There are currently over 1.3 billion people globally who experience exclusion and inequality rooted in persistent and deep ableism. Quality research with and about disabled people is vital to changing this situation. Such research presents ethical challenges and complexities which have not been given the attention they deserve if we are to advance disability rights as promised by the UNCRPD and other equality and human rights commitments.
Considering important aspects of general ethical principles, including respect, consent, privacy and confidentiality, this volume of Advances in Research Ethics and Integrity fills that gap. It does so while also recognising the broad scope, diversity and significant size of the disabled population.
Experienced researchers from the field examine processes of disablement and the specificities which arise when researching the lives of people with physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments. Authors also incorporate social factors such as gender, ethnicity and age and how they interact with disability. Building from the context set by the UNCRPD and other ethical guidance, chapters explore topics such as ensuring quality in data, the importance of defining terms, ethical inclusion, use and misuse of the term vulnerability, the intersection of race and ethnicity, the role of ethics committees and other approval processes and maximising research impact.

?This book looks at how the Yiddish press sought to create Jewish-American identities for immigrant women. Shelby Shapiro focuses on two women's magazines and the women's pages in three daily newspapers, from 1913, when the first Yiddish women's magazine appeared, until 1925, when the Immigration Act of 1924 took effect. Shapiro demonstrates how newspaper editors and publishers sought to shape identity in line with their own religious or political tendencies in this new environment, where immigrants faced a broad horizon of possibilities for shaping or reshaping their identities in the face of new possibilities and constraints. External constraints included the economic situation of the immigrants, varying degrees of antisemitism within American society, while internal constraints included the variable power of traditions and beliefs brought with them from the Old World. Words to the Wives studies how publications sought to shape the direction of Eastern European Jewish immigrant women's acculturation.

Recipes are not just instructions. They also embody culture, class, belief, linguistic and literary form, and even include celebrity endorsement. Medieval and early modern recipes can be short and simple but sometimes are not - sometimes they work, and sometimes they do not. They can also be remarkably performative, imaginative, and playful. These essays explore recipes 1350-1600 from a range of perspectives and are unified by an interest in the complexity and richness of these texts.
This volume is the first of its kind. It presents new critical perspectives on medieval and early modern recipes, moving beyond concerns with utility to reframe recipes as part of a dynamic textual and intellectual culture. Contributors build on the sustained scholarly interest in recipes and bring fresh approaches to them. The thirteen essays explore topics including medical, culinary and domestic recipes and charms, as well as how they relate more generally to, for instance, book history, art, astrology and social practices.
Collectively, the essays reveal a distinctive book culture by exploring the material forms, literary and scribal practices of recipe books. This book is a significant contribution to these areas of study, increasingly central to scholarship in recent years.
Open Access versions of the following chapters will be available on publication on the Liverpool University Press website: Hannah Bower, The Brickmaker, the Tavern Keeper, and the Knight: The Role of Obscurity and Imagination in Medieval Medical Recipes and Katherine Storm Hindley, Bodies in the Recipe Collection: Interacting with Manuscript Charms in Late Medieval England

The publication of scholarly research is both a major driver of social progress and a significant industry in its own right. Scholarly research is the focus of attention for countless numbers of scholars globally and a key measure of scholarly excellence. Much has been written about the conduct of research that is designed to help scholars attain appropriate standards of rigor and relevance, and indeed craft their research outputs in ways appropriate for different venues, notably as journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, and books. However, although scholarly researchers fulfill roles other than as authors, for instance as journal reviewers and editors, there is a dearth of consolidated information about the nature of editorial work. Drawing on over two decades of experience in editing scholarly journals, the author offers a more systematic guide to scholarly journal editing.
The book begins with an introduction to the art of scholarly journal editing, the nature of that art (Chapter 1), and an examination of editorial promulgation of cultural values of scholarly journals with an emphasis on responsible research (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 examines the many issues associated with sourcing content, and opines on the novelty, breadth, and depth of research, including discussions of indigenous theorization, serendipity, iconoclastic research, and the value of special issues. Chapter 4 deals with the review process and offers advice for formulating effective reviewer guidelines that lead to constructive and developmental advice for authors. The next two chapters discuss the audience of the journal as well as publisher relations. Finally, the book is concluded with thoughts and recommendations about emerging challenges, such as the ethics of AI tools (like ChatGPT), predatory journals, and the open-access movement.
Offering a practical guide to editing scholarly journals, this book will be a key resource for scholars making the leap from researcher to editor, regardless of discipline.
