This book tells the story of the humanitarian industry's latest failed attempt at reform, identifies the key contradiction at the heart of it, and suggests ways to do things better.

In 2016, the United Nations, international organizations and heads of state launched the Grand Bargain - "A Shared Commitment to Better Serve People in Need" - thereby announcing a systemwide reform. Key among the commitments was localization: placing local organizations at the centre of emergency responses. However, today, very little has changed, with most attributing the lack of progress to technical issues, such as donor requirements, contracting mechanisms, and local responders' capacities.

However, this book argues that a paradox within the localization agenda is to blame. Drawing from in-depth research with diverse aid organizations, however, Marie-Claude Savard argues that the real problem is that the humanitarian industry is a territory upon which knowledge - the currency of technocratic regimes - is produced and guarded by power-wielding gatekeepers, who determine what constitutes a legitimate emergency responder. Those gatekeepers mandate international NGOs and standard-setting organizations to shepherd nonconforming local organizations towards their standards. This process only reaffirms enduring North-South hierarchies. Ultimately, the reformative potential of the localization agenda is thwarted by its own, internal contradictions-but there are ways of doing things differently by aiming for a true polycentrism that could lead to more sustainable, enduring change.

Healthcare is a complex industry that requires efficiency, safety, and quality of care. Hospitals utilize structured problem-solving methodologies like the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle and A3 thinking to achieve these goals. However, many healthcare professionals lack formal training in these methods.

Healthcare Kaizen in Action: 30 Case Studies for Rapid Improvement presents 30 real-life examples of Rapid Improvement Events (RIEs) in various healthcare settings. This book introduces the core principles of the PDSA cycle and A3 thinking and provides a detailed two-week timeline for implementing an RIE in a healthcare environment. Included are 30 collaboration briefs that detail specific improvement initiatives, such as reducing emergency department wait times, optimizing surgical scheduling, improving medication administration processes, and enhancing inventory management practices. Each brief follows a structured format, enabling readers to readily understand the case studies and apply the insights to their organizations. The case studies are organized by problem type, making it easy for readers to find solutions relevant to their challenges and identify actionable strategies to improve healthcare operations.

This book provides knowledge and tools for healthcare professionals to drive meaningful changes in their organizations, promoting continuous improvement and reducing inefficiencies. It is concise and actionable, aiming to improve patient outcomes and healthcare systems for nurses, physicians, hospital administrators, and process improvement specialists.

'Responsible AI isn't just a technical challenge - it's a leadership imperative. This book offers essential guidance for anyone navigating the promise of deploying AI at scale. Read this book to understand how.' Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn and bestselling author of Superagency: What Could Possibly Go Right with Our AI Future

'Grounded, up-to-date, thorough, actionable - you could read this book, or you could pay consultants gazillions of dollars to tell you something less useful.' Stuart Russell OBE, Professor of Computer Science, University of California, Berkeley

Governing the Machine is the essential guide to harnessing the transformative potential of AI, while navigating and mitigating its inherent risks.

Despite AI's power to innovate daily life and revolutionize organizations, public trust in AI is low. For companies to take full advantage of AI, it is vital that they adopt and communicate a responsible approach in order to build consumer, employee and investor confidence.

Governing the Machine provides business leaders with a practical and flexible framework for building comprehensive and robust AI governance. It empowers organizations to reap the benefits, while ensuring that AI is trustworthy, sustainable and a source of opportunity and profit rather than liability and harm.

Drawing on their vast experience advising leading global companies, the authors demystify:
? The process of defining AI principles and policies
? Recognizing and assessing risks
? Approaches for developing safeguards
? Selecting the right technical tools and training
? Evolving global AI regulations, laws and policies, including the EU AI Act and those in the US, UK and other key regions

Whether you're just beginning your AI journey or assessing your organization's approach, this book is your essential guide to seizing the opportunity - and avoiding the pitfalls - of AI systems.

This book examines modern American farmland preservation, arguing that its policies must address the social, identity, and psychological issues facing American farmers.

As American farmland is disappearing rapidly, this crisis not only jeopardizes American agriculture but also threatens rural communities. While the American farmland preservation movement has focused on conservation easements, permanent land restrictions that work within the American legal system's preference for inalienable property rights, the author argues for a new era of farmland preservation based on stakeholder-led solutions. The book showcases how rapid development is escalating farmland loss in urbanizing parts of the country, meaning the problem facing much of rural America is the loss of farmers and farm communities, not farmland. Drawing on the author's career as a farmland preservation specialist, the book evaluates America's current farmland preservation policies framed through the "politics of place," a term describing the role of place in local politics and civic engagement. Utilizing interviews with farmland preservationists, the book highlights a broader, more holistic approach to farmland preservation than mere land protection. By featuring these prominent examples from around the country, the book puts forward a new vision for farmland preservation that more insightfully addresses the social and economic issues facing America's farming communities and fosters a more engaged rural citizenship.

This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of food and agriculture, rural sociology, and environmental management, as well as professionals working in farmland management, conservation, and preservation.

The book covers a broad thematic landscape: from the evolution and taxonomy of AI, to its uses in disinformation studies, academic integrity, and specialized professional training. It includes empirical insights from focus groups and classroom research, detailed analyses of LLM-driven risks such as hallucinations, bias, and erosion of critical thinking, as well as practical applications like AI-enhanced tutoring and dataset governance. Combining theoretical perspectives with real-world examples, the monograph illuminates how AI tools are deployed, perceived, and negotiated in universities, research institutions, and digital public spheres.

A practical handbook examining how established businesses can use their unique advantages to fight back and win in a digital arena too often dominated by tech start-ups, disruptors and unicorns.

The big tech companies (Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft) have had an enormous impact on our everyday lives. A new wave of start-ups in the tech sector has dominated the press and swallowed up huge amounts of investment. But what about those established companies in the traditional parts of the world's economies, from energy, industrial and consumer goods to travel and health? They rarely got a mention. Everyone was talking about the disrupters - the start-ups and the entrepreneurs - and not about the incumbents. This book is a call for a reality check.

For at the core of our established companies are capabilities and qualities that remain highly relevant in the digital age. They are often market leaders for very good reasons - they know their customers and markets well, and they have great product, sales and marketing expertise. They are operationally savvy and financially strong, with deep insights into areas of expertise that no one else has, giving them a unique advantage.

John Fallon and Julian Birkinshaw have come to a clear conclusion: incumbents are not going quietly into that dark night. Organizations will need to jettison their analogue baggage and infrastructure and embrace digital transformation. They will survive and they will prosper. And this shows how they are doing it.

This edited volume brings together a remarkable array of distinguished corporate, investor, government, academic, and nonprofit perspectives to consider how the targeted pursuit of business profits can better add up to the world's profit, broadly defined.

Chapter authors tackle such questions as how businesses can work more effectively with governments, financial institutions, and civil society to mitigate their own enterprise risk alongside risks to people and planet; how private resources, innovation, and networks can be mobilized to create value in solving major social and environmental challenges; and what types of accountability structures are needed to set boundaries, provide oversight, and create positive incentives for business performance. Their perspectives offer insights into how sustainability can be introduced into business practices, finance, and policymaking in a way that expands market opportunities and accelerates progress towards global sustainable development.

This book examines the legal and ethical issues that can result when employees express opinions that conflict with those of their employer. It covers seven areas of employment - corporate; government (local, state, and federal); military; law enforcement; K-12 education; college professors and administrators; and sports - to look at case precedent and interrogate how technology has complicated this area of the law and employee-employer relations. Randy Bobbitt argues that, while free speech in the workplace has always been considered controversial, the phenomena of social media has coincided with a sharp increase in cases over the past decade, as disgruntled employees take to online forums to criticize their employers or express controversial opinions. By exploring these cases in both the private and public sectors, Bobbitt also highlights the difference in legal obligation to the protection of free speech between the two and demonstrates how employers in both sectors deviate from these obligations in certain cases. Scholars of communication, media law, labor law, US policy, history, and the first amendment will find this book of particular interest.

This book explores how adoption evolved in Germany's turbulent twentieth century, experiencing both drastic changes and unexpected continuities.

The history of adoption in twentieth-century Germany has been dramatic and complex. The Weimar Republic's assumption of responsibility for children's welfare in 1922 empowered state authorities to regulate private adoption agencies, to set up their own public adoption offices, and to require prospective adoptive parents to prove their competence to social workers. These policies subsequently allowed nazis, communists, and democrats to frame adoption policies to match their social and political goals and values. Differing conceptions of the best interests of the child and the family, redefinitions of "family", changing criteria for a family's or child's suitability for adoption, abduction, international adoption, and even European integration all came into play, empowering authorities to define, regulate and sometimes even forbid adoptive relationships to that end. The evolution of German adoption and German society reflected each other, showing both fundamental changes and unexpected continuities, and deepening our understanding of both.

In Latin America, and other historically exploited former colonies, people were told to unlearn their language and culture in order to acquire what some privileged voices classify as "valid" or "legitimate" ways of thinking.
Throughout history, various teaching approaches and methodologies have emerged, each bringing unique insights to foreign language classrooms all over the world. These methods have played a pivotal role in shaping language pedagogy, enhancing learners' experiences, and fostering communication in an increasingly interconnected world. As societies become aware of the need for cultural inclusivity and equity, educators are recognizing the importance of adopting praxiologies that honor diverse languages and perspectives.
In the last couple of years, language educators have seen an unprecedented expansion of discussions related to the questioning of naturalized practices in language education. Nowadays, these questions are the core of language teacher education programs in Latin America. Educators have developed and implemented another way experiencing and assessing language education; one that is not focused on the mere application of predetermined methods and techniques, but that is born from-and sensitive to-the local contexts, and which considers context-dependent struggles, hopes, needs, and agency (or lack thereof). In such a manner, the concept of praxiologies seems to be central, as understood by Paulo Freire as the inseparable connection between action and reflection. In the context of Latin American language education, praxiologies refer to the constant action-reflection that extends beyond the implementation of pre-determined methods and techniques created by those who have never interacted with the local contexts.

This book delves into the evolving dynamics of out-migration from Northeast India: a region historically associated with in-migration. It examines the shifting migration patterns, particularly the increasing trend of out-migration to Delhi and other parts of India, and the socio-economic implications for both migrants and their families left behind.

Focusing on the experiences of out-migrants from Northeast India, the book highlights their distinctive migration patterns characterised by predominant engagement in the service sector, setting them apart from the other migrants who are largely concentrated in construction and manual labour, challenging conventional narratives of migration. It explores the factors driving migration, the socio-economic characteristics of migrants, their employability, the increasing instances of discrimination, and the neighbourhoods they inhabit. Additionally, through its rich field-based studies, it presents a poignant analysis of the impact of migration on left behind family members, particularly elderly parents, offering an insightful perspective on the migration process.

This volume is a valuable resource for policymakers and scholars studying labour migration, urbanisation, and the socio-economic complexities of migration. It will particularly appeal to those interested in South Asian Studies, South Asian Economics, and the evolving patterns of migration in diverse socio-economic contexts.

Now in its fifth edition, Exploring Medical Anthropology provides a concise and engaging introduction to medical anthropology. It presents competing theoretical perspectives in a balanced fashion, highlighting points of conflict and convergence. Concrete examples and the authors' personal research experiences are utilized to explain some of the discipline's most important insights, such as the idea that biology and culture matter equally in the human experience of illness and disease and that medical anthropology can help alleviate human suffering.

This text has been thoroughly updated for the fifth edition, including new material on intersectionality, reproductive health, and public health (including Covid-19); additional material on theory and methods, including rapid ethnographic assessment; and additional ethnographic case examples and anthropological scholarship.

It contains a range of pedagogical features to support teaching and learning, including images, text boxes, a glossary, and suggested further reading.

Information Horizons is the updated, definitive resource for the Information Horizon Theory and the Information Horizon Interview method. Embracing behavioral, cognitive, and social aspects of information, the theory and method have been applied globally in information behavior research and education.

The theory posits that information behavior is social, material, temporal, dynamic, situational, and contextual, and that information behavior can be conceptualized as Information Horizons, which include affordances and constraints on information behavior. It provides the foundation for the Information Horizon Interview method that combines semi-structured interview questions with a graphical elicitation technique in which the participant draws a visualization, or map, of their Information Horizon, which illustrates their information seeking behavior in specific situations and contexts. This volume incorporates recent developments in scholarship, technology, and methodology, updating the theory and method and providing new insights and guidance for their use in research and teaching. An expert in context citation analysis shows how the theory and method have been incorporated in research since its inception. Case studies authored by renowned scholars present personal reflections on their experiences conducting Information Horizon Interviews with different populations, with a level of detail not possible within a standard research report. Extensive teaching and learning examples, with a focus on hands-on exercises, demonstrate how the theory and method are used to teach information behavior concepts. Essays by students recount their experiences learning about the Information Horizon Theory and conducting Information Horizon Interviews. The book concludes with two detailed Information Horizon Interview guides for different study populations.

Information Horizons will be of interest to researchers, educators, students, and practitioners worldwide interested in researching and teaching information behavior.

Building Adaptive Organisations is a practical guide to thriving in an era of volatility, complexity, and rapid technological change. The book argues that the 300-year-old organisational model, designed for stability and control, is no longer fit for the demands of Industry 4.0 and the changing workplace. The outdated pyramidal enterprise has bred disengaged workforces, out-of-touch leaders, and cultures that collapse under constant disruption.

The book presents a compelling alternative that transforms organisations into self-organising, emergent ecosystems. Drawing on industrial-revolution history, organisational theory, original models, and case studies, it demonstrates how to ingrain adaptability into the heart of systems and culture. Building Adaptive Organisations argues that enduring adaptability will never come from top-down leadership, isolated agile initiatives, complicated nested circles, mindset shifts, or cultural makeovers. Instead, the study focuses on five critical system levers that drive adaptability: culture, design, technology, people, and process. It provides practical guidance on how to build an adaptive culture across the organisation's architecture; designing modular structures with self-organising governance and flexible workflows; integrating digital transformation into the organisation's core operations; enabling people strategies that support adaptive workforces; and implementing transformational change as a shared, emergent, enterprise-wide endeavour.

Offering clear concepts, tools, and pathways, this book equips system leaders and organisational designers to build adaptive, responsive organisations capable of navigating the turbulence of Industry 4.0 and an increasingly unpredictable world.
