The bank failures of the early 2020s challenged the view that the financial reforms implemented after the 2007-2009 financial crisis had strengthened the robustness of the financial system.

Despite the commonly held belief that measures such as the Basel Framework and Dodd Frank Act had provided the financial sector with an effective shield against disruption, this book argues that the failure of these reforms to prevent further financial crises was not inevitable. The book contextualizes the long history of financial instability, elucidating the features of capitalism's current phase that make it so prone to financial crises, and highlighting other periods (notably the post-war period) characterized by remarkable stability. The book draws on post-Keynesian analyses of the evolution of capitalism and the endogenous instability of capitalist economies - by Minsky in particular - and incorporates insights from French regulatory theory. From this perspective, financial crises are not the result of exogenous deviant behaviors on the part of ill-intentioned or incompetent agents but the result of the normal functioning of capitalist economies. In this respect, the 2007-2009 crisis and the bank failures of 2023 are manifestations of this endogenous financial instability. Preventing their resurgence requires an alternative understanding of financial instability, one that interrogates the intrinsic dynamics of the financial system, engages in a critical examination of extant regulatory frameworks, questions the effectiveness of resolution mechanisms, and considers the increasingly urgent climate-related financial risks.

This book will be of interest to researchers working on issues of financial instability and regulation as well as money and banking more broadly.

This book develops an evolutionary economics approach to welfare state dynamics. Welfare states are complex settings, including social insurance, social assistance, and universal provisions. Their main aim is to shelter household incomes from instability and redistribute incomes. This book analyses welfare states in terms of how they pool business cycle uncertainty between the state (social security), firms, and households. The evolutionary and institutional analysis of welfare states, focusing, in particular, on labor market segmentation and national-level policy design, is applied to two particular cases: a Southern European country (Portugal) and a deep-rooted European welfare state (France). These two countries have introduced similar social protection reforms and experienced similar crises, yet the two welfare states are very different. This book explores and explains why that should be the case. It will be of interest to researchers and students of institutional evolutionary economics, welfare states, and European politics.

The rise of digital commerce, smartphones and social media and now the tsunami of artificial intelligence have led to the digital transformation of organisations and everyday life, creating anxiety about privacy. Privacy becomes a matter of public concern, as organisational systems are compromised, data misappropriated and our personal choices commoditised. We are left with the vain hope privacy carries some meaning in a digitalised world. This book seeks to humanise the digital privacy debate, expose different pathways to considering digital privacy, try out a collection of critical lenses to see if anything strikes a chord and suggests new insights and a way forward.

This volume pursues a range of disciplines, metaphors and historical contexts to try to find different ways of thinking about digital privacy and expand the landscape we work in both theoretically and practically. It examines a range of technologies, including generative AI, blockchain and augmented reality. Privacy is treated as lived experience, something that requires a phenomenological orientation. Hence, this book offers a new definition of privacy. It proposes a different approach to digital privacy through the practice of virtuous privacy. It draws on a toolbox of theoretical lenses and counters the temptation to abstraction through metaphors.

This book will be useful for courses on digital transformation, digital ethics and digital privacy. It will appeal to privacy researchers in both management and computer science, as well as privacy consultants and data controllers in organisations.

This book offers a comprehensive and management-oriented analysis of sustainability in the aviation industry. It examines aviation's crucial role in global mobility and economic development whilst also critically addressing its environmental, social and regulatory challenges. Readers will benefit by gaining a realistic, analytically sound framework for evaluating sustainability strategies in aviation. The book supports informed decision-making, helps to anticipate regulatory and market developments, and enables readers to better balance economic performance with environmental responsibility and social acceptance in a highly complex and globally interconnected industry.

By adopting a holistic ESG perspective, the book integrates environmental impacts such as climate change and noise, social issues including equity, accessibility and labour conditions, and governance aspects like regulation, reporting and stakeholder accountability. Rather than presenting simplified solutions, it highlights trade-offs, uncertainties and long-term path dependencies that shape strategic decision-making in aviation. The structured approach combines conceptual foundations with industry-specific insights, covering regulation, technology, sustainability reporting and strategic management practices.

The book is relevant for all managers in the aviation industry, whether they work for airlines, airports, air traffic control organisations, regulatory authorities or political decision-makers. It is particularly important for environmental managers throughout the aviation industry, but also for managers at a senior level, as sustainability is becoming a strategic issue of growing importance. In addition, the book is valuable for students in aviation management programmes as well as for students in related fields such as aeronautical engineering and tourism management.

Taking an exhaustive look at the changing relationship between artists and business organisations, this book demonstrates how artists are no longer confined to the art market.

Recent developments in art, artistic work and management have fostered an unprecedented convergence between artists and companies. Artistic interventions are increasingly integrated into organisational settings. This book examines this evolution and seeks to demonstrate beyond common misconceptions what these initiatives can concretely bring to companies: strengthening brand image, teaching creative work methods and restoring a sense of pride through the rediscovery of aesthetics in everyday routines. Readers will first encounter a discussion of the sociology of art and management, providing a framework to explain the origins of artistic interventions in organisations. The text explores how practitioners and researchers have sought to understand these initiatives before delving into their real contributions, as well as the myths surrounding them. Grounded in the observation of nearly a dozen projects and approximately 80 interviews, this book offers a comprehensive perspective, enriched by multiple case studies that illustrate its arguments.

This book is designed for researchers, students, practitioners and those with an interest in the creative and cultural industries. It offers practical examples and field insights to cut through the myths and reveal the genuine value of collaborations between artists and companies.

This book contributes to the exploration of the concept of time in the social sciences and philosophy, by reflecting on the ontological presuppositions of medical science and what this means for the response to communicable infection. By examining infection as a process that resists segmentation, prediction, and control, the author exposes the ontological limits of linear divisible time as it is routinely mobilised by biomedicine and health governance to make life knowable and governable. Rather than abandoning time, it recognises it as a powerful technical device, one that has come to be treated as a mirror of reality rather than as an intervention that actively shapes what can be known, valued, and acted upon in the face of potentially lethal infection. The book will appeal to scholars in sociology, social theory, philosophy, and medical science interested in temporality, conceptions of power, and speculative thought.

This book by Paolo Spadoni and Jose Luis Perello Cabrera examines the history of tourism in Cuba and the expansion and struggles of international tourism in Cuba in the post-Cold War era.

The Cuban Tourism Industry: Evolution, Challenges, and Prospects begins with a historical review of the development of tourism as an important industry in pre-1959 Cuba and the subsequent decline in the first fifteen years of the revolution before a modest recovery in the second half of the 1970s and during the 1980s. Spadoni and Cabrera continue with a thorough analysis of the remarkable expansion of international tourism in Cuba in the post-Cold War era and in the era of improved relations with the United States that officially began in 2014, along with an assessment of the sector's economic impact and its main challenges. A critical assessment of the damaging effects on the Cuban tourism sector of stiffened U.S. sanctions imposed by the Trump administration, and largely maintained by the Biden administration, is also provided. This book examines tourism trends in Cuba and the Caribbean in the post-pandemic era and sheds additional light on Cuba's recent tourism performance to underscore key flaws of the Cuban tourism industry and suggest potential adjustments.

This book delves into the evolving dynamics of out-migration from Northeast India: a region historically associated with in-migration. It examines the shifting migration patterns, particularly the increasing trend of out-migration to Delhi and other parts of India, and the socio-economic implications for both migrants and their families left behind.

Focusing on the experiences of out-migrants from Northeast India, the book highlights their distinctive migration patterns characterised by predominant engagement in the service sector, setting them apart from the other migrants who are largely concentrated in construction and manual labour, challenging conventional narratives of migration. It explores the factors driving migration, the socio-economic characteristics of migrants, their employability, the increasing instances of discrimination, and the neighbourhoods they inhabit. Additionally, through its rich field-based studies, it presents a poignant analysis of the impact of migration on left behind family members, particularly elderly parents, offering an insightful perspective on the migration process.

This volume is a valuable resource for policymakers and scholars studying labour migration, urbanisation, and the socio-economic complexities of migration. It will particularly appeal to those interested in South Asian Studies, South Asian Economics, and the evolving patterns of migration in diverse socio-economic contexts.

This research methodology book advances the concept of 'Critical Realist Grounded Theory' (CRGT), building upon Glaser and Strauss' classic grounded theory whilst incorporating critical realism as its philosophical foundation. The approach reconceptualises original grounded theory methodology, enabling researchers to develop theories with causal explanations for observed phenomena.

The comprehensive guide addresses crucial methodological questions including literature review timing and maintaining grounded theory integrity throughout the research process. It draws on Glaser's position that grounded theory should remain open to multiple forms of data and provides systematic yet flexible coding approaches that facilitate theory generation. Whilst not exclusively designed for mixed methods researchers, CRGT specifically accommodates qualitative and quantitative data integration, addressing a significant gap in many grounded theory methodologies.

Through practical examples, the work guides readers through the stages of a complete research project, introduces updated terminology, and explains how original grounded theory terms have been adapted to incorporate critical realist philosophy. This essential resource targets mixed methods and qualitative researchers across social sciences, particularly in educational, sociological, psychological, and allied health fields.

The Emergence of Critical Realist Grounded Theory serves experienced researchers alongside master's degree students completing dissertation research and postgraduate research degree students in MPhil, MRes, PhD, and professional doctorate programmes, providing both the theoretical foundations and practical guidance for this innovative methodological approach.

This book provides an accessible introduction to critical disability studies, which helps students question existing notions of disability and interrogate how these have become embedded in our social and cultural understanding of disability.

This interdisciplinary text, authored by a team of leading critical disability scholars, defines and explains the core foundational concepts and models referred to in disability studies literature: the medical model, the tragedy model of disability, the social model, the cultural model, the human rights model, the affirmation model and critical disability studies. These seven particular models have been selected due to the centrality of their influence on people with disability, wider society and culture and the academic study of disability. These models provide students with new ways of understanding how disability interfaces with society and offer students from a variety of disciplines an important foundation for any further formal study in this area. This text is also co-designed with students studying models of disability, so the authors fully understand the issues students experience when learning about these models, and this text actively addresses how to overcome them.

This book will be an essential resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying critical disability studies from various disciplines including media and cultural studies, communication studies, disability studies and sociology.

Sharing insights from the author's forty years of activism, this book champions the right to food as a fundamental human right and offers a compelling exploration of its evolution and application.

Tracing the emergence of the human right to food within civil society and among legal experts in the early 1980s, this book highlights its pivotal role in advancing economic, social, and cultural rights that had long been neglected within the UN system. The book provides a careful definition of human rights as natural law, starting from human needs and States' obligations. It underscores the essential unity of human rights. Delving into key issues such as land rights, agrarian reform, and minimum income programmes, the book draws on global examples of oppression to illustrate the practical implementation of the right to food. It also examines the transnational dimensions of food justice, addressing the role of the Global North in perpetuating food insecurity in the Global South, and explores the role of human rights in regulating transnational corporations and holding International Governmental Organisations accountable. Furthermore, the book considers the legal implications of future generations' right to food and how this shapes present-day state obligations. With its conceptual clarity and actionable insights, this book serves as a vital resource for human rights education, advocacy, and policymaking.

This book is essential reading for activists, policymakers, students, and scholars across disciplines such as human rights, food and agriculture policy, social security, international relations, philosophy, and sustainability.

This book introduces an innovative, experiential and participatory approach to social work education and community transformation. Community Social Labs (CSL) is systematically presented as both an epistemological framework and methodology for co-creating locally grounded solutions to problems that confront communities in the global south.

With a focus on empirical experiences from Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania, this volume challenges readers to recognize communities as co-creators and owners of knowledge, whilst appreciating the role of universities as useful catalysts for societal change. As pedagogy, CSLs offer experiential and context-responsive learning, and they aim to democratize the curriculum to embed local knowledges. Stories directly from the field are used to demonstrate this, narrated first hand by students who participated in this innovative methodology. Thus, this collection offers a balanced and objective assessment of the potential of the approach, and the challenges that come with it.

Contributing new insights to the decolonization and indigenization of social work, this book will be a useful tool for scholars and students who wish to advance and challenge their knowledge and social work practice, as well as professionals and organizations in both government and civil society.

In 1960, 21-year-old Berta Zuther left her life in West Berlin behind to join African American missionary Andrew Foster in Ghana, thus embarking on a journey that would span three continents and result in the establishment of schools for the deaf across Africa. Berta and Andrew were both deaf themselves. They got married in Nigeria in 1961 and devoted their lives to building educational opportunities for deaf Africans - founding 32 schools, churches, and community centers in 13 African countries between 1957 and 2009.

This volume places Berta Foster at the center of interest, a woman who has remained largely invisible in existing accounts of her husband's pioneering educational mission. While Andrew Foster has been celebrated as an icon in Black and Deaf American history, Berta's crucial contributions as administrator and driving force not just behind their German support network have been overlooked. Drawing on private family archives, including hundreds of personal letters, and interviews with family members as well as former students and colleagues from deaf communities in Ghana and Nigeria, this book explores how deafness, gender, and race intersected in the lives of a Christian couple working across cultural boundaries during the Cold War era.

Deaf German Missionary Berta Foster (1939-2018) and Deaf Education in West Africa will be beneficial to students of Deaf History, Disability History, Diversity History, West African History, German History, American History.

This book is based around two key premises: all software is an artefact of human construct and all software shapes the behaviours of those who use it directly or experience its influence indirectly. With the rise of popular consumer-facing generative AI tools, never has understanding these two premises been more important or more obscured. This book explores the relationship between people and software as a relationship between a tool and its users.

Through a series of exemplar cases, it presents an examination of the historical development of software from a critical perspective, with special attention given to the consequences of using this software and assumptions made around its neutrality. The author explores the development of the World Wide Web, Word and Excel, and social media, concluding with an investigation of how the principles identified in these earlier examples are now being found within public interface generative AI tools. The book looks beyond the functionality and user interface of the software to look at it as a complex artefact of human manufacture by exploring the wider cultural and technical environment in which the software is created and considering the political, economic and social forces that come to bear on the software and become embodied within. This narrative approach provides readers with valuable insights into the influences of specific software on contemporary society and business, encouraging them to apply a critical lens to their own and their organisation's software use.

This book is a novel read for academics and students within software development, information systems, AI and critical management studies.

A shocking 90% of start-ups fail. Many of these failures are preventable, but you need to understand the causes and how to avoid them - both as an entrepreneur and an investor.

From technology to the market, from leadership to money, there are numerous reasons why your start-up will fail. Bernie Bulkin - who has been at both sides of the investment table - guides you through the six major reasons why start-ups fail, and how to avoid them.

Instead of accepting failure as inevitable, this book breaks down the main reasons why start-ups fail and how to turn them on their head. Whether you're a founder or an investor, if you're going to put in the time, money, and effort to ensure a company succeeds, you should go in with your eyes open. Bernie's common-sense approach offers the experience of a venture capitalist who has been there and done that.

Leadership at all levels makes a difference. Using real-life examples, and applying behavioural economics to venture decision-making, Why Start-Ups Fail spotlights what founders most often lack, and shares the who, how, and why of making a start-up succeed and avoiding the traps blocking your path to commercial success.

Political Economy of Power Sharing in Developing Countries is an in-depth examination of factors that trigger the clamor for power sharing, zoning and rotation in mostly developing countries. These provocations include geographical, ethnic, and religious identity factors that can influence the political process in varying degrees from country to country. The impact goes a long way in determining the stability and instability of the political process in various countries. The reasons for these differences and the impacts are a combination of the endogenous variables in the first instance, which are the primary prompters. Other elements, which are the exogenous factors, are secondary prompters. When these converge, they produce a peculiar impact in a given society based on the characteristic variables and the resulting outcome. The new paradigm shifts in the agitation in developing countries is demonstrated by an elitist instrument of marginalization and self-aggrandizement. The masses are hoodwinked, sensitized, and manipulated through primal sentiment to support the elites in acquiring political power, which in turn enables the acquisition of economic power.

How do we ensure that there is enough healthy and sustainable food to feed everyone in the world in the 21st century and beyond?

The future of food is in peril. Food production around the globe is both a contributor to and a victim of climate change, while population growth and shifting consumption patterns threaten to outpace supply. The Future of Food examines the current issues facing our food supply and considers the potential solutions to those challenges. Chapters in Part 1 explore the plethora of challenges facing the global food system and highlight the interconnectedness of these issues. Part 2 addresses the future of protein, one of the most important and hotly debated topics in food and environmental sciences. Readers will discover the many possible futures, from protein powders made from insects to burgers grown in a lab. Finally, Part 3 examines a variety of other low- and high-tech solutions, from vertical farming and regenerative agricultural practices to spoil-proof packaging, genetic modification, and the use of AI. The book presents a balanced and nuanced exploration of each possible solution, examining the strengths, drawbacks, and viability of each. Sidebars supplement the main text, offering illuminating real-world case studies that bring the text to life.

This book explains how "natural wine" was made and not discovered by Spanish lawmakers, chemists, merchants, and theologians, showing how Spain consolidated a legal construct that normalized specific technical interventions while preserving the label natural.

The book argues that wine labeled as "natural" was not the preservation of a traditional product but the product of a legal fiction that allowed wines with additives to be normalized and protected under law. In doing so, the book explores the emergence and changing meanings of natural wine. Rather than providing a fixed definition, it analyzes how the boundaries of "natural" shifted from period to period. It shows how natural wine ended up being used in the historical- legal sense that crystallized in late nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Spain and culminated in 1932. Through detailed archival research, the book explores debates around adulteration, chemistry, purity, and authenticity, using historical food studies and legal analysis as its framework. It introduces the Spanish case as a significant but overlooked moment in the broader European shift toward legally codified standards of food authenticity and quality. Drawing primarily on the work of Alessandro Stanziani and influenced by Bruno Latour's perspective on scientific authority and socio-technical networks, the book bridges the fields of legal history, enology, and cultural politics. This historical analysis sheds light on contemporary controversies surrounding wine regulation, appellation systems, and the global natural wine movement.

The book will be of great interest to students and scholars of food and wine studies, legal and economic history, anthropology, science and technology studies, and European agrarian history.

How can a country industrialise without causing environmental damage? How do development professionals ensure they act in the interests of recipients, rather than their own donor country? And how is the humanitarian project of development complicated by ideological objectives?

The fourth edition of this renowned textbook covers the most urgent issues facing the field of development. With the return of Russia as a global actor, renewed conflict in the Middle East, and global inequality exacerbated by climate change and global health crises, the questions underpinning international development are increasingly fraught. For most of its history, international development was shaped by Cold War competition; at the turn of the twenty-first century, the paradigm shifted as China assumed a greater role, and post-9/11 US development initiatives were intended to reduce militancy in the Middle East. As these tensions return to the world stage, it is ever more important for students to ask what development is - or should be - and what it can achieve. With increased attention to gender and postcolonial perspectives and strong coverage of security, economics and global order, this book is essential reading for students of international development.

Decolonizing English Language Education offers a grounded introduction to decolonial practices in language learning. It invites readers to problematize and rethink English language education by uncovering its deep ties to colonial history and imagining new, more humanizing possibilities for the contemporary classroom.

Spanning histories of empire to present-day policies and practices, this book traces how English has been commonly associated with power, opportunity, and mobility while also perpetuating inequality and marginalization. Molina guides teachers through a reflective and methodical journey: first, understanding how colonial legacies shape language education; then, moving toward decolonizing one's own consciousness; and, ultimately, adopting practical strategies for a transformative pedagogy rooted in critical, decolonial love. Drawing on the author's own experience and insights from Indigenous knowledge systems and critical traditions, this book emphasizes the importance of love, spirituality, and relationality in language teacher education. Case studies and hands-on examples highlight how teachers can use translingual, multimodal, and culturally sustaining practices to affirm learners' diverse identities and gifts. This book effectively re-imagines language teaching not just as skills-based instruction but as a moral and transformative endeavor.

By incorporating decolonial practice and reflection into research, this book is ideal for policymakers, scholars, and teachers alike. It is a valuable resource for applied linguistics, language acquisition, second language acquisition theory and methodology, and practical courses offering work placements.

With the launch of Agenda 2030, public-private partnerships (PPPs) were heralded as an important means of realising the UN Sustainable Development Goals and providing more sustainable development financing in the global south.

This book explores PPPs from the bottom up, drawing on extensive empirical research in Ethiopia to illuminate the diversity of practices, arrangements and contradictions that the PPP agenda enables, generates and occludes. Despite the omnipresence of PPP talk among governments and international organisations, donor and recipient agencies, and private actors, there exists no universally agreed definition of PPPs, and in practice they encompass a remarkable diversity of activities and arrangements. This book thoroughly examines PPPs in Ethiopia, considering what actors they bring together, what power dynamics they produce, how the dynamics alter them, what PPPs and such dynamics say about changing state-society relations and how the individual Ps of PPPs get infused with context-specific meaning. By investigating how PPPs play out in practice, the book sheds new light on how this ambiguous but proliferating discourse is changing the meanings, processes and mechanisms of international development.

This book illuminates the unseen consequences of translating bold sustainable development goals into practice and will be of interest to researchers and practitioners of international development.
