Kassab, Hanna Samir / Ghosn, Natalie Ann (eds.),
Non-Western Middle Powers in the Multipolar Order. (Routledge Advances in International Relations and Global Politics) 168 pp. 2025:10 (Routledge, UK) <748-604>
ISBN 978-1-041-05224-1 hard ¥14,979.- (税込) GB£ 52.99
Non-Western Middle Powers in the Multipolar Order explores the changing international order, articulating the critical and growing importance of non-western states to the emerging global order. It brings together international scholars to provide new insights on the evolution of international order, as global politics moves from an American-western dominated one to one where major players are from the Global South. They present evidence from Brazil, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and India help explain, analyze and understand the main political, security and economic challenges in these countries. Questions asked include:? What factors explain the rise of new non-western middle powers?? How would theories of international relations, specifically realism, liberalism, and Marxism change due to their rise?? How would the rise of these non-western middle powers shape the emerging multipolar order? An invaluable collection for scholars and students of International Relations and International Security, that will also be of great interest to scholars with a broader interest in the ever-evolving world order.

The Role of Threat Perceptions in International Relations: Analysing China's Rise in the Indo-Pacific. (Indo-Pacific in Context) 248 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <748-607>
ISBN 978-1-032-78129-7 hard ¥39,578.- (税込) GB£ 140.00

With China's rise in the Indo-Pacific, this book systematically analyses and explores the complex reality of questions regarding threat perception - why and when do states perceive or don't perceive China as a threat, what influences or drives these perceptions? How have their perceptions evolved and changed over time? To provide deeper insight, it moves beyond traditional Realist explanations of the "China threat". Additionally, by engaging in a diverse theoretical discussion, it studies the various perspectives of key Indo-Pacific players: India, Japan, China, US, Australia, ASEAN, and South Korea.Mapping the formation and changing perceptions of threat regarding China's rise, this book would be essential reading for scholars, students and researchers of International Relations studying the Indo-Pacific region, threat perception, global politics, geopolitics, foreign policy, Chinese studies, middle powers, and strategic studies. It will also be useful handy reference for foreign policy experts, government bureaucrats and think tanks.

Climate Security in the Indo-Pacific: Variations, Contestations and Convergence of Security Practices. (ThirdWorlds) 106 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <748-621>
ISBN 978-1-041-07840-1 hard ¥40,991.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book explores the intersection of climate change and security in the Indo-Pacific, from the South China Sea disputes to national and regional security practices in India, Japan and Southeast Asia, highlighting the vulnerability of countries facing extreme weather, sea-level rise, and geopolitical tensions. The Indo-Pacific is the world's most exposed region to natural hazards, and climate change is highly likely to impact the frequency and severity of these events, threatening people's lives and livelihoods. Over the last two decades, research into the security implications of climate change has gained considerable interest among scholars and policy analysts across the world. Evidence-based research has shown how the impact of climate change such as sea-level rise, long droughts and extreme weather events have led to loss of livelihoods, economic downturns, forced migration and health threats from emerging infectious diseases. The effects of climate change in turn have led to greater potential for conflicts breaking out in societies most affected by climate change. As countries in the region face both climate challenges and strategic competition, their experiences offer valuable insights into how we can tackle this issue. This book is essential reading for students, scholars and policymakers engaged in the fields of climate change, security studies, and international relations. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly.

日本と東アジアにおける開発の代替的歴史
Amos, Timothy D. / Ishii, Akiko / Lim, Samson (eds.),
Alternative Histories of Development in Japan and East Asia: Unthinking Modernization, Recreating Lifeworlds. (Routledge Studies in the Modern History of Asia) 256 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <748-639>
ISBN 978-1-032-80039-4 hard ¥40,991.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book examines the history of development in East Asia in terms of material change and human-nature relations from the perspectives of people living in Asia in modern and pre-modern periods.By challenging the reader to "unthink" what modern development is, each chapter offers a case study which discovers and reconstructs indigenous forms of knowledge and local practice related to material change. In doing so, the book illuminates the point where modern notions of development emerged and thus aids in the process of understanding how they achieved hegemonic status. This in turn expands the notion of what development can and should entail and provides valuable pathways for rethinking our relations with the social world and the environment. This book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of Asian development, Asian history and environmental history.

解放されたアフリカ人と奴隷貿易の終焉
Richards, Jake Subryan,
The Bonds of Freedom: Liberated Africans and the End of the Slave Trade. 336 pp. 2025:10 (Yale U. Pr., US) <748-645>
ISBN 978-0-300-26320-6 hard ¥7,900.- (税込) US$ 38.00
The story of the long fight for freedom of African captives rescued from the illegal slave trade only to be forced back into bondage The Bonds of Freedom tells the forgotten story of people seized from slave ships by maritime patrols, "liberated," then forced into bonded labor between 1807 and 1880. Using extensive archival research from Sierra Leone, South Africa, Brazil, Cuba, the United Kingdom, and the United States, historian Jake Subryan Richards uncovers the contrasting ideas and practices of authoritarianism and freedom that empires and liberated Africans developed during the protracted end of the illegal slave trade. Following the Africans' journeys from enslavement to liberation, Richards recounts their capture and embarkation on ships that participated in the vast slave trade to Brazil and Cuba, the maritime seizure of those ships, and the adjudication that assigned freed captives to bonded labor. The captives fought against their bondage as state agents limited their freedom of choice and movement. The liberated Africans' story shows that, far from following a straightforward path to freedom, these men and women navigated anti-slave-trade laws that both subjected them to authoritarian control and provided a domain for them to create their own visions of freedom. Through meticulous research and engaging narrative, Richards sheds light on their legal battles, community-building efforts, and ongoing quest for justice and autonomy in the face of enduring challenges.
