Are we living in a transnational world? The 900 percent rise in the use of "transnationalism" in publications since 1995 testifies to a defining phenomenon. International migration has increased two-thirds since 1980, and the global circulation of capital, media, and culture has intensified, provoking nationalist political backlash worldwide.
This collection of studies on exile, social science, indigeneity, gender activism, music and dance, gangs, sex work, narcofiction, and cinema examines how transnational forces influence racial difference, national identity, immigrant exclusion, state power, and cultural expression in the Americas. It explores how the physical and symbolic movement of humans and their artifacts shapes ideas and challenges accepted notions of national and conceptual boundaries among them. By addressing the impact of digital technologies on spatialization, by challenging emerging conventions on transnationalism, and by fostering interdisciplinary exchange, the book enriches our understanding of transnational lives and provides tools for exploring the transnational turn.

The history of warfare and armed organization during the colonial period and early nineteenth century in southern Texas and northeastern Mexico remains largely untold. Previous studies either cover the influence of warfare tangentially or ignore its importance. This study explores the topic through an examination of the inhabitants of four settlements: San Antonio and Laredo in Texas, as well as Lampazos and Bustamante in northeastern Mexico. All four of those settlements had Hispanic, Mesoamerican, and Native American elements that intermingled, adapted, and evolved over several centuries, creating a distinctive society in which armed service and military culture played a central role in social organization. This work uses multiple archival records, many previously unknown, from Mexico, Texas, and Spain. It places the local and micro historical aspects of borderlands military culture into the broader context of the Spanish Empire, Mexican nationalism, and the Atlantic World.
Armed Frontier focuses on how military organization and methods of warfare in these regions were influenced by the heritage of medieval Iberian martial traditions. It provides a different analysis of borderland societies through several historical periods including the Reconquista, the conquest of Mexico, the colonial period, the wars of independence, the Mexican Republic, and the age of federalism and centralism, all against the backdrop of a burgeoning geopolitical rivalry with the United States. The themes covered in the book illustrate the complexities of borderlands societies through a linear analysis of local sources, inserted in a broad geopolitical context and accessible to a wide audience.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the role of space exploration and technology in Mexico. The Mexican space sector is currently experiencing rapid growth, with new participants entering the field and space applications increasingly supporting the country's social, economic, and political development. There is a growing recognition of space as a vital component of Mexico's development agenda. Despite significant progress in recent years that has improved the living conditions of many Mexicans and helped lift people out of poverty, much work remains to be done to meet the basic needs of all citizens and ensure they receive the respect they deserve. Space technology is already being utilized in various sectors to help achieve Mexico's future objectives, and there are still ample opportunities to expand the use of space systems and data. This book will interest researchers, professionals, and students in fields such as space studies, international relations, governance, and social and rural development.

In the viceroyalty of New Spain descriptive terms such as 'harms and excesses' (dan os y excesos) not only referred to crimes like murder and robbery (muertes y robos) but also became generalized to refer to Native religious, social, or cultural practices that fell outside the boundaries of Catholic orthodoxy. A reading of royal decrees and ecclesiastical missives, commoner testimony from criminal cases, and the trials of the Mexican Inquisition reveals a calculated rhetorical strategy that gathered non-European social-cultural experiences into a negative category. Consequently, 'excess' provides an analytical framework for understanding how colonial officials interacted with Indigenous peoples and those of African descent as they attempted to impose social order.
While primary sources in non-European languages such as Nahuatl reveal a similar preoccupation with excess, Hagler reveals in this insightful book how incongruities between Nahua and Spanish interpretations of the term extended through the colonial era and generated increasing conflict.

Underneath picturesque views of palm trees, fruity cocktails in hotel lounges, and day trips to preserved colonial zones lies a history of tourism design that intersects with larger projects of development and national and cultural identity formation. Locating modernity and coloniality as the key framework within which tourism development takes place, Development Design focuses on hotel design and its relation to larger urban and rural landscapes to uncover the way these seemingly carefree spaces are bound to local politics and international relations. Focusing on three sites in the Hispanic Caribbean?San Juan, Ciudad Trujillo, and Havana?Morawski traces different attitudes and approaches to tourism and its material design through five hotels that serve as case studies. Through examination of wicker chairs and lobby interiors, architecture and landscaping, public works and urban planning, Development Design illustrates the integral role hotel design played in negotiated and contested histories of development in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba.

This book reveals the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic interventions on vernacular landscapes as a cultural heritage through an analysis of regional and urban development projects and local-level practices. Vernacular landscapes encompass customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions, and values that are innate to a particular place and time, with climate knowledge embedded alongside other environmental, cultural, and societal determinants. The cultural heritage of these places is threatened by climate and disaster risks, such as loss of land, food sources, water resources, intangible values, and displacement.
This book first critically unfolds the legacy of vernacular heritage responses to local conditions, focusing on climate, drawing on the examples of vernacular heritage sites worldwide, including India, Japan, and Mali. It then critically analyses the effects of climate and disaster risks on vernacular heritage, accelerated by spatial and local decisions and practices in a detailed study in Findikli, a district of Rize Province on the Black Sea coast in Turkey. It evaluates the insights, perceptions, and experiences of local people through interviews aiming to shed light on climate-resilient vernacular heritage sites.
By understanding the present challenges resulting from past decisions and actions at various scales, this book offers an interdisciplinary approach to the emerging field of climate change adaptation of cultural heritage studies. Bridging multiple fields, it will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students interested in cultural heritage, climate change studies, environmental studies, architectural and landscape conservation, and planning.

This pioneering book explores new configurations of Dia de Muertos during COVID-19 within considerations of how the pandemic has shaped ideas about death and dying differently. It investigates how commemorative and mourning practices changed in Mexico during the turbulent years of 2020-21 and, through its innovative case studies of Mexican communities in Ireland and the UK, asks how the festival contributed in all three regions to global conversations about grief, mental health, and gender-based violence. We offer original analysis of Dia de Muertos expressions including marches, dance performances, masks, film, and calavera poetry, alongside online and digital community and home-based creative gestures. Our analysis reveals how Mexicans and Mexicans abroad have engaged with the rich compendium of Dia de Muertos symbolic and narrative systems in order to discuss how COVID-19 has re-framed ideas of loss and renewal more widely.

Extended Mobility for the City as a Common offers a novel framework for understanding how urban inhabitants access and experience cities. It invites readers to critically examine the ways in which stigmatization and socioeconomic barriers combine to restrict access to urban opportunities for marginalized communities. Arguing that the right to the city is inseparable from the right to mobility, this book calls for a radical shift toward a welcoming and solidary city, both in transportation systems and in the inhabitants' destinations.
This book is structured into three parts. Part I introduces the concept of "Extended Mobility," a multidimensional framework encompassing motility, accessibility, and porosity that provides a new lens to interrogate the multifaceted nature of mobility as a social phenomenon. Part II applies this framework through a grounded ethnographic comparison of Favela da Mare in Rio de Janeiro and the San Siro housing project in Milan. These rich and detailed studies develop robust methodological tools and theoretical insights that uncover the complex mobility experiences of peripheral urban inhabitants. In the final section, leading experts in transportation and urban planning engage Extended Mobility across different global settings to critique existing policies and explore pathways toward mobility justice and a city of rights for all.
By integrating structural and experiential perspectives on urban mobility, this book is an essential resource for social science researchers and urban and transportation planning scholars as well as policymakers, practitioners, and activists seeking to foster more inclusive cities and empower communities to access the full possibilities of a common urban life.

This book provides a critical introduction to the key writings of Paul Lazarsfeld (1901-1976), edited by two prominent sociologists. It includes Lazarsfeld's early work on youth and occupation, which shows the intellectual influences of Austro-Marxism, academic psychology, and the philosophy of the Vienna Circle, and how they were applied to specific social issues. They also show how Lazarsfeld's concerns about the intellectual and methodological aspects of sociology, which foreshadowed some of the major issues in current sociological methods, played an important role in shaping the direction of the discipline in the United States. The essays demonstrate how Lazarsfeld laid many of the foundations for reliable social survey techniques and qualitative methods for understanding key aspects of contemporary society. Some examples of these aspects are voting studies, opinion polling, occupational research, and mass media research. Lazarsfeld's early work in "administrative research" laid the groundwork for a lot of market and business research. The essays in this book are accompanied by a detailed and illuminating biographical introduction by the editors. This collection is an important addition to the history of 20th-century sociology. It is also the only English-language source of Paul Lazarsfeld's early writings.

This volume proposes an interdependent relationship between progress and obstacles in architecture and the built environment. It challenges the positive notion of progress, and the conception of progress and obstacle as a dichotomy.
For shapers of the world, finding 'the solution' is often a mark of progress that becomes embedded in culture, society, and history. Progress is ever-present. Through the exploration of diverse positions in history, theory, and practice, this book explores the potential utility of the progressively problematic rather than the natural tendency towards the progressively solved. Chapters draw on historic spaces, technological advancement, incorporation of the natural world, alterative production, and the consideration of human experience both sensory and psychological. Challenging the positive connotation of 'progress', the writings also explore reversing the notion of obstacle from disruptive anti-tool to obstacle of utilitarian method, a useful tool, pressing approach, and overarching value system.
This will be interesting reading for upper-level students and scholars of Architecture, Urban Design, Philosophy, and Sociology.

The city has historically been conceived as a project, with a sense of duty to be: it is the prefiguration of a reality that emerges from the negation of the pre-existing city. The city anticipates a desired future from an ideal perspective that tends to overcome the existing structural or particular challenges of the present. It can be argued that this proposition represents the historical trajectory of urban thought on a planetary scale. Therefore, the prospective dimension of the city constituted a central dynamic in urban theory throughout history, leading to the emergence of planning as a key approach.
The history of the city as a project is the core of the first volume in this two-part contribution. It presents an overview of diverse city projects that have been pursued throughout history, providing a framework for exploring new perspectives of urban development. The cities profiled and analyzed here reflect a living catalog of initiatives that can inform promising directions. More than a compilation, this volume compares and critically assesses these historical projects to provide a grounding for the contemporary advances presented in the second volume.

This groundbreaking book enriches and expands psychoanalytic theory and method as it applies to the climate.
It embeds psychoanalysis within environmental and cultural awareness; restores the importance Freud placed on external reality and its mental representations; introduces an integrative concept of climate; and, with its attention to clinical detail, offers stepping stones for practitioners seeking to understand clinical material in which phantasies involving nature, culture, and family are intertwined. Presented in four parts - Clinical, Theory, Nature, and Research - its authors are psychoanalysts from across the world.
With Climate in Mind is essential reading for practising and training psychoanalysts, for those in the psychotherapy profession, and for other professionals engaged with what climate breakdown in a culture of carelessness means today.

It explains why vulnerable populations are more at risk due to factors such as lack of infrastructure, poverty, and limited access to resources. This book offers insights on conceptual frameworks to help vulnerable communities adapt and become more resilient to climate impacts. Real-life examples with challenges and actionable suggestions aim to inform policymakers and the public about the urgent need for targeted initiatives.
Features:
- Provides a comprehensive examination of how marginalized groups, from indigenous populations in the Niyamgiri Hills to urban slum dwellers in Asia, are disproportionately affected by climate change and what can be done to mitigate these impacts.
- Includes practical examples from different countries to help understand the intersection between climate change and social inequality.
- Utilizes advanced technologies and provides cutting-edge tools such as geospatial maps and diagrams for modelling climate threats and predicting climate-related challenges.
- Provides a roadmap for more resilient and inclusive future strategies.
- Highlights interdisciplinary discussions and contributions by various stakeholders to reach different audiences and offer regional problem-solving opportunities.
This book serves as a valuable resource for a wide audience, including climate scientists, geographers, ecologists, geologists, urban planners, environmentalists, research scholars, and policymakers engaged in the fields of environmental management, climate justice, and sustainable development. By featuring the voices and experiences of disadvantaged communities, this book contributes meaningfully to the ongoing debates of climate justice, sustainable development, and equitable adaptation pathways.

The Enigma of Climate Inaction explores humanity's perplexing passivity in the face of the looming climate crisis-despite our having known about it for decades, the fact that we brought it into existence, and the existential threat it poses to our species.
Drawing on cutting-edge insights from cognitive science, anthropology, history, economy, finance, and philosophy, Samama argues that our success in accessing resources has bred an overconfidence in the systems that enable it. By uncovering the roots of our inaction, he moves beyond merely identifying the problem and offers a framework for action. He invites readers to experience a jolt in perspective-one that prompts a re-evaluation of our relationship with nature and our sense of responsibility.
This powerful and innovative examination of the cognitive and societal blind spots that obstruct urgent climate action and solutions provided will be especially valuable for professionals in environmental policy, the social sciences and humanities, and finance.

Three Empires and Persian Historiography: The Thought of Mu?li? al-din Lari uncovers the underexplored historical vision of a sixteenth-century scholar whose work spanned the Safavid, Timurid, and Ottoman worlds.
Centering on Lari's universal chronicle [Mir'atu'l-Advar wa Mir?atu'l-A?bar], The Mirror of Epochs and the Staircase of Historical Reports, this book explores how a figure in philosophy, theology, and the sciences used history to navigate shifting imperial landscapes. Written in Persian and completed upon Sultan Selim II's accession to the throne, Lari's work offers a nuanced and often critical perspective on the Safavid dynasty, reverent accounts of the Timurid legacy, and a carefully constructed narrative of Ottoman rule. Through detailed textual analysis, the book demonstrates how Lari positioned himself as both a cultural mediator and a political commentator, using historiography to reflect broader debates about legitimacy, identity, and intellectual authority in the early modern Islamic world.
A vital resource for scholars of Islamic historiography, Persianate studies, and Ottoman intellectual history, this book illuminates the enduring power of historical writing as a tool for negotiation, memory, and empire-making.

This book investigates the ways in which peripheral news actors in digital media are transforming journalism in Zimbabwe.
Journalism's boundaries have become blurred, porous and fuzzy as non-traditional news actors-such as bloggers, social media influencers, citizen journalists, start-ups, satirists, comedians and fact-checkers-gain increasing influence in digital spaces. As legacy news media attempt to ring-fence the field, journalism becomes both 'boundaried' and 'boundless'. This book examines how peripheral journalistic practices are impacting Zimbabwe-a semi-authoritarian regime facing significant economic pressures. Taking into account Zimbabwe's specific sociocultural, political and economic context, this book explores how political issues are mediated by periphery actors, how they deal with challenges to their legitimacy and professionalism, how sustainable their positions are and finally what the implications of shifting journalistic boundaries are for education and training institutions.
As the impact of digital technologies continues to rise, this timely book will be an important read for researchers working on journalism, media and communication, and African studies.

Itinerant Potters in the Andes: The Swallow Model of Ceramic Production presents a new interpretative approach to pottery production and distribution. Based on extensive fieldwork data from the northern Peruvian Andes, it explores the swallow potters, itinerant artisans who seasonally leave their hometowns to produce ceramic pots in destination towns, both near and far.
These itinerant artisans have been recorded ethnographically in the Peruvian territory since the late nineteenth century. However, archaeologists and art historians tend to ignore them in their explanations of Andean material culture, insisting on a static image of the past. Moreover, nearly all of the general interpretative concepts and models of the precolonial Andean world are based on decorated ceramics and on a model of a potter who stays put and works in their hometown. This book argues that comprehensive explanations of Andean history must incorporate undecorated pottery and must consider various types of potters. This novel perspective uses the swallows to propose a more dynamic reading of Andean ceramic evidence, in which these potters are understood as part of broader inter-communal Andean migration patterns that have persisted since precolonial times.
This book will be of great interest to researchers in Andean Archaeology and Ethnography as well as pottery specialists from around the world.

With this book, Bernd Reiter reflects on over three decades of research on race, exclusion, inequality, white supremacy, and the defense of privilege in Brazil to explore how social hierarchies, honor, and dignity perpetuate systemic disparities in Latin America. Status, as a structuring force of societies, Reiter argues, offers a different lens through which to analyze Latin American societies.
Combining the works of Toennies, Weber, and Bourdieu with those of Guerreiro Ramos, Raymundo Faoro, Florestan Fernandes, and Jacob Gorender, Reiter contends that Latin American societies are best understood as status societies where the organizing principle is not class, gender, or race alone, but honor - a set of cultural norms, behaviors, and practices that confer social recognition and prestige. Status is not purely hereditary, nor is it solely a function of economic class. Instead, it is a multifaceted construct that incorporates elements of race, class, gender, cultural capital, behavior, and descent.
A passionate and illuminating alternative to the study of inequality in Latin America, this book adds important nuance to discussions of how to devise more equitable and inclusive strategies for the future.

The Non-Post-Socialist City examines contemporary urban policies through case studies of six cities in four states across Central and Eastern Europe and Former Soviet Union (CEE/FSU) region.
This book adopts a rarely used approach in the study of so-called post-socialist cities-combining several years of in-depth empirical research with a broad comparative frame. Building on this foundation, it analyzes urban policymaking processes in Leipzig (Germany), Warsaw and Krakow (Poland), Tallinn (Estonia), and Kyiv and Lviv (Ukraine). The monograph interprets these dynamics through the author's concept of diluted post-socialism, which highlights not only trajectories rooted in the Soviet-dominated era but also a range of pre- or nonsocialist legacies that interact with-and often complicate-the few decades of now-defunct state-socialist rule. Particular attention is given to four policy fields: mobility, green infrastructure, housing, and spatial planning. While these domains pose broadly similar dimensions across the six cities, their organization reveals a highly diverse urban landscape that is too often flattened under the "post-socialist" label.
The book is intended for scholars, analysts, students, and anyone interested in urbanization processes in the former Eastern bloc, as well as in the impact of the global populist turn on urban policymaking within this region and in a broader urban context.

Establishing a theoretical framework for Arts-based Environmental Education (AEE) and narrative pedagogy, this seminal volume lays the groundwork for understanding the potential of art, education, and aesthetic expressions to address environmental issues head-on.
Theoretical chapters inform a discussion of empirical studies carried out in Sweden, Finland, and Slovenia, applying concepts such as relational pedagogy and phenomenology to real-world settings. Chapters further explore various art forms such as land art and drama in the context of the storyline approach, creating narratives on resilience and sustainability, addressing climate anxiety, and fostering critical and imaginative thinking among students. Theoretical and empirical insights combined with indigenous perspectives lead to practical strategies for implementing AEE in various educational contexts, providing concrete examples of how AEE can be integrated into classroom settings, outdoor education, and community programmes. Emphasis is also given to the importance of connecting these practices to broader global initiatives such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the cultivation of a sustainable, liveable future. At the heart of the book is a Manifesto for Regenerative Education - a poetic and powerful framework for rethinking learning in the Anthropocene.
Presenting a pioneering approach that positions education and artistic expression as the starting point for fostering ecological awareness and engagement, this book will interest practitioners, researchers and educators in arts education, environmental and sustainability education, and innovative pedagogies more broadly.
