This open access short reader provides an introductory yet critically analytical exploration of migration and the politics of integration. Drawing inspiration from Nira Yuval-Davis' concept of the 'politics of belonging,' we define the 'politics of integration' as various political projects aimed at constructing integration, belonging, and cohesion within different collectivities. The book explores theoretical debates, such as the cultural, civic, and local turns, governmentality, subsidiarity, nationalism, nativism, securitization of migration, ultra-politics, sub-politics, populism, nativism, multiculturalism, and interculturalism. Based on the authors' empirical research findings, the book analyzes the directions the politics of integration have taken in Europe during the neoliberal era. This era is characterized by a bipolar, Manichean view of the world, which exacerbates the divide between "us" and "them". Written in an assessable way, the book offers valuable insights for social science students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as for policymakers and practitioners grappling with the challenges posed by migration and its political dimensions.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has experienced more frequent droughts, heat waves, and other extreme weather events than the rest of the world. Flooding has forced human migration and displacement in Egypt, Iran, and Tunisia in 2020, while wildfires have spread in Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey. The author, a specialist in the MENA region, unpacks the implications of several developments that have triggered large-scale migration from rural to urban areas in the Middle East, and North Africa, and threaten to destabilize the region. These include, among other things, widespread famine, population displacement, and the growing decline of agricultural productivity.

Digging deep into key terminology and frameworks such as the 1951 Refugee Convention, climate-human rights nexus, climate-related protest, environmental politics, green investment, and climate governance, the author demonstrates how human rights and climate change are inextricably intertwined and provides additional context to support student learning. Dr. Jaira J. Harrington is an Assistant Professor of Black Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago, USA. She has published in Latin American and Caribbean Ethnic Studies, Kalfou: A Journal of Comparative Ethnic Studies, Race & Class, and Revista Relicario Uberlandia. A seasoned educator on gender, race, labor, activism, and Black communities in Latin America, she teaches courses on Black diaspora, global Black feminisms, and the politics of Blackness in Latin America. She is currently completing her first book, Inscribed and Erased: Domestic Workers' Rights in Brazil.

Dr. Angie Edell Campos Lazo is a Lecturer of Social Work at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Peru and an Afro-Peruvian activist. Her dissertation, Black Bodies in Professional Workspaces: Professionalization of Afro-Peruvian Women in the City of Lima, examines contemporary racism through the educational and professional experiences of Afro-Peruvian women. Her research centers Afro-Peruvian human rights, Afro-descendant women's activism, and youth political participation. A recognized scholar-activist and community leader, she has published widely in the Afro-Latin American studies field.

Jacobs presents themes of belonging, identity, healing, pain, joy, disconnection, reconnection, and the practice of (re)membering in the ecocosmological sphere. As an art form, she relies on scholars from disciplines beyond the scope of theology to address theological concerns and conscious positioning. This book is a call to unlearn, disconnect, deconstruct, and then (re)member, reconnect, and construct in life-giving, life-affirming, and life-altering ways.

Guided by early foundational and recent compelling theories on race/ethnicity and identity development across the lifespan, Celina Chatman Nelson, Stephen C. Peck, Oksana Malanchuk, and Jacquelynne S. Eccles provide a detailed analysis of their collected research on the Maryland Adolescent Development in Context Study (MADICS) to demonstrate the diversity of racial/ethnic identity profiles and how they change over time. MADICS began with nearly 1500 7th graders and their families in the early 1990s, following many of them into their early 30s at the turn of the millennium. Using mixed-method research involving case studies and interview data, this book demonstrates racial/ethnic identity as multidimensional, contextualized, and idiosyncratic, within a bidirectional, iterative, and nuanced process. Dominican Political Rising in NYC traces how a relatively recent immigrant community became a consequential force in the city's governing coalitions. Centering New York's post-1965 migration, the book situates Dominican mobilization within shifting urban pluralism, party machines, and inter- and intra-ethnic competition across Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn. This study argues that Black calls for force in the struggle against white supremacy have echoed concepts and principles in the Western just war tradition.

After establishing that just war theory has ignored Black calls for force and that the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade relied on just war ethics for its justification, this book turns to African American resistance rhetoric in three crucial periods of U.S. history. In the antebellum period, the Civil Rights movement, and the era of mass incarceration, African American thinkers have drawn on ideas and forms of logic that run parallel to just war ethics. This makes Black rhetoric of forceful resistance morally normal, rather than radical or extremist. Figures in the Black just war tradition such as David Walker, Henry Highland Garnet, Harriet Tubman, Huey Newton, Bree Newsome, and others should be included in the discipline of just war ethics, and white American Christians should recognize that their endorsements of force are consistent with widely accepted moral positions.

This book analyses media and political discourses surrounding the acceptance of refugees in contemporary Japan.

Drawing on critical discourse analysis, which sees the use of language as a form of social practice, this book traces changing discourses on refugees in Japan and explores ideologies embedded in them. By adopting the analytical concepts of national identity, state identity, ontological security, governmental belonging, kokusaika (internationalisation) and tabunka kyosei (multicultural coexistence), it explores the rationale that underpins these discourses over a nearly half-century period - from 1975, when the first Vietnamese refugees arrived on Japanese shores, to 2023, when a controversial bill to amend Japan's Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act was approved by the National Diet. Given the increasing number of refugees worldwide, this timely discussion will provide valuable insights into research on refugees not only in Japan but also within an international, comparative framework.

The open casket is a central motif, a political and ethical focal point, for thinking about Mamie Till-Mobley's pain and suffering and her profound act of truth-telling as she wanted the world to bear witness to the gratuitous, despicable, and atrocious dimensions of anti-Blackness. The critical and powerful essays within this book capture both the horror of Emmett Till's murder/lynching and the powerful agency and the indomitable Black maternal love and courage that Mamie Till-Mobley demonstrated. Through the open casket, Mamie Till-Mobley reclaimed her son's body, and re-signified his dignity and familial-relational meaning to white America, Black America, and the world. It was her agency-in spite of the horror of his disfigured body and the unbearable affective weight that she experienced by such a site/sight-that forced white America to witness the terror of anti-Blackness, to tarry with its own egregious systemic racism.

In this profound response to that question, Zahi Zalloua endeavours to think through the shared Black and Palestinian experience of being racialized as a problem. Zalloua argues that today's anti-Blackness is not a lingering feature of a regrettable past that only occasionally manifests its ugly face. Rather, anti-Blackness permeates white civil society. Black being stands for the anti-human, its being is barred and degraded. And while Black being denotes criminality, Palestinian being denotes terrorism - a problematic being produced by Orientalism and used to legitimize oppression. Both the Black and Palestinian are framed as existential threats that undermine the very structures of white and Zionist dominance.

To Exist as a Problem provides a searing critique of such assumptions, arguing that Blacks and Palestinians do exist as a problem, but a different problem than the one dictated by the petrifying white and settler gaze. They exist as a threat because the mechanisms of structural racism make them so. In order for racism to thrive, they must be othered in the profoundest sense. In asking how a politics can be constructed in the face of this hegemony, Zalloua constructs a model of solidarity that places Black lives and Palestinian liberation at the forefront of the anti-racist struggle.
