This volume provides insights into EAP practitioners' identity and agency in varied contexts and field positions.
Each chapter delves into a theoretical perspective (Bourdieu's field theory, Post-humanism, Legitimation Code Theory, Symbolic Interactionism..), and a variety of methodologies, enabling different questions to be explored. Each chapter is also a window into the everyday life of practitioners as they navigate their professional lives, and the specificities of their EAP contexts, the politics and struggles over power, domination, legitimacy, status, ambition and recognition. The authors' concerns and strategies vary and show that the weight of powerful structures and collective habitus is difficult - but not impossible- to resist.
From a socio-analysis of EAP and its narratives of origins, to a discussion on Ethics in EAP and a critique of the Global South label, the reader will explore contributions from Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, the UK, and Zimbabwe.
The chapters reveal a field which is made up of a constellation of worlds, each with its own logic but importantly, a field with no centre. The studies in the chapters are likely to intrigue, inspire, but also disrupt some readers' expectations and challenge their assumptions about the field and its practitioners.

One in five students are identified as speaking English as an Additional Language (EAL) and all teachers are highly likely to be teaching multilingual students in their classrooms. As our schools become more culturally and linguistically diverse, they must respond to the needs of the students in front of them, and this book provides a range of strategies and resources to ensure teaching is adaptive and responsive so that all learners thrive and fulfil their academic potential.
At the heart of the book is developing an understanding of how languages are acquired and an awareness that all students, regardless of their current English language proficiency, need to be offered a challenging and supportive environment. Chapters offer:
- High-yielding, practical approaches and strategies to ensure that students are able to access content-appropriate lessons and simultaneously develop their language
- A plethora of resources and step-by-step examples, showcasing how explicit vocabulary and grammar learning can be context-based for the benefit of all learners
Each teacher is positioned as a language teacher, with the responsibility of planning sessions where language is not perceived as an add-on, but as an integral and pivotal part. This book will empower you as an educator and ensure that your classroom is a language-aware and stimulating environment for your students. It will be essential reading for all secondary school educators and teaching assistants who support EAL students in mainstream lessons and are responsible for producing resources and implementing classroom strategies.

The wide-ranging disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic altered the experiences of place, technology, time, and school for students. This book explores how students' responses to these extraordinary times shaped their identities as learners and writers, as well as their perceptions of education.
This book traces the voices of a diverse group of university students, from first-year to doctoral students, over the first two years of the pandemic. Students discussed the effects of having their homes forced to serve as classrooms, work, and living spaces, as they also navigated much of school and life through their digital screens. The affective and embodied experiences of this disruption and uncertainty, and the memories and narratives constructed from those experiences, challenged and remade students' relationships with place, digital media, and school itself. Understanding students' perceptions of these times has implications for imagining innovative and empathetic approaches to literacy and learning going forward.
In a time when disruptions, including but not limited to the pandemic, continue to ripple and resonate through education and culture, this book provides important insights for researchers and teachers in literacy and writing studies, education, media studies, and any seeking a better understanding of students and learning in this precarious age.

This collection brings together different perspectives on post-traumatic stress, considering its causes, its impact on different groups, and ways forward toward equipping speech-language clinicians, educators, and scholars to better understand and support the individuals and communities with which they work.
The volume defines post-traumatic stress, unpacking its causes and how they might be mitigated. The 11 chapters critically reflect on the wide-ranging effects traumatic stress has on the brain, communication, language, literacy, and life skills of different groups, including children, adolescents, adults, refugees, and victims of racialized violence. This book also includes examples of interventions demonstrated to be effective with affected individuals. The range of perspectives highlights the importance of culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices and the need for language and literacy professionals to engage in transdisciplinary practice in order to develop more effective supports for those experiencing post-traumatic stress. Looking ahead, the volume discusses recommendations for curriculum content, clinical practice, and changes to policy toward ensuring all people with post-traumatic stress are able to fully participate in daily life.
This book will be of interest to students and scholars in speech-language sciences, social work, occupational therapy, and clinical psychology, as well as clinicians and educators in these areas.

This edited volume presents narratives on a range of methods for research on second language teaching and learning appropriate to the elementary, middle, and high schools (K-12). Teacher researchers in different worldwide contexts narrate their processes to explain and demonstrate practitioner research in context; contributors describe their research from exploring the rationale for the project, to designing the study, analyzing the data, and disseminating it. As such, the book illustrates how K-12 practitioners design, gather, analyze, interpret, and strategically employ data to make data-driven, evidence-based, and analysis-informed instructional, assessment, and programmatic decisions. This volume empowers teacher-researchers and allows them to envision research projects in their own classrooms. Offering new insights into the researchers' thinking processes, challenges, and solutions, and advocating teacher research for understanding learning, the teaching of language, and the development of SLA, this text will appeal to educators and researchers involved in language education, second language acquisition, TESOL, ESL/EFL/ELT, and applied linguistics.

This collection takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of gendered technology, an emerging area of inquiry that draws on a range of fields to explore how technology is designed and used in a way that reinforces or challenges gender norms and inequalities.
The volume explores different perspectives on the impact of technology on gender relations through specific cases of translation and interpreting technologies. In particular, the book considers the slow response of legal frameworks in dealing with the rise of language-based technologies, especially machine translation and large language models, and their impacts on individual and collective rights. Part I introduces the study of gendered technologies at this intersection of legal and translation and interpreting research, before moving into case studies of specific technologies. The cases explored in Parts II and III discuss the impact of interpreting and translation technologies on language professionals, language communities, and gender inequalities, while stressing the future needs of gendered technology, particularly machine translation. Taken together, the collection demonstrates the value of a cross-disciplinary approach in better understanding how language technologies can be harnessed to address discrimination and contribute to growing discussions on gender equality and social justice at the intersection of technology and translation.
This book will be of interest to scholars in translation and interpreting studies, gender studies, language technologies, and language and the law.

This book offers an in- depth study of the quasi- political, self-deprecating, and parodic buzzwords and memes prevalent in Chinese online discourse.
Combining discourse analysis with in- depth audience research among the young internet users who deploy these buzzwords in on- and offline contexts, the book explores the historical and social implications of online wordplay for sustaining or challenging the contemporary social order in China. Yanning Huang adopts a combination of media and communications, social anthropology, and socio- linguistic perspectives to shed light on various forms of agency enacted by different social groups in their embracing, negotiation of, or disengagement from online buzzwords, before addressing how the discourses of online wordplay have been co-opted by corporations and party-media.
Offering a rigorous and panoramic analysis of the politics and logics of online wordplay in contemporary China, and providing a critical and nuanced analytical framework for studying digital culture and participation in China and elsewhere, this book will be an important resource for scholars and students of media and communication studies, Internet and digital media studies, discourse analysis, Asian studies, and social anthropology.

Language, Gender, and Sexuality offers a panoramic and accessible introduction to the ways in which linguistic patterns are sensitive to social categories of gender and sexuality, as well as an overview of how speakers use language to create and display gender and sexuality. Revised to include the latest developments, this book covers discussions of trans/nonbinary/genderqueer identities, embodiment, new media, and the role of language and interaction in sexual harassment, assault, and rape.
Drawing on an international range of examples to illustrate key points, this book addresses the questions of:
* how language categorizes the gender/sexuality world in both grammar and interaction;
* how speakers display, create, and orient to gender, sexuality, and desire in interaction;
* how and why people display different ways of speaking based on their gender/sexual identities.
The second edition has been fully updated and now includes new sections on political discourse and social media, more discussion questions, and new extensive online resources with student activities and instructor materials. Aimed at students with no background in linguistics or gender studies, this book is essential reading for anyone studying language, gender, and sexuality for the first time.

Upon its original publication in 1993, Letters from Lexington reaffirmed Noam Chomsky's status as one of the most incisive critics of the American media. Reissued with a new foreword by Chomsky's long-term collaborator, radio broadcaster David Barsamian, this prescient book remains startlingly relevant in our current age of disinformation and "fake news."
Throughout the book, Chomsky critiques the media's complicity in US domestic and foreign policy. In particular, Chomsky's analyses of the politics of the Reagan and earlier Bush administrations offer illuminating perspectives on the events, key players, and policies that would continue to shape America's national agenda during the presidency of George W. Bush and the "War on Terrorism."
Letters from Lexington remains an indispensable guide to the American propaganda machine and the shibboleths of the mainstream media. As such, this book will appeal to students and scholars with an interest in the media and US domestic and foreign policy, as well as serve as a vital tool for activists and general readers seeking to question dubious narratives put forward by the mainstream media.

Natural human communication is multimodal. We pair speech with gestures, and combine writing with pictures from online messaging to comics to advertising. This richness of human communication remains unaddressed in linguistic and cognitive theories which maintain traditional amodal assumptions about language. What is needed is a new, multimodal paradigm.
This book posits a bold reorganization of the structures of language, and heralds a reconsideration of its guiding assumptions. Human expressive behaviors like speaking, signing, and drawing may seem distinct, but they decompose into similar cognitive building blocks which coalesce in emergent states from a singular multimodal communicative architecture. This cognitive model accounts for unimodal and multimodal expression across all of our modalities, providing a "grand unified theory" that incorporates insights from formal linguistics, cognitive semantics, metaphor theory, Peircean semiotics, sign language, gesture, visual language, psycholinguistics, and cognitive neuroscience. Such a perspective reconfigures how we understand linguistic structure, diversity, universals, innateness, relativity, and evolution. A Multimodal Language Faculty directly confronts centuries-old notions of language and offers a compelling reimagination of what language is and how it works.

Children's literature shapes what children learn about the world. It reflects social values, norms, and stereotypes. This book offers fresh insights into some of the key issues in fiction for children, from the representation of gender to embodied cognition and the translation of children's literature.
Connecting classic children's texts such as Alice in Wonderland with contemporary fiction including Murder Most Unladylike, the book innovatively brings together perspectives from corpus linguistics, stylistics, cognitive linguistics, literary and cultural studies, and human geography. It explores approaches to experiencing fiction, as well as methods for the study of literary texts. Childhood discourses are investigated through the materiality of texts, the spaces that literature takes up in libraries, the cultural history of fiction moulded through performances, as well as reading environments that shape childhood experiences, such as fashion and urban spaces.
Children's Literature and Childhood Discourses emphasizes the crucial link between fictional stories and real life.

This open access volume is a call for ecological awareness and action through communication. It offers perspectives on how we, as humans, posit ourselves in relation to, and as part of, the environment in both verbal and non-verbal discourse. The contributions investigate a variety of situated communicative practices and how they instantiate and potentially influence our actions.
Through the frameworks of ecolinguistics, multimodal studies and ecoliteracy, the book discusses how the environmental crisis is communicated as an urgent global and local issue in a variety of media, texts and events. The contributions present a wide range of case studies (including news articles, institutional websites, artwork installations, promotional texts, signposting, social campaigns and other), and they explore how communicative actions can help meet the challenges of ecologically-oriented change. The focus is on the impact that linguistic and multimodal communication can have on acting in, with and towards the environment seen as living ecosystems, or 'lifescapes'. The chapters offer a reflection on the way we experience, endorse, reframe and resist value systems in ecological communication, and propose alternative and healthier perspectives to respect and preserve the common and nurturing lifescapes through awareness and action.
