This content-rich and inspirational book offers complementary theoretical and practical perspectives from detailed research and analysis of decent work, inclusion and sustainability issues in Brazil, Canada, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States and West Africa.
In today's turbulent world marked by risk and uncertainty, the values of decent work, inclusion and sustainability are no longer a simple choice, but vital guiding principles that enable individuals, organisations, and governments to reimagine work as a source of dignity and purpose, even in the face of adversity. The thirteen chapters in this volume focus on effective ways to support individuals in their search for meaningful self-discovery and work within a career guidance and counselling context.
With a new chapter, conclusion, and a revised introduction, this book will be beneficial to students, researchers, teachers, policymakers, guidance and counselling practitioners who have an interest in decent work, inclusion and sustainability, human psychology, social science, behavioural science, youth work, public employment services, mental health and well-being, counselling, education, and community development. The other chapters were originally published in the British Journal of Guidance and Counselling.

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the healthcare sector is certain to boost levels of automation and productivity but, paradoxically, it will also increase the availability of "first line competence." At the same time as demographic trends are affecting demand for health and social care, the technological developments we are seeing make it highly likely that AI will play a decisive role in tackling the challenges our healthcare systems will encounter. This book reveals systemic connections to tackle questions about the potential impact of AI on future challenges in the healthcare sector.
Specifically, it develops practical proposals for ways in which AI can be applied to solve these forthcoming issues. It emphasizes the importance of AI in what is known in the literature as human augmentation. The book's innovative perspective is apparent in the way it challenges conventional wisdom in the context of several pressing questions, such as:
* What opportunities and challenges could arise from the application of AI in the healthcare sector?
* How can the philosophy of medicine, viewed from a systemic perspective, help us to understand, explain, and resolve some of the future challenges in the healthcare sector?
* How could AI affect inclusive employment opportunities for people with disabilities?
The book also contains an underlying argument to the effect that the rational approach adopted by economists is perhaps less rational when applied to a healthcare sector that is crying out for more "first line competence."
The primary readership will be academic, but the book will also appeal to policymakers, consultants, HR departments, healthcare stakeholders, and related practitioners.

Lifestyle Medicine From the Inside Out: Using Positive Psychology in Healthy Lifestyles for Positive Health summarizes the principles, science, and practice of how positive psychology can be integrated into lifestyle medicine for positive health in health care and self-care. This integration builds physical health and well-being, buffers against adversity, and promotes personal growth after traumatic experiences. By intertwining healthy habits and positive psychology-based activities, including personal strengths and what is meaningful to each person, individuals can truly thrive. Such an approach is what the authors refer to as practicing "lifestyle medicine from the inside out."
Co-authored by the lead developer of the original lifestyle medicine competencies, this book suggests positive health expansions for each competency, outlines specific questions that drive personal reflection for change and positive clinical interactions, and describes the step-by-step approach in case studies. Such innovative clinical practice that connects with what matters most to individuals is foundational to care.
In a rapidly changing and increasingly challenging world, health professionals in a wide variety of roles practicing in lifestyle medicine, primary care, and across medical specialties, patients, and all individuals can benefit from the insights and practical tips outlined in this book to achieve and maintain flourishing.

This book explores a key phenomenon that has been accelerated by the COVID-19 crisis, namely, the crossroads at which social welfare professionals find themselves. This is a crossroads where, on the one hand, there is an accelerated digitalization process and a reorganization of social programs, while on the other hand, we are confronted by the basic challenge of designing social policies and their methods of evaluation, that is, the generation of robust data that will allow better evaluation of social projects and programs.
Rigorously analyzing the crossroads at which social welfare programs find themselves and the new demands for the education of professionals involved in social welfare programs, several key issues can be discerned;
* the theoretical debate surrounding the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the process of redefining globalization in which we are immersed.
* the challenges to be met by welfare programs, and the good practices that are being implemented.
* the key issue of how to generate more robust data in the field of social services and social protection.
* how to increase the competencies of professionals through education in schools of social work.
Providing 15 newly written chapters drawn from both the global north and the global south, it offers a set of recommendations to address the challenges of inequality and social inclusion in the coming years.
It will be of interest to all academics, students and practitioners working in the fields of social work, social welfare and social development.

Over the 153-year period since 1870, the phenomenon of globalisation has been shaped and reshaped. As we look back at the events that shaped our understanding of the process and its momentum before and after the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), it became clear that the process of globalisation has changed and continues to evolve, which requires a deeper analysis. The book answers the question of why the performance of the hyper-globalisation period has not continued during the post-GFC period after 2010, and what might be expected going forward. Apart from the fact that the fourth globalisation wave period between 2010 to the early 2020s has been characterised by a range of global shocks that caused more volatility, instability, and uncertainty, the major economic determinants of globalisation have also slowed markedly. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by the geopolitical uncertainty and instability all caused global contagion effects around the world, with economic, socio-economic, and geopolitical consequences and responses.
This book aims to analyse most of these global events and shocks and attempted to gather a deeper understanding of the present drivers of globalisation and what the major trends and shifts are geo-economically, socio-economically, and geopolitically. The conclusions drawn include that globalisation remains, despite the current slowbalisation, an integrated process that is globally entrenched, yet complex, cyclical, multifaceted and multiplex.
This book is aimed at academics in economics, political sciences, social sciences, and may also find an audience among international policymakers and scholars at multilateral institutions such as the World Bank and the United Nations.

COVID-19 and Bangladesh analyzes the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and features the socioeconomic fallouts for disadvantaged communities in Bangladesh, their coping mechanisms, and implications for the country's development ambitions.
The contributors to the book examine the immediate impact of economic adversities, which rapidly translated into health, employment, education, and other socioeconomic problems. They show that the pandemic has disproportionately impacted the communities that were traditionally left behind and created a new group of people that are "pushed behind". Structured in four sections, the book examines impact and adjustment in the areas of employment, income, and expenditure and health, education, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and offers policy perspectives. The empirical analysis and policy conclusions presented in the chapters are based on official secondary data, household-level primary surveys, focus-group discussions, key informant interviews, and reviews of public policy documents. The policy conclusions and outlook presented in the book can be instructive for other low-middle income, or graduating least developed countries (LDC).
A unique contribution to the current debate on the diverse implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, this book will be of interest to policymakers and academics studying health and society in Asia and other countries of the Global South.

In the United States, public memory of World War I remains weak, especially compared to other conflicts. A YouGov poll from 2014 revealed that while three quarters of Americans believed the history of World War I to be relevant today, only half could correctly name the year hostilities began and only a little more than a third knew when the United States entered the war. This lack of cultural memory is in stark contrast to the war's historical significance: empires fell and new nations were born, instability brought about yet another world war and ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and accelerated social reforms saw traditional conventions rejected and minority violence increase.
The First World War is easily one of the most transformative and important events of world history. A Centennial Perspective on Texas in the Great War provides a record of the memorialization of World War I in Texas in 2017 as well as offering critical background on the importance of the conflict in the United States and Texas today.

The sixth edition of The Sixties is a provocative account of a transformative era in American history, exploring the significant political, social, and cultural changes that many citizens found to be not only necessary, but mandatory.
The book explores the 1960s both chronologically and thematically, from the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins and presidential election to the early 1970s and the fight for women's liberation and withdrawal from Vietnam. It examines the unique social movements that merged during and after 1968 to form a "sixties culture" that advocated for empowerment and liberation. The final chapter on legacies and the section of additional reading have been revised and updated for the sixth edition, now including more recent material to reinforce the book's themes and explore the impacts of the sixties that are still felt today. Additional coverage of women and the LGBTQ and Latino/a communities paints a richer portrait of the decade of tumult and change.
Lucid and engaging, The Sixties is a stimulating text ideal for students and general readers interested in one of the most significant eras in American history-the 1960s.

This book explores and develops the ongoing conversation about how Taiwan navigated through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Emphasizing the themes of governance and governmentality, it moves the foci of the discussion from COVID policies to the social and political orders undergirding the statecraft of pandemic management. Furthermore, it analyzes how the pandemic fostered a historical moment at which new forms of governance and governmentality were beginning to take root. It also situates Taiwan's precarious nationhood in its global context, thereby challenging a prevalent methodological nationalism - the assumption that the nation is a natural unit of analysis whose borders are more or less unquestioned - and contributing to decolonizing Western theories with perspectives from the Global South.
Presenting rich original materials on the legal and public debates, individual reflections, and grassroots campaigns during COVID, this book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Taiwan's governance and social health policy, as well as medical anthropology and sociology.

Launched in 2004, the Latin American regional institution of ALBA (Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra America: Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America) sought to overcome the historical legacies of neocolonial domination by consecrating the values of cooperation, inclusive development, and popular power.
As part of a region-wide effort among states and social movements to break out of the destructive effects of capitalist agriculture, the elevation of food sovereignty-based on the protection of rural livelihoods, land redistribution, and sustainable agricultural production (agroecology)-became a cornerstone of ALBA's development policy. And yet, these regional aspirations barely saw the light of day, while Venezuela (the beating heart of ALBA) experienced the worst food crisis in its history. How did this come to pass?
Based on extensive fieldwork in Venezuela, where the majority of ALBA's food policies reside, Cultivating Socialism provides the first in-depth study of the ways in which peasants, workers, and states working through ALBA attempted to redress the inequities of commercial agriculture and the limits and contradictions encountered on the road to a regional food sovereignty regime. With his analysis of the politics of food sovereignty within ALBA, Rowan Lubbock offers important lessons about how we might think about emancipatory politics today and in the future.

This volume provides a concise overview of the diachronic development of composite predicates (CPs) in Late Modern English, offering clearer evidence of ongoing language change using data less readily available in other corpora.
While previous scholarship on CPs exists from a synchronic perspective, this book is the first to focus exclusively on Late Modern English with a diachronic approach to CPs, understood as phraseological verbs consisting of a verb and a deverbal noun or this combination with a preposition, such as to ask a question or to take hold of. The volume builds on real-life spoken data encompassing the proceedings of the Old Bailey at the Central Criminal Court in London, which predate the invention of audio-recording technology. Leone explores syntactic and semantic changes and the role performed by phenomena associated with grammaticalization, lexicalization and idiomatization in this period from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives.
The book sheds light on ongoing processes of change in spoken data, enriching knowledge on language change in this period and offering directions for future research. This book will appeal to scholars in English historical linguistics, syntax and semantics, and language change.

This book examines the progression of real estate development within the deindustrialization-financialization nexus. It explores the roles it has in semi-peripheral contexts such as Romania, where it overlaps with the process of the transformation of state socialism into neoliberal capitalism, viewed at the intersection of global, national, and local forces.
The book focuses on real estate development in Romania as a product and a driver of capitalism. It contributes to ongoing debates in critical urban theories and Marxist perspectives in urban sociology. Focusing on the under-researched East European region, it decenters social research and fine-tunes the political economy theory about state and economic restructuring. The book contains methodological and theoretical insights that are useful in other contexts beyond Romania and Central and Eastern Europe, especially in other (semi)peripheral emerging markets. The focus of critical inquiry into capitalist transformations adopted in this book can also support political activism. It uncovers the varieties of the deindustrialization-financialization nexus in real estate built on the dismantled pre-1990 socialist industrial plants. The chapters describe the advancement of real estate investments across second and third-tier cities, displaying uneven development and subordinate financialization at the intersection of local and global processes and political and economic actors.
It will be of interest to researchers and students of urban sociology, economic sociology, political economy, human geography, and political geography.

This book examines how the on-paper hydropower boom impacts the safe and fair access to water and energy in emerging economies.
The global hydropower boom is largely made up of small hydropower plants located in emerging economies, but a lack of funding, over-ambitious planning, and corruption have halted the production of these projects. Describing this state as the 'on-paper' hydropower boom, this book shifts attention to the hydrosocial problems arising from hydropower projects that remain on paper. It examines how these proposed but unbuilt projects can lead to disruptions in the control and governance of water resources and increase the international dependence of emerging countries due to deep problems in their sustainable development planning and how all this can affect both ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. In doing so, it critically examines the dominant discourses on energy security and sustainable development, emphasises the extent to which the effects of global imperialism are at play, and examines the effects of international power relations in the hydrosocial context and their implications for perpetuating international relations of dependency. Further, this book provides a unique perspective on the global hydropower boom by highlighting that although the global hydropower boom largely remains on paper, it can still have a significant impact on human-water systems. Contributing to the debate on hydrosocial relationships, each chapter offers an insightful examination of the social, cultural, and political interactions that humans have with water and uses these insights to provide a nuanced understanding of the challenges and issues associated with on-paper plans.
This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of water politics, water governance, political ecology, corruption and environmental economics, as well as sustainable development policymakers.

Rethinking Gender in Development Practice is about the ways in which issues of gender-including violence against women and girls, entrenched gender roles and expectations, the exclusion of non-binary genders, and the participation of disempowered genders-affect and are affected by development practice.
This volume, which pulls together papers from Development in Practice, provides accounts from researchers and practitioners working with women in countries from Africa to the Pacific. The book offers a global perspective, but with the inclusion of local voices, on the way gender can impact daily living in the Global South. This book includes groundbreaking articles by some of development studies' most well-known scholars, which are interspersed with more recent publications that address urgent issues of gender in development practice.
Targeted at development practitioners and academics from across the world, this book reveals the plight of those from the Global South who do not identify as men, and offers examples of how NGOs, targeted programs, enhanced participation in decision-making processes, and the interrogation of established discourse on gender can assist in transforming lives.

AANHPI women in the United States have often been grouped together due to their race and gender, regardless of their specific communities' diverse histories with the United States and different educational and economic opportunities. The authors argue that AANHPI women are misunderstood by health professionals and researchers, and foregrounds AANHPI women's experiences to demonstrate the challenges they face when seeking health care. The book highlights the diversity of AANHPI women by drawing on their first-hand experiences, and argues for the disaggregation of health data on AANHPI women.
Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health is of value to college classrooms that address racial disparities, health disparities, and women's experiences, as well as for health care professionals.

In examining the 424 units of the U.S. national park system, geographers Joe Weber and Selima Sultana focus attention on the historical geography of the system as well as its present distribution, covering the diversity of places under the control of the National Park Service (NPS). This includes the famous national parks such as the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Yosemite and the lesser-known national monuments, memorials, lakeshores, seashores, rivers, recreation areas, preserves, reserves, parkways, historic sites, historic parks, and a range of battlefields, as well as more than twenty additional sites not fitting into any of these categories (such as the White House).
The geographic view of The Parks Belong to the People sets it apart from others that have taken a solely historical approach. Where parks are located, what they are near, where their visitors come from, and how land use and activities are organized within parks are some of the fundamental issues discussed. The majority of units in the NPS are devoted to recreation areas or historic sites such as battlefields, archaeological sites, or sites devoted to a specific person, and this is reflected in the authors' approach.
What we think of as a national park has changed over the years and will continue to change. Weber and Sultana emphasize changing social and political environments in which NPS units were created and the roles they serve, such as protecting scenery, providing wildlife habitats, preserving history, and serving as scientific laboratories and places for outdoor recreation. The authors also focus on parks as public facilities and sites of economic activities. National parks were created by people for people to enjoy, at great cost and with great benefit. They cannot be understood without taking this human context into account.

Examining how a civilian organization used the Civil War to advance their religious mission
Tabernacles in the Wilderness discusses the work of the United States Christian Commission (USCC), a civilian relief agency established by northern evangelical Protestants to minister to Union troops during the American Civil War. USCC workers saw in the Civil War not only a wrathful judgment from God for the sins of the nation but an unparalleled opportunity to save the souls of US citizens and perfect the nation. Thus, the workers set about proselytizing and distributing material aid to Union soldiers with undaunted and righteous zeal.
Whether handing out religious literature, leading prayer meetings, preaching sermons, mending uniforms, drawing up tailored diets for sick men, or bearing witness to deathbed scenes, USCC workers improvised and enacted a holistic lived theology that emphasized the link between the body and soul.
Making extensive use of previously neglected archival material-most notably the reports, diaries, and correspondence of the volunteer delegates who performed this ministry on the battlefront-Rachel Williams explores the proselytizing methods employed by the USCC, the problems encountered in their application, and the ideological and theological underpinnings of their work. Tabernacles in the Wilderness offers fascinating new insights into the role of civilians within army camps, the bureaucratization and professionalization of philanthropy during the Civil War and in the United States more broadly, and the emotional landscape and material culture of faith and worship.

From Empire to Revolution is the first biography devoted to an in-depth examination of the life and conflicted career of Sir James Wright (1716-1785). Greg Brooking uses Wright's life as a means to better understand the complex struggle for power in both colonial Georgia and the larger British Empire.
James Wright lived a transatlantic life, taking advantage of every imperial opportunity afforded him. He earned numerous important government posts and amassed an incredible fortune, totaling over GBP100,000 sterling. An England-born grandson of Sir Robert Wright, James Wright was raised in Charleston, South Carolina, following his father's appointment as the chief justice of that colony. Young James served South Carolina in a number of capacities, public and ecclesiastical, prior to his admittance to London's famed Gray's Inn to study law. Most notably, he was appointed South Carolina's attorney general and colonial agent to London prior to becoming the governor of Georgia in 1761.
Wright's long imperial career delicately balanced dual loyalties to Crown and colony and offers a new perspective on loyalism and the American Revolution. Through this lens, Greg Brooking connects several important contexts in recent early American and British scholarship, including imperial and Atlantic history, Indigenous borderlands, race and slavery, and popular politics.

The Cold War is back in the news. So is history, in the sense of past geopolitical confrontations that for a span of a few decades were thought to be largely decoupled from present-day political developments. Of course, such reflexive reactions lack nuance and, until the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, tended to refer more to tensions between the United States and China. We should neither see Russia's aggressive war in Ukraine immediately as part of a new cold war-though it could certainly become one of its foundation pieces-nor define history simply in terms of warfare and conflict. Yet such history has great appeal in efforts to understand the dizzying and depressing events of recent years. For example, correspondents and commentators have likened the delivery of weapons systems, protective gear, and humanitarian aid to a beleaguered Ukraine to the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49. But relying on history as a guide may mislead as much as enlighten.
No city symbolizes the Cold War quite as Berlin does. When we think of the Cold War and of Berlin, we tend to emphasize the crises-the 1948-49 blockade and airlift, perhaps the 1953 East German workers' uprising, surely the 1958--61 crisis, during which the Berlin Wall was built-and the climactic ending of the Cold War in Europe when the wall came down. Berlin may conjure up iconic moments and tropes, from a statement attributed to Nikita Khrushchev in 1963 that Berlin was "the testicles of the West," to John F. Kennedy's insistence that all free men had to be invested in the defense of Berlin, to Ronald Reagan's exhortation to Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall." For American presidents (or presidential hopefuls), Berlin and the Brandenburg Gate have remained powerful images, even in the twenty-first century. A presence in Berlin signals strong leadership in the West, even though the proximate reasons why the West, as a political construct, emerged in the first place may be gone. In that sense, Berlin also stands for overcoming the past: first, West Berlin as the counterpoint not only to eastern communism but also to defeated fascism, and second, the new Berlin as the capital of a unified Germany and as a symbol that the West has won.

This book examines proximity as a benchmarked concept that can be deployed across a range of humanities disciplines to rethink the ways in which existences in the world are always already coexistences - and to parse the heuristic, ethical, epistemological, praxeological consequences of this recognition.
The volume:
- Brings together diverse theoretical approaches and utilizes a range of methodological instruments - conceptual, textual-analytic (whether in the realm of literary or religious studies, or theology or law), archival, digital, sociological or politological;
- Includes empirical case-studies that allow calibrated and scaled exemplifications;
- Launches forays onto unexplored conceptual terrain, or call into question hallowed truths of scholarly procedure.
The volume will be essential reading for students and early researchers in the social sciences and the humanities.

Youth, Education, and Islamic Radicalism offers groundbreaking analysis of religious intolerance and radicalization among high school and university students in modern-day Indonesia.
Indonesia is one of the most diverse countries in the world in terms of religion, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, but also in the complexity of its education system. Youth, Education, and Islamic Radicalism examines the roots of religious intolerance among young Indonesians and explores the various ways in which educated youth navigate radical ideologies amid growing religious conservatism.
The book presents nuanced explanations as to why one person becomes radicalized while another does not, calling into question the common assumption that religious radicalism is directly connected to terrorism. It problematizes the notion that the university is a significant hub, trigger, or birthplace of radicalization by asking: What makes education attractive for extremist recruitment? What shapes students' views? Under what circumstances do radicalization and deradicalization processes of educated youth take place? Youth, Education, and Islamic Radicalism identifies a constellation of factors that shape young people's views of religious diversity in Indonesia, demonstrating the ways in which they become radicalized in the first place, and how, in some cases, they deradicalize themselves.
