Why do some immigrant communities throw themselves into political life, while others remain on the sidelines? This book addresses this question by examining the Chinese communities of Sydney, drawing on dozens of in-depth interviews, an original survey, and national survey data up to 2025.

The author argues that Sydney's Chinese evangelical churches offer migrants a complete world of friendship, restored status, emotional support, and a sense of belonging in an unfamiliar country. However, this completeness can quietly turn members away from politics, a phenomenon the author terms the 'Sanctuary Trap'. By contrast, secular Chinese associations act as bridges, connecting their members to wider society and encouraging political engagement. The comparative analysis of the two organizational types provides a sustained theoretical argument about the conditions under which associational involvement facilitates or constrains political participation.

A fresh account of faith, belonging, and political life, this book offers lessons for migrant communities far beyond Australia. It will appeal to scholars and students of sociology, Asian studies, religion and politics, as well as to Asian immigrants.

October 7, 2023, marked a watershed in Jewish life. The Hamas attack on Israel on that date, and the wars that have raged in the Middle East ever since, brought anti-Jewish hatred from the fringes of society to the mainstream, making it a daily experience for Jewish people in Britain and around the world. Murderous attacks on Jews and the burning of synagogues became, once again, a feature of Western societies, with old anti-Jewish myths and libels repackaged for a smartphone audience. This rise in antisemitism was driven by fervent hatred of Israel and demonisation of Zionism: what began at Kibbutz Be'eri on October 7 led, eventually but inevitably, to the massacre of Jews on Bondi Beach two years later. From Be'eri to Bondi tells this story through articles, essays and talks written by the author over that period, brought up to date with a fresh perspective three years on: a real-time account of how it has felt for Jews as their sense of safety and belonging in their own countries started to crumble. It provides an explanation for why this happened, and a programme of action for how to stop this most ancient of hatreds from spreading even further.

This book investigates the intersection between race, class and gender in South Africa's post-apartheid cinema.

The book argues that the colonial and apartheid era established a multiform, racist and sexist narrative in the film industry that persisted into the post-apartheid era, with films often struggling to render a nuanced and dynamic representation of Black women. The end of apartheid marked a crucial moment in the history of South Africa's struggles against all forms of oppression, and it came with a notable shift in film production in the country. This in turn led to increased international recognition, with many films being nominated for prestigious major awards. Considering key films of the period, and drawing on cultural studies, Black feminism, standpoint theory and Gramsci's theory of hegemony, this book argues that despite these advances, the inequalities and power relations that characterised both the colonial and apartheid eras continued to be reproduced and re-envisioned in post-apartheid South Africa's movie industry, except for a few discontinuities in some of the films directed by women.

Encouraging readers to challenge assumptions about the post-apartheid era, this book will be an important read for researchers of South African media studies, cultural studies, communication studies, and film studies.

Originally written in 1980 by the Lorenzo J. Greene, Gary R. Kremer, and Antonio F. Holland and revised and updated in 1993 by Kremer and Holland, Missouri's Black Heritage, now in a greatly expanded third edition, remains the only book-length account of the rich and inspiring history of the Show-Me State's African American population. With more than one hundred photographs, most of them new to this third edition, Kremer and Holland incorporate the latest scholarship as they describe in detail the struggles many Black Missourians continue to face in the aftermath of their ancestors' arduous and courageous struggles since Emancipation to achieve their full civil and political rights as U.S. citizens.

Documenting the African American experience from the horrors of slavery through the great victories over many generations, the book touches on the lives of people such as John Berry Meachum, a St. Louis slave who purchased his own freedom and then helped countless other slaves gain emancipation; Hiram Young, a Jackson County free black whose manufacturing of wagons for Sante Fe Trail travelers made him a legendary figure; James Milton Turner, who, after rising from slavery to become one of the best-educated blacks in Missouri worked with the Freedmen's Bureau and the State Department of Education to establish schools for blacks all over the state after the Civil War; and Annie Turnbo Malone, a St. Louis entrepreneur whose business skills made her one of the state's wealthiest African Americans in the early twentieth century.

A personal reminiscence by the late Lorenzo J. Greene, a distinguished African American historian whom many regard as one of the fathers of Black history, offers a unique view of Missouri's racial history and heritage, as do Kremer and Holland, in their new preface and introduction to the third edition.

South Africa is often dubbed as a young nation, with youth making up 35.7% of the total population. But are its institutions set up to include all young people equitably? Unearthing the Institutionalised Social Exclusion of Black Youth in Contemporary South Africa highlights how the social exclusion of impoverished black youth in South Africa remains deeply entrenched within the key institutions of health, education, and employment.

Shifting the focus of youth exclusion to institutions and how it is embedded within these and focusing on health, education, and economic systems, Kubeka provides a toolkit for interventions to challenge exclusion within institutions. Drawing upon well-established theories of social exclusion and neo-institutionalism as lenses through which to reflect upon, unearth, centre, reframe, and reimagine social exclusion, particularly as it is experienced by black youth from the townships of South Africa, the author provides an understanding and articulation of how certain individuals and a collective of individuals are excluded from fully participating in society. Presenting a conception of 'youth social exclusion' that captures the complex social disconnection of youth resulting from a socioeconomic positionality that is inherently precarious, Kubeka calls for an institutional analysis approach to be adopted to enable the identification of the nature and processes of exclusion inherent within the structure and systems of institutions.

Offering recommendations for the creation of strategic and intervention frameworks to assist existing institutions of education, health, and employment to be more inclusive and to effectively facilitate smooth transitions to adulthood among black youth, this is important reading for scholars interested in reforming education, health and the economic systems.

Sweden, like other Nordic countries, prides itself on being "colorblind" or immune to the kinds of racism found in, for example, the United States. In the 1960s and 1970s, white Swedish documentarians, in the fashion of early anthropologists, recorded racial tensions amid the US civil rights movement. More recently, in the twenty-first century, short films produced by Swedes of color have tackled racism and bigotry within Sweden.

Benjamin Mier-Cruz offers a comparative study of these two periods of Swedish documentary filmmaking. "Racially innocent" white documentarians of the mid-twentieth century developed an "aesthetics of altruism" predicated on Sweden's assumed racial equalitarianism-a notion that their documentaries in turn helped create and maintain. In contemporary films, on the other hand, Swedes of color use the same filmic format to challenge not only their predecessors' reductionist, pseudo-anthropological presentations but also Sweden's purportedly colorblind ideology. Mier-Cruz's close readings of films from both eras demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of the documentary form and the ways in which it is motivated by politics and activism.

In the early twentieth century, African Americans created an agricultural community in northern Baja California, Mexico, which they called Little Liberia. As a transborder activist community, the people of Little Liberia sought to counter the forces of White supremacy in North America, primarily by building a stable financial and political foundation for African Americans. The story of this community, told in full for the first time in Little Liberia: A Dream of Black Freedom in the US-Mexico Borderlands, is one of Black innovation and cross-cultural enterprise at a time of racial persecution and political turbulence-a little known but instructive chapter in the intersecting history of Black America and the borderlands of the Southwest.

Organized by African American businessmen chiefly from California and Oklahoma, Little Liberia began as the Lower California Mexican Land Development Company, which strove to build African American economic power through agricultural production outside the nation's borders. Its sister organization, the International Community Welfare League, dedicated itself to fighting the spread of White supremacy by unifying African Americans, Indigenous peoples, and people of Mexican descent. Laura Hooton describes how these entities jointly navigated US-Mexico politics during World War I and the Mexican Revolution, including issues of land ownership, immigration, race and ethnicity, and imperialism and colonialism. Her book traces the community's shifting business focus, geographic scope, and membership over its eleven-year history-its formation in Los Angeles, recruitment in Oklahoma after the Tulsa Race Massacre, expansion of relations with Mexican politicians, and highly public collapse.

Making Home in the Euro-Caribbean delves into the intricate dynamics of Dominican migration within the Caribbean, focusing on how receiving society characteristics alongside immigrants' preferences shape feelings of home. From the outbreak of civil war in El Salvador in 1979 through its conclusion in 1992, some 1.5 million Salvadorans fled the violence. This book focuses on the displaced Salvadorans who remained in Central America, seeking refuge in Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Their story has been almost entirely overshadowed by the greater numbers who fled farther north to the United States; however, as Rachael De La Cruz shows, the Central American history of Salvadoran refugees is rich, complex, and instructive for scholars of refugee studies, international relations, and human rights.

The isthmus nations that received Salvadoran refugees did not react consistently, and the arriving Salvadorans themselves were not passive participants. National mythologies, perceptions of economic contributions and burdens, regional militarization, state violence, and varying capacities for refugee activism, compounded by the fraught and variable circumstances of the Cold War, together shaped the multitude of government attitudes and policies toward the refugee communities within these countries' borders. Rarely were refugees simply "a problem to solve"; rather, they represented and acted as catalysts for economic, social, and geopolitical change.
