Cundy, Paul (ed.),
Psychoanalytic Perspectives on the Israel-Gaza Conflict. 129 pp. 2026:5 (Routledge, UK) <765-845>
ISBN 978-1-041-23517-0 hard ¥44,819.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book creates a vital space for psychoanalytic thought on the Israel-Palestine conflict, one of the most polarizing and emotionally charged geopolitical struggles of our time. In the wake of the horrific events of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza, marked by death, famine, and destruction, the global community has been deeply divided. These divisions have also reverberated within the psychoanalytic profession, straining relationships between patients and clinicians, colleagues, and professional organizations. Unlike other conflicts, this struggle often leads to such extreme polarization that thought and speech are shut down by accusations of hatred or prejudice, making meaningful dialogue nearly impossible.Refusing the collusion of silence in the face of alleged war crimes and genocide, this book offers a thoughtful exploration of the psychological mechanisms underlying the conflict and our responses to it. It traces the historical contexts of the conflict, from its origins in 1948 and earlier, while examining contemporary manifestations of trauma, identity, and collective psychology. The chapters are carefully sequenced to move through themes of context, applied psychoanalytic theory, considerations of therapeutic and community interventions, personal narratives, and creative approaches to healing and reconciliation. This book is intended for a wide audience, including psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, scholars of peace and conflict studies, Middle Eastern politics and history, trauma studies, social psychology, and international relations. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

Ideal and Non-Ideal Theory. (Elements in Political Psychology) 75 pp. 2026:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <765-753>
ISBN 978-1-009-61231-9 hard ¥17,000.- (税込) GB£ 55.00
ISBN 978-1-009-61228-9 paper ¥5,563.- (税込) GB£ 18.00
This Element provides an opinionated survey of the ideal and nonideal theory debate in political philosophy. It adopts a minimal conception of ideal theory as 'theorizing that aims to characterize ideal or perfect justice' and investigates four major questions about ideal theory. First, does ideal theory provide a benchmark for evaluating what is more just than what? Second, does it provide a target for long-term reform? Third, does it provide a gauge of appropriate or permissible responses to injustice? Fourth, to what extent should we do ideal theory? The core message is that ideal theory is not uniquely or especially well suited to serving as a benchmark, target, or gauge, and it deserves no pride of place in the discipline. Nevertheless, ideal theory is somewhat valuable and we should hope it remains one active research program among many. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Breaking the Deadly Dance of Racism: Perpetrators, Targets, Allies, and Bystanders. 400 pp. 2026:5 (Wiley, US) <765-1270>
ISBN 978-1-394-31090-6 paper ¥9,684.- (税込) US$ 42.95
Break the silence and inaction that perpetuate racism in everyday life When racist incidents occur, they're too often met with silence - perpetrators remain unaware, targets feel powerless, bystanders freeze, and allies hesitate. Breaking the Deadly Dance of Racism provides a comprehensive framework for understanding how these four roles maintain racism and offers concrete intervention strategies. Drawing on decades of research, psychologists Derald W. Sue and Lisa B. Spanierman reveal the hidden scripts keeping racism thriving. The book examines unique barriers each role faces - from perpetrators' defensive reactions to targets' racial trauma to bystanders' diffusion of responsibility to allies' performative gestures. Readers discover how cultural scripts like color-blind ideology protect racism from challenge, and learn detailed microintervention strategies for making racism visible, disarming biased behavior, educating offenders, and mobilizing support. The book also offers: Evidence-based guidance for developing critical consciousness about how racism operates at individual, institutional, and cultural levelsConcrete strategies for overcoming the fear, uncertainty, and social costs that prevent people from taking anti-racist actionDetailed intervention tactics tailored to the specific challenges faced by perpetrators, targets, bystanders, and alliesPractical approaches for combating both everyday microaggressions and systemic macroaggressions in organizations and societyFoundational practices for racial socialization that help parents and educators raise antiracist children through microprotections Essential reading for educators, mental health practitioners, diversity consultants, and activists, Breaking the Deadly Dance of Racism transforms abstract commitments into actionable strategies. By revealing how silence makes us complicit and providing specific intervention tools, this book empowers readers to break the deadly dance.

Bennett, Philip,
From Communism to Work Democracy: The Social and Political Life of Wilhelm Reich. (Historical Materialism Book Series 379) 540 pp. 2026:4 (Brill, NE) <765-1386>
ISBN 978-90-04-75670-0 hard ¥42,416.- (税込) EUR 160.00
From Communism to Work Democracy is the first book devoted solely to Wilhelm Reich's social and political thought and activities. It is an intellectual history tracing Reich's evolution from a 1920s-style communism to work democracy, a form of anarchism, all shaped by his understanding of Marxism. 'Communism' refers to the radical social policies adopted in the Soviet Union following the Russian Revolution, and to the political parties in both Austria and Germany to which Reich belonged (1927-33). Expelled from the Comintern in December 1933, by late 1936 Reich came to treat 'Communism' as synonymous with Stalinism. His later 'anti-Communism' was a critique of the Soviet Union as described in The Mass Psychology of Fascism (1946). In the 1950s he underwent a criminal prosecution by the United States' government, leading to the burning of his books and his death in prison.

This includes recognising the impact of systemic oppression on health outcomes and advocating for policies that address health disparities of diverse populations in order to tailor interventions to meet their specific needs. Lacan, Jacques,
The Logic of Fantasy: The Seminar of Jacques Lacan. Book XIV. Ed. by J.-A. Miller. Tr. by A. Price. 352 pp. 2026:3 (Polity Pr., UK) <765-1395>
ISBN 978-1-5095-6134-6 hard ¥10,147.- (税込) US$ 45.00
'Logic of the fantasy': the expression recurs throughout the Seminar as a leitmotif, yet not a single lesson is devoted to it; not even a briefly sustained development. Does this mean that the logic of the fantasy is here playing the role of some new-fangled mirage? No it doesn't, not if we can take on board how this logic is the very site at which Lacan's comments converge, which is what I have sought to indicate by entitling the final chapter 'The axiom of the fantasy'.It begins with him audaciously blending the mathematical Klein group and the Cartesian cogito, modified in such a way as to offer up the alternative, 'Either I am not, or I am not thinking'. On this basis, Lacan summarises the course of an analysis in four phases.A further mathematico-psychoanalytic blend: the sexual act is illuminated by the light of the Golden number. What ensues is that 'there is no sexual act', this being the first trace of what was to become a pons asinorum: 'there is no sexual relating'.The reader will also come across the invention of a 'value of jouissance', inspired by Marx, and will be surprised to see the big Other, the 'locus of speech', being newly defined as 'the body', the primordial locus of writing.A good many other gripping insights and constructions await this reader, if he is minded to follow the meandering, the stalling and the about-turns, along with advances and flashes of brilliance, an obstinate and profoundly honest thinking that, whenever it comes up against a stumbling block, never skirts around it but endeavours to turn it into a cornerstone.

Liberation Psychology and Refusal: Confronting Capitalist Alienation, Ideology, and Nature. (Concepts for Critical Psychology) 144 pp. 2026:5 (Routledge, UK) <765-1397>
ISBN 978-1-041-04536-6 hard ¥44,819.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

To refuse is to assume a stance against that which is. We take up refusal when we push back, disinvest, ignore, and move away from. Although we tend to acknowledge the political character of refusal, the psychological character of our struggles to refuse is often not given requisite attention. Neglecting to grapple with refusal's psychological components can, however, have fracturing, detrimental effects on our political struggles. This book considers what it might mean to wield psychology for purposes of refusal - a rather complicated task when we consider that most of psychology has sought to pathologise, manage, or individualise refusal. The book grapples with three anti-capitalist refusals that have been advanced in the liberation psychology tradition, namely: de-alienation, de-ideologisation, and de-naturalisation. Each of these refusals is fleshed out with a reflection on a practical example from the author's community-engaged work in South Africa. Thus, the book seeks to demonstrate how we might put refusal's conceptual components into practice. In this, readers are offered a set of praxis-oriented modalities through which to honour refusal within the liberation psychology paradigm. The book is intended for academics, educators, psychological practitioners, and students interested in drawing from critical, anti-capitalist traditions within psychology and perhaps, also, outside of psychology.

In this illuminating and informative book, Daniel Shaw provides a succinct and highly accessible introduction to his concept of Traumatic Narcissism, describing the psychology of the traumatizing narcissist and the impact of their behaviour on victims.Distinguishing the Traumatic Narcissism Theory (TNT) from other dominant psychoanalytic theories of narcissism, Shaw begins by retelling the ancient myth of Narcissus with an emphasis on the character of Echo, the victim of Narcissus' cruelty. Acknowledging the seminal contributions of Sigmund Freud and highlighting the work of Otto Kernberg and Heinz Kohut, Shaw clarifies that, rather than treating narcissistic personality disorders, TNT is intended for the therapeutic healing and recovery of victims of narcissistic abuse. Shaw highlights the impact of a wide range of thinkers on the development of TNT, from Erich Fromm to the relational analysts and contemporary traumatologists. Emphasizing the clinical utility of the traumatic narcissism concepts, Shaw integrates both theoretical and clinical material to show how TNT enables victims to recover their wounded subjectivity and heal the self-alienation that results from the traumatizing narcissist's manipulation and abuse. This book is a vital resource for clinicians working with victims of narcissistic abuse, for those conducting psychoanalytic and trauma training programmes and for the wider public interested in the impact of narcissistic abuse and exploitation.

Smithson, Michael,
The Psychology of Ignorance. 336 pp. 2026:5 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <765-1405>
ISBN 978-0-19-896060-7 hard ¥32,146.- (税込) GB£ 104.00
Historically, the psychology of ignorance has been under-explored, despite being a topic of great importance to anyone wishing to understand human behaviour. In this volume, Smithson develops foundations for a psychology of ignorance by providing an extensive and critical account of what psychology has to say about ignorance. The book's scope includes the nature and causes of ignorance, when and why we attribute ignorance to ourselves or to others, how we feel, think, and behave when we are aware of our ignorance, when and why we choose to be ignorant, and how and why we impose ignorance on one another. Its primary goals are making psychology's implicit treatments of ignorance explicit, identifying missing connections within psychology on this topic as well as connections with other disciplines, and rebalancing psychology's largely negative orientation towards ignorance. As well as focusing on the nature of ignorance and its neglect as a research topic by psychology, the book examines varieties of dysfunctional ignorance and their relations with psychological disorders, investigates decision making under various kinds of ignorance and uncertainty, and explores how and why we create and impose ignorance on each other through indirection, secrecy, lies, and censoring.

Soreanu, Raluca,
The Psychic Life of Fragments: On Splitting and the Experience of Time in Psychoanalysis. (Relational Perspectives Book Series) 240 pp. 2026:4 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2026:5 <765-1406>
ISBN 978-1-032-71591-9 hard ¥46,365.- (税込) GB£ 150.00
ISBN 978-1-032-71589-6 paper ¥10,815.- (税込) GB£ 34.99
The Psychic Life of Fragments rethinks trauma and psychic fragmentation starting from the psychoanalytic clinic. What does it mean to work with fragments in psychoanalysis? What is the psychic life of fragments? And what can a fragment do? Raluca Soreanu writes about trauma, fragmentation and the radical plasticity of the psyche. Reconstructing Sandor Ferenczi's trauma theory, she articulates an original vocabulary of fractures, splits, atomisations, pulverisations, leakages, detritus and psychic dematerialisation along with new formations, protective membranes, expansions, contagions and growths. She approaches the scene of trauma from new angles, paying attention to oblique lines and asymmetric encounters. Mobilizing clinical and literary vignettes, this book further argues for a minor psychoanalysis, one that emerges at the intersection of four types of theoretical-clinical experimentation: a psychoanalysis of scars, a psychoanalysis of organs, an eventful psychoanalysis and a blue psychoanalysis. This book is important for clinicians and trainees in psychoanalysis, for mental health practitioners working with trauma, and for psychosocial and psychoanalytic thinkers. It is written to be used, between the psychoanalytic chair and the couch, especially at challenging times, in the transference and in the world.

Existential-Psychoanalytic Reflections on Belief and Being offers an exploration of faith not as dogma but as a psychoanalytic and existential phenomenon.Drawing from existential phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and theology, Brent Potter examines how individuals navigate despair, loss, and meaning-making today. This book engages deeply with thinkers such as Freud, Jung, Heidegger, Winnicott, Bion, Eigen, Tolkien, and Michael Heiser, weaving together clinical insights and philosophical reflection to offer an integrative approach to faith and human existence. This book argues that faith is not a belief in propositions but a form of lived trust. It is an ethical and emotional disposition that endures in the face of ambiguity. This book also explores the meaning and experience of faith in a world marked by psychological fragmentation, cultural upheaval, and existential crises.Existential-Psychoanalytic Reflections on Belief and Being will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and pastoral counsellors, as well as academics and scholars of theology, philosophy, existential psychology, and spirituality.
