Migrant Lives in Crisis in Indonesia: COVID-19, Governance, and Social Resilience. (International Perspectives on Migration) 111 pp. 2026:3 (Springer, GW) <762-802>
ISBN 978-981-9545-53-7 hard ¥26,286.- (税込) EUR 99.99
This comprehensive volume offers a critical, socio-demographic examination of the COVID-19 crisis and human mobility in Indonesia. Drawing on data from across the archipelago, it covers the demographic, economic, psychosocial, and socio-political contexts of the pandemic, rigorously analyzing emergency management and its severe, specific impacts on migrants (domestic and international workers, students) and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). The book meticulously analyzes the consequences of enforced restrictions and border closures, detailing the disruption of livelihoods and the adaptive strategies employed by these vulnerable populations. As the first book to frame the pandemic through this lens in Indonesia, it provides a crucial platform for rethinking crisis response commitment and underscores the importance of domestic implementation of international laws for protecting migrant rights. Beyond informing post-pandemic policy and research on migration in Indonesia, this work provides enduring, actionable lessons relevant to public health crises and state-of-emergency management throughout the Global South.

Jimenez-Munoz, Gladys M.,
Womanhood and Race in Interwar Puerto Rico: Labile Bodies, Colonial Disparities. 268 pp. 2026:2 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <762-848>
ISBN 978-3-031-87297-6 hard ¥31,544.- (税込) EUR 119.99
This book examines 'womanhood' and 'race' not only as disputed, converging, and constantly changing categories and lived experiences, but also as interrelated and unequal subjectivities and social realties that shaped all early-twentieth century Puerto Ricans. It empirically documents just how significantly 'womanhood' and 'race' were inextricably intertwined in Puerto Rico between 1914 and 1945, a decisive period in U.S. expansionism and in the transformation of this island. Through a comparative analysis and description of specific subjects in early-twentieth century Puerto Rico-mostly Puerto Ricans from different races and social classes, but also some North Americans as well-the book demonstrates the extent to which 'womanhood' and 'race' are a more thorny, volatile, and unstable than is commonly acknowledged within Women's History and Caribbean Studies. This is the first book that examines the relationships between women in Puerto Rico from divergent social classes and racialized positions by mostly focusing on the socioeconomic and racial inequalities among colonized women in Puerto Rico. This is in marked contrast with most Women's History globally which mainly concentrates either on the lives of elite women or, at best, on the unequal relationships between colonizer- and/or European-descended women vis-a-vis colonized- and/or non-white women. In this book 'womanhood' and 'race' are not seen as separate, nor as already given, historically and culturally immutable 'things.' Those are some of the lacunae this book transcends, primarily in the case of white-Creole women relative to non-white Island women and the images socially constructed of them in Puerto Rico, as well as for racially located Puerto Ricans more broadly. Within this context, the book enables a different reading of already known documents while demonstrating the importance of examining unused or forgotten bibliographical sources, some of them previously untranslated.

Zimmerman, Arely M.,
Contentious Citizenship: Salvadoran Activism and Belonging Across Borders. 160 pp. 2026:3 (U. Arizona Pr., US) <762-853>
ISBN 978-0-8165-5462-1 hard ¥22,440.- (税込) US$ 100.00
ISBN 978-0-8165-5461-4 paper ¥6,732.- (税込) US$ 30.00
Contentious Citizenship reshapes how we understand belonging, identity, and political participation in the context of migration. Drawing on decades of Salvadoran activism from the 1980s solidarity movement to the post-civil war era, Arely M. Zimmerman offers a powerful ethnographic account of how migrants challenge exclusionary state practices and redefine citizenship on their own terms using transnational networks and revolutionary politics that transcend borders. Drawing on nearly fifty interviews with activists who fled El Salvador, Zimmerman traces how political refugees carried with them strategies of resistance and community organizing that shaped social justice movements in the United States. The book addresses the political turmoil and grassroots mobilizations in El Salvador, the sanctuary movement of the 1980s, contemporary activism, and the impact of women's strategies and forms of resistance. Essential reading for scholars and students of migration, Central American studies, and political movements, Contentious Citizenship is a bold intervention into contemporary debates on identity, legality, and resistance. Zimmerman's work honors the ingenuity and resilience of Salvadoran activists and invites readers to consider what it means to belong.

Migrations in Irish Society and Literature: New Worlds, New Words. 268 pp. 2026:2 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <762-961>
ISBN 978-3-032-10413-7 hard ¥36,802.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book addresses the issue of migration to and from Ireland since the 17th-18th century and examines the dynamics of emigration and immigration down to the present day. It is distinctive in its pluri-disciplinary approach of migrating issues in Ireland as well as the way it confronts individual and collective dynamics in the context of migration. It offers a comprehensive and englobing understanding of key issues of migration in Ireland today and their legal, social and linguistic impacts, while also focusing on the representations of the migrating experience in literature, be it in poetry or in fiction. In doing so it also aims at reassessing issues of home, place-making and belonging. The book goes beyond the study of immigration and emigration (from a historical or economic approach) but rather demonstrates the complexity of migrating trajectories, whether individual or collective, and how those migrating stories are inscribed within national and supra-national dynamics. The study of the words used to narrate those experiences offers insight into the plurality of migrating experiences, hence the place devoted in this book to literary representations.

ヨーロッパ人は移民について何を考えるのか、そしてなぜそれが重要なのか
Dennison, James / Geddes, Andrew,
What Europeans Think About Immigration and Why It Matters. 224 pp. 2026:6 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <762-684>
ISBN 978-0-19-288994-2 hard ¥9,141.- (税込) GB£ 30.00
Immigration is one of the most polarising and political consequential issues in 21st-century Europe. What Europeans Think About Immigration and Why It Matters offers a powerful and comprehensive analysis of the matter, mapping not only what Europeans think about immigration, but why they think it, how those attitudes are formed, and what they mean for the political future of Europe. Drawing on vast quantities of high-quality survey data spanning decades, countries, and crises, and combining insights from political science, psychology, sociology, and public policy, James Dennison and Andrew Geddes provide a new, interdisciplinary framework for understanding immigration attitudes. They explain how early-life socialization, emotional predispositions, values, media, economic conditions, and national contexts interact to shape how Europeans perceive immigration. With attitudes shown to be more stable, multidimensional, and resistant to change than many politicians, journalists, and policymakers assume, the book debunks common myths and reveals the complex interplay between beliefs, feelings, and facts that drive public opinion. Beyond identifying what people think, the book offers a theoretical and empirical framework for understanding salience-why immigration becomes politically important at some times but not others. It explains how and why immigration rises up the public agenda, why it resonates with some voters more than others, and what this means for party competition, policymaking, and the communication strategies used by politicians, journalists, and activists. Dennison and Geddes explore how salience, not just sentiment, has been key to the rise of radical-right parties and to far-reaching shifts in national and EU-level migration policies. This book is essential reading for scholars, students, policymakers, and anyone seeking to understand the deeper cognitive, emotional, and structural forces that shape how we see and govern migration.

Gorup, Michael,
The Counterrevolutionary Shadow: Race, Democracy, and the Making of the American People. (American Political Thought) 320 pp. 2025:10 (U. Pr. Kansas, US) <762-695>
ISBN 978-0-7006-3973-1 hard ¥22,436.- (税込) US$ 99.99
ISBN 978-0-7006-3974-8 paper ¥7,850.- (税込) US$ 34.99
A bold explanation of how reactionary political movements appeal to racism to reconcile American democracy with antidemocratic practices."All power to the people!" So goes the familiar slogan of 1960s racial justice politics. The message is clear: the fight against racism is a fight for greater democracy-for the rule of "the people." And yet, across American history, movements of racial backlash have also framed themselves as aiming to deliver greater democracy and redeem the rule of "the people." Examples abound, ranging from the Southern Redeemers who overthrew Reconstruction, to the "populist" backlash to the civil rights movement, and the white revanchism of our own time. How is it that we find claims to greater democracy on both sides of these struggles? What does this reveal about modern democracy, popular sovereignty, and the peculiar politics of race in America? The Counterrevolutionary Shadow: Race, Democracy, and the Making of the American People provides a novel account of the relationship between race and democratic politics in the United States. Across five chapters, Michael Gorup turns to the life and work of key figures in the history of American political thought-including Thomas Jefferson, Hosea Easton, David Walker, Ida B. Wells, W.?E.?B. Du Bois, and Huey?P. Newton-to argue that racial politics in the United States has always been a politics of peoplehood. Racism is what Gorup calls a politics of "popular enclosure": it limits the scope of democratic power by circumscribing who is said to belong to "the people." In so doing, it contains democratization from within. Neither strictly antidemocratic, nor a necessary entailment of modern democracy as such, Gorup argues that racism is best understood as a political construct developed to manage, if never fully reconcile, the contradictions that beset settler democracy.Racism is, in short, American democracy's "counterrevolutionary shadow"-a technology for rendering despotic practices like enslavement, exploitation, and dispossession tolerable within a society where the people are said to rule.

Transnational Labour Migration and Musical Performance: Filipino Musicians in Australia. (Migration, Diasporas and Citizenship) 278 pp. 2026:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <762-204>
ISBN 978-981-9544-56-1 hard ¥34,173.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book focuses on the liminality and experiences of Filipino migrant musicians in Australia in relation to their identities and positionalities as migrants, professionals, labour force, musicians, and members of the multicultural community. Over 40 interviews with Filipino musicians living in Australia connect phenomena and issues surrounding transnational labour migration and the performance of musicians from other migrant backgrounds. Scholars and students interested in cultural sociology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, cultural studies, migration, diaspora studies and Southeast Asian studies gain insights from the compelling stories in both scope and nuance, which are applicable in a broader multicultural context and the transnational as well as local music industry. Deploying important concepts such as liminality and marginality, the book is interdisciplinary and offers fresh empirical, theoretical and methodological takes on transnational migration and migrant representation in the music industry. More importantly, it highlights the involvement of an underrepresented group in a vulnerable and undervalued profession, to increase participation of migrants in the Australian and global music industry.

ISBN 978-1-80592-632-0 hard ¥37,026.- (税込) US$ 165.00
This volume (Parts A and B) contains 16 new studies that shed light on key aspects of immigration: the drivers of immigration, the factors fostering or hindering immigrant integration in the host country, and the impact of immigration in the host countries. The studies span a wide range of countries in Europe, North and South America and use novel administrative, regional and survey data to offer insights into historical and contemporary episodes of migration. Together, they enrich our understanding of the determinants and consequences of migration and provide an evidence base for policy discussions. The volume covers three broad themes. In both Part A and B are eight papers on the integration of immigrants in the host society, focusing on the acquisition of human capital, labor supply, family formation, and returns to skills. Part B also studies the impact of immigration on outcomes that often dominate the public debate, namely employment, education, and crime. Published twice per year in conjunction with the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) Research in Labor Economics contains new cutting edge peer reviewed research applying economic theory and econometrics to policy related topics pertinent to worker well-being often with an international focus.

The Economics of Migration of Highly Skilled Workers from Tuerkiye: The New Age of Colonialism. 179 pp. 2026:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <762-201>
ISBN 978-3-032-10605-6 hard ¥28,915.- (税込) EUR 109.99
This book examines the migration of highly skilled labour from developing countries to developed ones and assesses the economics costs associated with this. By highlighting the impact of migration on developing countries, it outlines the development challenges created by the loss of highly skilled workers, especially the loss of specialised knowledge. With a particular focus on the movement of labour from Tuerkiye to the rest of the world, the inability of Tuerkiye to grow its own IT and engineering industries is discussed, alongside attempts to retain highly skilled labour. This book offers a new perspective on global migration and the hidden economic costs associated with it. It will be relevant to students, researchers, and policymakers interested in labour and development economics.

Why has the racial wealth gap between the median white households and median Black households in America remained stagnant over the past century, never narrowing below six to one? Mehrsa Baradaran attempts to answer this question in this sweeping yet accessible history. She shows how decades of the laws rooted in white supremacy-from slavery and the broken Reconstruction-era promise of "40 acres and a mule", to the racist policies of the Jim Crow and New Deal eras-have restricted Black access to capital, credit, homeownership and other mechanisms of wealth creation while subsidising the rising economic fortunes of white families. An infuriating and compelling read, The Racial Wealth Gap offers a devastating analysis of one of America's most pressing systemic issues. A Norton Short

This textbook establishes Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a central framework for social work education and praxis. Addressing and ultimately moving beyond models of cultural competence and diversity, it offers a comprehensive framework for integrating CRT into pedagogy, research, and practice. It introduces analytical tools to address issues such as systemic racism, the social construction of race, critiques of liberalism, interest convergence, intersectionality, and counternarratives. Chapters contributed by renowned social work researchers highlight how social work has been entangled with white supremacy, neoliberalism, and colonialism, while also presenting a road map for a change in the future. With case examples, narratives, and reflective questions, this book is designed for all levels of social work study, as well as for committed practitioners of anti-racism. Although grounded in the US context, global perspectives are included, making it relevant for international audiences facing systematic racism or colonial legacies.

Migration, Innovation and Knowledge Transmission: An Interdisciplinary Assessment of Italian Migration and its Socioeconomic Impact. (Palgrave Studies in Economic History) 293 pp. 2026:2 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <762-184>
ISBN 978-3-031-98110-4 hard ¥52,576.- (税込) EUR 199.99
This edited collection presents an interdisciplinary assessment of the impact of migration on knowledge transmission and entrepreneurial innovation. Focusing on Italian migration to Europe and the Americas, the book analyses the socioeconomic transformations enabled by migration and fills an important gap in the literature on the economic history of migration. Featuring contributions from fifteen scholars from around the world, the book presents a range of case studies and archival research that shows how the transmission of knowledge and skills, passed on by migrants in destination countries, represents a less-known but crucial aspect of the migration phenomenon. Chapters discuss the impact of Italian migrants in a range of contexts, with their entrepreneurial, professional, manual and craft skills significantly contributing to economic, cultural and industrial development in countries such as Chile, Argentina, Brazil and the US. Chapters bring out larger themes such as technological innovation, educational practices, institutional and public policies and experiences of short-term or temporary migration. The interdisciplinary framework of the book, bringing together economic historians, architects and sociologists, fosters unique perspectives and enriches our understanding of the economic impact of migration beyond simply linear economic growth. This will be a valuable resource for researchers of economic and business history, as well historians of migration, sociologists and demographers.

Muslims in Milwaukee: Placemaking, Belonging, and Activism. (Critical Arab American Studies) 310 pp. 2026:6 (Syracuse U. Pr., US) <762-115>
ISBN 978-0-8156-1216-2 paper ¥8,963.- (税込) US$ 39.95
Muslims in Milwaukee explores the everyday lives, identities, and activism of Muslims in a midsized Midwestern city. Milwaukee is one of America's most segregated cities, yet within its boundaries, a vibrant Muslim community is reshaping narratives and embodied practices of belonging, civic engagement, and urban placemaking. While considerable scholarship on Muslim Americans has concentrated on larger metropolitan centers like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, or on Detroit's historic Arab neighborhoods, this book turns our attention to an understudied city where Muslim communities are small but rapidly growing, and where their experiences unfold within distinct local landscapes of race, segregation, and opportunity. Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork, surveys, and extensive interviews with community members, students, artists, activists, and leaders, the authors examine how local political, economic, and historical structures shape Muslim American experiences and civic participation, situating their analysis within the dual dynamics of belonging on one hand and exclusion and discrimination on the other.

Black Evidence: A History and a Warning. 320 pp. 2026:3 (Norton, US) <762-1045>
ISBN 978-1-324-03627-2 hard ¥7,177.- (税込) US$ 31.99
From Reconstruction to Redemption, from the enactment of landmark civil rights legislation to the execution of the Southern strategy, from 2020's multiracial protests to the swift elimination of policies etching out a more inclusive society, Americans regularly experience periods of racial reckoning followed by walloping retrenchment. In Black Evidence, political scientist Candis Watts Smith shows that this pattern is the result of an American habit: denying the truths about our society that Black people experience and remember. Smith then delivers a warning: the effects of this habit ripple out, dulling our ability to identify the signs of authoritarianism and heightening our tolerance for cruelty. Still, she shows how these same truths offer models to overcome our repeated predicament. Through a curation of critical moments across four centuries, Smith invites us to review the evidence that has been obscured, distorted, and denied. She rigorously investigates the practices that turn Black witnesses into liars in the court room, Black patients into superbodies that don't feel pain in health care settings, Black people into subhumans in scientific experiments, and Black children into superpredators. She reveals what happens when Black voices are subject to exclusion-their communities are terrorized, their memories are refuted, and their resistance is pathologized. Written with compassion and tempered optimism, Black Evidence prescribes a cure and encourages readers to practice the skills needed to build a truly multiracial democracy: confront our past, acknowledge the damage of inequality in our present, and listen to the voices of those who experience the problems we wish to solve for an equitable future.

Border Afterlives begins with the undocumented individuals who die crossing the U.S.-Mexico border-deaths that are both preventable and politically produced. Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic, participatory, and community-engaged research, author Gabriella Soto examines the postmortem journeys of these migrants through the fragmented infrastructure of medicolegal death investigation in the U.S. Southwest. She reveals how the state's deterrence-based border policies not only generate death but also fail to provide adequate care for the dead. Soto argues that these deaths should be understood as structural homicides and that the forensic neglect they face is a form of ongoing violence. Moving between the practical and the philosophical, Soto asks what it means to care for the dead and what society owes to those who die in its name. Through the lens of haunting, she explores how the dead continue to shape the living, not as objects of horror but as moral agents whose presence demands justice. Border Afterlives offers a border-scale comparative account of forensic practices, critiques the limits of "best practices" in under-resourced systems, and calls for a reimagining of forensic humanitarianism grounded in reciprocity and dignity, beyond human rights. This is a book that insists on remembering the dead.

Chineses in the Diaspora: Multilingual Practices and Chinese Identity in Los Angeles. (Encounters) 206 pp. 2026:4 (Multilingual Matters, UK) <762-1049>
ISBN 978-1-80041-168-5 hard ¥30,454.- (税込) GB£ 99.95
Challenges simplified discourses that describe Chinese as the next global language. This book analyzes the multilingual and multidialectal practices of Chinese Americans in Los Angeles, a city with a Chinese diasporic population of around 500,000. It describes the contact between different Chineses in a diasporic setting, illustrating how non-Putonghua features are made use of to form distinct identities and speech communities. It demonstrates that localized conceptions of 'Chineseness' hold greater sociolinguistic significance than the transnational narratives of a unified global Chinese. The author argues that a homogeneous global Chinese is unlikely to arise as, analogous to 'World Englishes', different degrees of divergence are found in Chineses around the world. This book will appeal to scholars interested in Chinese language variation, translanguaging practices, language ideology and identity.

Discusses the many ways that racism and hierarchies of language hinder honesty and harm society. In this bold attempt to challenge readers' assumptions about racial prejudice, JPB Gerald explores how racism and hierarchies of language hinder effective education and harm societies around the world. Through a wide range of interviews with experts in areas ranging from US states generally perceived as being progressive to countries including Finland, Algeria and Japan, the author explores how a centuries-long battle for control of the narrative around race and language continues to be fought across the globe. The chapters address how racism and harmful linguistic ideologies are perceived, and how these perceptions are influenced and exacerbated by popular culture, which often obscures the reality of intersecting axes of oppression. The book concludes by drawing together the common threads and exploring how readers can challenge and change the narrative.

Inside Refugee Support Work: An Ethnography of Language, Labour and Subjectivity. (Language, Mobility and Institutions) 300 pp. 2026:4 (Multilingual Matters, UK) <762-1024>
ISBN 978-1-80041-283-5 hard ¥42,642.- (税込) GB£ 139.95
Presents a situated, ethnographically grounded, sociolinguistic critique of politics of difference and inequality in contemporary Central Europe. This book explores the construction of 'languaged' and professional subjectivities in the context of refugee support work in Austria. It presents ethnographic insights into how language and linguistic practice come to matter both as part of a migration infrastructure in transformation, and in the efforts within a particular institution to reinvent itself as it struggles for survival in the context of shrinking public and state support for refugee provision. The author focuses on how transformation processes play out in counsellors' and volunteer interpreters' conceptions of themselves as professionals and speaking subjects when confronted with the political and ethical dilemmas of an increasingly precarised work context. It becomes clear that language, while being central to the services offered, remains a sign of Otherness in a 'languaged' instutional order.

The Nazi Genocide of the Sinti and Roma Peoples: A Transnational History. 352 pp. 2026:6 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <762-1028>
ISBN 978-0-19-898071-1 hard ¥31,688.- (税込) GB£ 104.00
How can we write a comprehensive, transnational history of the Porrajmos--one that captures the cumulative nature of anti-Gypsy persecution across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland from 1870 to 1945? The Nazi Genocide of the Sinti and Roma Peoples: A Transnational History traces the evolution of policies targeting the so-called 'Gypsies,' moving beyond national boundaries to reveal a shared regional logic of exclusion and biopolitical control. While Holocaust historiography has long focused on the genocide of European Jews, the Porrajmos--the genocide of the Sinti and Roma--has only recently been recognized as a distinct history of systematic suffering and destruction. However, no existing work fully addresses the transnational continuities and ruptures that shaped this persecution. Drawing on extensive German, Austrian, and Swiss archival research, and framed by Michel Foucault's concepts of biopolitics and thanatopolitics, this book examines the shifting treatment of Sinti and Roma communities. It highlights the transition from liberal assimilationist policies during the Kaiserreich to the radical racial extermination under Nazi rule. The study also uncovers how Nazi Germany extended its genocidal policies beyond its borders, coordinating with Austria and Switzerland--most notably through the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC), a precursor to Interpol. Finally, this book reveals the complexities of Nazi collaboration, showing Austria's complicity in the genocide, while Switzerland adopted policies of sedentarization and exclusion rather than mass murder. The Nazi Genocide of the Sinti and Roma Peoples offers a critical new perspective on the Porrajmos as both a product of national regimes and a transnational project of racialized state violence.

Of Times Ontologically Insecure: Ontological Security Seeking and Types of Bilateral Migration Agreements. (Studien zur Migrations- und Integrationspolitik) 247 pp. 2025:11 (Springer VS, GW) <762-1031>
ISBN 978-3-658-50121-1 paper ¥26,286.- (税込) EUR 99.99
Why are bilateral migration agreements (BMAs) concluded the way they are? "Of Times Ontologically Insecure" combines the newest datasets on both bilateral labor agreements (BLAs) and other types of BMAs to get at the question in how far ontological security seeking behavior explains the conclusion of certain types of BMAs.Research to date has held that BMAs are signed to avoid costly domestic political debates and pass specific migration policies while avoiding institutional grid-lock. However, these accounts rarely take into consideration the variance in types of legal instruments concluded. Positing that the conclusion of BMAs cannot solely be explained by rational interest-based arguments, this study turns to Ontological Security Studies to analyze the cognitive underpinnings of immigration policy-making on the international level. The author analyzes how the interaction between domestic coalitions and the government in the United States led to the conclusion of specific types of BMAs with Cuba, Mexico and Guatemala at specific points in time between 1990 and 2020. Anxieties over a border in crisis and a highly polarized domestic public, have led the US to increasingly become ontologically insecure and thus, conclude informal agreements with externalized measures of border and immigration control.

Advancing Latinas in STEM Academic Careers. 280 pp. 2026:3 (Emerald, UK) <762-1033>
ISBN 978-1-80592-992-5 hard ¥21,766.- (税込) US$ 97.00
ISBN 978-1-80592-994-9 paper ¥11,220.- (税込) US$ 50.00
This book contains an Open Access Chapter. Latinas represent one of the fastest-growing populations in the US, yet Latina faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers remain underrepresented. Advancing Latinas in STEM Academic Careers shares ideas, strategies, and best practices in the following areas: (1) work-life issues, policies/practices, mentoring, and climate that affect the pathways/pipelines, recruitment, retention, and advancement/leadership of Latinas in academic STEM careers; (2) challenges and opportunities for STEM Latinas across faculty rank and within and outside academia; (3) best practices and lessons learned in the recruitment and advancement of STEM Latinas; (4) intersectionality issues, particularly those related to gender and ethnic diversity in STEM; and (5) pipeline/pathways for advancing Latinas in STEM. Academic research in STEM is often conducted without the perspectives of members of underrepresented groups, including Latinas. An increase in the number and representation of underrepresented minorities and women in STEM has the capacity to build more informed public policy formulation, discussion, and implementation. Having an inclusive STEM faculty that advances Latinas exposes students to a range of perspectives and experiences, counters stereotypes students might have about Latinas and BIPOC populations, strengthens the pipeline for Latina/o students, and prepares non-Latina/o students to work productively in an increasingly diverse and competitive workforce. The audience for this book includes researchers in STEM equity and Latina/o studies, college and university administrators, and faculty, especially Hispanic Serving Institutions seeking knowledge, best practices, and resources for advancing Latinas in STEM academic careers.

New Immigrants and Multilingual Linguistic Landscape in Taiwan. (Multilingual Matters) 198 pp. 2025:10 (Multilingual Matters, UK) <762-1035>
ISBN 978-1-80041-956-8 hard ¥30,454.- (税込) GB£ 99.95
This book offers a comprehensive exploration of the multilingual linguistic landscape in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, focusing on the impact of new immigrants and the diverse range of languages they speak, across urban and peripheral areas. It examines the city's transition from a predominantly monolingual or bilingual Chinese-English signage environment to a vibrant multilingual one shaped by Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and Southeast Asian languages. Employing ethnographic methods and geosemiotic analysis, the study investigates code preferences and writing types on public and private signage. Additionally, it delves into community perceptions of the multilingual linguistic landscape and its implications for language policy and planning, providing valuable insights into evolving linguistic dynamics. The authors move beyond theoretical exploration to deliver practical insights with implications for institutions, policymakers, researchers, educators, students and practitioners alike. Ultimately, this work aspires to enrich understanding not only of Taiwan's linguistic landscape but also of broader global discussions on multilingualism, language policy and language planning.

In this work, scholar Gabriela Raquel Rios considers how Latina/o/x communities engage in the ethical reclamation of indigeneity. Through case studies that include testimonios and other Indigenous storytelling practices, RIos reveals how cultural logics of colonization continue to shape-and often constrain-understandings of indigeneity across Latin America and in the United States. Addressing different genres of human and what contemporary indigeneity and reclaiming indigeneity looks like across Latin American contexts, chapters in this work examine digital bruja poetry, Aymara women's Lucha Libre in Bolivia, Raramuri dance in Mexico, and Indigenous Khipu in the Andes. The author weaves her own story of being from southern Texas and traveling to Mexico throughout the book. Bridging Sylvia Wynter's theory of "genres of the human" with critical Latinx indigeneity studies, Chicana/o/x studies, decolonial theory, and rhetorical new materialisms, this book challenges readers to rethink what it means to be human, Indigenous, and Chicanx in the wake of colonial violence. Rather than reinforcing binaries defined by settler colonialism, RIos proposes a framework that centers community knowledge and grounded practices. Her work opens space for dialogue, listening, and healing, emphasizing that reclaiming indigeneity requires attention to the stories, movements, and rhetorical practices that emerge from within communities themselves.

This Handbook brings together the viewpoints of academics, practitioners, artists and people seeking refuge in Scotland to explore the global learnings that can be gained from this context. The book engages with the challenge of supporting integration as multi-directional processes within a broader setting in which forced migration is often criminalised. Situating its analysis of integration in Scotland, the book combines chapters based in theory, which explore issues ranging from the concept of integration to law, borders and integration policy, with creative and practical responses to these issues. The book offers hopeful alternatives to current realities of forced migration, and a compelling challenge to dominant narratives related to refuge and integration. It will be of interest to practitioners, policymakers and scholars working with refugees and asylum seekers around the world. This book is open access under a CC BY ND licence.

Darkology: Blackface and the American Way of Entertainment. 528 pp. 2026:3 (Norton, US) <762-1014>
ISBN 978-1-63149-634-9 hard ¥8,972.- (税込) US$ 39.99
Never before has the disturbing story of blackface and its piercing reflection of American society been so comprehensively told. Darkology meticulously unravels this complex, subterranean and all-too-often expunged history. By 1830, blackface, which caricatured ex-slaves for their supposed subservience and happy demeanour, had become a venomous cultural export. Blackface theatre soon segued into everyday amateur shows during Jim Crow, whose name derives from minstrelsy's founding character. Beloved by presidents including FDR and Gerald Ford, blackface saturated twentieth-century America, permeating US military bases abroad and Second World War Japanese American internment camps as an "Americanisation" tool. Despite a 1950s backlash led by Black mothers protesting public school performances, 1960s college students from California to Vermont aggressively challenged legal bans. With its gripping writing and penetrating archival research, Darkology is a landmark work that peers beneath the historical boulders that deliberately obscure America's racial past.

ISBN 978-3-032-11362-7 hard ¥39,431.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book examines the global dimensions of migration psychology, showing how migration shapes family life, policy frameworks, and processes of inclusion and exclusion. As the second volume of a two-part collection, it expands the focus beyond the United Kingdom to highlight the psychological experiences of migrants across diverse international contexts. Chapters explore themes of intergenerational separation, circular migration, language and identity, and the role of cultural practices in sustaining wellbeing. Grounded in psychology and in conversation with sociology, theology, and the arts, the volume demonstrates how migration is both a deeply personal journey and a systemic, political phenomenon. By foregrounding issues of family, belonging, faith, culture, and community, this book offers a timely, multidisciplinary contribution to migration studies. It will be essential reading for scholars, students, and practitioners interested in psychology, migration, diaspora, and the social dynamics of inclusion.
