In the current sociopolitical landscape, hyperandrogenism has become a lightning rod for collective anxieties about transgender identities and "preserving" women's sports, as well as misunderstandings about the inherent fairness of sport and the biological mechanisms that quantify athletic advantage. Perched behind this discourse, people living with hyperandrogenism face ongoing destabilization of healthcare access and find their experiences are often silenced and marginalized.

This book offers a novel therapeutic method for individuals with hyperandrogenism to share their experiences using literary hypertext-a form of digital storytelling that invites readers to participate by selecting hyperlinks. Focusing on a case study of women and nonbinary individuals with hyperandrogenism, ten hypertext authors' narratives are explored. Their experiences highlight the therapeutic value of writing a hypertext illness narrative by mapping reflective experiences through hyperlinks and sharing their narrative with the broader community.

Providing interdisciplinary insights into the lived experience of hyperandrogenism, as well as practical guidance on the clinical use of literary text, this book will appeal to researchers and clinicians interested in hyperandrogenism, gender studies, health humanities, narrative therapy, electronic media, game design and feminist media studies.

Chapter 4 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons [Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the ways in which research and perspectives from the social sciences and humanities can be combined for a more effective understanding of climate change and its impacts. Climate change affects all aspects of life, influencing personal lifestyle choices and political perceptions. Beyond legal and political measures, the engagement of individuals and local communities has become essential for necessary systemic change. Understanding the complex human and social dynamics is key to achieving real change, in favour of a resilient and low-carbon future.

This book highlights the theoretical and practical contributions of the social sciences and humanities in understanding how humans perceive and respond to climate change, and the ways in which they can be combined to fight climate disruption and its effects. These interdisciplinary approaches draw upon fields such as communication sciences, linguistics, psychology, anthropology, educational sciences, management studies, and philosophy, to explore the nexus between climate change and human and social dynamics in individual, collective, and political actions.

Drawing on a wide range of interesting case studies, the book highlights opportunities for collaboration between disciplines by combining methodological and theoretical components and synthesizing the research results. Ultimately, the book demonstrates that a more effective collaboration between the social sciences and humanities is required to fully understand the complexities of our relationship with climate change, and to pave the way to a real ecological transition. The book will be of use to scholars, students, researchers, and practitioners interested in communication studies, psychology, linguistics, sociology, philosophy, management, educational studies, transition studies, and connected fields.

Climate Justice: Resisting Marginalisation examines the impact of climate change on marginalized communities across the globe and the different ways of resisting these impacts. The book underlines the imbalanced consequences of climate change, driven by the power disparities between the global North and South. It investigates how climate change aggravates structural inequalities, focusing on the intersectionality of gender, race, technology, and politics. Through a study of resistance and marginalization, the book analyses how these systemic injustices are perpetuated, while offering understandings into the struggles and strategies to build a justice oriented approach to combating climate change. Marie-Dominique Chenu demonstrates how this once condemned theologian influenced the major shifts of twentieth-century Catholicism and reveals the relevance of his thought for contemporary theology.

In 1942, historian Marie-Dominique Chenu was removed from his teaching position at Le Saulchoir, the French Dominican school of theology, and his groundbreaking new publication was placed on the Catholic Church's Index of Forbidden Books. Yet only two decades later, the Catholic hierarchy embraced many of his ideas at the Second Vatican Council. Although Chenu's pioneering work helped to usher in a new era, his influence on the Catholic Church remains overlooked and underexplored.

Drawing upon extensive new archival research, Mary Kate Holman provides a captivating account of Chenu's life and how his theology contributed to the church's opening to the modern world and shaped the next generation of theologians. Holman presents the distinctive elements of Chenu's theology, identifies his major contributions to contemporary Catholic theology, and proposes a constructive retrieval of his thought for a renewed ecclesiology in the twenty-first century.

In The Light of Tabor, award-winning theologian David Bentley Hart proposes an approach to the nature of Christ that is profoundly radical yet deeply classical.

For centuries, Christian theology has rested on a paradox. Beginning with the Council of Chalcedon in the fifth century, the major Christian traditions have held that Jesus Christ combines two distinct natures: he is fully God and, somehow, fully human. Yet this tenet has traditionally invited irresolvable metaphysical contradictions. David Bentley Hart delves deeply into the seemingly irresoluble tensions, providing the first theological attempt to show how the logic of the earliest churches' angelomorphic Christology is continuous with later Chalcedonian orthodoxy. Hart draws on theologians from every epoch of Christian thought, from Origen to Sergei Bulgakov, while making free use of concepts from other spiritual traditions, such as Vedanta.

The Light of Tabor proposes an approach to Christology that is thoroughly monistic, both as regards Being and as regards nature. Hart argues that the only coherent reading of the figure of Christ is one that fully embraces the essential unity of all things divine and natural through him, proposing an approach to Christology that affirms classical doctrine without retaining the dualistic presuppositions that have haunted theology since the age of the great councils.

Ghosts in the Dating App Machine offers a critical examination of the shift to dating apps to illustrate key features of a broader shift to a mode of "data" colonialism based on datafication and AI orchestration.

This book analyses 48 in-depth and mediated interviews, forums, blogs, and official statements made by dating apps. It situates this transition within the broader culture of data colonialism through close readings of science fiction, suggesting the world has become like Us, where doppelgangers constituted from reprehensible proclivities have emerged as digital profiles reflected back to users through the horrific play of social media mirrors to govern their encounters against their wishes. These mirrors allow media companies to conduct surreptitious experiments on users' dispossessed desires, devise digital doppelgangers from those they disavow, and compel behaviors that are lucrative precisely because they are misaligned with humane values. Yet this horrific play of mirrors is not inevitable. By attending to the ghosts of colonialism unleashed by media companies through the approach developed in this book, it is still possible to galvanize the collective will to combat data colonialism and strive to create a world where love disentangled from colonial modes of desire is possible.

This study will interest scholars attempting to understand the rapidly evolving ecology of dating apps within the areas of digital media, media sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, and media and communication studies.

Environmental Hermeneutics in the Anthropocene is a diverse collection of essays that approach contemporary environmental problems with the tools and perspectives provided by the tradition of philosophical hermeneutics, advanced by philosophers such as Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Paul Ricoeur.
Engaging both established and new voices, this book presents a significant contribution to the field by expanding the scope of philosophical hermeneutics to environmental issues. It addresses a broad scope of environmental topics such as the Anthropocene, climate change, degrowth, environmental justice, the limits of language in understanding nature, and environmental aesthetics in environmental practice. Together, the chapters show the crisis of regional and global environmental problems to be in part a crisis of interpretation. The ways that human beings understand their relationship to environments shape and determine how to act and live within places. Yet the values and ideals that different people have about their lived environments often come into conflict. Thus hermeneutics plays an important role in environmental discourse: it helps adjudicate these conflicting understandings.
This collection of essays demonstrates the unique way that environmental hermeneutics can be employed to understand environments in this age of the Anthropocene. It will appeal to researchers and upper-level students in environmental humanities, environmental studies, ethics and philosophy.

While the impacts of climate change become increasingly severe, efforts to prevent them suffer one blow after the other, as seen in the rise of far-right populist parties in Western democracies. Why does denialism thrive when blatantly contradicted by the realities before our very eyes, be it wild-fires, floods, drought, and melting glaciers? Should we abandon the assumption that the more solid the knowledge about climate change, the more eager will ordinary people as well as political leaders be to take action?

This book sets out to explain the contradiction witnessed between knowledge and action. Inspired by Clive Hamilton's claim that "denial is due to a surplus of culture rather than a deficit of information", the book critiques the focus on "cognitive disso-nance" in individual agents advocated by climate psychology as well as the individualistic bias in liberal political theory. To get out of the current theoretical as well as political impasse, the author suggests three moves are necessary: from knowledge to first-hand experience, and so to feelings; from the tension within the individual to the social organization of denial; and from the obsession with personal responsibility - nowadays in the guise of building resilience - to exposing the complicity of the culture of neoliberalism in the intimately intertwined crisis of politics and the climate alike.

A highly timely and sharp analysis of the roots of inaction and denial and possible strategies for resistance, the book will appeal to scholars and upper-level students with interests in social, political, and environmental philosophy and psychology; political theory; and environmental studies.

This book provides a fresh look at Alvar Aalto's regional and community planning work, particularly the ways in which he incorporated sustainability, resiliency, energy, and health, and examines how contemporary architects and planners can learn from this approach for the betterment of 21st-century urban design and our future cities.

The Alvar Aalto Atelier planned and promoted regional development that combined ecological features, considered density, and offered a framework for informality, including flexible, adaptable infrastructures, with physical plans integrating communities with nature. These plans were largely suburban and contained vital lessons on how to deal with sprawl, traffic, landscape, energy, labor, and industry. This book analyzes letters, writings, and drawings not seen outside the Alvar Aalto Foundation, to review alternative ways to examine suburban landscapes and urban typologies, through sustainability, ecology, and use of digital technologies.

This is an essential read for all those interested in the urban design work of Alvar Aalto. Written in an accessible way for those new to the work of Aalto, Architecture and Urban Design students of all levels will also find this a helpful guide on ecologically and socially responsible design.

The Routledge Handbook of Heritage and Creative Practice explores the role of creativity as a tool for critical engagement with heritage. It provides a comprehensive study of ways in which heritage and creative practice intersect, in research, in practice and in a transnational context.

This book introduces researchers, students, creative and heritage practitioners to contemporary practices from a breadth of perspectives. The transnational nature of its scope is key to the exploration of how 'heritage' and 'creativity' are ever evolving, conceived of differently in different contexts, and intersect in interesting ways through the work of creative practitioners. The volume argues that heritage itself is a creative practice, such that the 'creative' work that occurs in these examples is not singular and distinct; rather the symbiotic reciprocity between heritage and creativity is intersectional and embedded. The international array of authors and differing approaches from around the world, including case studies from Africa, Bahrain, Brazil, Caribbean, Columbia, China, Hong Kong, Iraq, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates provide a global approach to the subject, while the diverse range of topics covered, including urban renewal, the coronavirus pandemic, memorial culture, public art and colonial heritage, allows readers to gain insight into the richness of practices across a diversity of disciplines and contexts.

This volume offers a significant and new contribution to heritage studies that will be of interest to scholars and students in heritage and museum studies, as well those in the fields of art, architecture, anthropology, design, digital and curatorial studies. It also provides a valuable resource for artists, arts professionals, architects and museums and heritage practitioners.

This volume explores the intersection of political history and consumption history by conceptualizing the "politics of consumption" as a discursive process in which consumers and acts of consumption are framed and politicized by state- and market-driven actors for broader societal objectives. Drawing on a diverse range of case studies from the North Atlantic world between the early nineteenth century and the 1980s, the authors examine how power dynamics shape consumption practices, regulation, and discourse. The contributions in this study address key themes such as municipal governance of food markets, consumer citizenship in political debates, the nationalist framing of commodities, anti-imperial sartorial practices, and the rhetoric of consumer austerity during economic crises. By situating consumption within the communicative space of political ideologies, the volume highlights how discourses around consumption not only reflect but also actively construct social hierarchies, national identities, and economic policies. Ultimately, the study underscores the necessity of integrating discursive approaches with material analyses to deepen our historical understanding of the politicization of consumption.

This book will appeal to students, researchers and scholars of political history, consumption studies, and cultural history.

The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of History of Retailing and Consumption.

Everyday Life and Urban Studies revisits the ordinary routines that shape urban life during the crises-ridden last century and early new millennium. Vast parts of Henri Lefebvre's intellectual work on everyday life however remain underappreciated in urban studies. This book seeks to re-integrate Lefebvre's Critique of Everyday Life into studies of urbanization. Starting in the 1920s, the book realigns historical insights with contemporary urban phenomena to uncover patterns of capitalist urbanization. By showing the relevance of grasping the minutiae of everyday life to understanding cities, the urban and urbanization today; everyday life, space, and philosophy are brought back in tension. This work combines analytical-methodological exploration, pedagogic mission, and theoretical advances to carve out an everyday-theory-based approach to urban studies situated at the interface of the spatial arts, the humanities, and the social sciences. This book examines the transformative potential that lies hidden in everyday life thereby unravelling a way to nurture hope amid unsettled urban conditions.

The book is essential for students, faculty, and researchers in the fields of urban studies, city planning, urban design, human geography, sociology, cultural studies, and political science.

The local priest was the most ubiquitous embodiment of the Church for many people in medieval Christian Europe. By centring this key figure in post-Carolingian Europe, this book provides a fresh perspective on the transition between two focuses of historiographical attention, the Carolingian reform and the Gregorian reform. This pivot away from Church elites such as popes, bishops and abbots, and the institutional structures of dioceses and parishes, sheds light on new lines of continuity and moments of transformation, examining the resources and kinship ties of local priests and assessing their relationship with the bishop at both the collective and the individual level. It draws on a variety of methodologies and forms of evidence, ranging from the detailed study of specific manuscripts to wide-ranging overviews of liturgical and documentary evidence. Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis have made major inroads into the disciplines that make up the social sciences. Although commonly run together under the title of EMCA, what their relationship is to one another remains as elusive as the relationship between their respective founders, Harold Garfinkel and Harvey Sacks.

This book clarifies the nature of these relationships, demonstrating that Harvey Sacks' studies of the sequential organisation of conversation are the cardinal example of what Garfinkel described as an ethnomethodological alternate to traditional social science. However, over the decades that have passed since Garfinkel developed ethnomethodology, several confusions have arisen as to what he meant. The author argues that these have resulted in a blunting of Garfinkel's original intentions which compromise the adequacy of ethnomethodological description. In response, this book shows how Sacks' considerations of adequacy can ground ethnomethodology as a "natural observational science" that redirects it towards developing further coherent and precisely circumscribed bodies of work to those of Sacks' own coherent and precisely circumscribed studies.

It will appeal to both new and existing scholars of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, as well as those with interests in social theory, methodology, and those who have taken up the relevance of conversation analysis for their research and are interested in the ethnomethodological heritage of conversation analysis.

Provocative, interdisciplinary, and daringly critical, AI for Critical Interculturality doesn't spoon-feed ready-made answers but rather inspires readers to think, question and interrogate interculturality alongside AI.
In a world where AI is often feared as a threat to human intelligence and creativity, the book flips the script by positioning AI as a valuable partner in the study of interculturality as both a scientific and educational notion. How could AI help us dismantle biases, interrogate knowledge production/dissemination and foster deeper self-reflexivity in the broad field of Intercultural Communication Education and Research? What happens when we treat AI not as a passive tool but as an active interlocutor - one that mirrors our ideological blind spots and pushes us toward sharper criticality and reflexivity? Through rich theoretical and conceptual insights, real-world cases and interactive activities, this book equips readers to unmask ideologies in AI-generated knowledge about interculturality; leverage AI as a mirror to expose and confront personal and systemic biases; consider some language stratagems to disrupt linguistic norms in human-AI dialogue. More importantly, the author asks us to forge an ethical and non-utilitarian partnership with AI.
This boundary-shattering work invites students, educators and researchers of interculturality to envision and co-create the future of intercultural studies.

This book is the first to take a close look at artificial intelligence and neuroenhancement in the context of sport, and at the potential of these new technologies to act as enablers of neurodoping. It considers the interesting possibilities that these technologies raise for enhancing athletic performance and explores their implications for the ethics, integrity and governance of sport.

Featuring the work of leading researchers in sports ethics, bioethics, digital ethics and biotechnology, the book draws on multidisciplinary perspectives from philosophy, education, biology, neuroscience and more to shine light on a technological development that is not yet listed as a prohibited method in the WADA anti-doping code. Exploring fascinating topics including neurostimulation, brainchips, cyborgization and the importance of establishing sound ethical regulations, the book takes a positive ethical view, seeing the lack of previous work in this area as an opportunity to embed ethics in sports technology and promote AI for good in sport.

This book is important reading for any advanced student, researcher, administrator or policy-maker with an interest in the ethics of sport, sport technology, sport governance, or artificial intelligence.

? Spatial computing and its impact on digital interaction

? Digital twins in urban planning and management

? Avatars and social dynamics in virtual spaces

? Economic models emerging in the Metaverse

? The influence of gaming on immersive digital landscapes

Drawing from architecture, computer science, urban planning, geography, social studies, and economics, the authors provide a multidisciplinary analysis of how virtual cities are shaping our digital future. Using key case studies, they trace the evolution from early cyberspace concepts to current spatial computing technologies, offering insights into both historical context and future possibilities. The book addresses key questions about the opportunities and challenges presented by metaverse technologies, including issues of accessibility, creativity, and the future of humans and artificial intelligence co-existing, side by side, in digital spaces. It serves as a practical guide, equipping readers with the knowledge they need to navigate the future of urban life in virtual environments with a thought-provoking examination of how we might build, inhabit, and govern cities in the Metaverse.

The authors explore the concept of digital twins, demonstrating how these virtual replicas of physical spaces can revolutionise urban planning and management. They delve into the social aspects of the metaverse, examining how avatars shape our interactions and relationships in digital realms. Economic considerations are central to the book ethos, with an analysis of emerging models that often leverage blockchain technologies. The book addresses the challenges, potential pitfalls and ethical considerations in creating and inhabiting digital cities. At the same time, it takes a step back and examines already abandoned digital worlds, offering lessons from past attempts at creating virtual spaces.

Essential reading for urban planners, geographers, economists, technologists, policymakers, and anyone interested in the future of cities and digital interaction, Cities in the Metaverse provides a balanced, informed perspective on this rapidly evolving field.

Place and the Moving Image offers a rethinking of how experimental, essayistic film, engages with spatial knowledge and environmental awareness. At its heart is the concept of Moving Image Topography - a critical and artistic framework of thinking through the camera about the relationship between technological forms and place structures, and how these shape our experience of environments, including the natural, the built, and the lived.

Responding to urgent questions in eco-media and artistic research, Elisabeth Brun argues that place is not merely a setting or a backdrop, but a critical generative force in experimental film - a vital lens for understanding the eco-critical and epistemological potential of moving image arts and their modes of thinking. Through a rigorous and interdisciplinary approach that combines theory, close readings of essayist and materialist film practices, and artistic research in her sub-Arctic home village, Brun explores how the moving image can render visible the subtle dynamics between perception, environment, and technological mediation. Rather than separating theory and practice, this book shows how both emerge from the same topographical foundation.

At stake is not only how we understand film, but how we understand our own grounding - the inseparability of Earth's textures and human forms of experience, through which perspective itself can be (re)gained. Engaging scholars, artists, and practitioners- across fields such as film and media studies, visual art, design, architecture, and philosophy, this book will appeal to those interested in place, environmental aesthetics, indigenous perspectives, and critical film practice.

The experimental film 3xShapes of Home (2020) is central to this study and is included as a Routledge Support Material to this book.

This book explores the concept of estrangement from a psychoanalytic perspective, intertwining art and aesthetics to offer a paradigm of the aesthetic experience.

Gabriela Goldstein suggests that an unexpected encounter with a work of art may lead to a state of poetic estrangement, promoting a possible reorganization of its subject's psychic economy. The conceptual work is illuminated with vignettes exploring the experience of this state of estrangement, reflecting on the encounter between the subject and the other/Other, between analyst and patient and in the framework provided by the analytical situation. Finally, Goldstein considers how the metapsychology of aesthetic experience and its research contribute to clinical understanding of processes of deficient symbolization.

Art and Psychoanalysis will be key reading for psychoanalysts, artists, researchers, and teachers of art and psychoanalysis. It will also be of great interest to art therapists, students of art and the humanities, as well as other readers interested in an in-depth understanding of the aesthetic experience and creative processes.

In Becoming a Plebeian Leader, Jose Antonio Villarreal Velasquez examines situations where ordinary women and men become plebeian leaders in urban-popular neighborhoods.

Combining oral history, archival research, and ethnography, the book examines plebeian leaders' moral careers through and within the meaningful and fluctuating connections among urban-popular neighborhoods in the city, and the nation-state from 1960 to the present time. Specifically, Villarreal Velasquez reconstructs, compares, and explains the historical, sociological, and political formation of two plebeian leaders' moral career paths in Guayaquil (Ecuador); the skills, feelings, and knowledge they acquired to perform their tasks and operate within societal hegemonic frameworks and large-scale structural transformations.

Becoming a Plebeian Leader will be of interest to researchers studying urban popular politics in the Global South.

The green digital transition is underway. But what does this transition look like when dictated by the energy and resource demands of monopoly tech? How has this situation come to be? And where is it being resisted?

This provocative book uncovers the hidden intersections of land, resource extraction and climate policy in the transition to "greener" and "smarter" economies. Challenging eco-modern and techno-solutionist approaches, the book links narratives of sustainability with colonial histories and uneven development, arguing that tech-driven transitions replicate exploitative patterns of imperial capitalism. Using Ireland as a focal point, the authors show how the history and depth of the country's postcolonial dependency on multinational investment, especially US technology companies, comes into friction with disparate land-based struggles.

Thinking with these movements, the book offers a critique of dependent models of development and proposes an anti-imperialist approach to environmental politics.

The Academy Awards - or "the Oscars" - have held a unique position in defining and enacting "prestige" for film industries and their publics. In evaluating 'the best' of film, they wield cultural influence over such cinema practices as consumption and evaluation, filmmaking aesthetics and narratives, and the discursive activity of Hollywood's industrial agents and audiences. Oscar Bait: The Academy Awards & Cultural Prestige offers a comprehensive insight into how a film or star positions one's self as a viable competitor worthy of such consecration in new media contexts.

Based over three years of 'Oscars seasons' (2019-2021), rigorous analysis of film texts, awards telecasts, and circulating discursive media is built through an original scholarly framework for understanding modern cultural awards. Oscar Bait recontextualises the Oscars' complex legacy into a new media ecosystem, one in which their established value is undercut by declining broadcast viewership, the changing values and demands of global film publics, and influential discourses aiming to progress popular culture beyond its problematic histories. In this new paradigm of film production and consumption, Boucaut explores what the Oscars mean in a contemporary filmmaking landscape and what impacts established stereotypes of Oscar-worthiness - the colloquial 'Oscar Bait' - continue to hold over the awards.

Oscar Bait captures a dynamic snapshot of the Oscars and Hollywood in a critical era. It advances popular culture scholarship by developing an analytical framework for understanding disparate media texts within an awards season - and it critically updates Oscars knowledges for modern contexts. Readers interested in media and cultural studies, celebrity studies, persona studies, popular culture, and film will enjoy this book.

Islamically Integrated Psychotherapy and Domestic Abuse offers a culturally sensitive and comprehensive approach to understanding and addressing domestic abuse within Muslim communities.

The book begins by exploring what constitutes domestic abuse, drawing on British government and WHO definitions alongside insights from the Qur'an and Sunnah to present an Islamically integrated perspective. Khalida Haque then outlines the therapeutic framework through which her work has been designed, developed, and established. This foundation enables the thoughtful integration of Islamic psychology with contemporary psychotherapeutic approaches in practice. Chapters focused on therapeutic work with individuals, couples, families, and groups are enriched with case vignettes, illustrating how theory and Islamic principles come together in real-world interventions. The final chapters extend the discussion beyond the therapy room, sharing insights from community-based work in schools, with social services, third sector organisations, Muslim led agencies, mosques, and local centres.

Islamically Integrated Psychotherapy and Domestic Abuse is invaluable for practitioners, students, and community workers seeking to navigate the intersections of faith, culture, and therapeutic practice when responding to and working within cases of domestic abuse in Muslim communities.
