The twenty-first century has demonstrated that radicalism remains a vital analytical concept in the study of modern religion and politics. However, its application to earlier periods has been met with more ambivalence. This volume challenges that trend by examining religio-political subversives near the close of the Middle Ages as radical within their historical and intellectual contexts, spanning several centuries and cultures, with a focus on Central Europe. In doing so, it seeks to bridge entrenched geographical, chronological, and methodological divides, fostering broader discussions on the comparative relevance of radicalism in pre-modernity.

Matthew Paris is one of the most remarkable and renowned figures in the cultural history of medieval England. A career-monk at the influential Benedictine abbey of St Albans, Paris' creative work bears witness to the rich intellectual, artistic, social and political environment of the monasteries and their lasting impact on the wider world. His compelling accounts of recent history and the lives of legendary saints and churchmen are a distinctive and valuable guide to the emergence of the English kingdom and its place in European Christendom. His accomplished and vivid artwork brings into focus both the craft skill and visual sensibility stimulated by the medieval Church. This systematic survey, the first published for almost seventy years, brings together expert scholarship and offers fresh, interdisciplinary perspectives on Paris', his life's work as writer, artist, cartographer and maker of manuscript books, and its enduring legacy.

ISBN 978-0-674-29087-7 hard ¥7,276.- (税込) US$ 35.00
A thousand years of English history, encapsulating invasions, the rise and fall of kings, and religious eventsAmong the vernacular historical writings of early medieval England, the Old English Chronicle holds a prominent place, providing not only a backbone of English history from the fifth through the twelfth centuries but also a record of language development and geography. The seven texts in the Chronicle, known as manuscripts A through G, offer a brief year-by-year summary of important national events. The Old English Chronicle: The A-Text to 1001 is the earliest and most interesting of these manuscripts. It covers more than a thousand years, with entries written throughout the tenth century by different scribes. Although many entries are spare, noting only the death of a king or church official, others offer detailed accounts and interpretations of events such as the movement of Viking armies against King Alfred or the narrative of treachery, retribution, and loyalty widely known today as "Cynewulf and Cyneheard." In addition to the A-Text, this edition contains two highly political poems, The Death of Alfred and The Death of Edward, as well as The Battle of Maldon, a brilliant verse rendering of a defeat against Scandinavian invaders in 991.The Old English Chronicle, Volume I contains newly edited Old English texts and expert translations of key works of medieval historical writing.

Time and Governance in Fifteenth-Century Perpignan. (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought: Fourth Series) 256 pp. 2025:10 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <747-1616>
ISBN 978-1-009-60180-1 hard ¥27,170.- (税込) GB£ 95.00
In the fifteenth century, Renaissance humanists were not the only ones to think about time differently from previous generations. Time and Governance examines how and why late medieval townspeople - those who bought, sold, and manufactured for a living - reconceptualized time and applied their new understanding of it to politics and to economics. In doing so, this book reconstructs and analyses a place and time both unexpectedly familiar and deeply alien. Blending institutional history with the history of mentalities, Philip Daileader engages with issues of state building, finance, production, social conflict, national identity, and demography. He addresses the question of whether late medieval Europe deserves its often-grim reputation by recapturing and prioritizing the life experiences, thoughts, and opinions of those who lived then and there.

An Eoraip: Gaelic Ireland in Medieval and Early Modern Europe. (Later Medieval Europe 30) 348 pp. 2025:8 (Brill, NE) <747-1628>
ISBN 978-90-04-73527-9 hard ¥30,934.- (税込) EUR 129.00
Medieval and early modern Irish scholars thought of themselves as Europeans. As an expression of territorial association, this belief reflects both their familiarity with the geographical traditions of Antiquity and the integration of their society into economic, cultural, and political networks that spanned the continent. But it was also an articulation of a perceived cultural affinity often denied in modern scholarship. The chapters in this volume examine the many and various ways that Gaelic Ireland was integrated into the broader, European world, focusing on literature and learning; real-world politics, economics, and travel; and questions of identity. Contributors are: Rachel Brody, Michael Clarke, Simon Egan, Deborah Hayden, Brendan Kane, Victoria L. McAlister, Ken O Donnchu, Patricia Palmer, Brian Stone, and Patrick Wadden.

The Menologion of Basil II. (Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library) 832 pp. 2025:11 (Harvard U. Pr., US) <747-1629>
ISBN 978-0-674-29102-7 hard ¥7,276.- (税込) US$ 35.00
The Menologion of Basil II, one of the most famous manuscripts surviving from Byzantium, contains short narratives to be read during the morning office to commemorate the saint or feast of the day. Dedicated to the emperor Basil II (r. 976-1025), it is best known for its decorative program: each of the 430 entries features a large, dazzling illumination of a corresponding scene. Yet the texts have received much less attention than their illustrations, despite the wealth of information that they provide about the commemoration of the saints in Byzantine society. This unillustrated volume highlights the Menologion as a work that maps the many paths toward Christian sanctity and celebrates the people who walked them, from martyr to monk, from patriarch to prostitute, and everyone in between. The Menologion of Basil II includes both a new Greek edition, prepared from a fresh reading of the manuscript that replaces the previous eighteenth-century edition, and the first full translation into English-the first into any modern language.

Although the first thing one learns about the 'Byzantine Empire' is that it was really the eastern Roman empire, scholars have preferred to call it 'Byzantine' in a repudiation of the self-conception and emic vocabulary of the inhabitants of that polity. The terminology of 'Byzantium' artificially severs the 'medieval' eastern Roman empire from its 'classical' roots allowing for the fundamentally Eurocentric schematization of history into 'ancient,' 'medieval,' and 'Renaissance' periods. 'Byzantine' is not a benign term of art but has served a variety of political and historiographical agendas including maintaining nationalist visions of ethnic continuity, creating precedents for communism, enabling politics of nostalgia for Orthodox dominion, and constructing visions of western European superiority and masculinity that justify colonialism. By exploring these intellectual legacies of 'Byzantium,' and the benefits of conceptualizing Roman history as an unsevered whole, this Element exhorts scholars to let go of the 'Byzantine' misnomer.

ISBN 978-90-04-73548-4 hard ¥59,950.- (税込) EUR 250.00
The 11th century has traditionally been regarded as a turning point in the evolution of medieval Iberia. The dismantling of the Umayyad Caliphate of Cordoba gave way to a process of political and territorial fragmentation that contributed to weakening Islamic power vis-a-vis the incipient Northern Christian kingdoms and ultimately leading up to the establishment of the Almoravid dynasty. The Taifa Kingdoms: Reconsidering 11th-century Iberia gathers contributions from a diverse group of Medieval Historians, Arabists, Art Historians and Archaeologist seeking to explore new approaches to understand one of the most complex and fascinating moments in al-Andalus. From political history, to socio-economic organization, and artistic and scientific activities, the book covers a wide range of topics and issues from fresh perspectives. Contributors Javier Albarran, Xavier Ballestin, Amira K. Magdalena Coline: A Life Beyond Slavery in Mediterranean Europe. 240 pp. 2025:11 (Princeton U. Pr., US) <747-1641>
ISBN 978-0-691-25380-0 hard ¥7,276.- (税込) US$ 35.00
The courtroom drama that denied the legitimacy of slavery in late medieval EuropeIn 1387, a young Muslim woman from North Africa was captured on a galley in the Bay of Naples and brought to Marseille as a slave. For more than ten years, she was held in bondage to a shipwright and privateer named Peire Huguet. Daniel Lord Smail tells the extraordinary story of Magdalena Coline, a woman who dared to file suit against the man who called himself her master, and whose passage from servitude to freedom raises tantalizing questions about how the people of her time made sense of slavery as a social category. In a masterful narrative that takes readers from the waters of the Mediterranean to the court of the Angevin King Louis II, claimant to the throne of Naples, Smail describes how Peire, pressed by Magdalena's supporters, reluctantly granted her a tacit manumission through her marriage to her first husband, whose death two years later placed her in a state of considerable ambiguity. In 1406, following her second marriage to an immigrant shoemaker, a dispute with Peire exploded in the law courts of Marseille, where it played out over two tumultuous years through numerous suits and appeals. In a dramatic turn of events, Magdalena traveled to the royal court in nearby Aix-en-Provence, where she successfully petitioned the king and returned home victorious.Drawing on court records and an array of other archival sources from the period, Magdalena Coline brings these remarkable legal proceedings vividly to life, shedding new light on the ways slavery was understood and practiced in the late medieval Mediterranean world.

Medieval Bestiaries: New Approaches. (Reading Medieval Sources 9) 388 pp. 2025:8 (Brill, NE) <747-1642>
ISBN 978-90-04-42969-7 hard ¥41,965.- (税込) EUR 175.00
What could the phoenix, elephant, and spider teach medieval people, and what can they teach us now about human - animal relationships? Medieval Bestiaries: New Approaches offers innovative insights on questions previously unasked about a most popular type of illuminated manuscript, whose animal pictures and stories continue to entertain and inspire. Bringing together an impressive range of multi-disciplinary expertise, the authors provide fresh perspectives on previously unpublished or under-explored bestiary texts, images, methods of production, cross-literary influences, and moralized messaging. Most significantly, they move bestiaries out of their specialized scholarly corner into the wider world of animal-thinking across Christian, Jewish, and Islamic cultures, and stake a claim for animals as a central meeting-ground for medieval and modern sensibilities. Contributors are Emma Campbell, Marc M. Epstein, Erica Fudge, Larisa Grollemond, Rebecca Hill, Elizabeth Morrison, Julie Orlemanski, Alexandra Paddock, and Debra Higgs Strickland.

The Digital Medieval Manuscript: Material Approaches to Digital Codicology. (Studies in Art & Materiality 10) 274 pp. 2025:8 (Brill, NE) <747-1643>
ISBN 978-90-04-70573-9 hard ¥26,138.- (税込) EUR 109.00
We increasingly encounter medieval books as digital facsimiles-zooming in on high-resolution images, clicking through virtual pages, or engaging with interactive displays. But what actually happens when a parchment manuscript is translated into a digital object? How does this change affect our understanding of cultural heritage? This book explores the digital medieval manuscript as a unique cultural artifact, not just a copy of its physical counterpart. Through three case studies, it reveals how digital manuscripts function in libraries, museums, and scholarship today. Blending manuscript studies with digital humanities, it offers a fresh materialist approach to the discourse surrounding the digitisation of cultural heritage and provides a nuanced view of how it shapes the way we perceive, handle, and preserve medieval manuscripts in an increasingly digital world.

As a place of production, knowledge, and creativity, Leiden attracted people from near and far in the premodern era (c. 1200-1800). The result was a diverse population in a rapidly growing city. The contributions to this volume, written by specialists, trace key moments and developments in Leiden's history. The authors show how different groups of city dwellers experienced and shaped socio-economic and cultural events and processes. Through its thematic focus and engagement with current debates in urban history, this volume reveals how the inhabitants of a premodern European city produced and negotiated political, socio-economic, and spatial inequalities. Woodman, David,
The First King of England: AEthelstan and the Birth of a Kingdom. 344 pp. 2025:9 (Princeton U. Pr., US) <747-1646>
ISBN 978-0-691-24949-0 hard ¥7,276.- (税込) US$ 35.00
From one of today's leading historians of the early medieval period, an enthralling chronicle of AEthelstan, England's founder king whose achievements of 927 rival the Norman Conquest of 1066 in shaping Britain as we know itThe First King of England is a foundational biography of AEthelstan (d. 939), the early medieval king whose territorial conquests and shrewd statesmanship united the peoples, languages, and cultures that would come to be known as the "kingdom of the English." In this panoramic work, David Woodman blends masterful storytelling with the latest scholarship to paint a multifaceted portrait of this immensely important but neglected figure, a man celebrated in his day as much for his benevolence, piety, and love of learning as he was for his ambitious reign.Set against the backdrop of warring powers in early medieval Europe, The First King of England sheds new light on AEthelstan's early life, his spectacular military victories and the innovative way he governed his kingdom, his fostering of the church, the deft political alliances he forged with Europe's royal houses, and his death and enduring legacy. It begins with the reigns of Alfred the Great and Edward the Elder, AEthelstan's grandfather and father, describing how they consolidated and expanded the "kingdom of the Anglo-Saxons." But it was AEthelstan who would declare himself the first king of all England when, in 927, he conquered the viking kingdom at York, required the submission of a Scottish king, and secured an annual tribute from the Welsh kings.Beautifully illustrated and breathtaking in scope, The First King of England is the most comprehensive, up-to-date biography of AEthelstan available, bringing a magisterial richness of detail to the life of a consequential British monarch whose strategic and political sophistication was unprecedented for his time.
