Russian Subject, Muslim Monarch focuses on how, within the emirate of Bukhara, sovereignty was shaped as much by paperwork and quotidian entanglements as by conquest and diplomacy.
By uncovering the paper trail generated by the complex correspondence between Bukhara and Russia, James Pickett reveals figures and voices often missing from other sources. Unlike sanitized court chronicles, the Bukharan chancery records preserve experiences of women navigating patriarchal legal systems, religious minorities seeking state protection, and ordinary subjects petitioning for justice. Pickett provides an unprecedented window into semicolonialism's lived experience, even as many informal systems remained operative during revolution and civil war, after the Russian Empire had ceased to exist.
The emirate of Bukhara represented the apogee of Perso-Islamic society and government at its twilight and as an edge case of colonialism, equally revealing of both phenomena. Bukhara distinguished itself within the Russian Empire through steadfast loyalty, fitting seamlessly into imperial structures bearing many parallels to those already embedded in Central Asia. Russian Subject, Muslim Monarch makes this unique paper trail speak to larger questions about the nature of power and the modern state.

A thoughtful and provocative meditation on both the potential and limits of constitutionalism.
In the early twenty-first century, constitutionalism confronts numerous pressures and critiques. Some prominent critics are concerned that constitutionalism's modern form, in which high courts play a large role, limits popular self-governance. By committing their nations to detailed social and economic policies-from neoliberal requirements for balanced budgets to constitutionalized social welfare and environmental rights-many modern constitutions might make promises they cannot keep and be unduly rigid in the face of changing social, economic, and environmental conditions. Meanwhile, the rise of proto-authoritarian elected leaders around the world shows that constitutions are vulnerable to, and may even enable, democratic backsliding.
Mark Tushnet and Bojan Bugaric argue that addressing each of these serious concerns through constitutional design and innovation is potentially valuable, but paradoxically, every remedy also carries with it the possibility that it will intensify the very conditions it seeks to ameliorate. Instead, Tushnet and Bugaric propose a "thin" idea of constitutionalism and suggest that we should scale back our expectations for what constitutionalism can achieve. Political mobilization, led by people attuned to the economic and cultural causes of democratic backsliding, is a better bet.

This volume is the first to assemble a wide-ranging body of research on the history of a certain pattern of theorizing about cognizing as a kind of being, or even being itself. As such, it addresses a notable silence in contemporary scholarship about the mind, and even about the history of philosophy of mind, which stands in contrast with its appearances throughout the historical tradition of philosophy. This book therefore enhances with historical richness the growing interest in related concepts such as idealism and pansychism. The original research presented in the book advances our understanding of the philosophical richness of various concepts of "cognizing as being" and draws on both Western and non-Western philosophical traditions. In doing so the books fosters a dialogue among these interconnected philosophical traditions that includes Indian philosophy, Aristotelian and Neoplatonic traditions, medieval Latin and Islamic traditions, Renaissance and early modern Platonism, varieties of early modern panpsychism or pannoeticism, German idealism, and early phenomenology. By bringing these together these collected works provide an illustrative model that will help scholars "see" a long-overlooked insight about mind across various historical traditions, and spark new ideas about how this approach might manifest in unexpected places. This volume is of interest to scholars working in the history of philosophy, the philosophy of mind and ancient philosophy.

In this celebration of chapters, New Perspectives on African Business covers terrain across Africa that has rarely been examined, particularly outside familiar settings, in a way that is both insightful and engaging, answering the mystery around how business is conducted across the continent and the associated challenges.
In this highly curated collection, scholars Harrison and Omeihe connect theory to context and draw on diverse perspectives to deepen understanding by bringing together research from leading African scholars. Drawing from insights across key disciplines, the authors examine themes such as entrepreneurship, leadership in cultural contexts, economic development, and less explored areas including tourism, CSR, and SMEs through the lens of specific countries across the continent.
This volume is of benefit to both undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as advanced scholars, opening avenues for future contributions by pointing to areas where further research is needed to develop the field.
The New Frontiers in African Business and Society book series is dedicated to the exploration of theoretical and conceptual discussions that consolidate conventional knowledge about Africa. The purpose of the series is to invite new reflections on the nature of business and society across parts of Africa. The series contributes by interrogating the socially constructed practices, assumptions and beliefs which provide meaning for scholarship across Africa.

An indispensable introduction to legal reasoning, updated for today's political and legal environment.
Since it was first published nearly five decades ago, Reason in Law has become the starting point for understanding legal reasoning, a critical component of the rule of law. The editors show how judges can integrate all the elements of a case to persuasively explain their rulings-and, even more importantly, why they sometimes fail to do so. Drawing on cases old and new, Reason in Law enables readers to become sophisticated "judges of judging."
Now in its tenth edition, Reason in Law includes a new chapter on the increasingly contentious and politically consequential field of administrative law and addresses recent developments in the American legal landscape, including growing conservatism in the federal judiciary and the flood of lawsuits brought against the second Trump administration. It also analyzes new cases on the First Amendment rights of high schoolers, transgender civil rights, the responsibilities universities have for student safety, Donald Trump's sweeping claims of executive power, and historic Supreme Court decisions expanding the rights of gun owners and allowing states to criminalize abortion. As always, Reason in Law connects legal theory with empirical research on the American judicial system, showing how trustworthy legal reasoning helps preserve social peace and the rule of law.

This book reveals how Nextgen AI systems are revolutionizing the way businesses create value in what the authors call the Co-Intelligence revolution. Gone are the days of simply making and selling products or services. Now, humans and these AI systems combine to produce and use tokens of intelligence to craft interactive experiences, shifting value creation from mere transactions to dynamic, co-intelligent engagements.
The authors introduce a groundbreaking paradigm of co-creatively generated intelligence (COIN): relational intelligence emerging between humans, machines, institutions, and ecosystems, where co-intelligent organizational ecosystems optimize decision-making, personalize experiences, and drive new forms of agility.
Packed with case studies, including OpenAI, L'Oreal, SAP, Siemens, JPMorgan Chase, Tesla, and emerging digital public infrastructures, this book details how COIN is transforming enterprises in innovative ways. It outlines how businesses can leverage Nextgen AI to enhance operations, offerings, and customer experiences while making a positive impact on the environment. This work will captivate scholars and practitioners alike, offering pathways to co-create a symbiotic, sustainable future.

This book focuses on sovereign states of the Global South, offering a systematic analysis of how these countries design voting rules within regional international organizations. It introduces the concept of travel restriction measures and examines them in conjunction with the national and social interests of Global South countries, with the aim of identifying pathways toward mutually beneficial cooperation within a shared community of interests.
The book also places strong emphasis on collaborative approaches to cultural heritage protection among Global South countries, interpreting the legal and institutional mechanisms that support cross-border cooperation in this field. In light of the persistent tension between environmental protection and economic growth faced by many Global South countries, the book further foregrounds sustainable development as a central theme. Several chapters examine key environmental governance issues-including climate change, environmental provisions in free trade agreements, and marine plastic pollution-from the perspective of Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), engaging critically with questions of environmental justice in the governance of global environmental threats.
Characterized by policy analysis, professional interpretation of legal provisions, and a case-oriented research approach, this book aims both to popularize policy and legal theory for broader audiences and to provide valuable reference material for scholars and policymakers in Global South countries. Overall, it addresses the challenges confronting Global South states in an era marked by rapid technological advancement, intensifying environmental risks, and growing demands for sustainable development.

This book provides a foundational study of bell hooks's groundbreaking theory of the oppositional gaze, which is first introduced in her book, Black Looks (1992), by placing the oppositional gaze on Marxist footing for the first time. While situating hooks's oppositional gaze within an intellectual tradition of the contemporary gaze emerging with French philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jacques Lacan, and Michel Foucault, The Marxist Foundations of the Oppositional Gaze intervenes in the dominant accounts of the gaze, as it appears in and proliferates Western thinking, which largely overlook racialized, gendered, and classed dynamics.
This book also foregrounds hooks's oppositional gaze as an intersectional concept attuned to hooks's conceptualization of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy. Through this foregrounding, Woodson allows the oppositional gaze to traverse cultural studies, black feminism, black studies, queer studies, and literary studies, putting the concept in conversation with how thinkers and scholars such as Jacques Derrida, Jose Esteban Munoz, Toni Morrison, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Cedric Robinson have all theorized looking, subjectivity, and power. In effect, this book repurposes hooks's Marxist theorization of the oppositional gaze as that which expands, retools, complicates, and transforms looking relations into a site of resistance and counter-agency, intent on questioning the capitalist moment.

This book explores the complexities arising at the intersection of international law, state sovereignty, and global commerce. The core focus is on how international arbitration can be employed to resolve disputes stemming from the national security screening of foreign direct investment (FDI). The flow of FDI has been integral to global economic development, yet it has increasingly attracted scrutiny from national governments. This scrutiny has intensified due to geopolitical tensions and concerns over the control of critical infrastructure and sensitive technologies. As states aim to balance the economic benefits of FDI with the need to protect national security, conflicts between state actions and international investment agreements have grown more complex. International arbitration, particularly through investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), represents a crucial forum for resolving these disputes.
The book addresses the challenge of upholding international treaties while respecting the legitimate security concerns of states. It provides a detailed examination of how ISDS mechanisms can address these disputes, the legal principles involved, and the broader implications for international law and global investment governance. The study contributes to the ongoing discourse on harmonizing national security needs with the standards of protection promised under international investment law. It critically analyzes the role of arbitration in resolving conflicts arising from national security screenings, offering insights into how arbitral tribunals balance state sovereignty with investor protection. Additionally, it explores potential improvements to the arbitration process to enhance its fairness and efficiency in handling these high-stakes disputes.

This open access book makes an important and original contribution in shifting the analytical lens from 'empires' to the agency of 'resilient states'. Employing a comparative framework, which highlights strategies such as diplomacy, selective modernization, and national identity, the book provides a novel and accessible way to understand how certain states maintained sovereignty. Few countries have remained independent over the last 600 years. While many books have sought to understand why and how expansionist efforts occurred, none has turned that question around, seeking answers to why and how some nations remained independent. This book brings several (but not all) of these countries together, in one collection, capturing other histories. It presents chapters on eight countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Ethiopia, Iran, Japan, Mongolia, Nepal, and Thailand, from 1400 to the present, and collates their historical trajectories in independence, outlining key commonalities, and differences. It is relevant to scholars in political science, development studies, decolonial and post-colonial studies, history, and international relations.

Since the advent of widespread, user-friendly artificial intelligence, the pre-AI era of technology driven innovation appears one of relative stability. Old models have been swept away as innovations in every field have become commonplace. Business and other organisations that are unable to develop innovations, or cannot quickly absorb and adapt to new innovations, will be crushed by the global competitive forces. This book works outwards from the idea that innovation leads to continuous and discontinuous changes at all levels and in all areas of business and society. In this context, incremental innovations lead to minor economic crises, while radical and revolutionary innovations lead to major economic crises.
There are no unaffected areas, and the crises will occur at all levels. This book assesses where the new innovations will most likely appear and how to prepare against future AI-generated crises. It will be of interest to scholars and students of technology and innovation strategic management, AI policy and business ethics, as well as policymakers and practitioners involved in the implementation of AI strategy.

Rigorous, careful, and nonpartisan research with a high policy impact on environmental and energy economics.
Environmental and Energy Policy and the Economy focuses on the effective and efficient management of environmental and energy challenges. Research papers offer new evidence on the intended and unintended consequences, the market and nonmarket effects, and the incentive and distributional impacts of policy initiatives and market developments.
This volume presents six new papers on environmental and energy economics and policy. Judson Boomhower and Meredith Fowlie illustrate the distributional consequences of improving risk pricing efficiency in wildfire insurance markets. Claire Brunel and Arik Levinson develop a conceptual framework for understanding the economic and environmental consequences of taxes on imports of goods based on their carbon content. Karen Clay, Danae Hernandez-Cortes, Akshaya Jha, Joshua Lewis, Noah Miller, and Edson Severnini study the long-run distributional implications of US power plant sitings over more than a century. Todd Gerarden, Mar Reguant, and Daniel Xu provide a comprehensive overview of industrial policy in the renewable energy sector, with comparisons across the US, EU, and China. Jamie Hansen-Lewis and Michelle Marcus show how failure to account for behavioral responses can affect policy predictions regarding maritime emissions. Finally, Richard Sweeney and Joseph Wilske estimate the externalities associated with correlated intermittency in electricity generation from US wind power investments.

This book brings together leading African philosophers to revisit one of the most enduring questions in feminist discourse in Africa: were women in traditional African societies marginalized, or were gender roles historically organized through complementary, mutually sustaining responsibilities? Drawing on historical analysis, decolonial theory, and close philosophical argumentation, the contributors trace how colonial and missionary interventions reshaped gender relations and introduced new hierarchies that continue to reverberate today. The volume re-examines widely held assumptions about patriarchy, interrogates contested interpretations of African cultural practices, and highlights the diversity of women's experiences across different regions and eras. Rather than rehearsing polarized narratives, the book offers a thoughtful reinterpretation of African gender relations-one that foregrounds contextual nuance, cultural continuity, and the complex interplay between indigenous worldviews and external impositions.

This book is a guide to help psychotherapists, counsellors, and other mental health practitioners navigate the ethical dilemmas and challenges inherent to Islamic psychotherapy. In recent decades, the therapeutic application of Islamic psychotherapy has gained remarkable momentum. This approach integrates religion and spirituality into mental health practices, offering profound insights and benefits for clients. However, the incorporation of spirituality and religion into psychotherapy also raises a range of ethical dilemmas and challenges that remain insufficiently addressed in the literature. This book seeks to address this critical gap by providing a comprehensive resource that offers both theoretical foundations and practical strategies for identifying, understanding, and resolving ethical dilemmas when working with Muslim clients.
Grounded in the ethical principles of Islam, it draws upon Qur'anic teachings, hadith, and Islamic jurisprudence while incorporating insights from contemporary ethical practices in psychology and psychotherapy. Additionally, the book emphasizes the importance of cultural competence, presenting case studies, practical examples, and best practices tailored to the unique needs of Muslim clients. Grounded in Islamic principles, this work aspires to bridge the gap between mainstream ethical frameworks and culturally sensitive, Islamically-informed practices in psychotherapy.
Through its comprehensive exploration of these challenges, Ethical Dilemmas in Islamic Psychotherapy: Balancing Faith, Culture, and Professional Ethics not only fills a critical gap in the literature but also contributes to the broader discourse on the integration of religion and spirituality in mental health care. By doing so, it empowers practitioners to deliver ethical, effective, and competent care to Muslim clients, fostering greater trust and healing within the therapeutic relationship.

This book aims to provide insights into the field of ICT-related teacher professional development, making valuable theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions to the research within educational settings in developing countries like Vietnam. Over the years, technology has been an irreversible force driving educational transformation. Teachers' digital competence is increasingly essential for the effective integration of educational technology across curricula and plays an important role in ensuring quality assurance. English language teachers worldwide face similar challenges in upskilling and reskilling due to the fast development of information technology. In response to these global and local demands, governments from different continents (e.g. Asia, Europe or Africa, etc.) have been investing in educational technology as a pathway to sustainable social development.
In-service digital mediated training is essential for teachers' upskilling and reskilling, requiring a context dependent framework for ICT-related professional development. Although numerous studies address the theme of educational technology, this book stands out as the first to establish a framework grounded in general theory of pedagogy, andragogy and a comprehensive need analysis. The empirical triangulation research with data collected from the surveys, interviews and meta-document analysis was employed in this study. This book provides practical guidelines and recommendations for policy makers, educators, curriculum designers and academic scholars. This open access book takes readers inside the minds and hearts of twenty urban visionaries transforming urban and rural environments across six continents. Rather than focusing on technical solutions or policy frameworks, Cathy Oke and Jorn Verbeeck reveal the deeply personal journeys of former mayors, Indigenous leaders, CEOs, entrepreneurs, activists and academics who have used cities and towns as living laboratories for humanity's future. From Durban to Paris, Melbourne to Bangalore, these boundary spanners share intimate stories of what drives their work: childhood memories of fishing with grandparents, moments of recognition on Arctic mountains, encounters with traditional knowledge systems that challenge Western assumptions about development. Rather than celebrating lone heroes, the book reveals cities and their communities as "kaleidoscopes of possibility" requiring ensemble casts who translate between disciplines, sectors, and communities.
Each story weaves personal odyssey with professional transformation, capturing how individual experiences of displacement, discovery, and belonging shape approaches to collective challenges like climate change, inequality, and urban resilience. This is a syllabus for sustainable city leadership: accumulated wisdom that integrates multiple knowledge systems, honours ancient wisdom alongside contemporary innovation, and fosters collaborative intelligence through the stories we share. Essential reading for anyone navigating the messy, vital work of making cities thrive.

A detailed commentary with a new translation that integrates intertextual, theological, literary, and historical perspectives
This historical and literary commentary on the Qur'an's first two surahs provides a structural analysis of the two texts, advances a novel theory of Surah 2's intricate redactional history, contextualizes the Qur'an among writings from the Biblical tradition, and considers a variety of other textual, linguistic, and theological issues. It offers the first comprehensive historical and literary commentary in English on Surah 2, the longest and most complex Qur'anic text. Both surahs have been newly translated by the author.
Surahs 1 (Surat al-Fati?ah, "The Opening") and 2 (Surat al-Baqarah, "The Cow") discuss such important theological notions as divine testing and divine foreknowledge; offer narratives about Adam, Abraham, Saul, and other figures; include polemics against Jews and Christians; and issue legislative commandments, with an emphasis on those relating to marriage and divorce. Building on his previous work, Key Terms of the Qur'an, Nicolai Sinai begins each surah commentary with an introductory overview, and then proceeds to a verse-by-verse exegesis. He pays particular attention to inner-Qur'anic parallels and doublets and to the resulting questions of textual chronology. Sinai's commentaries make selective use of interpretive resources found in premodern Islamic Qur'an scholarship. Short summaries follow the detailed exegetical treatment of each surah.
The Qur'an, like the Bible, is a sophisticated work of literature that employs artful compositional techniques. This volume offers an original exploration of what the Qur'an might have meant to its first readers and how the Qur'an draws on, engages with, and diverges from ideas, narratives, and literary forms that may have informed it. The book will be an indispensable resource for scholars of Islam and Qur'anic studies.

Online abuse in sport has become a pervasive global challenge, affecting athletes, teams, officials, and sporting communities across all levels of competition. Despite growing awareness, scholarly attention has largely concentrated on hate speech, leaving other critical forms of abuse underexplored. This open access edited collection addresses this gap by offering a comprehensive examination of the multifaceted nature of online abuse in sport, structured around seven categories identified by Kurt Thomas: toxic content, content leakage, overloading, false reporting, impersonation, surveillance, and lockout and control. The volume comprises eight chapters, beginning with an introductory overview of online abuse in sport, followed by chapters that explore each category in depth. Each chapter defines the forms of abuse within its scope and discusses the key themes, impact, and potential solutions. By expanding the focus beyond traditional notions of online hate, this book provides an integrated and critical assessment of the diverse manifestations of online abuse in sport. It serves as an essential reference for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers seeking to understand, prevent, and respond to online harms in sporting contexts.

This book illustrates the theoretical relevance of emotions to analyse and interpret contemporary events and societies. Emotions explain social phenomena while providing critical and analytical tools to challenge dominant or conventional interpretations of them. Drawing on examples of empirical research on emotions, it examines the long-standing sociological significance of emotions, some of the most recent theoretical and methodological advances, and the importance of fruitful interdisciplinary contaminations. The book will appeal to students, scholars, and professionals interested in the intersection of emotions, society, and social change.

This open access book addresses issues related to viewing education as a business endeavor. It introduces the readers to central conceptual issues and relates them to the pedagogical, educational and social issues at various levels and sectors of education. The book offers paradigmatic approaches and theories used to model and examine education as a business endeavor. Business of Education is a global phenomenon that has experienced an exponential growth during the past decades; it goes well beyond the influence of private interests in shaping policymaking or the expansion of private schooling and encompasses policy, practice, and research in the field of education.
The work includes both classical positions and newer viewpoints challenging mainstream debates to approach the diverse manifestations of the business of education and the varying responses across the globe. The volume assesses the impact of business activities at various levels/sectors of education - lifelong learning, vocational education, supplementary education, higher education, teacher education and focuses on different issues and challenges, from financing to sustainability, from geopolitics to reform and on different geographical areas, such as Australia, Brazil, Chile, and Germany. The analyses draw on different frameworks - philanthropy, racial capitalism, transhumanism, neoliberalism - and go well beyond a materialist perspective of the topic at hand to include other important dimensions since controversies abound as to the impact and/or side-effects of these developments beyond their purely economic import. The book also critically discusses the future of the field by showcasing research that deliberate on different directions and that reflect on possible futures for (the business of) education. The research presented has strong global perspective and integrates in-depth conceptual analyses with real-world examples and case studies that aim at contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the business of education across different contexts and regions.

Worldwide, educational institutions at every level are increasingly recognizing that learners must cultivate and demonstrate key global competencies - skills that seamlessly translate across work, academic, and community settings. Offering a timely and rigorously researched exploration into the future of learning, The Emerald Handbook on Teaching Global Competencies redefines citizenship by revealing how cultural, linguistic, and technological transformations are reshaping our collective identity and suggests that education must transcend traditional, geographically bound disciplines to fully equip learners for the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly evolving global landscape.
In this comprehensive work, interdisciplinary research meets practice. The Emerald Handbook on Teaching Global Competencies champions an integrated approach that fosters emotional and social intelligence, creative problem solving, and interdisciplinary thinking, while also valuing transcultural insights and Indigenous knowledge. Through a rich array of case studies, empirical research, and innovative pedagogies, chapter authors demonstrate how dynamic, multimodal, lifelong learning environments can cultivate the key global competencies needed to bridge cultural divides, empower communities, and promote sustainable development.
An essential resource for academics, educators, and policymakers, this volume offers not only a critical synthesis of theory and practice but also an inspiring vision for reimagining educational spaces. Chapter authors challenge conventional models and call for a transformative rethinking of what it means to be educated in the 21st century, where learning is a catalyst for creating resilient, inclusive, and globally engaged communities.

Offers a much-needed perspective on the connections between community, policymaking, and the improvement of underperforming schools.
School reform remains a fraught issue in the United States as educators, policymakers, and communities strive to improve outcomes for all students. In The Grit and the Grind, Joshua L. Glazer, Cori Egan, William R. Berry, and Amar Fattal examine two ambitious efforts to improve the lowest-performing schools in Memphis, Tennessee. The book offers a rare inside look at the political, organizational, and educational challenges of improving schools at scale.
The two initiatives, the Achievement School District (ASD) and the Shelby County Innovation Zone (iZone), shared a common goal but pursued it through fundamentally different approaches. The ASD was a state-run turnaround district that removed schools from local control and placed them under the management of charter organizations. By contrast, the iZone operated through existing district institutions, relying on local educators and leaders to drive improvement. Despite common goals and substantial resources, the reforms developed in strikingly different ways. Drawing on years of research in Memphis, the authors move beyond familiar debates about charter schools and district reform to explore a deeper question: What does it take to improve schools in complex, pluralistic, and contested democratic societies? Their analysis reveals that educational improvement is simultaneously professional, organizational, and political. Efforts to enhance educational opportunities depend not only on curriculum, leadership, and expertise, but also on the legitimacy, trust, and community support that allow educational systems to learn from experience and sustain improvement.
At once a study of reform, organizations, and politics, The Grit and the Grind challenges simple explanations of success and failure, showing that meaningful improvement is forged through the slow, uncertain work of building systems capable of earning community trust while continuously strengthening teaching and learning.
