This book traces the shifting politics of race in contemporary Britain through analysis of screen comedy that has worked to parrot, cloak or confront racist discourse. Moving from 1950s minstrelsy through to contemporary streaming-era content, Ilott demonstrates how race is made and unmade through screen comedy's engagements with the tacit (and often racist) premises of British multicultural discourse. Chapters on the romcom, sitcom and police comedy read selected films and TV shows as counter-narratives on British multiculturalism, intervening in popular discourse that constructs interracial romance as spelling hope for the future, the Black neighbour as inherently threatening, or racially minoritised communities as disproportionately criminal. Drawing on decolonial, critical race and cultural studies perspectives, the study reimagines humour theory as a vehicle for interpreting the affective, political and epistemological significance of comedy to shape processes of racialisation and national identity construction.

The unquestionable runaway television hit of late 2025 was Crave/HBO Max's Heated Rivalry, a show that tells the love story of two queer ice hockey players. This show-and the wider social context around it-would have been unthinkable without the courageous writing, art, and advocacy of previous generations of LGBTQ+ people and their allies in the entertainment industry. In How to Win a Culture War, sociologist Lisa M. Stulberg argues that, despite substantial barriers, past and current creatives and athletes are changing American culture through their contributions to arts, sports, and politics.

Stulberg conducted in-depth interviews with 170 culture workers-including television, film, and theater actors and creators; musicians; elite athletes; and activists over the span of 14 years. These include stars such as Will & Grace's Eric McCormack, Orange Is the New Black's Lea DeLaria, Olympic diver Greg Louganis, and several former NFL players, as well as the TV and movie writers, producers, and directors behind some of pop culture's boldest moves. These culture makers take six primary steps toward LGBTQ+ social change: they become visible, use available platforms, change their workplaces, overachieve, become normal, and stay queer. The new superintendent stood before the faculty of "Oakmont High," a large, diverse public school, and spoke a cold truth about American education. He described seeing the vibrant mix of students in the school's hallways disperse into racially segregated classrooms when the bell rang. The fact was that students were sorted into tracks-supposedly race-neutral, "ability-based" pathways-that led to sharply unequal experiences and opportunities throughout high school and often their whole lives. "Why is it fair for white kids to have a better education than Black kids?" the superintendent asked his faculty. "It's racism pure and simple, and it's going to stop!"

Racial inequality persists because racism is systemic, baked into countless interlacing beliefs, practices, and structures that make up the way we do school. Tracking is one of many such practices. In Beautiful Struggle, Sharon M. Chubbuck and Cynthia M. Ellwood examine eleven years of transformation by administrators, teachers, students, and others as they tackled systemic racism head-on, starting with tracking. The people of OHS encountered intense resistance and made extraordinary inroads. They fought inequality with hard conversations and concrete steps. They dramatically increased Black and brown students' access to rich, rigorous learning from the moment students entered as freshmen. They questioned and restructured the interconnected web of policy and practices in every aspect of the school. Students themselves propelled major changes in academic opportunity and the very culture of the school.

Chubbuck and Ellwood argue that taking on racial inequality requires an unrelenting focus on racial justice, challenging systems on every front, broad collective leadership across race and role, and the will to navigate difference and conflict. The story within Beautiful Struggle offers a hopeful though sobering path forward.

The fields and orchards of the Midwest have offered seasonal agricultural work for countless Latinx migrant laborers. For more than a century, Mexican, Mexican American, and Puerto Rican migrants converged in the heartland's agricultural industry to perform some of the most grueling labor needed to sustain the vital agribusiness of the region. In return, they were rewarded with dismal working conditions, poor government protections, and fierce hostility to their organizing efforts. Juan Ignacio Mora uncovers the everyday strategies these migratory laborers employed to fight for better economic conditions, offering a new history of the farmworker justice movement that transforms our understanding of the US heartland.

Mexican, Mexican American, and Puerto Rican migrants arrived in the Midwest with vastly different circumstances of class, ethnicity, and immigration status, which fueled complex collaborations and conflicts. In Seneca Village, Alexander Manevitz showcases the ideas of freedom that underpinned this remarkable community, built in upper Manhattan with the intent to foster Black social, economic, and political self-determination. Between 1825 and 1853, free African Americans bought land and built an innovative settlement. Then, through the 1850s, New York City forcibly evicted the residents, seized the land, and destroyed the buildings, burying this thriving neighborhood under the landscape of the new Central Park.

In this most in-depth investigation to date of Seneca Village, Manevitz reconstructs the essential history of the community from the overlooked traces they left behind, focusing on the interconnected lives of Seneca Villagers and the daily work of liberation. Decades before the Civil War and Reconstruction, they honed a vision of Black freedom on their own terms, fighting to create space for themselves in a country that promised liberty for all but denied it to many.

The proposed book undertakes a critical examination of the relationship between technologies of automation, migration and citizenship. Automation is refers to the use of technological systems to carry out operations independently, without human intervention (Nof, 2009). Typically automation is used to augment, improve, and complete tasks in a more efficient manner, promising significant benefits, from standardization to financial savings, freeing labour time for humans (Borry and Getha-Taylor, 2019; Restrepo, 2023). While technologies of automation are accompanied by narratives of progress and freedom, they are linked not only with increased surveillance but also with a shift in surveillance practices from discipline to prediction (Andrejevic, 2019; Zuboff, 2019). Automating technologies, especially machine learning algorithms, operate through sorting and categorisation, which are subsequently used to identify patterns and make predictions on the basis of these patterns. It comes as no surprise therefore that such technologies are involved in replicating discriminatory patterns of the past.

This book presents a critical and comparative history of how human populations have been socially constructed and categorized through racializing processes. Building on Renato Foschi's Italian volume Storia dei razzismi (2022), this expanded English edition offers a unique synthesis of historical case studies and the underlying logics that have sustained racism across time and cultures.

Foschi distinguishes between spiritual and scientific racisms, tracing their development through religious, philosophical, and pseudo-scientific traditions. He examines how various groups-including Jewish communities, people of African descent, women, working-class individuals, and LGBTQ+ people-have been positioned as distinct "races" through shifting systems of exclusion. The book also explores lesser-known cases, such as the racialization of Southern Italians, to demonstrate how these dynamics operate within national and regional contexts.

The second half of the book focuses on resistance-how racialized communities have mobilized pride, solidarity, and intersectional alliances to challenge discrimination. The final chapter reflects on human biodiversity and the enduring misconceptions that continue to shape contemporary forms of racialization.

Originally published in 2020, Jim Crow Sociology is a lauded history of how "Black sociology" came into existence. Diving into the history of four historically Black colleges and universities and their roles in pioneering a new intellectual field, Earl Wright II argues that the roots of sociology lie not in the primarily white Ivies but in HBCUs. Wright's work is foundational in tracing the roots of sociology at distinct institutions. Tuskegee Institute, for example, established the first program of applied rural sociology under the leadership of Booker T. Washington. Fisk University, under the guidance of first George Edmund Haynes and then Charles S. Johnson, developed one of the earliest and most influential programs of applied urban sociology. The history of W. E. B. Du Bois's Atlanta Sociological Laboratory reveals the contributions of women to the first American school of sociology.

In exploring the histories of these institutions and programs, Wright upends old ideas about the roots of an academic discipline and makes the case that sociology began in the United States as a Black and Southern enterprise.

Navigating Black Joy for Black Women Leaders in Higher Education delves into lived experiences of Black women who resist structural oppression and inequity through the radical act of joy. Founded in 1935, the New Farmers of America (NFA) was the first national organization for Black farm boys studying vocational agriculture at segregated public high schools across the South-and as far north as New Jersey. Sociologist and award-winning author Bobby J. Smith II charts new terrain in Black history by uncovering the hidden story of the organization, which grew to an annual membership of more than 55,000 members and empowered Black boys to challenge racial exclusion in agriculture by becoming farmers and pursuing careers in agriculture. But by 1965, the NFA had vanished-unraveled by a hostile takeover by the predominantly white Future Farmers of America (FFA). The NFA, and the generation of Black agricultural leaders it helped shape, were largely erased from the historical record.

In vivid prose, Smith confronts the haunting paradox of the NFA: an organization that transformed rural Black life yet remains almost entirely absent from American memory. Reconstructing the NFA's rise, influence, and disappearance, Black Farm Boys reshapes the history of the Black agricultural experience and restores a vital chapter in the story of education, rural life, and racial justice in the United States.

This book provides a unique perspective on migration throughout Western Europe after the Second World War by exploring the complex histories of migrant children and families under the conditions of a restrictive migration regime. By historicising what 'family', 'migration', or 'childhood' meant in specific historical moments and places, this collection examines the impact that intra-European population mobilisation had on migrants between the 1950s and early 1990s. While previous research has focused on the many legal, economic, and diplomatic aspects of European migration, this book sheds light on the social situations, strategies, and experiences of so-called 'guest workers', particularly in relation to their families. Due to official archives revealing little about the lives of children who lived, sometimes for years, clandestinely, in their host countries, there is a need for a more nuanced approach to understanding the perspectives of migrating families in the mid-twentieth century. The contributions in this book bring together research from diverse fields, such as oral history, the sociology of mobilisation, social history of migration, social justice, gender studies, and transnationalism. On various levels (from the local to the international), they explore and contextualise the strategies which migrant families adopted to help deal with the hesitation of Western European nation states to grant the right of family reunification to labour migrants. Their analysis allows to establish a comprehensive and comparative overview about the multiple social situations that shape the live of migrant families, including access to schooling, health care, or the legal system.

Rooted in scholarship on intersectional feminism and drawing on the lived experiences of women of color, this edited volume explores the formation and practice of intersectional community, across varied contexts, as a powerful agent of social change. Chapters focus on conceptualizing women of color sisterhoods as disruptive to dominant white, male narratives of success; re-imagining self-care as acts of collective care; analyzing the dynamic, reciprocal relationships between women of color and their larger communities in terms of space and place; and experiencing sisterhood across and within generations. Incorporating both autoethnography and traditional ethnography, this volume offers unique insights on the practice of intersectional community among women of color.
