A timely and urgent argument for preserving the work that connects us in the age of automation
"A compelling case for valuing care as a societal good and as skilled labor."-The Nation
With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and labor-saving technologies like self-checkouts and automated factories, the future of work has never been more uncertain, and even jobs requiring high levels of human interaction are no longer safe. The Last Human Job explores the human connections that underlie our work, arguing that what people do for each other in these settings is valuable and worth preserving.
Drawing on in-depth interviews and observations with people in a broad range of professions-from physicians, teachers, and coaches to chaplains, therapists, caregivers, and hairdressers-Allison Pugh develops the concept of "connective labor," a kind of work that relies on empathy, the spontaneity of human contact, and a mutual recognition of each other's humanity. The threats to connective labor are not only those posed by advances in AI or apps; Pugh demonstrates how profit-driven campaigns imposing industrial logic shrink the time for workers to connect, enforce new priorities of data and metrics, and introduce standardized practices that hinder our ability to truly see each other. She concludes with profiles of organizations where connective labor thrives, offering practical steps for building a social architecture that works.
Vividly illustrating how connective labor enriches the lives of individuals and binds our communities together, The Last Human Job is a compelling argument for us to recognize, value, and protect humane work in an increasingly automated and disconnected world.

Our economy is much bigger than the dollar value of things we buy and sell. It depends on us-our health, our creativity, and our moral commitments. These capabilities don't have price tags but are crucial to a sustainable future. We need to acknowledge and reward the value of caring for ourselves and others, especially our children, our elderly, and those experiencing illness or disability.
From leading feminist economist Nancy Folbre, Making Care Work provides a compelling historical and economic account of care provision in the United States. Folbre traces the long and colorful history of resistance to bogus claims that only paid work "counts" and that employees in care services are always paid what they deserve. Explaining why care providers remain economically vulnerable today, she argues that more attention to the public benefits of care provision could help build the political coalitions needed to implement policies that put people first.
In this comprehensive and bold book, Folbre upends conventional economic thinking and maps a hopeful path toward a more equitable and sustainable economy.

Why does gender inequality persist in tech-even in workplaces that invest in fixing it? In Networking to Nowhere, sociologist Ethel Mickey uncovers the paradox at the heart of modern tech culture: Networking is hailed as the key to opportunity, yet it systematically works against women. Drawing on ethnographic research inside a top tech firm, Mickey reveals how "ideal" networking practices like informal referrals, after-hours schmoozing, and bro-bonding over sports reinforce old boys' clubs that exclude women and people of color. Women, encouraged to lean into formal events, conferences, and diversity programs, often find these efforts go unrewarded, networking them to nowhere.
By exposing how gendered expectations, invisible cultural codes, and even well-meaning corporate DEI programs can deepen inequality, this book offers a powerful new framework for understanding gender and organizations in the contemporary economy-and what it will take to chart a new path forward.

This book offers a unique exploration of the social and emotional impacts of working in new, flexible ways such as the increasingly popular hybrid work modes. With a specific focus on fun and play, the book is based on recent ethnographic research exploring how hybrid work has changed workplace behaviours and interactions, and how these social aspects of work are increasingly important in hybrid work. Fun and play are still happening but are occurring in new ways and forms as workers navigate fast-changing workscapes while still seeking happiness, frivolity, and laughter in their work relationships. The book presents current debates on these topics along with rich organisational (observed) examples, online chat, and interview excerpts from a variety of workers and managers.

Globally, 2 billion workers are in precarious informal jobs without protection. The Nordic Model privileges co-determination and worker participation in employment relations which can foreclose precarity and the absence of protection. However, the growth of digitalization and algorithmic governance within the workplace raises questions about labour process, worker agency, co-determination, governance, power, surveillance, control, and representation in all parts of the world, including the Nordic countries. This interdisciplinary edited collection offers a unique combination of macro level and micro level analyses of digitalization, algorithmic governance and workplace democracy in the context of Nordic labour markets.
Including studies from the finance industry, hospitals, higher education, police, and journalism, this collection teases out similarities and differences across labour markets and employment sectors and seeks to reflect nuances in terms of worker autonomy and agency, transformation of professional discretion, modes of resistance, representation and co-determination, and employment relations. It will be of great importance to the scholars and students of labour studies, workplace governance, HRM and the sociology of work.

Retelling the story of the working class over the last forty years - from Thatcher's war against the unions to New Labour neoliberalism - Marvin shows how power and capital have combined to shatter a radical identity into many parts: white, male, northerner, homeowner, immigrant, unemployed, disabled. These fragments are then set in conflict against each other. Blending political analysis with an account of his own experiences of class in London and the rustbelt Midlands, Marvin shows how the working class have been demonised and man-aged into impotence.
The working class is more than just an identity. As Marvin argues, it embodies a collective will to demand change, one that can - and must - be rekindled.

Based on the experiences of workers, this book analyzes the reasons behind the unexpected growth of the 'great resignation' and demonstrates how resigning today not only prevents exploitative conditions from deteriorating our health and relationships, but also allows us to reclaim time for ourselves and our lives.
We have always been told that work defines us, and serves as the foundation of our dignity as human beings. So why, all over the world, are more and more people quitting their jobs? In recent years, we have had several opportunities to ask ourselves whether the life we are living is the one we truly desire. For many, the answer has been no. This is due to a growing unwillingness to submit to the toxic and vexatious rules imposed by many work contexts. Even prior to the pandemic, a survey conducted in 140 countries revealed that 80 percent of the employed population disliked their jobs. And so, after months of reflection on quality of life, many exhausted, exasperated, and financially strained individuals have organized to collectively resign from their jobs in various sectors such as catering, healthcare, retail, culture, and others, shaping what has been termed the 'great resignation' phenomenon.
Francesca Coin offers insights from extensive fieldwork, including surveys and in-depth interviews with 200 workers who have resigned across various sectors such as healthcare, retail, catering, and publishing. Featuring topics such as burnout, gender and essential workers, Coin examines the phenomenon from a global viewpoint, featuring case studies from Italy, China and the US.

Contributing authors present empirical findings from research conducted in a variety of contexts, exploring the struggles and opportunities of different groups of migrant workers: from female nurses in India to workers impacted by the dormitory regimes and remote platform work in Eastern and Southern Europe. They advocate for a more inclusive definition of reproductive labour, highlighting how states and employers manage mobility at work while foregrounding migrants' everyday strategies - both collective and individual - of survival, resistance, and care. Concluding with a postface written by eminent luminaries of the field, Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson, this book demonstrates that social reproduction is critical to a transnational future of emancipation, liberation and social justice.
Migration and Social Reproduction is a valuable resource for scholars and students in the field of social science, namely sociology, social policy, politics, migration studies, and race studies. The empirical research presented in this book will also be of great benefit to policy researchers and practitioners.

Across the world, millions of workers exhaust themselves in billions of hours of free labour. As app-based gig work becomes increasingly common, ex-ploitation grows more sophisticated and harder to detect.
It doesn't have to be this way. Blending personal stories with a fresh, accessible take, Unpaid traces the long history of wage theft and reveals how employers continue to get away with it. Matthew Cole shows that wage theft is not just about broken laws but about the nature of property itself. He makes a powerful case for our collective right to reassert our labour-power.

Leading and emerging scholars illustrate how geographical contexts influence worker activity, including exploring how mass labour movements are adapting to emerging economic landscapes, how industrial and service sector workers are responding to new spatial realities they face, how workers are adapting to and challenging labour market precarity, as well as how workers interact with the environment. Detailed international case studies include examining autoworkers' strikes in South China, Polish migrant workers' experiences in Northern Ireland, Australian mineworkers' struggles and issues of space and gender in home-based work in India. The Handbook also introspectively reflects upon how the transformation of universities due to market pressures is reshaping labour geographers' research and the spaces in which they work.
Students and scholars of labour economics, employment studies and political and economic geography will greatly benefit from this incisive Handbook. Interdisciplinary in scope, it is also an essential resource for academics in political science, international relations, migration studies and environmental studies.

- Detailed, non-seasonally adjusted industry data organized by month and year
- Ranking of the seventy-five largest MSAs
- Concise technical notes
- A comprehensive appendix
The employment, hours, and earnings data in this publication provide a detailed and timely picture of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and the nation's seventy-five largest MSAs. These data can be used to analyze key factors affecting state and local economies and to compare national cyclical trends to local-level economic activity.
This reference is an excellent source of information for analysts in both the public and private sectors. Readers who are involved in public policy can use these data to determine the health of the economy, to clearly identify which sectors are growing and which are declining, and to determine the need for federal assistance. State and local jurisdictions can use the data to determine the need for services, including training and unemployment assistance, and for planning and budgetary purposes. In addition, the data can be used to forecast tax revenue. In private industry, the data can be used by business owners to compare their business to the economy as a whole and to identify suitable areas when making decisions about plant locations, wholesale and retail trade outlets, and locating a particular sector base.

This book examines "uberization" "from below", by focusing on three major cities (Paris, London and Montreal) and on the individual situations of Uber drivers, to analyse the deployment of "racial platform capitalism". Racialized men are over-represented among Uber drivers and the book argues that this is no coincidence; the platform exploits their relegation to a subordinate material and symbolic position within the social order to gain access to the labour reserve it needs to operate. At the same time, this essential but unwanted labour force must accept the degraded working and employment conditions offered. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of the sociology of work and the platform economy.

This book focuses on the unequal power dynamics embedded in technological change. Offering critical and international perspectives on labor and communication, the book demonstrates how the adoption and implementation of technologies are political processes shaped by economic incentives, worker organizing and state intervention. The book reviews how contemporary technologies like algorithms and artificial intelligence are deepening worker precarity, fragmenting labor movements and reinforcing echo chambers. Yet, it also highlights how workers have leveraged various communication technologies-past and present-to reclaim their agency during moments of disruption.

This Open Access book explores the contemporary socio-economic challenges that European non-urban areas face, illuminating how collaborative workspaces (CWS) contribute to tackling them in multiple ways. Collaborative workspaces (such as coworking spaces, fab labs, creative hubs, etc.) for freelancers, self-employed, remote workers and start-ups are increasingly becoming a subject of local and regional economic development policies as they are considered important intermediaries that help deliver entrepreneurial development and local innovation agendas. There has also been a rise in CWS in less densely populated communities in rural and peripheral regions across the European Union that face particular challenges such as brain drain, low investment levels, and low levels of entrepreneurship. These non-urban CWS differ in terms of scopes, functions and impacts compared to those in urban centers. The contributions in this volume unpack the development processes of CWS in rural, suburban, remote and peripheral areas, their wider economic, social and community impacts at the local and regional level, as well as at the level of the individual worker and the enterprise. The book brings together contributions from a broad range of scientific disciplines, including social and economic geography, economics, business studies, architecture, planning, gender studies, and management studies.

This book provides an in-depth exploration of the evolving trends in South-South international migration to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. It presents a comprehensive analysis of migration dynamics from the perspectives of nationals, non-nationals, policymakers, and prospective migrants. It highlights the multifaceted factors driving migration to the Gulf, including the transition from oil-dependent economies to knowledge-based industries and the shift from a reliance on low-wage migrant workers to the integration of highly skilled expatriates. It emphasizes the Gulf states as strategic destinations for the Arab and Asian middle classes, shaped by global dynamics such as the gig economy, cultural compatibility, and socio-economic instability in migrants' countries of origin.
Furthermore, the book offers a critical assessment of migration policies, focusing particularly on the inadequacies in safeguarding low-paid migrants, while challenging the prevailing notion that migration to the Gulf is temporary and primarily economically driven. Through an examination of new employment patterns, migration flows, and concepts of transnationalism, the book interrogates the future trajectories of Gulf societies. It is an indispensable resource for scholars interested in the region's transitions and future prospects.

This book contains an Open Access Chapter.
The UN estimates that there are approximately 476 million indigenous people around the world, and there are 1.8 million Native Americans in the USA. These individuals face recurring challenges with high rates of unemployment, poverty, unequal access to health care, low educational levels, and housing and food insecurity. They also face cultural dominance by one or more European countries, the confiscation of indigenous lands, environmental degradation, racism, higher suicide rates, shorter longevity rates, and countless indignities.
Another one of the biggest challenges facing Native Americans and indigenous people is that they often experience unfair discrimination in the employment process and exclusion from work organizations, which perpetuates their high rates of poverty. Despite these problems, there has been little or no research on Native American work issues in human resource management or related fields. Native American and Indigenous Peoples' World of Work aims to fill these research gaps. It considers the factors that affect unfair discrimination, racism, and the exclusion of indigenous people in work organizations; highlights the benefits of including indigenous people in organizations; develops a better understanding of indigenous people's work values, job choices, and reward preferences so organizations can attract and retain them; and offers directions for future research and practice on the plight of indigenous people in organizations. Along with The Dignity of Native Americans and Indigenous Peoples' Experiences at Work these volumes are unique in being the first titles on Native American or indigenous work issues, and many authors are indigenous people.

The Dignity of Native Americans and Indigenous Peoples' Experiences at Work considers the factors that affect unfair discrimination, racism, and the exclusion of indigenous people in work organizations; highlights the benefits of including indigenous people in organizations; develops a better understanding of indigenous people's work values, job choices, and reward preferences so organizations can attract and retain them; and offers directions for future research and practice on the plight of indigenous people in organizations.
Along with Native American and Indigenous Peoples' World of Work these volumes are unique in being the first titles on Native American or indigenous work issues, and many authors are indigenous people.

Technology is a transformative force that redefines how organizations operate and shapes the modern workplace. This book examines the wide-ranging impacts of digital transformation, emerging technologies, and data-driven decision-making on both individuals and organizations, offering insights into topics such as business analytics, digital maturity, and the adoption of innovations like AI and blockchain.
It explores how organizations can harness real-time data, measure key performance indicators, and adopt processes based on new technologies. The book also investigates critical issues such as knowledge retention, workplace diversity, algorithmic transparency, and the unintended consequences of technological advances on employee well-being and workplace dynamics in hybrid and AI-driven environments.
By integrating interdisciplinary frameworks, empirical research, and case studies, this book provides a comprehensive resource for academics, practitioners, and policymakers navigating the complexities of digital transformation. Based on revised versions of top double-blind peer-reviewed papers from the annual Italian Chapter of the Association for Information Systems conference, held in Piacenza, Italy, in October 2024, it offers valuable guidance for embracing technology-driven change.

The workplace has remarkably changed in the aftermath of the 2019 pandemic. The transformation is profound and is still evolving. A wave of voluntary resignations unleashed in the wake of Covid-19 negatively affected the business landscape and triggered unprecedented labor shortages. This, in turn, played well into labor unions' hands, leading in 2023 to historical gains for millions of workers across various industries. And while digital technology has enabled remote work for yet more employees than ever before, employers were hard pressed to offer their workers flexible work arrangements. Topping it all, the explosion of AI in the last two years promised to introduce an innovative revolution in our places of work and usher in a new era, albeit contentious, in the marketplace. With the new opportunities that opened up, a host of challenges surfaced, compelling company managers to consider new ways of tackling them.
The change in work behavior in the aftermath of the pandemic, coupled with a strong economy and tight labor market in some sectors, are likely to turn the workplace into a collision course between employee and employer. A reset in employer-employee relationships, perceptions, and employment arrangements is today a new must. Transformational leaders are presented with a unique opportunity to make the workplace a much healthier and happier one.
Workplace Transformations in a Post Pandemic Era: New Realities to Consider and Act Upon addresses issues that are hotly and publicly debated by practitioners in the field and by policy makers alike. Along with the challenges our places of work currently face, meaningful opportunities for change are also emerging that should not be wasted.

International treaties and regulations have flourished over the past century. But why are some states more likely to ratify international treaties than others? And does domestic politics influence international commitments?
This book seeks to answer these questions by examining the patterns and determinants of international treaty ratification in the areas of environmental and labour policy from the early twentieth century to the present. The book argues that partisan politics and interest groups play a significant role in explaining differences in international treaty ratification. It also demonstrates that the international commitments of industrialised democracies are heavily influenced by their domestic politico-economic characteristics rather than by their international linkages and interdependencies alone. These findings have important implications, as they highlight the ongoing importance of domestic constituencies in shaping international policy responses. The book will appeal to all those interested in international and comparative politics, sustainable development, and environmental and labour policy.

Over the past four decades, South Korea has undergone a remarkable process of economic development, leading to its current status as a renowned centre of innovation and cultural influence. Nevertheless, beneath this outward appearance, a pervasive and profoundly entrenched form of gender inequality pervades the labour market. This is evidenced by the country's continuous ranking at the bottom of the glass ceiling index, a publication of The Economist. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of gender inequality in the Korean labour market, with a particular emphasis on the cultural, political and social dimensions of the issue.
