This edited volume operationalizes the figure of the ghost and subsequent hauntings through Derrida’s framing of 'hauntology'?in an effort to attend to the liminal spaces that exist between presence and absence throughout social studies contexts (and beyond). Traditionally, social studies education and its tenets of economics, civics, geography, government, and history have been concerned with how bodies become (re)produced, (re)located, destroyed, and remembered across vectors of time. However, as this work argues, the maintenance of strict demarcations of time becomes problematic by closing opportunities for students to engage with the complex ways that (material) bodies shift within temporal encounters. As such, this book is primarily concerned with pursuing?and positioning?such haunted encounters as generative lines of inquiry that grant us (e.g., educators, students, researchers) the ability to think differently about history, the present, and the future. In a distinct move toward a 'pastpresentfuture', this volume challenges the boundaries of social studies teaching, learning, and research by interrupting majoritarian temporal/material positionings that stymie how social and ecological justice is narrativized, understood, and perhaps most significantly, attained in the future.

Sustainability Principles and Practice gives an accessible and comprehensive overview of the interdisciplinary field of sustainability. It focuses on providing solutions and equipping students with both conceptual understanding and technical skills. Each chapter explores one aspect of the field, first introducing concepts and presenting issues, then supplying tools for working toward positive outcomes. Elements of sustainability are examined piece by piece, along with techniques for management and measurement, and coverage ranges over ecosystems, social equity, environmental justice, food, energy, product life cycles, cities, and more. Chapters also include further reading and discussion questions.
The fourth edition includes up-to-date information about the new geological epoch known as the Anthropocene, the latest climate research from the IPCC, an introduction to issues of human health, expanded discussion about the drivers and impacts of income inequality, and a new chapter on environmental ethics. New case studies illustrate solutions from Europe, the Americas, Asia, and the Global South.
This book is supported by online resources for instructors and students including links, annotated bibliography, glossary, white papers, additional case studies, interactive quizzes, and key explainer videos, together with projects, research problems, and group activities, all of which focus on real-world problem-solving of sustainability issues.
This textbook is designed to be used by undergraduate college and university students in sustainability degree programs and other programs in which sustainability is taught.

This open access book mainly focuses on Northeast China, which historically included Heilongjiang Province, Jilin Province, Liaoning Province, and the eastern part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This area borders Mongolia to the west, the ocean to the south, the Korean Peninsula to the east by the Yalu River and the Tumen River, and Russia to the north by the Heilongjiang River and Ussuri River. In Northeast China, the period from the Xia to the Warring States was an important cultural stage between the Neolithic Age and the (Qin) Han and Wei dynasties. Since 1921, a wealth of archaeological data of this period has been gained through investigations and excavations by scholars from China and abroad. This treasure trove of data covers a considerable timespan and broad geographic area. Accordingly, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis to distill valuable archaeological insights from materials unearthed throughout the Northeast.
This book breaks down the chronological coordinates of archaeological cultures during the Xia and Warring States period into seven natural geographic regions, namely the Nenjiang River basin in the Northeast; the mountainous area of Liaoxi; the Liaoxi Plain; southern Liaodong; northern Liaodong; the Second Songhua River basin; and the Tumen River basin. Further, it pursues a multi-dimensional approach: grouping individual sites and cemeteries, categorizing multiple sites and cemetery groups, and identifying the period division and chronological sequence of the archaeological cultures. Based on a comparison and integrated studies of these seven coordinates, we identify four archaeological periods: the Xia-Shang period, the late Shang period, the Western Zhou to Spring and Autumn period, and the Warring States period.

This book explores how minoritized languages and identities are impacted by "deglobalization" - marked by increased state control, declining global market power, and growing repression of civil liberties. As nations tighten borders and prioritize unity, many minoritized groups are losing their rights to speak their languages and express their cultural identities. Focusing on Chinese diasporan youth in Indonesia, this book examines how individuals navigate their identities in an environment where speaking Chinese is often seen as a threat. Through analysis of everyday interactions and interviews with young Chinese Indonesians, this book disrupts state-driven narratives that position Chinese language and culture as incompatible with Indonesianness. Instead, it paints a complex picture of contemporary Chineseness and Indonesianness, with some young diasporans aligning with a nationalizing discourse that prioritizes standard Indonesian, others striving to sustain their Chineseness amid these pressures, and many other still navigating pathways in between. By using the Indonesian context to highlight the necessity of a deglobalization paradigm within sociolinguistics, this book offers fresh insights into language and identity in our rapidly changing societies. It is an important read for scholars in linguistics, anthropology, and Asian studies, as well as policymakers, educators, and anyone interested in the intersections of language, identity, and power. More than just an academic study, it serves as a resource for Chinese Indonesians and other diasporan communities seeking to discuss, understand, and reclaim their histories, cultures, and languages in an era of repression.

This book adopts an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on contributions from experts in various fields such as geography, environmental and developmental studies, to provide a comprehensive analysis of Brunei's role within Southeast Asia's future trajectory. Brunei has often been overlooked, or given only cursory coverage in regional analyses, and so this book affords significant attention to the Bruneian perspective on regional development. By integrating Brunei's unique historical, geographical and socio-economic context into the broader discussion, the book offers insights into how Brunei's aspirations and challenges contribute to shaping the region's future. By emphasizing local-regional transformation and resilience, the book provides practical insights into how Brunei and other Southeast Asian nations can navigate uncertainties-adapting to global challenges such as climate change, economic shifts, and geopolitical dynamics-and seize opportunities in the coming decades. It is relevant to social scientists across disciplines focused on Southeast Asia, and in the Muslim world's role in development.

This book confronts, and redresses, the remarkable lack of understanding and knowledge about Myanmar, particularly in the West, regarding the backdrop to the Rohingya crisis and genocide. It provides an ethnohistorical overview, discussing the cross-border dynamics, the genocide, and UN/international responses. It focuses on the refugee camps, regional security, and Rohingya repatriation issues. The book presents a broad and well-rounded view of the ongoing crisis, highlighting perspectives both from "within" and "outside" it. This unique book collates chapters by a global, diverse team of interdisciplinary scholars and experts, bringing together an integrated and holistic analysis toward a better understanding of the roots of the ongoing crisis, and the survival and protection of the Rohingya refugees. It will be useful to students, scholars, and policymakers seeking to understand the complexity of the crisis, working in areas such as history, conflict/refugee studies, international affairs and regional studies, political science, sociology, and anthropology.

This book represents a pioneering contribution to the study of municipal solid waste and the policies that can mitigate its negative impact on both the environment and the economy. It is structured around a comprehensive exploration of municipal waste with focus on food waste and plastic waste in China and the United States, the two largest economies and the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. By drawing a comparative analysis and case studies from businesses and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), this book sheds light on an often overlooked but critically important area of environmental policy. The authors offer a set of concrete policy recommendations that span regulatory frameworks, measurement systems, technological innovations, financing strategies, and market-based approaches. A hybrid governance model that combines government regulation with market incentives is advocated, creating a dynamic system in which waste is not only managed but also converted into renewable energy, benefiting both the economy and the environment. The book is well-structured and accessible to all audiences interested in environmental policy and waste management. It offers valuable insights for policymakers in governmental or professional institutions, helping them devise more effective solutions for municipal waste management.

This book is a festschrift in tribute to Ben Wisner's contributions to disaster studies and adjacent fields of scholarship such as political ecology, development and sustainability.
This festschrift for Ben, and so The Benschrift, revitalises, promotes and critiques a selection of six foundational articles that span Ben's 50-year career. Each article is reproduced integrally and followed by a commentary by an expert in the field and a response from Ben. As a result, this book not only introduces a lifetime's work to the latest generation of researchers; it also contributes a meaningful dialogue across decades of scholarship, expressing contemporary reflections alongside the understanding of how to engage with and improve past research. Two fundamental truths stand out: the value of local knowledge and the necessity of seeking root causes and radical solutions.
This book is an essential read for students, researchers, policy makers and practitioners interested in the development and evolution of disaster scholarship, political ecology, development and sustainability studies.

In a time of global backlash against women's rights and gender issues, this book echoes the importance of protecting the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women by conceptualising and analysing relevant sexual and reproductive health rights issues (SRHR) in Africa and the Caribbean. It examines the linkages that exist around SRHR issues between the two regions and how this understanding can help to support the protection of sexual and reproductive health and rights both in Africa and the Caribbean. It focuses on providing historical, conceptual and contxtual understandings of SRHR issues in the African continent and the Caribbean region. The main topics engage theoretical and contemporary issues, e.g., limitations to the single use of courts as avenues for reducing obstetric violence, abortion rights, maternal mortality, gender-based violence, and adolescent sexuality. The book presents diverse perspectives in the examination of SRHR issues by offering legal, socio-political, and medical frameworks for analysing and understanding sexual and reproductive health and rights. It further contributes to the discourse and strategies to protect the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and men to improve both women’s and men’s quality of life/well-being and to also achieve gender equality.

This volume examines environmental disasters worldwide, often stemming from extractive industries like fossil fuels. Questioning human desires for comfort, convenience, and national defense, it confronts the relentless pursuit of profit in a capitalist system. From the development of nuclear weapons to the damaging effects of climate change, the book questions humanity's capacity to address these challenges. As temperatures soar, can we endure inconvenience and unite globally to tame climate change?
From the lethal coal mines of India to the haunting aftermath of nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands, each chapter presents different cases of struggles against relentless exploitation. Among other topics, the book discusses China's environmental crisis, Nigeria's oil-infested lands, and Australia's uranium conflicts. It sheds light on the Amazon's indigenous defenders confronting mining and disease, while Vietnam and Cambodia grapple with the enduring legacy of Agent Orange. Finally, it looks into the Philippines' battle against mining giants and mirrors Russia's oil-ravaged reindeer herders.
Presenting the fight for survival against the onslaught of profit-driven extraction, the volume pictures a world where tradition clashes with modernity, and where the price of progress is often paid in blood and displacement. Hence, this book underscores the urgent need for cooperation in safeguarding our planet's future.

This book analyses historic and contemporary border regime developments in East Africa, and draws a complex picture of borders control in Africa beyond stereotypical “Western” imaginations. Based on ethnographic research, it describes the everyday realities of Kenyan border officers dealing with colonial border legacies on the ground, and analyses actual enforcement practices. Moreover, the book examines the implementation process of One Stop Border Post (OSBP), which is currently taking place all over the African continent. OSBPs stand in between regional, pan-African as well as neo-colonial, capitalist interests, and will shape cross-border trade, migration, security and transnational relations in the future. The book offers a critical analysis of this implementation process with reference to local voices from different borderlands of Kenya with Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Sudan and Uganda. The case studies thereby exemplify the ambivalent reality of borders worldwide, which simultaneously open and close at the same time, whereby reproducing inequalities.

This book provides an in-depth analysis of how Muslim Community Organisations (MCOs) in Australia perceived and responded to Islamophobia between 2014 and 2018?a period marked by the rise of ISIS, a surge in anti-Muslim political rhetoric, and culminating in the Christchurch terrorist attack on praying Muslims in New Zealand. Grounded in an agency-structure framework, it explores how MCOs navigated systemic power to resist Islamophobia through civic, discursive, and political strategies. Arguing that their agency is both pragmatic and transformative, the book reveals how these organisations operated within and against the constraints of Australian politics.
Building on this analysis, the final chapter reflects on the author's engagement with Muslim organisers to examine how the Australian state's response to the 2023 War on Gaza?marked by its complicity?shook the Muslim community, catalysing new forms of activism that depart from the pre-Christchurch context and may redefine the contours of anti-Islamophobia, Muslim-led advocacy.
This study is essential reading for scholars of Islamophobia, social movements, and Australian politics, offering valuable insights into the intersections of power, resistance, and identity.

This book explores how Kazakhstan has navigated its identity and geopolitical relationships since the January 2022 protests and the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. What began as a study of Soviet legacy in Kazakhstan shifted focus when major events in 2022 altered the country's internal politics and regional standing.
We trace Kazakhstan's complex history with Russia from the incorporation of Kazakh nomadic territories into the Russian Empire through the Soviet era to today's complex relationship. The Soviet policies of collectivization and sedentarization dramatically transformed traditional Kazakh society, with devastating consequences like the Asharshylyk famine that continue to shape national memory and identity.
The book examines Kazakhstan's development under Presidents Nazarbayev and Tokayev, looking at how their "social contract" prioritized economic growth and stability over political freedoms. We provide a detailed look at the January 2022 protests, their aftermath, and Tokayev's subsequent reform agenda aimed at political modernization.
In the shadow of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, we show how Kazakhstan walks a diplomatic tightrope?maintaining necessary ties with Russia while avoiding Western sanctions and developing new partnerships, especially with Turkic states. Using postcolonial theory, we analyze how historical power dynamics continue to influence Kazakhstan's search for identity and place in the world.
Through five chapters, we offer readers a window into Kazakhstan's evolving sense of self, its changing relationships with global powers, and the potential for Pan-Turkism to provide a complementary alliance to Russian-dominated regional frameworks.

This book analyses the liberation struggles that took place in the Portuguese colonies of Angola, Mozambique, Guinea, Cabo Verde, and Sao Tome e Principe during the second half of the twentieth century, highlighting how they unravelled and challenged colonialism in the international sphere. Activists established headquarters and training camps in various exile settings that were instrumental in their struggle for independence. Exile settings were places where the liberation movements worked with host countries, accessed representatives of foreign countries, made connections with nonstate actors and networks of support, and received political and military training. The complex networks of support formed by protestors around the globe operated on a transnational scale, using urban centres as sites of activism and arenas to promote a multiplicity of connections. Bringing together contributions from a range of skilled authors, the book explores selected hubs around the globe including those based in Kinshasa, Dar es Salaam, Cairo, Moscow, Beijing, New York, London, Paris, and Sao Paulo. Taking a comparative approach, this collection sheds light on the infrastructures of solidarity that were established by activists around the world, and highlights the transnational circulation of ideas around anticolonialism.

This book examines how members of the South Asian diaspora-one of the world's largest diasporic communities-forge complex, hybrid identities at the intersection of homeland traditions and host society influences. Against the backdrop of significant deterritorialization and cultural diversity, it explores the nuanced ways multiple generations navigate between preserving heritage and adapting to new environments.
Through rich, multidisciplinary perspectives, the volume investigates:
- The blending of traditional practices with new cultural elements
- The delicate balance between adaptation and heritage preservation
- The emergence of unique cultural spaces shaped by transnational connections
Organized into two comprehensive sections-identity formation and transnational practices-this collection offers valuable insights into the lived experiences of South Asian communities worldwide and is essential reading for scholars and students in diaspora studies, migration research, transnationalism, and South Asian cultural studies.
The chapters in this book were originally published in South Asian Diaspora.

Focusing on the city of Athens, this book examines architecture as something that produces culture and ideology - rather than the opposite. Therefore, this book aims to complement architectural and urban theories that are based only on historical overviews or typological assumptions; to do so, it boldly opens architectural discourse to philosophy, affect theory, and social and cognitive sciences.
By examining Athens after its denomination as Greek capital in 1834, the moments, actors, and transformations that assist the individuation of the Athenian urban ecologies are problematised. Opting for theoretical speculations, the readers will witness architecture as a collective equipment that produces modes of life that can either enhance or diminish our collective potentials. As such, the ambition of this book is to provide the theoretical and methodological groundings for thorough extrapolations on how new collectivities can be produced.
Readers of this book will be exposed to a transdisciplinary approach that identifies and addresses shared problems and concerns regarding the production of contemporary urban environments. This book will also explore theoretical innovations that can inform and trigger new ways of speculative thinking and offers a non-reductionist account of the development of Athens from the perspective of multiple architectural technicities. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of architecture, architectural theory, architectural history, and philosophy.

Ethnic Minorities in Israel and Turkey: Inside Outsiders offers a compelling comparative analysis of state- minority relations, revealing how national identity is constructed and contested through the lens of two of the region's most enduring ethnic conflicts.
Through extensive fieldwork and elite interviews, this book investigates how Israeli and Turkish political elites have responded to the political mobilization of their largest minorities - Palestinians and Kurds. It traces the historical trajectories of nation-building, examines the securitization of minority rights, and explores the ways in which demands for autonomy, recognition, and equal participation are interpreted as existential threats to national unity. Drawing on the ethnic boundary-making framework, the chapters analyse how divergent strategies - exclusion in Israel and forced assimilation in Turkey - have shaped patterns of inclusion and exclusion, with particular attention to the symbolic role of trans-border kinship, collective rights, and political representation. By highlighting the narratives of political elites, this book illuminates how ethnic minorities come to be treated as "inside outsiders," navigating the tensions between national loyalty and ethnocultural affiliation.
Essential reading for scholars of comparative politics, nationalism, Middle East studies, and ethnic relations, this book deepens our understanding of how contested identities are negotiated in the modern nation-state.

What does 'quality education' truly mean, and how can we ensure it is accessible to all children, regardless of their background? This book delves into these pressing questions, offering a comprehensive exploration of the challenges and opportunities within India's education system.
Why do millions of children in India attend school yet still struggle to acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills? This book examines the varied reasons behind poor learning outcomes, illustrating why high enrolment rates have not translated into meaningful educational progress. It underscores the urgent need to shift the focus from merely getting children into schools to ensuring they learn and thrive. Through real-world case studies, insightful policy analysis, and a focus on innovative state and national initiatives, the book unpacks what works in education - and what does not. From the role of teachers and school leadership to the importance of inclusive policies and community engagement, it offers a holistic view of the factors influencing student achievement.
As a part of the Innovations, Practice and the Future of Public Policy in India series, this open access volume will interest policy professionals, academics, and researchers in education, pedagogy, curriculum design, education economics, and development studies.

This pioneering book explores new configurations of Dia de Muertos during COVID-19 within considerations of how the pandemic has shaped ideas about death and dying differently. It investigates how commemorative and mourning practices changed in Mexico during the turbulent years of 2020-21 and, through its innovative case studies of Mexican communities in Ireland and the UK, asks how the festival contributed in all three regions to global conversations about grief, mental health, and gender-based violence. We offer original analysis of Dia de Muertos expressions including marches, dance performances, masks, film, and calavera poetry, alongside online and digital community and home-based creative gestures. Our analysis reveals how Mexicans and Mexicans abroad have engaged with the rich compendium of Dia de Muertos symbolic and narrative systems in order to discuss how COVID-19 has re-framed ideas of loss and renewal more widely.
