Amid the rapid industrialization and urbanization of the early twentieth century, Progressive Era activists across the United States fought for social, political, and economic change. Tennessee women were no exception. In Constructing Citizenship: Tennessee Public Women in the Progressive Era, Mary A. Evins and Minoa D. Uffelman present a collection of essays that explore the contributions and civic engagement of women in Tennessee during this transformative period.

Building upon their first volume, Tennessee Women in the Progressive Era, the contributors examine a variety of themes, organizationally structured in four parts: education, associations, service, and suffrage. Across seventeen chapters, the collection covers women's roles in higher education, medicine, and public health; the women's relief corps and patriotic outreach in Tennessee; the women's club movement on the road to suffrage; the power of feminist leadership; women of color leading the national fight for African American reparations and benevolence; philanthropy and community care; rural Tennessee women's support of suffrage; and more.

Drawing on a wealth of archival materials, including personal letters, newspaper editorials, and meeting minutes, each contributor foregrounds long-overlooked stories about Tennessee women's public work during the first half of the twentieth century. Covering a period largely missing from the history of Tennessee women, this anthology fills a critical gap in scholarship. Women's history scholars, Tennessee history specialists, and students of US history more broadly will all find it to be a valuable resource both for self-study and the classroom.

Throughout the volume, chapter authors emphasize the role of teaching dispositions and describe some of the day-to-day classroom practices used by veteran colleagues to reduce stress and anxiety on the job. This handbook is essential reading for pre-service and in-service teachers, scholars, and teacher educators.

Captures in unprecedented depth the cultural significance of the designed landscape and its relationship with Bluestocking philosophy. Situated within the broader context of eighteenth-century intellectual and cultural history, this collection redefines the role of the Bluestocking circle in shaping Britain's landscapes and social ideals. Against the backdrop of Whiggish notions of "improvement"-encompassing agricultural innovation, aesthetic refinement, and moral progress-it explores how women such as Elizabeth Montagu, Mary Delany, and Elizabeth Carter navigated the intersections of polite sociability, intellectual production, and estate management. Their contributions reveal a dynamic interplay between cultural critique and practical reform, positioning them as active participants in the period's debates on land, labour, and national identity. Drawing on insights from the Elizabeth Montagu's Correspondence Online (EMCO) project, these essays uncover the creative and social tensions embedded in iconic estates such as Montagu's Sandleford and Lord Lyttelton's Hagley Hall. They delve into the poetic and philosophical musings of James Woodhouse, the sociable artistry of Mary Delany, and the symbolic landscapes of Wrest Park. By examining correspondence, poetry, visual arts, and cartography, this volume offers an unprecedented exploration of the ways Bluestocking women engaged with and redefined the designed landscape as a site of intellectual and environmental innovation. This interdisciplinary collection reshapes the historiography of gender, environment, and cultural progress, offering fresh insights into the enduring significance of eighteenth-century landscapes and the intellectual communities that shaped them.

In this book, Dr Rene Novak reveals new ways of understanding children's play by liberating it from the constraints of standardised educational agendas. Drawing on Heidegger's concepts of Enframing and poiesis, and phenomenological inquiry, this innovative study explores how immersive virtual reality (VR) videos can serve as metaphysical laboratories. Through vivid, embodied experiences, early childhood educators cross the cybernetic looking glass to become one with play and discover transformative insights for holistic child development.

Dr Rene Novak investigates the potential of immersive pedagogy by merging visual pedagogy with embodiment theory to highlight the critical role of teacher presence in educational phenomena. Educators become "invisible observers," stepping inside the flow of play while relinquishing preconceived enframed discourses and misconceptions. The result is a reshaping of pedagogy and policy, steering away from prescriptive goals toward play as a self-actualising educational experience.

By reconceptualising how free play unfolds, this book challenges educators, policymakers, and parents to embrace the true essence of play in early learning. This book is an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand how to foster creativity, social-emotional growth, and deeper engagement in a play-based curriculum.

Delphine Conzelmann unpacks the rich interplay of authority, tradition, and innovation in the works of William of Saint-Thierry, Benedictine abbott and Cistercian monk, whose contributions to Christian history were long overshadowed by those of his contemporaries.
The volume seeks to reconcile seemingly contradictory aspects of this distinctive 12th-century biography, revealing what intention unites his stark criticism of new dialectic methods, his enthusiastic embrace of monastic reform, and his quest for reclusion. Discover the spiritual depth and doctrinal genius of William of Saint-Thierry in this comprehensive study.

With a clear, engaging writing style and fascinating examples using a variety of real data, this text covers the contemporary statistical techniques that students will encounter in the world of social research. It covers these techniques at an introductory level and carefully guides students through increasingly complex examples without intimidating them. Recurrent examples using four timely topics-immigration, income inequality, the distribution of household labor, and health (including attitudes toward doctors and pandemic restrictions)-help students understand how the techniques fit together and how to use the techniques in combination with one another. A superb author-created web resource accompanies the text. How to make clear presentations of research results is also a feature of the text.

New to this edition:

  • Most of the literature examples that end each chapter are new and use very recent research from top academic journals (over half of the new literature examples are from 2023 or 2024). They feature research about some of the most pertinent and provocative social issues of the day: political polarization, conspiracy beliefs, mental health, transgender support, racial stereotypes, vaccine refusal, sexual harassment, and numerous facets of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Examples throughout the book use the most recent data from the General Social Survey. Four timely topics are threaded throughout the book: immigration, income inequality, the distribution of household labor, and health. Linneman uses these topics recurrently with different statistical techniques to illustrate how the techniques are related to one another.
  • The new edition more explicitly emphasizes that the various techniques the students are learning are often used in combination with one another. Linneman carefully scaffolds the techniques, introducing a new technique and then showing how this technique can be combined with techniques taught in previous chapters. He does this with a new emphasis on psychologically supporting students who might be trepidatious about their newfound statistical skills.

Through a partial critical edition and study of Peter Comestor's lectures, this volume recontextualizes the biblical exegesis of the twelfth-century Latin cathedral schools within the frameworks of the study of ars grammatica, underscoring the importance of the master-disciple relationship in forming medieval exegetical schools of thought. This study critically examines the Latin biblical lectures of Peter Comestor, a twelfth-century scholar based in Paris, focusing on his commentary on the Gospel of Luke and its glossing tradition. The study positions Comestor's lectures among Latin biblical commentaries produced in the cathedral schools of Laon and Paris, a vital intellectual movement shaped by well-known figures such as Anselm of Laon and Peter Lombard, and which provided the foundations for the University of Paris.

Recent scholarship has sought to bridge the gap between biblical commentaries and systematic theological treatises by highlighting the shared didactic methodologies between the medieval study of the liberal arts and sacred scripture. This study of Comestor's Luke lectures expands these efforts, underscoring the role of classical philology and liberal arts pedagogy in shaping medieval theological thought.

The volume highlights how the cathedral school scholars of northern France approached Christian theology as a work of textual criticism, exploring a wide range of subjects-from geometry to canon law-through biblical interpretation. By tracing these intellectual traditions, the study uncovers the pedagogical practices that informed the understanding of Christian biblical exegesis in the Latin Middle Ages, particularly in the period leading up to the establishment of Europe's first universities and theology faculties.

School leaders work in increasingly complex systems. Alongside leading learning, they daily navigate the needs and expectations of educational departments, teachers, students, parents, society, and themselves. Leadership can therefore be a dynamic vocational calling, but studies show that principals' professional agency, career sustainability, and wellbeing are diminishing. This Element brings a fresh perspective to how educational leaders can be better served and supported by collaborative, co-agentic partnerships at this time. It makes the case for professional supervision, a practice commonplace in clinical and pastoral professions that offers facilitated, action-oriented attention to the interplay of role, 'soul', and context. As a practice-based primer, this Element reclaims supervision against outdated associations with performance management by drawing on interdisciplinary research and the authors' own experience as supervisor partners with principals. It proposes a new schema of professional supervision in education informed by curiosity, unlearning, resonance, and attunement in a rapidly changing world.

This accessible book explores toxic masculinity, looking at how to define it, and how we can and should challenge its spread.

This book draws on Derrida's deconstruction, using the philosophical lens to deconstruct what toxic masculinity means and to better understand its significance for our society. It focuses on how harmful aspects of masculinity spread, infiltrate, and intoxicate our societies and how existing structures allow aspects of harmful masculinity to become toxic. This book also features discussions and analysis of participants' lived experiences of masculinities, alongside the author's reflections. It explores the relevance of toxic masculinity in work environments, politics, relationships, and gender roles and seeks to challenge and mitigate its damages for everyone.

Encouraging critical thinking and understanding of healthier ways of being for all, this timely book will be of interest to therapists, counselors, teachers, and practitioners of family studies. It will also be useful reading for students in the fields of psychology, gender studies, sociology, and related fields.

As Asia alone holds the majority of the world's fast-expanding private higher education (PHE), this volume probes the character, diversity, and significance of Asian PHE.

Across seven national case studies, astride both developing and developed countries, older and newer HE systems, in entrenched democracies to creakier ones, to Communist rule, the volume systematically addresses a common PHE typology. This fosters volume coherence and cross-national comparison. The two most central comparisons within each country are private vs public and private versus private. Authors all identify significant differences between PHE and its longer standing public counterparts, though with variation in the degree and contours of blurring across sectors. Even more novel for scholarship on this subject matter, authors dig into patterns of differences and similarities across the now quite varied manifestations of PHE: religious, gender, nationally elite, increasingly business and job-oriented, international, nonprofit, for-profit etc. However rigorous the comparative frameworks contributing to volume coherence, authors integrate particulars of national historical and contemporary context wherever their national expertise leads them. This helps make the book appropriate for those generally interested in Asian affairs, especially in East and Southeast Asia. At the same, the private-public and private-private comparisons engage most key issues of top concern to those keenly interested in higher education generally: institutional autonomy versus government control, regulation, competition across institutions, management, effectiveness and innovation, faculty composition and roles, student composition and roles, accountability measures, challenges of quality assurance amid rapid expansion, the partial privatization of public institutions, tuition, internationalization, and so forth.

The volume will be valuable for all concerned with global PHE and HE overall. It should likewise be an important work for those studying, working in, or making policy within or for PHE in Asia.

This volume explores educational transformation as a tool for community development in northern Uganda, with an emphasis on student-centred, hybrid and problem-based learning. It addresses key questions about existing education systems, the need for transformation, desired outcomes and foreseeable challenges. The introductory chapter contextualises the reforms within Uganda's colonial history, while subsequent chapters analyse institutional practices, curriculum design, quality of education and innovation in teaching and learning. The book argues for new participatory learning infrastructures, real-world problems and curricular entrepreneurship to enhance graduates' employability and position them as active contributors to community development. Exploring the implications of a novel theory of educational desire on the prevailing modes of educational research and theory, this book contextualises the realm of education studies through the challenging philosophies and theories of Lacan, thereby providing a genuinely alternative approach to the study of education.

Structured into three main parts, the book provides a discussion of Lacanian ideas within educational research by setting out a description and analysis of how a theory of desire may work in educational settings and practice. Using vignettes and examples to drive the discussion, chapters explore the pivotal aspects of desire, which could be imaginary, symbolic, or real, elucidated by a mapping of discourses and exploring the reluctance of educational studies to engage with themes related to desire and psychoanalysis. Ultimately, the book argues for the need to disrupt the theoretical and practical logics and models that limit teacher practice, such as accountability, visible learning, competencies, pedagogical knowledge, and professional development, and how these can be better understood from a Lacanian perspective.

This book highlights the intimate connection between racial/ethnic equity and school and community safety, the consequences of current inequities, and establishes the way forward in terms of future research, policy, and practice.

School safety has taken on increased urgency as the United States' educational systems, families, and students grapple with the residual effects of a public health pandemic that kept students out of classrooms and away from critical supportive services. It is increasingly important to center the investigation, understanding, and policy implementations that highlight the correlates, root causes, and consequences of racial/ethnic inequality in the pursuit of school safety. This book addresses a range of aspects impacting racial/ethnic equity and school safety, all of which is being shaped by a growing population of diverse youth. The chapters in this volume touch on family, schools, neighborhoods, and communities; however, common to all of these chapters is an understanding of the challenges, barriers, consequences, and importance of connecting minoritized students to provide opportunities and protection. Thus, each of these chapters takes care to identify points for intervention, suggestions for policy, and promising directions for future research. Each study featured in this book stands out for its original and noteworthy contribution to the literature on the significance of race/ethnicity in regard to school safety research. Future research should further expand our understanding of equity, school safety, and justice for one of the fastest growing segments of the population - racial/ethnic minority youth. The growing number of racial/ethnic minority youth present both a challenge and an opportunity for increasingly diverse societies, communities, and schools.
This book was originally published as a special issue of Journal of School Violence.

This volume outlines powerful theoretical and methodological approaches for expanding the possibilities of educational research. By illuminating speculative education as an emerging scholarly practice, this collection offers pragmatic guidance for scholarly world-building.

It introduces "speculative education" as a critical and hopeful approach to educational research. Through empirical scholarship, the book describes paradigms of collective thriving beyond the existing horizons guiding research, policy, and practice in educational research. The collection of scholarship here offers visionary and future-oriented approaches to teaching and learning that operate beyond the bounds of current social, economic, and cultural arrangements that perpetuate various forms of oppression. Through specific examples and a collection of thematic interludes, this collection details a framework through which educational researchers and practitioners can enact speculative dreaming. This speculative framework seeks to foreground ethical relations as the basis of civic trust; foster an ethos of collaborative practice as the work of world-building; and engage in joyful struggle toward just futures. Ultimately, this volume highlights how researchers, designers, educators, and individuals linked in community with each other must question the intended outcomes of educational scholarship writ large and if the priors of academic scholarship actually lead toward destinations of freedom. In recognizing the pluralistic nature of speculative worlds that might be built, the possibilities for new educational models and experiences are boundless.

This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of the Learning Sciences.

Develops a method for placing book-historical evidence in dialogue with literary meaning through a detailed investigation of a MS Bodley 851. How do you read a medieval book? And what is the relationship between the study of manuscripts as material artifacts and the study of their textual contents? This book develops a method for placing book-historical evidence in dialogue with literary meaning. Medieval manuscripts do not simply witness the texts they contain: through the process of their making, they preserve and generate knowledge about literature itself. Central to the expression of method in this study is a detailed investigation of an immensely complex composite manuscript, Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Bodley 851. This manuscript survives as an important representative of textual cultures popular in late-medieval England: it attests the work of at least eight scribal agents and contains an infamous scribal version of Piers Plowman (Z-text), the sole surviving copy of Walter Map's De nugis curialium, and an array of satirical Anglo-Latin poetry, including the Apocalypsis goliae episcopi, the Speculum stultorum, and the Bridlington Prophecy. Close attention to the production of Bodley 851 underpins critical examinations of fragmentary misogamy, the construction of literary sequences, and the extent of pseudonymous authorship in the manuscript record.

No prominent pragmatist philosopher to date has offered us a fully developed theory of history or historical interpretation. Nevertheless, a number of pivotal arguments and suggestions made by the pragmatists appeared to many both insightful and pertinent enough to offer a distinctive promise of a cohesive and distinctive general pragmatist perspective in historical theory. The present contribution is intended to secure some advances in this direction, focusing on the relationships between objectivity and perspective; between representation as an accurate correspondence to reality and the social, cultural sense of representation as being represented and being representative; as well as the relationship between individualizing comprehension and generalizing abstraction in historical contexts.

Just as Charles I's reign ended upon the scaffold at the close of the British Civil Wars, it began in a disastrous entry into the Thirty Years' War. By studying the movement of people-soldiers, refugees, diplomats, exiles, merchants, and artists-and news and ideas between the Stuart kingdoms and the war-torn Continent, this book argues that the Thirty Years' War was the defining issue of the beginning of the young king's reign. This interdisciplinary cultural history brings together the words and images of these violent beginnings: the bellicose days.

Examining different regions and areas, the work of individual councils and their relations with one another and with the BBFC, it offers a broad historical exploration of the intricacies of film censorship in action. Drawing on local archival material and considering the activities of local government in enforcing Cinematograph legislation, this work considers the significance of film censorship apparatus and processes in shaping and informing responses to and control of film culture in different locations across the twentieth century.

Provides a diachronic view of Asian German film history from early Orientalism to increasing collaboration as well as exploration of difference and alternate forms of national and cultural belonging. From re-creating seedy opium dens and Hindu temples on set to capturing dazzling sights of Tokyo's neon-lit streets and Berlin's bustling Dong Xuan Center on location, cinema has provided German-speaking audiences a window into the "exotic" cultures of Asia since the early 1900s. Over time, unilateral German imaginings of Asian cultures and people increasingly gave way to collaboration with Asian countries and more variegated portrayals of the diasporic experiences of Asians in Europe, though Orientalist tropes have not been fully mitigated. The present volume embraces several understudied regions of Asia as well as Austria and Switzerland. It incorporates archival research, close scene analyses, and genre overviews that elucidate the production and reception histories of individual films, drawing on the knowledge of film historians, cultural studies scholars, and Germanists based in North America, Europe, and Asia. The volume approaches film history by observing three distinct phenomena: early German cinematic imaginings of Asia, co-productions shot on location, and representations of the Asian German diaspora. The book aims to chart unwritten chapters of film history by pitching new readings of old masterpieces, exploring lesser-known works of prolific directors, and uncovering the roles of Asian collaborators from the early twentieth century to the new millennium.

This volume provides the first full length English translation of the commentary on the Book of Job by Didymus the Blind. One of the earliest line-by-line commentaries on Job to survive from late antiquity, it covers the entirety of the first sixteen chapters of the LXX text of Job with a few unfortunate lacunae. It represents the third commentary of Didymus published in the Fathers of the Church series (preceded by Didymus' On Genesis and On Zechariah translated by Robert C. Hill) and the last of the commentaries discovered at Tura in 1941 that was edited for circulation in late antiquity, since Didymus' comments on Ecclesiastes and Psalms are unedited transcripts of his public lectures, replete with student questions.

The Book of Job has garnered perpetual attention because of its intriguing dialogues between God and the Devil, Job and his wife, Job and his three friends and inevitably between Job and God. In recent years, it has become the focus of attention among scholars seeking to make sense of the horrors of the Holocaust and other 20th century atrocities where unlimited human cruelty and injustice strained any notions of Providence and the salvific nature of suffering by the righteous. Written at a pivotal time when Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism were emerging as distinct interpretive traditions, Didymus' commentary on the Book of Job offers important insights into the interpretation of Job based on the LXX translation which was a foundational text for early Christian doctrine, spirituality and liturgy. His presentation of Job as the icon of a student-loving teacher stands in contrast to the portrait of a blasphemous Job more familiar to modern audiences that value a bold iconoclastic character who puts God on trial for allowing human injustice. Didymus' comments on Job hint at the blind teacher's own mature consideration of his experience as a Christian teacher, concerned to train other potential leaders in the burgeoning post-Constantinian Church, whether as an ecclesiastical minister, monastic abba, governor, or teacher. As such, this early Christian commentary on the Book of Job merits further study because it illustrates an early exegetical trajectory that was already embedded in the Christian tradition prior Jerome's advocacy of the Hebraica Veritas.

Narrative creativity is a new, neuroscience-based approach to innovation, problem solving, and resilience that has proved effective in business executives, scientists, engineers, doctors, and students as young as eight. This Element offers a concise introduction to narrative creativity's theory and practice. It distinguishes narrative creativity from ideation, divergent thinking, design thinking, brainstorming, and other current approaches to cultivating creativity. It traces the biological origins of narrative creativity and explains why narrative creativity will always be mechanically impossible for computer artificial intelligences. It provides practical exercises, developed and tested in hundreds of classrooms and businesses, and validated independently by the US Army, for improving narrative creativity. It explains how narrative creativity contributes to technological innovation, scientific progress, cultural growth, and psychological well-being, and it describes how narrative creativity can be assessed. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This innovative, autoethnographic study examines 12 stories of "wobble" moments-looking at "wobble" as an emotional experience-to illuminate new perspectives on LGBTQIA+ identity, school violence, racism, mental illness in students and teachers, and the emotional costs of empathy.

Utilizing the author's experiences as they navigate education's most difficult years of practice from 2020 to 2022 and extending the existing scholarship on dialogical pedagogy and teacher identity by offering a framework that goes "beyond wobble," it provides a new theory for how teachers can deconstruct the emotions that surround the heaviest moments of their practice, shift perspectives on situations and selves, and "see the light" of compassionate possibility in both person and practice.

A sobering inquiry which provides valuable insight into the emotional landscape of a contemporary classroom embroiled in America's culture wars and serves as a poignant exemplar of dialogical pedagogy in practice, it will appeal to scholars and post-graduate students of teacher education, educational psychology, and education policy.

The Church of Scotland divine Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661) was among the first theologians to say that Christ's saving work took place to fulfill an agreement between God and Christ that had been made in eternity. By placing Rutherford's major statements of this new doctrine in their various social, political, polemical, and pastoral contexts, this book provides a fresh explanation for the dramatic rise of the eternal covenant of redemption to become the cornerstone of Reformed federal theology and offers a case-study in the development of doctrine.
