmoeglichkeiten eroeffnete, zeichnet den schwierigen Weg in die gewerbliche Selbststaendigkeit nach und legt illegale Beschaeftigungsformen als alternative Verdienstmoeglichkeit offen. Die Wiederentdeckung des Marxismus durch die Neue Linke: eine spannungsvolle Geschichte. Schon vor 1968, in den 1950er Jahren, entstand eine Neue Linke. Junge akademische Intellektuelle begannen jenseits der polarisierten traditionellen Arbeiterbewegung nach neuen Anknuepfungspunkten fuer ein linkes Denken zu suchen. Neu gegruendete Theoriezeitschriften wurden dabei zu ihren Organisationskernen. In der Theorie fand die Neue Linke gemeinsame Ueberzeugungen und verschmolz auch hierdurch zu einer vorgestellten Gemeinschaft. Insbesondere marxistische Theorien wurden wiederentdeckt und neu interpretiert. Mit Marx fuehrte die Neue Linke gemeinsame Kaempfe gegen eine ≫buergerliche≪ Oeffentlichkeit - mit Marx trug sie aber auch immer staerker Kaempfe untereinander aus. David Bebnowski nutzt die beiden West-Berliner Zeitschriften ≫Das Argument≪ und ≫PROKLA≪ als Seismographen und Sonden zur Ergruendung der Geschichte der Neuen Linken und des akademischen Marxismus. Dabei wird deutlich, dass ≫1968≪ nicht nur fuer Aufbrueche steht, sondern ebenso zu Spaltungen fuehrte, die die Linke bis heute kennzeichnen.

Die nationalsozialistische Besatzung Luxemburgs (1940-1944) beeinflusste alle Lebensbereiche der Bevoelkerung. Fuer den Koblenzer Gauleiter Gustav Simon war das kleine Land ein Experimentierfeld ≪neuer Staatlichkeit≫ und im Zuge der Neuordnung nutzte er geschickt die Spielraeume der Arbeits-, Lohn- und Freizeitpolitik. Damit wollten der Gauleiter und andere Parteifunktionaere in erster Linie die Arbeiter und Angestellten der luxemburgischen Schwerindustrie vom NS-Regime ueberzeugen und fuer den ≪totalen Krieg≫ mobilisieren. Der Autor zeichnet die Geschichte der Deutschen Arbeitsfront und ihrer Funktionaere nach. Die Organisation verzeichnete wegen ihres gesellschafts- und wirtschaftspolitischen Dynamismus gewisse Anfangserfolge. Sie war aber letztlich ein Kontroll- und Ueberwachungsinstrument, das die Menschen auf der Arbeit und im Privatleben im nationalsozialistischen Sinne erziehen und beeinflussen wollte. Der Autor untersucht anhand zahlreicher biographischer Beispiele deutscher und luxemburgischer Akteure, wie unterschiedlich die Menschen in einer Besatzungsgesellschaft auf Druck, Verlockungen und Unrechtsmassnahmen reagierten.

This book examines the most significant factors accounting for the decline of union density during the neoliberal period, focusing on the case of Mexico. Union density, which reflects the representation of labor unions in the employed labor force, is one of the main indicators of union strength. The relation of organized labor with the state and the political system are also considered. The analysis is framed within a structure concentrated on cyclical, structural and political-institutional factors linked to labor union performance. Over the last decades, the transformations brought about by neoliberalism and democratization reshaped many features of the domestic political and economic model in Mexico. Therefore, an examination of these developments regarding the repercussions of the factors linked to union density decline is crucial.
