The book traces long-standing societal unjust structures and transformations in South Asia to highlight persistent inequality and lost potential, with a central emphasis on gender disparities and their impact on well-being/ill-being. Focusing on recent decades marked by rapid technological change, it highlights missed opportunities, particularly the failure to invest in women. The book analyzes this neglect and its substantial social costs, examining impacts on health, education, and labor productivity through the lens of cultural norms, policies, and institutions. Beyond quantitative analysis, the book incorporates key political developments and accounts of women engaged in social activism to highlight the resilience and agency of women across the region. In doing so, it presents long-term trends and historical trajectories, while identifying critical moments of missed opportunity. Ultimately, the book conveys a clear message to social planners: women should not be treated as a standalone concern, but rather integrated at the core of all development agendas, a prerequisite for achieving inclusive and sustainable societal prosperity.

This book discusses a new theoretical understanding of gender-based discrimination. It introduces the concept of quietism- a form of discrimination that occurs in the workplace using gendered norms and values. Drawing on a sample of twenty-five Black disabled women in England with the genetically inherited condition of sickle cell, it uses a materialist feminist disability studies perspective and critical race theory to explore identity-based discrimination in work environments. Comprehensive yet accessible, this short volume explains how intersectionalities of identities become implicated in discriminations in: pregnancy, maternity and caring penalties; visible racisms; gendered access to the labour market and workplace norms; and even in the invisible anticipatory actions to be able to stay well and in employment.

The authors explore how voices of resistance to workplace discrimination are silenced through gendered attitudes, institutionally or within office cultures, such as bullying, racism, ignoring of complaints, using sexism and lookism to reduce women to their bodies, emotional manipulation, and the stereotyping of women. The final chapter problematises legal remedies for victims of quietism and guides the reader through new forms of legal protection that should be implemented, making this an invaluable read for academics and students in gender studies, disability studies, business and management, and race studies, as well as legal and HR professionals.

Humans evolved to experience work as pleasurable and continued to find it pleasurable for the first 98% of our history, often likening it to play. The negative associations we see now with "work" stem from the extreme inequality and exploitation accompanying the rise of the state 5,500 years ago. Consequently, today many people view work negatively, seeing it as a means to gain income to enable consumption as opposed to serving as a means for creativity, community, and self-fulfillment.

In Why We Must Work, Jon D. Wisman draws upon economics, philosophy, evolutionary psychology, social anthropology, and history to explore how work has been experienced and understood over the course of history. In addressing current conditions, he notes the absurdity that, while we live with unparalleled abundance, some workers suffer unemployment and most are not free in their workplaces, often being bossed about. Equally absurd, given our abundance, is the extreme inequality that results in pervasive insecurity, stress, and pessimism. Laissez-faire ideology legitimates the public policies that generate this inequality and these work conditions while depicting ever greater consumption as opposed to meaningful work as the means to greater happiness.

Wisman offers an attractive alternative vision of our future, grounded in two reforms to make work again fulfilling: guaranteed employment and workplace democracy. Guaranteed employment would provide security and eliminate poverty while providing everyone with the social and self-respect of being a productive member of society. Measures to bring about worker ownership and control of their firms would bring freedom and democracy to the workplace. Both reforms conform to cherished values while preserving capitalism's two principal institutions of private property and markets.

This book explores how low-wage labour migration policies in seven Asian economies affect millions of migrant workers. It identifies two contrasting regulatory approaches that bookend a governance spectrum, offering an original theoretical framework for understanding which policies heighten workers' vulnerability to exploitation and which improve their chances of success.

The book argues that the regulatory choice to either invest in and manage, or privatise and outsource, key labour migration governance functions has a material impact on outcomes for workers. Specifically, the data demonstrate that migrant workers in destination economies in Asia that take a government-managed approach pay lower recruitment costs, enjoy greater labour market mobility and earn higher wages as they benefit from greater labour law protections. Conversely, migrant workers in employer-managed regimes pay higher recruitment costs, have more limited labour market mobility, earn less and are more vulnerable to mistreatment at the hands of their employers. In addition to a thorough regional analysis, the book presents three case studies that examine the employer-managed approach followed by Singapore since the 1970s, the government-managed approach adopted by South Korea in 2004, and the government-managed approach pursued in Thailand including through legislative reforms implemented in 2017, and outcomes for low-wage migrant workers in all three countries. The final chapter argues that apex court judgments from these three countries reflect and reinforce their government's approach to low-wage labour migration governance.

Identifying urgently needed reforms that would materially improve outcomes for millions of low-wage migrant workers in Asia and beyond, this book will be of interest to lawmakers, migrant worker advocates and researchers of Asian migration, labour migration, labour law and socio-legal studies.

Throughout the genocide in Gaza, Israeli workers and unions have supported - and participated in - the Israeli state's exactions. In doing so, it did not deviate from historical precedent. It acted as settler labour movements have throughout the last 150 years, in Palestine and elsewhere.

Why have Israeli workers repeatedly been at the forefront of fighting for greater exclusion of Palestinians from the Israeli state and economy - even against their own bourgeoisie? Why do Israeli social and labour movements continue to systematically exclude Palestinians and their demands from their struggles? Why do they continue to support Israel's wars against the Palestinian people?

Through historical and contemporary analysis, Englert argues that this repeated pattern is not accidental but structural-rooted in Israel's character as a settler colony where Israeli workers benefit materially from Palestinian dispossession. At the heart of this, he argues, lies the fact that as Israeli workers fight their bosses for better wages and conditions, they simultaneously contest the distribution of the "colonial loot" extracted from Palestinians through land confiscation, resource exploitation, and labour subordination.

As genocide unfolds in Gaza, many liberals still hope Israeli labour and social movements might become allies of Palestinian liberation. This book demolishes that illusion.

Whistleblowing and Freedom of Expression in Working Life examines how the right to blow the whistle is regulated across various national contexts. With contributors from Europe, the United States, Australia, and Africa, the chapters focus on factors that influence how different countries design and implement their whistleblower protection laws.

The book approaches the issues from a range of academic and methodological perspectives across labour law, political science, and sociology and including comparative institutional mapping, legal analysis, qualitative interviews, and surveys. Topics include attitudes to freedom of expression, trade union involvement, regulatory agencies, enforcement mandates, handling processes and comparative studies of transpositions of the EU Whistleblowing Directive (2019/1937).

A sharp volume of social research in this increasingly important area, this work will appeal to scholars of sociology, labour studies, political science and law.

The Dialectics of Chinese Labor examines China's trade union adaptation to the changing demands of the working class. For nearly 50 years, market socialism is transforming China from a rural to an urban economy, posing significant challenges to China's trade union federation (ACFTU). The labor federation has skilfully reshaped its organizing strategies to respond to workers' new material realities. This book counters the monolithic position that devalues ACFTU by using direct evidence to reveal its commitment and determination to improve wages and working conditions across the industrial, service, digital and rural sectors of the Chinese economy.

Worker organizing has long been a cornerstone of efforts to secure fair pay, decent working conditions, and protection against the insecurities of market economies. By acting collectively, workers have historically been able to counterbalance employer power and win improvements to work and life. Yet such gains have always been partial and contested, and the settlements between labour and capital remain under constant pressure. In the wake of rapid social, political, technological, and environmental change which is reshaping work and challenging the institutions and practices that have underpinned worker collective action, this edited volume explores the evolving landscape and practices of worker organizing in the twenty-first century.

In the context of developments that have exposed the limits of existing models of worker representation and protection - from the erosion of union density in many countries, to the rise of precarious and platform-based work, to climate crisis and pandemic fallout - the chapters in this volume examine the innovative strategies, organizational forms, and solidarities that workers are forging in response to intensified inequalities and new modes of exploitation. The contributions draw on diverse theoretical perspectives and examine a range of empirical settings to shed light on the forms, dynamics, and outcomes of worker collective action in contemporary contexts.

Recentring worker organizing as a vital force in shaping a more equitable, sustainable, and democratic world of work, Worker Organizing is a timely and compelling volume for scholars of the sociology of work and labour, organizational studies, social movements, and beyond.

It is still a common assumption that labour-management relations are about trade unions, collective bargaining, and strikes. While these issues remain crucial, today's conceptual terrain is much broader. New Frontiers and Trajectories in Labour-Management Relations goes beyond a focus on the outcomes of work and employment, to elaborate how different actors' roles at multiple levels of analysis shape labour-management relationships and workplace behaviours. It explores the political economy of work and labour-management relationships by considering the role of different labour market institutions in the governance of work and employment, as well as how these institutions shape and are shaped by power and conflict in work and labour-management relationships. Approaching the subject as a broad multidisciplinary social science field, the volume features contributions from leading international experts on work, employment, and labour-management relations, encompassing thinking from economics, sociology, and law, to history, political science, and industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology. With this diversity of perspectives, the volume provides an eclectic framing of how work and employment relationships are formed and coordinated across time, space, and place.

This volume (Parts A and B) contains 16 new studies that shed light on key aspects of immigration: the drivers of immigration, the factors fostering or hindering immigrant integration in the host country, and the impact of immigration in the host countries. The studies span a wide range of countries in Europe, North and South America and use novel administrative, regional and survey data to offer insights into historical and contemporary episodes of migration. Together, they enrich our understanding of the determinants and consequences of migration and provide an evidence base for policy discussions.

The volume covers three broad themes. In both Part A and B are eight papers on the integration of immigrants in the host society, focusing on the acquisition of human capital, labor supply, family formation, and returns to skills. Part B also studies the impact of immigration on outcomes that often dominate the public debate, namely employment, education, and crime. Published twice per year in conjunction with the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) Research in Labor Economics contains new cutting edge peer reviewed research applying economic theory and econometrics to policy related topics pertinent to worker well-being often with an international focus.

This book examines the relationship between Indian business and economic development. The relationship, mediated by the state, is explored through the lens of business sectors to identify how they contribute to the different facets of economic development such as growth, exports, economic diversification, technology, and especially employment. Written in an accessible way, it surveys a range of industries and business sectors as part of India's quest for economic development as a late industrializer. Most of these business sectors generate development in some form, including some newer sectors such as e-commerce, digitalization, and green energy. However, critical as they might be for the foundation of a vibrant, modern economy, they are shown to be inadequate to make a dent in India's massive surplus labour. The paradox is that India's economy recently has been growing rapidly but has been unable to create enough decent jobs. Every year approximately 16 million new jobs must be created to absorb just the new workers that enter the labour force. Roughly 90% of employment is currently in precarious, low-wage or self-employment jobs in the informal sector that receive practically no social protection. This grim reality is a complex outcome of a structural stalemate that has resulted from the coexistence of low-productivity agriculture, premature deindustrialization, and a vast, persistent informal sector. This three-legged structural deadlock is attributed to India's late capitalist experience, or "compressed capitalism," which is a product of institutional legacies, policy choices, and external conditions. In the context of a massive workforce looking for jobs in an impoverished economy with a dysfunctional state-business nexus, creating such a large number of decent jobs is a herculean task. Today, the changing external environment with new technologies and artificial intelligence, competition from China and other parts of Asia, and unanticipated American tariff threats and visa restrictions for high-value service providers have further compounded India's jobs dilemma in the twenty-first century. Tackling the employment challenge will require a fundamental rethinking of strategies to boost the domestic market with demand-side policies while smartly adjusting to the uncertainties of the international economic and political environment.

This book examines the determinants of immigration policy for workers in low-skilled jobs (LILSO) in democratic states. It moves beyond conventional economic explanations of migration policy and explores the complex interplay of political, historical, institutional, and social factors that shape labor immigration regulations. Key themes include: * The role of institutions and historical contexts in shaping long-term migration policy trends. * The political and social conditions that lead to policy changes beyond economic drivers. * The interaction between stable institutional frameworks and short-term political and societal shifts. Methodologically, it employs Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), a case-oriented approach that allows for the identification of complex causal patterns and multiple pathways leading to similar policy outcomes. By studying nearly 30 democratic countries and over 80 immigration policy reforms between 1990 and 2019, the book presents a comparative analysis of migration regulation types and the policy shifts that occur under different economic and political conditions.

Bridging theory and empirical analysis, this book offers a comprehensive and data-driven exploration of urban-rural labour markets across advanced economies, shedding light on their structure, efficiency, and evolving dynamics.

Through an extensive literature review and comparative statistical analysis, the book examines key indicators such as labour force participation, unemployment, productivity, and wages. It highlights regional disparities and convergence trends in advanced economies, while emphasizing the critical role of entrepreneurship in balancing labour supply and demand-exploring both Schumpeterian innovation and necessity-driven enterprise.

A standout feature is a unique empirical study using Eurofound data, which investigates whether living in rural areas increases the likelihood of becoming an entrepreneur-offering valuable insights into the potential for rural-urban convergence.

Concluding with forward-looking reflections and directions for future research, this volume is essential reading for scholars and students in economics, geography, sociology, and planning. It also serves as a vital resource for policymakers, regional planners, and practitioners engaged in shaping the future of spatial labour markets.

Based on years of ethnographic research in rural Kansas, Crafting Dignity is an eye-opening look at why Latin American immigrants came to work on dairy farms in the Heartland and how their presence is transforming both the industry and their local communities.

Immigrants in the United States are overrepresented among essential workers in agro-food production. In the dairy industry alone, immigrants constitute 51 percent of the labor force and produce 80 percent of the country's milk. Whereas most food production in the United States today is controlled by large corporations, at least 97 percent of US dairy farms are family owned and operated. Based on five years of ethnographic research in "Dairy City," Kansas, Alisa Garni tells the story of people who traded suits and office jobs abroad for dangerous work on US dairy farms, the white dairy farmers who rely on them to keep their family-owned operations afloat, and the rural communities that were dying before recent immigrants arrived.

Crafting Dignity follows immigrant employees from three competing family dairy farms in rural Kansas and examines how labor relations on each farm affect people's settlement experiences in Dairy City, as well as their impact on the local community. In detailing how people's work lives are woven into the broader social fabric of rural America, Crafting Dignity sheds fresh light on how managers' labor practices interact with social, political, and historical forces to impact the viability of farms and communities.

In an era of increased political anxiety about immigration and migrant labor, Crafting Dignity shows what life is really like for these workers and how more just labor practices foster a better life-not only for the laborers but for the community as a whole.

Moving beyond a focus on individual agency, this collection explores how multiple stakeholders and societal and institutional forces shape lives and identities. Leading scholars interrogate the complexities of working life, addressing themes such as changes in contemporary labor markets and radical transformations driven by AI, socio-political shifts, and increasingly volatile and uncertain environmental conditions.

Contributing authors discuss a range of concepts and provocative ideas, and offer guided career practice and interventions. The chapters demonstrate how individuals, organizations, and other stakeholders, including family and friends, can shape vocational behavior and foster or endanger individual career sustainability. Drawing on diverse epistemologies and methodologies, they investigate contemporary challenges, such as work precarity and global migration, through socio-economic, political, and decolonial lenses. The Handbook proposes new research directions that embrace global disruption and a social justice agenda, acting as a reference point for theoretically diverse, relevant, and socially responsible approaches to vocational behavior.

This Research Handbook is an invaluable reference for students and scholars across the social sciences, particularly those seeking multi- and trans-disciplinary perspectives on vocational behavior. It is a must-have for vocational and career psychologists and counselors, HR professionals, and policymakers who want to increase their knowledge of today's challenges in the world of work and careers.

The last two decades have been marked by economic and social turmoil - from the global financial crash and the austerity turn to the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by cost-of-living crises, geopolitical conflicts and heightened political divisions. This succession of crises has destabilised economic and political systems and risks undermining the hard-won, albeit slow, progress towards gender equality in contemporary societies. At the same time, the way we live and work is being challenged by rapidly developing AI and digital technologies, the imperative to accelerate the transition to net zero emissions, and unresolved pressures to transform care systems to support women's sustained participation in waged work. Against this backdrop, this volume offers a long-term perspective on turbulence, grounded on comparative and country evidence from Europe, the USA, Australia, and the Global South. The chapters trace how acute shocks, chronic crises and systemic transformations reverberate through labour markets, households and state policies, reshaping gender inequalities and vulnerabilities and their intersections. The concluding discussion argues that turmoil is evolving into a polycrisis - an entanglement of economic, social, and ecological disruptions - while exposing a critical but neglected dimension of turbulence: the crisis of social reproduction and women's pivotal role in managing the tensions between production and the social reproduction spheres. By introducing a gender perspective into the polycrisis debate, this volume speaks to scholars in socioeconomics and gender studies; policy experts and advisors on gender equality; and activists, educators and the general public seeking to understand and address the challenges to gender equality in turbulent times.

What role can and should the working class play under 21st century global capitalism? The scholars contained in this work approach questions regarding the place of labor in a variety of forms under neoliberal capitalism. These chapters examine labor as political and social movements, both in and out of power, in the UK and Greece (amongst others), as well as the ramifications of global capitalism for workers themselves places as disparate as Haiti and the United States. While critiquing what has failed, each offers a vision for what working class solidarity could accomplish, and more importantly how to get there.

Through in-depth case studies, this collection assesses the efficacy of home care policies for delivering decent work and workers' rights. Together, authors reach across the Atlantic, heeding the call for perspectives beyond the North to study border-transcending dynamics and interdependencies. The lens of the pandemic reveals why care systems proved so inadequate for mitigating the contagion and why some countries fared better than others. Broadening the focus through international comparisons inform lessons in the medium and long-term and can provide a better understanding of systemic vulnerabilities and capacities for ensuring resilience and positive outcomes before, during, and after disasters.

Indian and South African Labor Responses to the International Labor Organization's Green Initiatives: Through the Eyes of the Colonized explores the differences in attitudes of developing states to the International Labor Organization (ILO) green initiatives, such as sustainable development, green jobs, and just transition, through a comparative case study of India and South Africa. As noble and urgent as they seem, not all countries are on board with green initiatives. Some developing states are wary on the grounds that they continue the interventionist legacies of their colonizers. India is one of these countries less open to these initiatives, in contrast to South Africa, which has embedded the initiatives in their green labor programs. This book shows how postcolonial theories such as Said's Orientalism and Bhabha's mimicry can be helpful in making sense of these discrepancies in attitudes. By providing a comparative study of these two powerful BRICS countries, it fills an important gap in our understanding of postcolonial responses of developing states, and expands the fields of comparative politics, history, postcolonial studies, and environmental policies. The book concludes by exploring the distinct ways in which India resists these green initiatives and how South Africa offers resistance by mimicking Western green initiatives in their policy line-up. Indian and South African Labor Responses to the International Labor Organization's Green Initiatives: Through the Eyes Initiatives will be of great interest to students and scholars of Postcolonial Politics and History, and International Relations.

This book examines the way that migrant workers' everyday experiences are being shaped by precarious conditions in the receiving countries. Utilising a mixed methods approach, the case studies of migrant workers in Thailand and Thai migrant workers in Taiwan, South Korea and the USA from 2005-2020 are analyzed to compare the strategies used toward justice in various contexts such as labour, permanent residency, and human rights. Revealing the limitations for true economic and social integration, the author argues that precarious conditions and exclusion from legal protections are the forces that limit noncitizens' access to remedies against wage theft, labour trafficking, forced labour and related human rights violations. NGOs advocating alongside Southeast Asian migrant workers therefore exemplify how transnational labour rights are negotiated to increase state social protections for foreign nationals abroad, working in dirty, dangerous, and degrading jobs globally. Advancing the growing literature on labour migration and precarities in South East Asia and the USA, the author combines labour and anti-trafficking theories with practices utilized by NGO and trade unions to participate in setting the agenda of this interdisciplinary field of migrant precarity. The implications are therefore not just of interest to scholars of migration from and in Asia but appeals to international practitioners in trade unions and policy makers.

This book consisting of 24 chapters provides a comprehensive analysis of the complexities of women's work in India. Drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary data sources it offers fresh perspectives on long-term patterns and emerging trends. It sheds light on trends in gender equality in employment, the stubbornly low Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLFPR), the continued invisibility of women's work, and the shortcomings of official labour force surveys in capturing women's economic contributions. It also explores gendered labour market barriers linked to caregiving responsibilities, social group identities, and the high unemployment rates among educated women. Several chapters address persistent issues of discrimination and inequality, including how rising educational attainment among women has shaped labour market outcomes.

It critically assesses the growing sectors of childcare and gig work, often viewed as potential pathways to better-paid employment for women, highlighting both their opportunities and limitations. Further, the book provides the policy measures required to enhance women's labour participation; challenges specific to urban contexts and key policies related to public employment and social protection for women.

This volume is a valuable resource for researchers, civil society organisations, development practitioners, and policymakers working on women's employment. It is equally relevant for educators and students in gender studies, labour economics, employment research, and development studies.

In The Business of Racism, Ian Carrillo employs a case study from Brazil's sugarcane industry to show how racial capitalism is promulgated and maintained through politics and business. As Carrillo recounts, in the mid-2000s, Brazil embarked on a state-led project to improve environmental and labor conditions in sugarcane production. He describes how, seeing increased government regulation of their worksite as a threat to their power, the elites of Brazil's sugar-ethanol industry repurposed long-standing racial ideologies to undermine progressive institutions and elevate their own leaders. Carrillo's extensive ethnographic fieldwork in mills and plantations, as well as interviews with federal labor regulators and sugar-ethanol industry elites in Brazil, weaves together an account of how Brazil's labor and environmental regulations are forged through racial and class struggles at worksites and within the state. The Business of Racism contributes to ongoing sociological debates about race, development, and the environment while highlighting future pathways for achieving racial justice, labor equality, and climate sustainability.
