Gonzalez Rey, Fernando / Martinez, Albertina Mitjans, Subjectivity: Theory, Epistemology and Method. (Contemporary Perspectives on Subjectivity) 8 pp. 2025:11 (Springer, GW) <760-931>
ISBN 978-3-032-07825-4 hard ¥36,186.- (税込) EUR 139.99

This book is a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical, methodological and epistemological aspects of the Theory of Subjectivity created by Fernando Gonzalez Rey (1949-2019). After the publication of the book Epistemologia Cualitativa y Subjetividad [Qualitative Epistemology and Subjectivity] by Fernando Gonzalez Rey in 1997, which marked the beginning of efforts to incorporate the topic of subjectivity from a cultural-historical perspective, research grounded in this approach has multiplied. This book aims to highlight the development of the Theory of Subjectivity since its initial formulation and to further deepen and clarify the relationship between the Theory of Subjectivity, Qualitative Epistemology, and the Constructive-Interpretive Methodology. This volume also intends to delve deeper, in a didactic way, into the process of constructing information from the perspective of the Theory of Subjectivity. To this end, it discusses the results of studies based on this framework with the aim of delving into this complex process of theoretical construction in research, overcoming the idea of 'empirical research' so widespread in the empirical-instrumental paradigm. Rejecting the logic of data collection as the accumulation of fragments, the authors emphasize the research as a theoretical construction, in which dialogue constitutes a subjective and relational space. In this space, participants and researchers become agents whose singular productions make possible the emergence of information relevant to the purpose of the research. The theoretical model emerges as the living core of research, constantly constituted by new indicators, hypotheses, and constructions that integrate empirical expressions with conceptual elaboration. This is an English edition of a book originally published in Portuguese. The translation of the original manuscript into English was done with the help of artificial intelligence. The technical and stylistic revision was carried out by the specialists Daniel Magalhaes Goulart, Jose Fernando Patino Torres, and Bruno Reis Bernardo Cobucci.

Hughes, Brian M., Psychology's Quiet Conservatism: How a Supposedly Woke Science Promotes Capitalism and Protects Privilege. 372 pp. 2025:10 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <760-937>
ISBN 978-3-032-07723-3 paper ¥7,234.- (税込) EUR 27.99

What if psychology isn't as liberal as we think? Psychology is often seen as a progressive discipline - a champion of social justice, diversity, and liberal values. But this provocative book challenges that assumption. It argues that psychology, from its historical entanglements with eugenics and colonialism to its modern-day focus on individualism, has long served to reinforce the status quo. Even as many psychologists identify as politically liberal, the field's methods, theories, and institutions often promote a worldview that downplays inequality, pathologizes dissent, and resists structural change. Psychology's emphasis on personal responsibility, resilience, and self-help frequently aligns more closely with conservative ideals than with progressive ones. This book explores how the myth of a "liberal bias" in psychology has been weaponised in today's culture wars - and how it distracts from the field's real political blind spots. It asks: what would it mean for psychology to truly live up to its promise of promoting human welfare? Accessible, deeply researched, and sharply argued, Psychology's Quiet Conservatism is essential reading for anyone interested in how science shapes society - and how society shapes science.

Ivcevic, Zorana (ed.), Creators: What Makes Individuals Creative. (The Seven C's of Creativity) 203 pp. 2026:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <760-939>
ISBN 978-3-032-09174-1 hard ¥38,771.- (税込) EUR 149.99

This book asks what are key psychological attributes of creative individuals, from personality to cognitive abilities to motivation and values, to their self and identity development, and to mental health and well-being. Through nine chapters, leading scholars review existing research and discuss where the new science of creativity is heading. The book goes beyond description of creators in terms of broad personality traits and engages with the ongoing debates in creativity scholarship about domain generality vs. specificity, levels of creativity, and nature of creativity as a transformative power for good vs. dark and harmful creativity. Contributions addressing how creators see themselves, how they think, and what drives them are brought together to formulate a new model of the creative person. Using a systems approach to personality psychology as theoretical framework, this book shows how a more nuanced description of the creative person can support the development of creative individuals.

Vu, Thu Trang / Vu, Dung / Nguyen, Thi Mai Lan (eds.), Emotions in Cross-Cultural Psychology: A Curated Literature Overview. 10 pp. 2025:11 (Springer, GW) <760-946>
ISBN 978-3-032-08926-7 paper ¥23,261.- (税込) EUR 89.99

This book presents a Curated Literature Overview of emotion research in cross-cultural psychology based on machine-generated auto-summaries of articles published in Springer Nature journals. The auto-summaries have been generated by a recursive clustering algorithm via the Dimensions Auto-summarizer by Digital Science handled by Subject Matter Experts and the editors of this book. The editors of this book selected which SN content should be auto-summarized and decided its order of appearance. Please be aware that these are abstractive auto-summaries, which consist of original sentences, but are not representative of its original paper, since we do not show the full length of the publication. Please note that only published SN content is represented here, and that curated books are still at an experimental stage. Papers summarized in this book discuss cultural similarities and differences in various aspects of emotions - from emotional expression to emotional recognition and emotion regulation. Emotion research from the perspective of cross-cultural psychology provides readers with a more nuanced view: it is not only about the difference between individualism and collectivism, but also about how the broad context influences many psychological processes in between, which in turn guide emotional processing and response. The automatically generated literature summaries are intended to provide researchers, students and professionals in the field of psychology with a quick overview of current developments in the topic. They should also be useful as a stimulus and impulse for current research questions, for new strategies and for possible solutions in difficult situations.

Engelhard, George / Wind, Stefanie A., Invariant Measurement with Explanatory Rasch Models in the Human Sciences. 249 pp. 2026:1 (Springer, GW) <760-7>
ISBN 978-3-032-08815-4 hard ¥28,431.- (税込) EUR 109.99

This textbook introduces invariant measurement in the human sciences based on the principles of Rasch measurement theory and presents explanatory Rasch models that integrate item and person covariates that can deepen the understanding of item response processes. The basic family of Rasch models reflects descriptive measurement models. This book describes explanatory item response models that can be used to explore and predict item response probabilities using item and person variables (covariates) that can be explicitly included in measurement models for the purpose of constructing scales to represent latent variables. The analyses described in this book offer methodological tools that can be used to delve more deeply into person responses to a set of items designed to represent a latent variable or construct. Item and person covariates provide insight into aspects of measurement procedures that may influence or explain measurement properties, such as item difficulty or level of person achievement. Rasch measurement theory provides the opportunity to include both person and item covariates that allows for more nuanced substantive analyses of latent variables that go beyond description. Across chapters, the book progresses from foundational principles and generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) for estimating Rasch models, to applications in measurement quality evaluation, explanatory modeling, rater-mediated assessments, instrument development, and rating scale analysis. Invariant Measurement with Explanatory Rasch Models in the Human Sciences will be a valuable resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the human sciences attending advanced undergraduate courses on test theory and measurement, as well as graduate-level courses and seminars on rating scales and invariant measurement. This book can also be used as a supplementary textbook in a variety of courses on research methodology in the social, behavioral and health sciences including psychology, public health, anthropology, sociology education and economics.

Polyakov, Sergey Ernestovich, Objective Mental Reality- The 'Dark Matter' of the Social Sciences: Volume 1: The Physical and Social Spheres. 246 pp. 2026:1 (Springer, GW) <760-52>
ISBN 978-3-032-11132-6 hard ¥38,771.- (税込) EUR 149.99

The book offers a philosophical and cognitive justification for the author's concept of Objective Mental Reality (OMR), which links individual consciousness with society's intersubjective understanding of the world. The first part of the book explains why the concept of OMR is essential to modern science. Objects and phenomena do not exist for humans in isolation: they are formed in consciousness as mental representations and only in OMR do they acquire the status of real entities. This makes reality understandable, structured, and actionable. The second part is devoted to the physical realm of OMR. Any object appears not only as an object of perception but also as a bearer of cultural meanings. Even the scientific picture of the world turns out to be part of OMR, since its laws and facts are also mental constructions. The third part addresses the social sphere. Institutions, roles, norms, values, and events exist only insofar as people believe in them and confirm them through their behavior. OMR is revealed as a "second layer" of reality, where entities are formed that organize experience and guide our behavior. The book offers a groundbreaking explanation of how consciousness and society create the world we live in, revealing the key role of the OMR in the interaction of psyche, matter, and society.

Hill, Charles T. / Aydin, Kamile Bahar, Well-Being Across Relationships, Time, and Cultures: Comparing Romantic Partners and Singles. 311 pp. 2026:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <760-226>
ISBN 978-3-032-06430-1 hard ¥38,771.- (税込) EUR 149.99

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the many components of well-being and the many factors which can influence it. As opposed to the books which explore just a single component of it or the well-being of one group at one time in one culture, it begins by reviewing theories of the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components of well-being, and variations in relationships, time, and cultures that can influence well-being. It emphasizes that positive and negative well-being often comes in reaction to needs being met or not being met, or perceived as being threatened. A primary means of meeting needs is by interacting with others, in single encounters or on-going relationships. Part II presents new analyses of five studies that compare various types of relationship partners and singles, confirming that on average relationship partners often have higher well-being than singles. But many singles have high well-being, and some relationship partners have low well-being, with singles being more at risk of low well-being. Previous research has paid insufficient attention to the well-being of singles, who are an increasing percentage of adults. The final section provides an overview of the ways in which individuals, communities, therapists, and researchers can promote well-being.
