Socioecological Transformations: Linking Ontologies with Structures, Personal with Collective Change. (Rethinking Globalizations) 328 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <748-611>
ISBN 978-1-032-71063-1 hard ¥40,991.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
Socioecological Transformations addresses two opposing trends in transformations literature. First, the widespread co-optation of transformations and transformative change in sustainability science and policy. Second, the narrow framing of "radical" socioecological transformations, which include only the structural/systemic aspects of socioecological destruction, but ignore the ideational, including ontological foundations of socioecological crises. In response to these two trends, this book aims to reclaim socioecological transformations as radical, justice-centred concept and praxis, which tackle the deeper roots of the current socioecological violence and oppression, that touches deep down to the materialist-dualist worldview that has helped the establishment and maintenance of the colonial-racist-capitalist structures of oppression. Second, it aims to expand the meaning of radical transformations to include, in addition to resistance of current structures, the strategies and responses that challenge and seek to reinvent the dualist-materialist worldview onto which those structures rest. Such strategies and responses of transformations include in addition to active resistance, also the practice and embodiment of deep interconnectedness, kindness, and openness, which help us perceive and experience ourselves as part-wholes of One existence.Socioecological Transformations is vital reading for students, researchers, and policy players who want to embrace and effectuate radical change in the face of socioecological crises. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

ISBN 978-1-032-99004-0 hard ¥40,991.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
Between 2009 and 2024, the Anthropocene Working Group, an interdisciplinary team of geologists, archaeologists, Earth systems scientists, historians of science, and one lawyer, sought to formalise the Anthropocene as a formal unit of the Geologic Time Scale. Science, Politics, and the Anthropocene Working Group: What was the Anthropocene? presents the only comprehensive, ethnographic and history of science study of the Anthropocene Working Group's formalisation effort. Drawing on original archival research, this book provides a history of the formalisation procedure, as well as the practices of measurement and correlation, particular to the amendment of the Geologic Time Scale.Through participant observation, this book explains how the Anthropocene Working Group those methods and practices to situate contemporary society within the context of 4.5 billion years of Earth history. Positioning contemporary debates concerning the Anthropocene within a historical appraisal of geoscience, What was the Anthropocene? offers a unique, multidisciplinary perspective on how scientific knowledge is shaped and legitimised under conditions of climate crisis. Science, Politics, and the Anthropocene Working Group: What was the Anthropocene? provides an invaluable resource for scholars of all levels studying geosciences, the history of science, social studies of science, and the Anthropocene.

Climate Security in the Indo-Pacific: Variations, Contestations and Convergence of Security Practices. (ThirdWorlds) 106 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <748-621>
ISBN 978-1-041-07840-1 hard ¥40,991.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book explores the intersection of climate change and security in the Indo-Pacific, from the South China Sea disputes to national and regional security practices in India, Japan and Southeast Asia, highlighting the vulnerability of countries facing extreme weather, sea-level rise, and geopolitical tensions. The Indo-Pacific is the world's most exposed region to natural hazards, and climate change is highly likely to impact the frequency and severity of these events, threatening people's lives and livelihoods. Over the last two decades, research into the security implications of climate change has gained considerable interest among scholars and policy analysts across the world. Evidence-based research has shown how the impact of climate change such as sea-level rise, long droughts and extreme weather events have led to loss of livelihoods, economic downturns, forced migration and health threats from emerging infectious diseases. The effects of climate change in turn have led to greater potential for conflicts breaking out in societies most affected by climate change. As countries in the region face both climate challenges and strategic competition, their experiences offer valuable insights into how we can tackle this issue. This book is essential reading for students, scholars and policymakers engaged in the fields of climate change, security studies, and international relations. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly.

Worster, Donald,
Be Fruitful and Multiply: How Fertility and Innovation Have Changed Humankind and the Earth. 320 pp. 2026:1 (Yale U. Pr., US) <748-73>
ISBN 978-0-300-27897-2 hard ¥6,756.- (税込) US$ 32.50
A groundbreaking history that explores how human desires have affected our relationship with the natural world, and why this is a cause for hope Donald Worster looks back at over 200,000 years of Homo sapiens sapiens to show how human nature, especially the drive for food and sex, has responded to environmental conditions throughout history. Examining how this process led from a foraging lifestyle to the agrarian revolution and then to the capitalist way of life, Worster brings us face to face with a third transformation of human society that is beginning to take shape in China: an ecological civilization. This meticulously researched book explores how human desires have driven us to overrun our environments, and how we have adapted by creating new relationships with Earth. Tying the past to the future and humans to the planet, Worster acknowledges that we are at a potentially dangerous tipping point. Yet he offers a surprisingly optimistic vision, full of faith in the strength of our human desires, to help us develop exciting futures in a changing world-as we have done time and again-and achieve a good life for the billions of us trying to survive on a finite planet.

Stories of Human Resilience in a Changing Climate. (Routledge Focus on Environment and Sustainability) 132 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <748-780>
ISBN 978-1-032-79751-9 hard ¥14,979.- (税込) GB£ 52.99
Stories of Human Resilience in a Changing Climate offers a captivating glimpse into the human face of climate change.Despite extreme climate-related events witnessed globally, many struggle to connect such global phenomena to their own lives in a tangible way. As a result, there is still a strong disconnect between the general awareness of climate change and the sense of urgency that inspires action. This book fills a critical void in the field by sharing eleven real-life experiences across five continents of the world, featuring ordinary people facing and adapting to the consequences of climate change in its different forms. Through gripping accounts of a nomad having to relocate from the desert to the nearest city, an indigenous person fighting back for land rights, and a winemaker finding creative solutions to increasing heatwaves, among other stories, the book humanizes the challenges of climate change. By weaving scientific data with personal stories, the chapters deliver a compelling call to move beyond mere acknowledgment of the problem towards transformative action that respects the balance of ecosystems, fosters sustainable practices, and redefines our relationship with nature. Overall, the book highlights the urgent need for global awareness on what ultimately represents one of the most pressing challenges of our time, leaving readers inspired and empowered to create a more sustainable and resilient future. This accessible and impactful book will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change and environmental sciences and communication, as well as community leaders and NGOs wanting to understand practical examples and insights of climate change phenomena.

Bouchard, Jack,
Terra Nova: Food, Water, and Work in an Early Atlantic World. 344 pp. 2026:1 (Yale U. Pr., US) <748-782>
ISBN 978-0-300-26435-7 hard ¥7,900.- (税込) US$ 38.00
A bottom-up story of the fishworkers, whalers, First Nations, merchantwomen, oceans, and animals who together made a new colonial world in the early Atlantic In the early decades of the sixteenth century, mariners from across Europe forged a vast seasonal fishery in the northwest Atlantic. They called this floating colony Terra Nova and laid the foundation for a history of extracting food and fuel that extended into the twentieth century. The history of Terra Nova, once one of the largest European colonies in the Atlantic basin, has never before been considered in its entirety or in its proper Atlantic context. Historian Jack Bouchard tells the story of Terra Nova, showing that its early development was shaped by colonial histories across the Atlantic world. He demonstrates that when we put food production, ocean environments, and maritime labor at the center of the story, we can see the overlooked lives and voices of those who made change in these early years. The result is a new history of the Atlantic world: one where humans migrate in the wake of ice and fish, where Indigenous and Arctic trade routes are joined to transatlantic exchange, where colonies exist without settlement or empire, and that centers the role of food production, labor, and maritime landscapes in our shared history.

Caballero, Miguel,
The Monument of Tomorrow: Creative Conservation and the Spanish War. 254 pp. 2025:7 (Pennsylvania State U. Pr., US) <748-783>
ISBN 978-0-271-09923-1 hard ¥18,708.- (税込) US$ 89.99
Rupture, iconoclasm, and tabula rasa are concepts commonly used to describe the approach to cultural heritage associated with the avant-garde and revolutionary politics during the early twentieth century. Highlighting artists and radical intellectuals who worked to protect public monuments in 1910-1950s Spain, The Monument of Tomorrow challenges the persistent narrative, imposed by Francoism, of an iconoclastic Second Republic in Spain.Author Miguel Caballero draws on a wide range of sources to examine how artists, architects, writers, and activists transformed monument and heritage conservation into a progressive, experimental cause in their fight against fascism. During the Spanish War, with its devastating air raids, these individuals were motivated by the "defense of culture" to become determined conservationists. Caballero's research incorporates surviving monuments, architectural plans, propaganda posters, and literary works, including novels, plays, and poetry. The war, Caballero argues, became a laboratory for experiments in conserving and redefining monuments and national heritage. Modernist-style protective structures, for example, were built atop Madrid's historic monuments, including statues of Cybele, Neptune, and Phillip III in Plaza Mayor. Such innovations later influenced strategies for safeguarding monuments during the Second World War. This history, Caballero argues, makes the Spanish War pivotal to development of the concept of World Heritage. Ultimately, The Monument of Tomorrow shows that heritage conservation does not have to be politically conservative. Those interested in anti-fascism, art history, modern architecture, modernism, cultural heritage, conservation and preservation, Iberian studies, and war studies should find valuable insights in this innovative, original work.

ISBN 978-0-300-26447-0 hard ¥7,276.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *
The remarkable history of Britain and its animals, told through ten iconic species Have you ever wondered why we count sheep to get to sleep? Or where the phrase "red herring" comes from? Across British history, animals have been written about in poetry, painted in oils, and even recorded in law. Loved or feared, familiar or endangered, animals are everywhere to be seen. In this enchanting, beautifully illustrated study, Karen R. Jones takes a journey through the history of ten animals to show the extraordinary story of "beastly" Britain. Jones looks at animals including foxes and hedgehogs, newts and beetles, ghostly hounds and even the Loch Ness Monster. She reveals the place of animals in British cultural identity and sheds new light on the most iconic moments of British history, from the Black Death to World War II. The story of these isles may be told by human voices, but it is fully brought to life by listening to the squawks, bellows, and howls that make Britain what it is.

Vegan Witchcraft: Contemporary Magical Practice and Multispecies Social Change. (Routledge Studies in Animals, Society and the Environment) 260 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <748-806>
ISBN 978-1-032-64974-0 hard ¥40,991.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
ISBN 978-1-032-64971-9 paper ¥11,304.- (税込) GB£ 39.99
Vegan Witchcraft is the first book to blend theories of animal rights, feminism, and modern witchcraft in pursuit of total liberation.Perhaps the most foundational of all ethics in modern witchcraft is the creed: Do no harm. Despite this, multi-species suffering persists in non-vegan witchcraft. Vegan Witchcraft examines this intriguing conflict, unpacking the role of Nonhuman Animals in modern witchcraft from a vegan feminist perspective to illuminate inequalities that persist in alternative spiritual practices in the West. Recognising Nonhuman Animals as comrades instead of consumables, vegan witchcraft confronts the harm imposed on nature, humans, and other animals and identifies witchery as a powerful conduit for social change that draws its energy from plant-based foods, multispecies solidarity, and feminine power. The book critically analyses popular witchcraft pathways in Britain and America to interrogate the many ways in which Nonhuman Animals are overlooked, objectified, or exploited, highlighting theological inconsistencies and missed opportunities that might be overcome to create a stronger practice for women and their communities. It reimagines witchcraft practice and lore to manifest justice and compassion for fellow humans, Nonhuman Animals, and nature. Veganism is advanced as a magical practice of self-care, community responsibility, conscious consumption, societal transformation, and environmental protection. The book calls for the redirection of the modern witch's path toward a just world and away from the systematic symbolic and material exploitation of Nonhuman Animals that permeates witchcraft today. This book will be essential reading for those interested in critical animal studies, animal rights, ecofeminism, vegan religious studies, environmental philosophy and witchcraft.

Organize or Burn: How New York Socialists Fight for Climate Survival. 336 pp. 2025:10 (New York U. Pr., US) <748-580>

A successful political playbook for fighting climate change and expanding democracy from the New York socialist movement Climate inaction is already causing widespread suffering and devastation around the world. How can citizens take collective action? Fabian Holt argues that we must go beyond protest and direct action, and turn to the potential of hybrid organizations that bring together social movements and political parties. One such "movement party" with recent political success is the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA), which has become the city's main organization for movement climate politics, running multi-year climate pressure campaigns and a slate of climate-focused electoral campaigns, as well as spearheading the first Green New Deal legislation in the country, the New York State Build Public Renewables Act of 2023. Organize or Burn situates the NYC-DSA in the history of the democratic socialist movement in the United States, combining a political history of the insurgent international left with a richly textured local ethnography of the organization's place in the climate movement and relationship to the Democratic Party. Holt argues that NYC-DSA has developed a distinct approach to political organizing that has broad relevance to citizen climate mobilization. The organizational innovation specifically involves integrating micro-level organizing in individual campaigns and macro-level organization-building, synthesizing approaches from traditions of social movements and electoral campaigns in the US. Ultimately, Holt shows that NYC-DSA can offer powerful lessons in how political collective action can be meaningful in the present moment of political turbulence, from the very concrete perspective of a local movement world. An engaging read for political organizers, scholars, and concerned citizens, Organize or Burn provides new insights and solutions for the climate crisis.

ISBN 978-0-300-25999-5 hard ¥6,237.- (税込) US$ 30.00
A vital account of the state of the Arctic today-emphasising the twin dangers of climate change and geopolitical competition Nowhere is the dual threat of climate change and geopolitical contest felt more strongly than in the Arctic. Sea ice is declining rapidly, wildfires are burning, and permafrost is thawing. All the while, global interest is gathering apace as the region transforms from being a frozen desert into an international waterway. Mia Bennett and Klaus Dodds examine the state of the Arctic today, showing how the region is becoming a space of experimentation for everything from Indigenous governance to subsea technologies. Growing geopolitical competition is accompanying environmental disruption. Countries including Russia, China, and the United States are investing in the Arctic and consolidating their interests in strategic access, resource exploitation, and alliance-building. The consequences of this emerging Arctic Anthropocene are truly global-from rising sea levels due to melting glaciers to tensions between great powers determined to protect their territory and resources, and the well-being of Indigenous Peoples who have fought for centuries for rights and recognition.

Reimagining Resources and Community Development: Lessons from Newfoundland and Labrador. (Earthscan Studies in Natural Resource Management) 168 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <748-216>
ISBN 978-1-041-02632-7 hard ¥14,979.- (税込) GB£ 52.99
This book analyzes the experiences of communities facing major challenges relating to resource dependency and community sustainability, drawing on specific examples from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It offers a methodology for self-analysis to communities facing similar challenges, inspired by the ups and downs, local strategies for self-analysis and collaborative work towards new futures in this Canadian province.Life in hundreds of small coastal settlements revolved around the cod fishery, until the fishery was no more. Communities have had to rethink their strengths, to reconsider what their assets could be, and imagine potential futures after events such as colonization and the collapse of the fishing industry. Their experiences are relevant for other parts of the world where formerly central resources are depleted or lose their value, and communities face the need for transition. The capacity to imagine different futures is rooted in the ability to critically consider strengths and weaknesses alike. The authors skilfully dissect and illuminate the conditions that can enable the reconsideration of local assets and narratives, towards a more sustainable future. The variety of these conditions, ranging from social memory to public debate, policy tools and institutional capacity, decision arenas, paths for participation and distributed strategic leadership, are laid out clearly and illustrated vividly through vignettes written by individuals who participated in the events described. The book culminates in a flexible yet clearly structured method of self-analysis, useful for communities interested in rethinking their strengths, and working towards new futures. This book will appeal to students, scholars, and professionals interested in community development and redevelopment and offers a new understanding of the mechanics of local and regional resilience. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Future Transitions in the Mining Industry: Challenges, Controversies and Responses. (Routledge Studies of the Extractive Industries and Sustainable Development) 236 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <748-218>
ISBN 978-1-032-32984-0 hard ¥40,991.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This volume focuses on mining and the challenges for this industry as it transitions and evolves as the demand for products and responsible and sustainable mining ever increases.Mining is a prerequisite for modern society, yet the industry is often criticized for having many negative environmental and social impacts. The volume explores the challenges, controversies, and responses that arise when a society is reliant on the products of mining to maintain their standard of living, yet are simultaneously calling for the implementation of sustainable practices, with many communities also being resistant to mining activities taking place in their own location. Many transitions which present a solution to one problem can often lead to new issues and developments elsewhere. For example, the electrification of vehicles will help to mitigate climate change, but this will simultaneously increase the demand for minerals required for batteries. The acceptance of, or resistance to, mining varies from location to location and across different scales, with key factors relating to the social and environmental impacts, and the economic benefits. One common tension revolves around whether local communities really benefit economically from mining activities and even if they do, they could now be negatively impacted by the digitization of the industry which will naturally lead to a reduction in the number of jobs. This volume explains how transitions of these types are inextricably linked by demand, acceptance and the perception of benefits, and that as the industry evolves more tensions and controversies will develop. This book will be of great interest to scholars and students of mining and the extractive industries, transitions, and sustainable development, as well as professionals working in natural resource management.

Focusing on the Qu?ng Yen coal basin in northern Vietnam, known for its world's largest anthracite coal mines, this deeply researched study demonstrates how mining came to dominate the landscape, restructuring the region's environment and upending local communities. Nguyen pays particular attention to the role of various non-state local actors, often underrepresented in grand narratives of modern Vietnam, including Vietnamese and Chinese migrant mine workers, timber traders, loggers and local ethnic minorities. Breaking away from the metropole-colony paradigm, Nguyen offers a new lens through which to explore the dynamics of colonial rule and the importance of inter-Asian networks, arguing that the colonial energy regime must be understood as a complex, multi-layered interaction between empire, capital, labour, water, sea, land and timber forests.

This volume synthesizes energy history in Mexico from pre-Conquest times to the present. It traces human development from a low-energy, sustainable existence to fossil-fuel based non-sustainability.The book familiarizes readers with different energy sources, what the advantages and disadvantages of each source are, and how the importance of each energy source has changed over time. From early agricultural beginnings and Spanish-introduced energy innovations to the rise of coal and oil, the volume analyzes how evolving energy sources produced sweeping environmental and social change. It also studies economic history from the approach of the emerging field of biophysical economics, recognizing the often-overlooked role of energy in Mexico's development. Linking this development to climate change, the book discusses the ways in which Mexico and the global south are impacted by this crisis, despite doing little to cause climate change themselves. Later chapters inform readers of how energy issues have shaped U.S.-Mexican relations throughout the 20th century and into today.A History of Energy in Mexico will be of value to students of environmental, economic, and Mexican history as well as political scientists, economists and anthropologists.

This book identifies and discusses opportunities and constraints in applying the sustainability paradigm to urbanization. It integrates this wide concept with 'local competitiveness' and focuses on the role of both general and specific political action in shaping the economic structure of a region.By linking sustainability and local competitiveness within metropolitan regions, it offers an innovative exploration of urbanization processes. Moving beyond the usual institutional and regional economic approaches, the book integrates perspectives from economic geography, sociology, demography, ecology, and planning. It presents practical tools and real-world data, enabling readers to interpret and delve into new urban development paths. By exploring the interaction between urban sustainability and economic competitiveness, a framework is provided that supports informed policy-making decisions at local, regional, and national scales. This book is written for academics and students-from undergraduates to doctoral candidates-who want a clear, practical look at how local economies, sustainability, and competitiveness come together. It is also helpful for professionals, policymakers, and for anyone curious about how economic growth might become a long-term sustainable political goal.

カントと環境哲学
Vereb, Zachary,
Kant and Environmental Philosophy: The Climate Crisis and the Imperative of Sustainability. 250 pp. 2025:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <748-35>
ISBN 978-1-009-66493-6 hard ¥25,443.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
Kant and Environmental Philosophy starts with problems of the Anthropocene and looks to Immanuel Kant for answers. It offers a close reading of Kant's texts, arguing that the views we find in his ethical, political, and aesthetic theory are helpful for making sense of ecological challenges like climate change. The book clarifies our duties regarding climate extinction, geoengineering, consumerism, and future generations. It provides insights and solutions for obstacles to sustainability, including corruption and the possibility of civil collapse. In environmental philosophy, historical commentators mine familiar philosophers for insights to these problems, but Kant is often seen as an anthropocentric and dualistic individualist in a world dominated by consequentialist thinking, and accordingly he is overlooked as relevant for environmental philosophy. This book challenges that conclusion, and its comprehensive examination of Kant's texts provides lessons for environmental philosophy and climate ethics at a time when a fresh perspective is desperately needed.
