There were few options for Jewish patrons looking for a place to stay or celebrate key life events in turn-of-the-century New York City. To meet this need, entrepreneur Max Bernstein built Libby's Hotel and Baths, a magnificent $3 million, twelve-story luxury palace that towered over the tenements of New York City's gritty yet vibrant Lower East Side from 1926 until 1930. Bernstein's grand hotel was short-lived-it was demolished after falling victim to a predatory mortgage lending scheme and a land grab by corrupt Tammany politicians. The Ritz with a Shvitz illuminates the intrigue that an incestuous web of Tammany officials employed in their scheme to wrest control of Libby's Hotel and a large swath of the bustling neighborhood surrounding it. The rogues' gallery included Joseph Force Crater, the judge who vanished into the night, never to be seen or heard from again. Some historians speculate he was murdered because of his role in the takeover of Libby's Hotel. Bernstein's visionary building was razed and with it the dreams of a new, glamorous, gentrified, Jewish Lower East Side. The Ritz with a Shvitz is a compelling story of dreams and reality, greed and betrayal, corruption and reform and is a microcosm of that era of Tammany's oppressive control of New York City government.

This work chronicles the lives and legacies of Chicana and Chicano scholars whose formative experiences in the Chicano Movement shaped the development of Chicano studies and transformed higher education. Originating from the Reuniones de Colegas Chicanas-gatherings of veteran scholars reflecting on their shared histories-the volume features sixteen essays organized into five thematic sections that explore the intersections of activism, scholarship, and institutional change.

The contributors document how grassroots organizing evolved into academic inquiry, leading to the creation of departments, student support systems, and policy reforms that advanced equity and representation in universities. Essays address how community-engaged research influenced urban planning, health advocacy, and cultural production, while also highlighting Indigenous and transnational epistemologies that redefined theoretical frameworks in Chicano studies. The volume concludes with reflections on academic leadership and the breaking of barriers by Chicana scholars in higher education administration.

This book explores the radicalization and fascistization of the Ustasa-The Croatian Revolutionary Organization within the interwar Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and later Yugoslavia, whose tumultuous rise led to terrorism and racial cleansing throughout the western Balkans.

Using an interdisciplinary and socio-cultural approach, Constantin Iordachi and Goran Miljan trace the Ustasa's political trajectory from its ideological and organizational roots in the 1920s, to its guerrilla struggle and terrorist activities in the 1930s, to its genocidal rule, violent downfall, and post-1945 metamorphosis in exile.

By considering the paramount role played by prejudice, economic deprivation, and the breakdown of social institutions in fueling grievances against an existing socio-political system, the authors place the emergence of the Ustasa in the context of the interwar Kingdom of Yugoslavia but also in the wider perspective of the emergence of fascist movements and regimes in interwar and wartime Europe.

The book analyses the legal conditions for the use of insurance in waste management. The main focus of the study is the regulations of the EU and selected European countries, supplemented by a comparison with the legal regulations in the USA. The choice of the EU as the main subject of the research is due to the concept of rational ecological waste management developed in EU law. However, national and international legal instruments regulating waste management are not precisely reflected in insurance concepts covering waste risks. It proves necessary to develop a conceptual apparatus related to the definition of insurance waste risks. It seems valuable to define the role of insurance in a comprehensive waste risk management system at local and regional level.

The book examines the legal conditions for the use of insurance as a method of waste risk management. Therefore, part of the book is devoted to the application of EU environmental and waste management rules to the interpretation of financial collateral requirements and the use of insurance as a financial instrument. A special place in the book is occupied by considerations devoted to a less well-known insurance activity than the insurance contract, namely the insurance guarantee. Its qualities are increasingly recognised in the insurance market. Lived Reformation emphasises that the Reformation was for most a longlasting challenge, evident in church worship, pastoral care, policies for the poor, the spreading of literacy and implementing sexual norms.

Examines the presidential elections from 1832 to 2020 and reveals that the unequal representation of popular vote among states and wasted votes received by popular vote winners are major causes of the split between the popular vote result and Electoral College result.

During the 2020 presidential election, it was possible, if unlikely, for a candidate to win the election by winning only 21 percent of the popular vote in the nation. Inversely, it was possible for a candidate to win 79 percent of popular vote and still lose the election. Examining presidential elections from 1832 to 2020, Manabu Saeki reveals that the unequal representation of popular vote among states and wasted votes received by popular vote winners are major causes of the split between the popular vote result and Electoral College result. An average voter in the most overrepresented state holds Electoral College votes that are approximately twice as many as those of the average voter nationwide and four times larger than those of the most underrepresented state. Republican candidates today tend to win a significantly larger number of overrepresented states, thereby winning a larger number of Electoral College votes relative to the number of popular votes they win. However, Republican candidates also suffer more wasted votes than Democratic candidates. Further, Saeki analyzes the vote decision by individual voters. Voters with strong racist and/or authoritarian inclinations tended to vote for a Republican candidate prior to, as well as after, the 2016 election. There is no indication that Donald Trump mobilized the voters with racist or authoritarian predispositions.
