The Texas General Land Office's map collection contains over 45,000 maps, some dating from the sixteenth century, making it one of the most important cartographic archives in Texas. During the early years of the Cold War, Canada and the United States began to develop a peacetime defence relationship. Initial co-operation was limited to the construction of minor installations and the creation of joint plans. But in 1950 both countries began to develop an air defence system to protect North America from the Soviet threat.

Securing the Continental Skies uses archival sources that have become available since the end of the Cold War to offer new insights into the development of the North American air defence system during the 1940s and 1950s. Matthew Trudgen analyzes the negotiations behind several recommendations from the Permanent Joint Board on Defence, three early-warning radar lines, and the North American Air Defence Command (NORAD). He argues that in Canada, air defence policy was shaped by different conceptions of the national interest among the Cabinet, the Department of External Affairs, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the departments of Transport, Defence Production, and Northern Affairs and Natural Resources. In the United States, air defence policy reflected differing assessments of the importance of continental defence by the Truman and Eisenhower administrations. Ultimately North America's air defences were the outcome of a variety of factors, including Canadian political considerations and emerging nationalism, the state of Canada's electronics industry, the relationship between both countries' air forces, and American nuclear strategy.

Securing the Continental Skies challenges assumptions about Canadian foreign relations in the 1940s and 1950s and offers a new assessment of military co-operation between Canada and the United States.

Socialist Subjectivities works within the logics of queer time to reanimate East German subjectivities in the 1970s and 1980s beyond the narrative of the German Democratic Republic's long march towards demise. While East Germany certainly ended in dissolution, not all East Germans experienced late socialism in a singular manner. Rather, even after a generation of building socialism, East Germans under Honecker continued to pursue a range of socialist presents and a multiplicity of socialist futures up to and beyond 1989. This edited volume utilizes queer temporalities to interrogate how individuals lived non-normative possibilities in a highly normative world.

Whether one was an apparatchik, artist, or alcoholic, the everyday interactions, experiences, and rituals of late socialism proved crucial to establishing the conditions around which subjecthood was constructed. Despite stereotypes of apathy and inertia, East Germans lent a considerable dynamism to their society, and by generating a cacophony of opinions and a heterogeneity of ideas, they constantly transformed state socialism. By foregrounding socialist subjects and the iterative nature of socialism during these decades, this volume paints a richer portrait of East Germany-one that illuminates how East Germans imagined their futures in a society whose collapse they could not foresee.

All miners and smelter workers know the folly of going on strike when their employer holds a stockpile. In 1958 the International Nickel Company had enough nickel on hand to guarantee sales for at least six months. Despite this, fourteen thousand miners and smeltermen in Sudbury, Ontario, downed their tools and struck against the corporate titan of the mining industry.

Standing Up to Big Nickel is a comprehensive portrait of a pivotal strike by the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, a union that has inspired exceptional levels of solidarity among its members. The Cold War and the resulting instabilities in the Canadian labour movement form the backdrop to Elizabeth Quinlan's engrossing analysis. The union straddled the line, she shows, between its historical commitment to working-class struggle and the newly restrictive legal landscape of the postwar era. Retrospective accounts by surviving union members, leaders, family, and community members bring to life the history of a distinctive group of workers who sweated over smelter furnaces and toiled underground in perilous conditions.

Leadership succession is a complex process in that each situation is contextually unique. This book explores 10 narratives in the Bible that demonstrate the contextual complexities of leader succession and how leaders navigated it, for the good and bad. Each chapter focuses on a different example of leader succession: six Old Testament narratives, three New Testament narratives, and one chapter that takes a more holistic Scriptural approach. The chapters provide practical organizational leadership principles that can be applied to contemporary succession planning.

Overall, this work contributes to an emerging field of succession planning and informs organizational leaders how to lead from a Biblical perspective.

A provocative retelling of shipwreck tales from the Northwest Coast The Northwest Coast of North America is a treacherous place. Unforgiving coastlines, powerful currents, unpredictable weather, and features such as the notorious Columbia River bar have resulted in more than two thousand shipwrecks, earning the coastal areas of Oregon, Washington, and Vancouver Island the moniker "Graveyard of the Pacific." Beginning with a Spanish galleon that came ashore in northern Oregon in 1693 and continuing into the recent past, Wrecked includes stories of many vessels that met their fate along the rugged coast and the meanings made of these events by both Indigenous and settler survivors and observers.

Whether in the form of a fur-trading schooner that was destroyed in 1811, a passenger liner lost in 1906, or an almost-empty tanker broken on the shore in 1999, shipwrecks on the Northwest Coast opens up conversations about colonialism and Indigenous persistence. Thrush's retelling of shipwreck tales highlights the ways in which the three central myths of settler colonialism-the disappearance of Indigenous people, the control of an endlessly abundant nature, and the idea that the past would stay past-proved to be untrue. As a critical cultural history of this iconic element of the region, Wrecked demonstrates how the history of shipwrecks reveals the fraught and unfinished business of colonization on the Northwest Coast.
