Human Psychology and the Destruction of the Planet. (Anthropocene - Humanities and Social Sciences) 223 pp. 2025:10 (Springer, GW) <756-861>
ISBN 978-3-032-02079-6 hard ¥32,600.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book sheds light on the reasons for our inaction in matters of the environmental crisis and presents solutions to address the crisis. The work draws on numerous disciplinary fields, such as psychology, neuroscience, anthropology, biology, philosophy, sociology, economics, ethology. The author argues that it is not possible to correctly understand the current environmental crisis in the light of a single discipline and emphasizes the importance of cognitive sciences to address the environmental crisis. He shows that the reasons for human inaction relate as much to the characteristics of our psyche/brain as to those of the consumption society that we invented and have lived in at least since the Neolithic. The analysis presented stresses the need to regulate individual behavior and to call into question our consumption patterns. Without questioning the characteristics of both modern society, and the way our brains work, will make it impossible to resolve the environmental crisis. This book proposes a revolutionary change of the way we live and act to preserve the planet.

Community Environmental Psychology and Community Resilience. 307 pp. 2025:11 (Springer, GW) <756-862>
ISBN 978-3-032-02677-4 hard ¥35,108.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book presents a particular kind of environmental psychology that has emerged in Latin America: community environmental psychology. Different grom mainstream environmental psychology developed in the Global Norh - which usually focuses on individual differences, often disconnected from historical, social and political contexts - community environmental psychology is a situated approach aimed at social change and in articulation with community psychology, developed to study interactions between people and communities in relation to the natural and/or built space. This contributed volume is organized into two complementary parts. Chapters in the first part articulate conceptual frameworks that nourish community environmental psychology and methodological approaches that help to understand, analyze and transform dynamics between communities and their environments from a situated, critical perspective committed to socio-environmental justice. Chapters of the second part present studies of community resilience in environmental psychology based on case studies carried out in six Latin American countries. These works reveal the applicability of diverse conceptual and methodological frameworks for an empirical approach to community resilience in specific psycho-environmental contexts. Situated in territories marked by socio-natural disasters, unequal urbanization, extractive economies and environmental conflicts, the studies show how communities develop and deploy response, resistance and territorial transformation capacities when faced with contexts marked by social injustice and persistent exclusion. Community Environmental Psychology and Community Resilience aims to position community environmental psychology as a field of scientific and applied development committed to social transformation. Based on the theoretical and methodological approaches presented in the first part and the empirical studies included in the second, the book proposes an approach that situates community as the central axis of the analysis and allows expanding the traditional frameworks of environmental psychology by integrating structural vulnerability, collective agency and power, understood as procedural and contextual dynamics that configure our communal lives as constitutive dimensions of the person-environment relationship.

Finnish Shia Youth and the Qur'an: Cultural Psychological Perspectives on Lived Religion. (Muslims in Global Societies Series 13) 233 pp. 2025:11 (Springer, GW) <756-93>
ISBN 978-3-032-03456-4 hard ¥37,616.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book investigates the role of the Qur'an in the everyday lives of young Shia Muslims in Finland. Adopting a cultural psychological perspective on Islamic scripture, the book approaches the Qur'an as a symbolic resource that young Muslims can draw on to find guidance and support, to reflect on the meaning and purpose in their lives, or to experience community with other believers. The book emphasizes the variety of ways in which young Shia Muslims relate to the scripture, bringing to life the various ways in which young Shia Muslims grapple with a text that is difficult to understand and try to construct a meaning that makes it relevant in the context of contemporary Finland. This book provides a novel approach to the religious lives of a little-known religious minority. In addition, it brings together fields that have so far been largely separate, in particular cultural psychology and Islamic studies. As such, the book provides a valuable resource to scholars interested in lived religion, religious minorities, Islam in Europe, sacred texts, as well as culture and human mind.

Young Adult Drinking Styles: Current Perspectives on Research, Policy and Practice. 2nd ed. (Sustainable Development Goals Series) 469 pp. 2025:11 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <756-257>
ISBN 978-3-031-98527-0 hard ¥37,616.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This edited volume brings together cutting-edge research on drinking practices among young adults. This substantially revised and expanded second edition builds on the award-winning work of the first edition and adds new chapters on: young people's drinking in low- and middle-income countries, the impact of the alcohol industry and of the Covid 19 pandemic. An entirely new section examines important shifts in drinking practices during and since the Covid-19 pandemic including a focus on 'lockdown drinking' and the transition back (or not) to physical drinking spaces since the height of the pandemic. In acknowledging the complex nature of drinking styles among young adults, the contributors to this collection eschew traditional understandings of young adult drinking which can pathologise and generalise. We showcase a range of interdisciplinary and disciplinary perspectives and advocate for an inclusive approach, evident in the wide range of international settings, cultural perspectives, backgrounds and methods represented in this book, in order to better understand the economic, socio-cultural and pharmacological crossroads at which we now stand. This book will appeal in particular to researchers, practitioners and policy makers working in the fields of alcohol and substance use, public health and health psychology, in addition to students and researchers from across the social sciences.

Music Deep and Wide in Older Adults. (International Perspectives on Aging 49) 164 pp. 2025:12 (Springer, GW) <756-272>
ISBN 978-3-032-01247-0 hard ¥37,616.- (税込) EUR 149.99
The purpose of this book is to address older adults' musical group activities and their relation to quality of life in Japan, situated on a crossroad between deep Eastern cultural traditions and broad contemporary innovations and Western influences. This is the first book that offers both insider and outsider perspectives on older adults' music participation in Japan. It is the result of a collaborative effort of a team of academics in Japan led by a Fulbright researcher from the United States, who resided and worked on the project in Japan for six months. The collaboration continued for a few years beyond the Fulbright residency period. The book consists of 10 chapters in three parts. The first part includes an introductory chapter that sets the stage with strong cultural traditions in the contemporary ambience for older adults' music participation. Part two contains studies of seven diverse cases jointly conducted by native Japanese researchers and a researcher with Chinese-American background. The majority of the researchers received training in the UK and the US. This allows each study with built-in perspectives from within and outside of Japan and with deep Asian, Japanese, and Western insights. These case studies are set in rural areas (Kojima, Nishio, and Uonuma), mid-size cities (Miyazaki and Sendai), world class metropolises (Nagoya and Tokyo), and suburban areas (Odaka and Seto). Three of the case studies include non-musical groups in comparison with the musical groups. Part three contains two chapters. One is a synthesis of the case studies in the seven locations, identifying the main factors that make older adults' music participation positive and impactful to their quality of life. The final chapter includes implications relevant to older adults' music participation in support of their quality of life. Recommendations can be applicable far beyond the locales of the cases being studied.

Resignifying the World Across and Beyond Categories. (SpringerBriefs in Psychology) 141 pp. 2025:11 (Springer, GW) <756-1179>
ISBN 978-3-032-01293-7 paper ¥11,282.- (税込) EUR 44.99
This book builds on the activities realized during the VI International Seminar of Cultural Psychology realized in May 2023 in Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), particularly a workshop forming a dialogical and open space of theoretical and methodological innovations. More specifically, researchers addressed meaning making processes that enable re-signifying reality across categories-dynamically shifting from one domain to another-and beyond them-developing synthesis and forming new ways of understanding and approaching cultural phenomenon. In this perspective the cultural processes that are discussed concern practical encounters -with people from different ages in different settings, particularly (but not exclusively) in the context of intervention- and pragmatic issues (how to approach people). In a neoliberal society in which language is used in its literal sense over its virtual meaning, categories tend to be reinforced in every iteration and potentially lead to segregation and exclusion as they are rendered invisible through interdiction of speaking (taboo) or framing social encounters with monological logic. In this book, the authors shed new light on categorization by re-signifying it in a dynamic fashion in relation to a variety of domains (gender, mental health, movement, aesthetics, poverty, are some examples). This book furnishes theoretical, methodological and practical tools that enable re-thinking about the process of recategorization. It has the potential to inspire the reframing of theory, research, as well as practices in psychology and other disciplines.

Psychological Richness As Breakthrough: Stuck in the Tunnel of Success. 185 pp. 2025:11 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <756-1188>
ISBN 978-3-031-99781-5 hard ¥35,108.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book explores how living in accordance with the main ideals (wealth, fame, social power) of our individualistic meritocratic society comes at the expense of our psychological richness. To protect or restore this richness, the mainstream conception of success has to be extended beyond the standard definition. The experience of success is too precious to keep it restricted within the imprisoning walls of the individualistic self. There are more ways to be successful. We have arrived in an era where success in life needs the inclusion of three main components: the "success of the other person," the "diversity of our value system beyond economic values," and "the survival success of nature". The book is distinctive in that it gives a profound treatment of the reasons why many people feel discontented about the restrictive emphasis on individual success and excellence. It deals not only with the limitations of meritocracy but also offers pathways to deal with them.

The Metalinguistic Mind: Typically and Atypically-Developing Children. 189 pp. 2025:11 (Springer, GW) <756-1191>
ISBN 978-3-032-03023-8 hard ¥32,600.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book is about metalinguistic awareness (MLA), a broad area whose relevance has been acknowledged by several disciplines. The authors treat the topic from three main perspectives: developmental, methodological, and clinical. They begin by outlining the main historical developmental models and the way metalinguistic development is intertwined with such factors as literacy, bilingualism, executive function, and Theory of Mind. They then proceed to consider a series of methodological issues related to the assessment of MLA based on the possible variation of research objectives, tools, and designs, and finally face the metalinguistic challenges experienced by children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders. Throughout the three sections of the book that develop these perspectives, a common thread can be recognized, which justifies the title: "The metalinguistic mind". By this expression, the authors mean a way of reasoning on form/content relationships that applies transversally to phonological, morphological, syntactical, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of language. This process begins at preschool age with active forms of curiosity about forms and meanings of words, using explicit language to comment on language, often revealing an awareness of conflicts between linguistic forms, and showing the need to find consistent solutions to reconcile these linguistic conflicts. This argumentative attitude goes much beyond the application of linguistic rules or the use of metalanguage, and may manifest itself even when unrequested. The authors insist on the conflictual aspect inherent in all metalinguistic tasks. Accordingly, metalinguistic assessment should point to the consistency with which these conflicts are reconciled on explicit grounds. This is where metalinguistic development and methodology can converge, on the condition that both researchers and examiners bring to light those capabilities to argue about structural aspects of language. Lastly, even in the clinical conditions described by the authors, despite evident language difficulties, recent treatments have shown very interesting possibilities to enhance basic linguistic abilities and promote further improvements toward a "meta"- level. This complex interplay between metalinguistic development in typical children, assessment methodology, and the potentialities that open up in atypical conditions underscores the concept of "metalinguistic mind".

This statement is borne out in much research, and the alarming threat that loneliness presents is such that the U.S. Surgeon General issued an 82-page advisory in 2023 on what he called an "epidemic" of loneliness. Here in this Handbook of Loneliness, are gathered experts on loneliness from all over the world, in multiple disciplines, in which they discuss the results of their research and that of their colleagues on a wide range of topics related to understanding loneliness. The Springer Handbook of Loneliness is an invaluable reference for anyone seeking a wide-ranging, deeper understanding of the causes and effects of loneliness, and how loneliness can be reduced.

Reframing Developmental Psychology: Perspectives from the Global South. (Perspectives on Human Development) 384 pp. 2025:11 (Emerald, UK) <756-1199>
ISBN 978-1-80592-081-6 hard ¥24,541.- (税込) US$ 115.00
ISBN 978-1-80592-083-0 paper ¥14,297.- (税込) US$ 67.00
Reframing Developmental Psychology: Perspectives from the Global South critically examines the dominant frameworks in Developmental Psychology, challenging the discipline's reliance on mainstream theories, universalist assumptions, and culturally narrow research samples. By addressing issues such as WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) psychology and developmentalism, the book calls for a more inclusive and culturally grounded approach to understanding human development. Contributors to this volume carefully question the assumptions that underlie conventional developmental discourse and advocate acknowledging historical contexts, cultural specificity, and diverse epistemologies, while retaining the larger objective of universal scientific study. Universalism should not imply uniformity. Emphasizing perspectives from the Global South - understood as both a geographical and conceptual space - this book highlights the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge systems, alternative methodologies, and collaborative scholarship in the advancement of a culturally informed study of human developmental processes. It critiques the over-reliance on positivist, standardized research methods that fail to capture the complexities of meaning-making and cultural variation. Instead, it calls for a redefinition of what constitutes valid knowledge, advocating for interdisciplinary approaches that bridge psychology, anthropology, sociology, literature and philosophy. By dismantling colonial legacies and reconsidering the ethical, epistemological, and methodological foundations of the field, the book fosters a vision of Developmental Psychology that is equitable, pluralistic, and responsive to the diverse realities of human experience.

This book identities several varieties of digital displacement, focussing on the impact of these developments on our quality of life, our sense of wellbeing. During the course of the 21st century we have seen a profound change in human behaviour and experience through the intervening and changing effects of evolving digital technologies. This development is characterised by our psychologically spending more and more of our waking lives in places other than where our bodies are physically located. Prior to these changes, personhood was tied to being in a particular body, in a particular place, at a particular time. The book examines this development and explores its ramifications for individual and social experiences, and for the sense of self, of being a person displaced into cyberspace. Because we retain our sense of being in our own body, although relocated to another place, when we feel technologically disembodied it is as if we have left our body behind, perhaps sitting in a train, a cafe, an armchair, or behind a familiar desk. We might be walking down a street, engaged with our mobile phone while following the stream of other pedestrians, with almost no attention devoted to our physical location. With the increased prevalence of various forms of VR, it is as if we have travelled, bodily as well as psychologically, to a different distant place, and even into a different body. This provides a unique perspective for understanding the impact and importance of technology-mediated change on our psychological and social lives.

This book examines family and peer relationships of children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders (ND), including ADHD, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and intellectual developmental disorder (intellectual disabilities). It uses a transdiagnostic approach to describe how the difficulties ND youth have with self-regulation, adaptive skills, academic achievement, and social skills contribute to parenting stress, parent mental health challenges, and problematic family and peer relationships. The book reviews research detailing that youth with ND have challenges with mental health and are differentially susceptible to adverse environmental factors, such as negative parenting, peer rejection and victimization, stigma, and COVID-19. It offers innovative approaches for conducting assessments of the family system and peer environment that are based on risk and resilience research. Watkins, Mary,
White Work and Reparative Genealogy: Reckoning with Ancestral Debt as a Path to Racial Reparations. 362 pp. 2025:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <756-1040>
ISBN 978-3-032-02815-0 paper ¥5,765.- (税込) EUR 22.99
What does it mean to reckon with a legacy of white supremacy? White Work and Reparative Genealogy invites white-identifying readers on a courageous journey into the heart of ancestral memory, historical accountability, and racial repair. Clinical psychologist Mary Watkins traces her family's lineage from 1607 Jamestown through generations of slave ownership and racial violence in the American South. Blending personal narrative, historical research, and psychological insight, Watkins models a practice of "white work"-a form of reparative genealogy that confronts the silences and distortions in white family histories. With reflective questions at the end of each chapter, this book offers practical tools for readers ready to explore their own histories and take action toward racial justice. This is a book for those who seek to move through guilt and shame-not around them-toward healing, solidarity, and shared liberation.

Jaspal, Rusi,
The Psychology of Coming Out: Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identities. 306 pp. 2025:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <756-1055>
ISBN 978-3-032-02598-2 hard ¥10,028.- (税込) EUR 39.99
Until now, dominant models of sexual identity development have overlooked the interpersonal process of coming out to somebody significant. None interrogate the implications of coming out for the total identity of the individual. In this elegant and original book, Rusi Jaspal proposes an integrative theoretical framework within which the psychological antecedents, consequences, and experiences of coming out can be collectively examined. Drawing on case studies and the first-hand accounts of over 500 lesbian, gay, and bisexual people regarding their coming out experiences, this book forces us to re-think the notion that we now live a "post-gay era" in which coming out no longer matters. It explores themes, such as identity authenticity, interpersonal relationships, identity invalidation, rejection, microaggressions, gaslighting, and ghosting. The Psychology of Coming Out: Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identities is an invaluable resource for students, academics, and practitioners interested in the psychology of coming out.
